Liveblog: Game 59 – Canadiens enter Olympic break on a winning streak

PriceCarolina

Third in a row

The Canadiens enter the Olympic break on a high after beating Carolina 4-1 to complete a three-W week.

David Desharnais led the way with two goals, Ryan White got his second in as many games and Brian Gionta's empty-netter completed the scoring.

Carey Price made 31 saves.

Max Pacioretty was injured during the first period when he crashed into the Carolina net. He did not return to the game, but said after the game he will go to Sochi.

Nailing it down

David Desharnais made it 3-1 with his 11th goal of the season, six minutes into the third period.

With Anton Khudobin on the bench, Brian Gionta circled the Carolina net and tucked in his 11th.

Late explosion

For most of the second period, the Canadiens looked like a dozy team.

A turnover by Carey Price turned into the first goal of the game, by Drayson Bowman.

Then with a shade over two minutes left, David Desharnais converted a pass from Rene Bourque to tie it up.

And Ryan White, who'd been sent out for a D-zone faceoff (which he lost) put the Canadiens ahead when an Andrei Markov shot bounced off his back and onto his stick.

Drayson Bowman scored the home team's only goal.

Carolina outshot the Canadiens 14-8.

Max Pacioretty's injury is "lower body".

Pacioretty hurt

Max Pacioretty collided with the Carolina goalpost and left the game with an injury that may be his arm, shoulder, leg or ribs.

Whatever, the Canadiens leading goal scorer looked to be in distress.

Canadiens outshot the home team 10-7, but Carolina came closest to scoring when Andrej Sekera hit the post behind Carey Price on a power play.

Last one for a while

The Canadiens pay a supper-hour visit to Carolina, and then they're idle until Feb. 26.

In a New Year's Eve game at PNC Arena, the Canadiens blew a 3-0 lead, watched the Hurricanes score four unanswered and then got a third-period equalizer before Alexander Semin beat Carey Price 3:27 into Overtime.

Carolina outshot the Canadiens 42-25 in that game.

With the Olympic break looming, the Canadiens sit third in the Atlantic Division.

Carolina is three points out of a wild-card playoff spot.

Puck drops at a weird 6:10ish.

Our forwards are not creative and have low hockey IQ.. they’re so easy to defend against. Bourque actually looks decent tonight..

  23. Dave Jones says:

Hah, it’s the Habs that suck. We would be thrilled with the waves of pressure and puck possession if it were our team getting it done. Really notice Pac’s absence. Bourque seems to have perked up with DD #silverlinings

  44. UKRAINIANhab says:

    Soft soft soft call

  45. piter says:

Seems to me we’re getting shafted tonight.

  46. Dave Jones says:

I think Carolina’s dominance here is screwing with the refs vision. They can’t seem to imagine that Montreal could get deserve a power play when they can’t seem to touch the puck. But that’s what should have happened. A couple of missed calls on the Canes, then of course one on the Habs (though a fair one). Habs stink and the refs seem to agree.

  47. Sportfan says:

    WOW DD useless

  49. Mark C says:

Someone has a lot of money on Carolina tonight.

  50. Mondou6 says:

This is the second game this year where there have been some referee “irregularities” against us in Carolina.

Wtf. We get penalized the other way

  52. Rocket Riot says:

Talk about an embarassing team! Bust it up and move on to something better. Hear me MB???

  53. Harditya says:

What a mess. This team can’t score at all, thank god Canucks were missing half of their defense last night.

  54. 25Stanleycups says:

Dont worry Habs will show up for the last 10 minutes of the third period.

  55. UKRAINIANhab says:

    Wtf?????

  56. topher5468 says:

Khudobin played the puck twice outside the trapezoid, no call,

  57. slapshot777 says:

By the way the puck is bouncing tonight you would think this is an outdoor game.

  69. slapshot777 says:

Sloppy, sloppy game Hurricanes get a lucky goal. As usual Habs standing around trying to play goal and not one of the stop the puck but provide an excellent screen for the shooter.

  70. Harditya says:

This game is a mess, players have been running around since the beginning of the game. Olympic break hasn’t started just yet guys! Cmon, re-group!
