Liveblog: Game 59 – Canadiens enter Olympic break on a winning streak

Third in a row

The Canadiens enter the Olympic break on a high after beating Carolina 4-1 to complete a three-W week.

David Desharnais led the way with two goals, Ryan White got his second in as many games and Brian Gionta's empty-netter completed the scoring.

Carey Price made 31 saves.

Max Pacioretty was injured during the first period when he crashed into the Carolina net. He did not return to the game, but said after the game he will go to Sochi.

Nailing it down

David Desharnais made it 3-1 with his 11th goal of the season, six minutes into the third period.

With Anton Khudobin on the bench, Brian Gionta circled the Carolina net and tucked in his 11th.

Late explosion

For most of the second period, the Canadiens looked like a dozy team.

A turnover by Carey Price turned into the first goal of the game, by Drayson Bowman.

Then with a shade over two minutes left, David Desharnais converted a pass from Rene Bourque to tie it up.

And Ryan White, who'd been sent out for a D-zone faceoff (which he lost) put the Canadiens ahead when an Andrei Markov shot bounced off his back and onto his stick.

Drayson Bowman scored the home team's only goal.

Carolina outshot the Canadiens 14-8.

Max Pacioretty's injury is "lower body".

Pacioretty hurt

Max Pacioretty collided with the Carolina goalpost and left the game with an injury that may be his arm, shoulder, leg or ribs.

Whatever, the Canadiens leading goal scorer looked to be in distress.

Canadiens outshot the home team 10-7, but Carolina came closest to scoring when Andrej Sekera hit the post behind Carey Price on a power play.

Last one for a while

The Canadiens pay a supper-hour visit to Carolina, and then they're idle until Feb. 26.

In a New Year's Eve game at PNC Arena, the Canadiens blew a 3-0 lead, watched the Hurricanes score four unanswered and then got a third-period equalizer before Alexander Semin beat Carey Price 3:27 into Overtime.

Carolina outshot the Canadiens 42-25 in that game.

With the Olympic break looming, the Canadiens sit third in the Atlantic Division.

Carolina is three points out of a wild-card playoff spot.

Puck drops at a weird 6:10ish.

Two Québec boys, snowboarders Maxence Parrot and Sébastien Toutant talked trash about American mega-hero Shaun White before the slopestyle Olympic competition, but couldn’t back up their big talk with action in the finals, finishing fifth and ninth respectively. We’ll be left to wonder whether the medal hopefuls psyched themselves out by taking on the American half-pipe champion publicly, in the Twitterverse, whether they added pressure onto themselves and lost focus. I feared they might experience a backlash from the judges, but based on their runs there was no risk. They didn’t put themselves in a position where they could be robbed.

It was left to Mark McMorris, competing with a broken rib suffered at the X Games a couple weeks ago, to rescue the team with a gutsy bronze-medal performance. Kudos for a great show of courage and perseverance. And diligence and concentration, and focus on the task at hand, which is more that we can say for his teammates, who flubbed a great opportunity for themselves.

      • Un Canadien errant says:

Front, a lot of their smack is just jealousy. Shaun White has been huge for snowboarding, he deserves all the accolades and endorsements he’s received. Our boys, instead of trying to drag him down, should have gone out and made a statement by competing and winning their event. That’s how you make a name for yourself.

I’ve known Shaun White since he was a pre-teen coming to Whistler for summer camps. He’s not necessarily a lovable guy or the most accessible athlete, but no one should ever doubt his work ethic, his resolve, his courage. That kid has been going huge and pushing back the frontiers of snowboarding for a couple decades now.

    • DDO_Habs_Fan says:

yes, the leafs have some good products , but they wiil not be in the second season long with those young denfeseman, they have a good upside in the future though

  48. Habitoba says:

What does dressing Bouillon vs Parros mean? How about parity in scratches/games played? Can’t have Cube riding the pine all the time. Besides, who does Carolina have that would warrant having Parros in, anyways? Komi? Semin with his “playing the drums”-like fighting skills?

Spezza and Karlsson a combined minus 37 this season. Yikes!

  52. habs001 says:

Based on their position in the standings Habs management goal has to be to make the playoffs…If the Habs miss the playoffs they will probably pick the season would be considered a failure…Now some of the same fools gold is happening to the exact same posters when the Habs had their winning streak…they came back to reality during their losing streak but now are starting to think long playoff run again…The reality is that for the Habs to do anything in the playoffs it will be not because of superior talent …it will be because of great goaltending, winning the pp/pk battle(but playoff hockey will probably present minimal opportunities),surviving the domination that will happen in their zone by having lots of luck ..and scoring key goals, lucky goals and bad opposition goaltending goals…

  53. Un Canadien errant says:

On the one hand, not dressing George Parros for a road game may be seen as a shrewd peace offering to Kirk Muller, a virtual olive branch, a unilateral declaration of a non-aggression pact. It also gives Francis a game after sitting out of action for weeks.

On the other hand, for poor ol’ George, being sat even though all other forward reserves are hurt, and the coach choosing to go with eleven forwards and seven d-men rather than dressing you to have four full lines, that has to sting a little bit.

This is another indication that we’ll need to find another heavyweight for next season, since I can’t imagine Mr. Parros returning. If we decide we need one. And that means Frontenac’s dream of seeing Trevor Gillies in bleu blanc rouge still lives.

But i do have a begrudging respect for them, like you should with your arch rival, and always enjoy when they thump the Turds or the Leafs. @ Dunboyne Mike

    Hey Ireland

I was about to send out an APB to make sure you and family were OK and survived the UK storm I read about today.

I did some research and noticed that Dunboyne is on the Eastern side of Ireland and away from the big time 150KM/HR winds that hit your west coast.

Also saw some pics/videos of some incredible 60-70 ft. waves that hit the coast and the devastation involved.

Great to see you back and online.
HIO would not be the same without your wisdom and wonderful method of sagacious expression.

    • Dunboyne Mike says:

HA! Maritime! You’re very kind. And my ears — doubling as flotation devices — have gone pink!

Yes, Dunboyne is just beyond the county line of county Dublin, but is nonetheless very much part of the capital’s commuter belt. Here on the eastern side of the country we’ve had incessant rain most of the week but not the torrential downpours, flooding and oceanic battering that they’ve had on the west coast. There is talk of the government appealing to the EU for flood relief funds.

So thank you for your concern. If you thought I went under you must have missed a rather intemperate rant of mine yesterday! You should of course come and see Dunboyne first-hand: Timo and Front are already threatening to do so! I should be passing over your head this day week en route to Toronto for 7 days. I’m a big baby and will have my face pressed to the window (unless I cave and let my 10-yr-old have the window seat….), and so will be waving to you, Twi, Truro, Bill and the other maritimers.
