Liveblog: Game 59 – Canadiens enter Olympic break on a winning streak

PriceCarolina

Third in a row

The Canadiens enter the Olympic break on a high after beating Carolina 4-1 to complete a three-W week.

David Desharnais led the way with two goals, Ryan White got his second in as many games and Brian Gionta's empty-netter completed the scoring.

Carey Price made 31 saves.

Max Pacioretty was injured during the first period when he crashed into the Carolina net. He did not return to the game, but said after the game he will go to Sochi.

Nailing it down

David Desharnais made it 3-1 with his 11th goal of the season, six minutes into the third period.

With Anton Khudobin on the bench, Brian Gionta circled the Carolina net and tucked in his 11th.

Late explosion

For most of the second period, the Canadiens looked like a dozy team.

A turnover by Carey Price turned into the first goal of the game, by Drayson Bowman.

Then with a shade over two minutes left, David Desharnais converted a pass from Rene Bourque to tie it up.

And Ryan White, who'd been sent out for a D-zone faceoff (which he lost) put the Canadiens ahead when an Andrei Markov shot bounced off his back and onto his stick.

Drayson Bowman scored the home team's only goal.

Carolina outshot the Canadiens 14-8.

Max Pacioretty's injury is "lower body".

Pacioretty hurt

Max Pacioretty collided with the Carolina goalpost and left the game with an injury that may be his arm, shoulder, leg or ribs.

Whatever, the Canadiens leading goal scorer looked to be in distress.

Canadiens outshot the home team 10-7, but Carolina came closest to scoring when Andrej Sekera hit the post behind Carey Price on a power play.

Last one for a while

The Canadiens pay a supper-hour visit to Carolina, and then they're idle until Feb. 26.

In a New Year's Eve game at PNC Arena, the Canadiens blew a 3-0 lead, watched the Hurricanes score four unanswered and then got a third-period equalizer before Alexander Semin beat Carey Price 3:27 into Overtime.

Carolina outshot the Canadiens 42-25 in that game.

With the Olympic break looming, the Canadiens sit third in the Atlantic Division.

Carolina is three points out of a wild-card playoff spot.

Puck drops at a weird 6:10ish.

Funny how *any* line with Gallagher on it is immediately the best line.

  5. slapshot777 says:

That Gally, DD and Bourque line has been effective tonight. Beauty by DD.

    I’m relieved it’s trending well again! :)

Ha.. so Max may need DD, but DD doesn’t need Max lol

    Smurf power !

  11. ffenliv says:

So is the key to getting anyone scoring just to give them Gallagher? Jeebus.

Beaulieu out of the corner like a magician and bang! 3-1 Habs

  13. Storman says:

    Great Play by Beaulieu

  14. piter says:

    that was sweet

  15. db says:

Eller does work hard, but he needs to work a bit smarter..

  16. Storman says:

Fu.k me Price is so good ,, getting Waite was a coo

  17. Peter Young says:

Man, Price’s technique is so much better this season.

  18. habsfan0 says:

Olympic Games notwithstanding,Max’s injury could not have come at a more opportune time as far as the Habs are concerned, with the team idle for the next 2 and a half weeks.
Hope it’s not too serious and that he’s able to go to Sochi, though.

  19. Mavid says:

    pinwheel sounds so disappointed

  20. Peter Young says:

Eller has been inconsistent, probably the result of line shifting, and he does tend to disappear in some games. All indications from what I’ve read are that it’s also partly a confidence problem that might need counselling.

  21. Reflektor says:

“vintage Price”? He’s having his best season.

  22. Storman says:

Ever since Bourque realized he was basically being shopped,, he has stepped up his game,, wonder what will happen if we still have him after the trade deadline..

  23. Storman says:

Getting Wiese for Diaz outright a fantastic trade..

    • Habcouver says:

      Great for Habs.
I do hope it works out for Diaz but I’m not sure he’s Tort’s kind of player.

      Waiting patiently for #25

    • Dave Jones says:

I hate to see Diaz be so undervalued. But, I agree that that trade made sense on many levels for the Habs, and it’s been great to see Weise elevate our fourth line–big and can really skate. His arrival combined with White’s return and Beaulieu’s ascendency, it’s come together nicely. Still need to sort out our 2nd and 3rd forward lines though.

      • rhino514 says:

Wiese is a better than average fourth liner, but habs would still have enough good fourth line forwards without him. Bournival or Moen with White and Prust (when Chucky comes back) would be good. Wiese is somewgat superfluous. Diaz on the other hand is a fulltime defenseman who can play close to twenty minutes.

  24. topher5468 says:

Suprised to read all the discontent with Eller here tonight. He’s a hard worker, tough to get off the puck and had great chemistry with Gallagher and Galchenyuk and had it taken away by no fault of his own. I like him and hope the team sticks with him.

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

    • DickandDanny says:

Get off the Gallagher and Galchenyuk tirade already. It’s really quite pathetic. Are these the only two guys Eller can play with in the League? A good creative centre makes his wingers look better and play well. Not the other way around.

“A cannonading blast from the wing, by Lafleur”

  25. rhino514 says:

I thought Gionta and/or Briere would continue showing signs of getting in rythm, but the team has some decisions to make if they want to score more 5 on 5. Eller definitely has lost his confidence. Gionta and Briere I can see finding something in the tank come playoff time, but they have to get Eller going, we need a three centre threat. He is a shadow of his former self.

  26. Sportfan says:

White is on fire and he may have a new friend named Wiese RESIGN HIM MB

On ya DD, Whitey and Bourque!

  28. 2shoes says:

Watching Canada’s woman’s hockey game, this team is bigger than Habs!

  29. CJ says:

Just ducked out on dinner to check in. Hoping PAC bounces back. Boy, didn’t look go though. Ryan White, I knew he was missed, but he is defying even my suggestion of how important he is to this team.

I fully expect Chucky to have this same impact. Big shout out to Bourque. Say what you wish about the coaching staff and their decisions, but the kid took a seat in the press box and has responded with passion.

Enjoy the third everyone! Go Habs!

  30. DickandDanny says:

If White’s name ever comes up in another trade rumour, I will be supremely pissed. Who did we miss the most recently. The answer lies within…..Whitey is the heart and soul of this team. Love this guy.

“A cannonading blast from the wing, by Lafleur”

  31. Reflektor says:

PJ crying for his Leafs. What a freakin loser.

  32. Peter Young says:

White’s another who has little fear, although he occasionally gets hurt from it.

  33. HabsFanInTampa says:

Ever since he’s been placed on the trading block, Rene Bourque has played exceptionally well.

  34. UKRAINIANhab says:

Desharnais has played exceptional. Good stuff DD

  35. Peter Young says:

Speaking of going to the net, Max, much criticized for not doing it, finally does it and comes a cropper. Going to the net has its dangers, and I guess some players are a bit leary of it. Not our man Gallagher, though. He seems to come through it largely unscathed, too.

  36. topher5468 says:

I guess it took a Pacioretty injury for the CH to get some air time on the CBC

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  37. Reflektor says:

Be fun to see the Canucks put the boot to the CBCs Leaf. Give em’ something to whine about during the break.

  38. DickandDanny says:

Plekanec deserves better than Gionta…this bromance has to end. Please move Gionta somewhere, anywhere, but not on our second line. Maybe move him altogether preferably back to NJ. He is utterly and completely useless. I thought the last game against Vancouver he played his worst game. I was wrong. He has more of those games left in him. I used to like him a lot as a tough little sniper around the net, but when a players time has come it’s time. We have Gallagher now, we no longer need Gionta. Move him.

“A cannonading blast from the wing, by Lafleur”

  39. athanor says:

That was an old ad on RDS. Teacher daydreaming about a horse imagines it is talking to her.

It’s just a kid with a question about the exercise — to write a letter to M. Bertrand about something I didn’t catch.

  40. Harditya says:

DD has 30 points in last 41 games.

  41. Et le but says:

If we win tonight and Tampa (currently trailing Detroit 1-0 after 1) loses, we go into the Olympic break 2nd in our division and 3rd in the conference.
    Not too shabby, eh?

  42. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

DD only scores when Max isn’t around. I’m done hating on the little fellow. Love White! The missing ingredient!

  43. Storman says:

CBC already has Pacioretty replaced from team USA,, does not sound good..did he leave in an ambulance, man where is a decent update..

  44. ffenliv says:

Anyone else find it ironic that Max was injured driving the net? We’ve all been begging him to go there for years. Maybe we should have listened to him.

  45. Storman says:

Do not remember Cole saying Gionta’s name once tonight, not necessarily a bad thing, he eats minutes even though he does not score like his New Jersey days

  46. CHicoHab says:

Would be nice getting 2 points tonite. Things were not looking so good 2 weeks ago.

  47. ffenliv says:

So the Sens got beat bad. The Leafs are losing. Good night so far!

  48. Storman says:

Price such a calming influence on this team,,

  49. kalevine says:

Habs go to the net = they win
so simple but they only do it on rare occasions

  50. Storman says:

Gone are the early days of ripping DD, and i was one of them,, but he is playing very very well,,

  51. jctremblay says:

CBC feed is messed up. But you can watch TO/VAn no problem. Habs game? it shows a schedule for next month..lol..I have an alternate feed of course but I am counting the minutes till the lose control over hockey..

  52. Rudy says:

The sound is so annoying for this game. I bet there are a lot of phone calls happening right now by team USA management

  54. Habcouver says:

Prediction: MaxPac will heal for Sochi.
    Waiting patiently for #25

  55. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it: DD is far more valuable to this team than Eller. Yet Eller gets all the praise (and excuses for lack of production), while DD gets only criticism.

    I remember Dec. 31, 1975

    • Dave Jones says:

      That contract looks better everyday.

    • DickandDanny says:

Right on. Thanks for echoing my thoughts. Eller reminds me of Newman, on Seinfeld. I have no idea why other than every time he shows up on the ice, I think of Newman. He’s like bad news. He should not be allowed to cross centre ice to protect himself from further criticism.
And on another note, Gionta is completely useless.

“A cannonading blast from the wing, by Lafleur”

  56. UKRAINIANhab says:

I told you habs would win! Not over yet, yes I know

Beauty by White. What a way to end the period.

  64. ffenliv says:

Two goals scored where there were, incidentally or not, guys going to the net. Weird.

WHAT?! This is unreal. Habs have been painfully bad. Up 2-1! Amazing.

it was looking like khudobin (sp?) would have a very easy shutout

  71. Et le but says:

Or….with the lead is good too!!!!

  72. Peter Young says:

On a pass from the equally useless Bourque.
