Liveblog: Game 58 – Hat-cioretty bags three as Canadiens win battle of Olympic goalies

Max-ed out

What a night for Max Pacioretty!

Three goals, to give him 26 on the season, and TWO missed penalty shots.

Ryan White and Tomas Plekanec got the other Canadiens goals.

Christopher Higgins and Alex Edler, both on power plays, scored for Vancouver.

Carey Price made 42 saves ... and WASSN'T one of the game's Three Stars.

Roberto Luongo stopped those two penalty shots, but was beaten on four of the 28 shots he faced.

Vancouver made it briefly interesting on a power-play goal by Alex Edler.

Historic

In the long glorious history of the Montreal Canadiens, no player has ever had two penalty shots in a game.

Until tonight.

Max Pacioretty had two in the second period and missed them both.

He also failed to score on a penalty shot against Roberto Luongo Oct. 12 in Vancouver.

Christopher Higgins' 16th, scored on a power play 2:30 into the period, had made this a one-goal game.

Vancouver outshot the Canadiens 15-8.

PP clicks

The Canadiens recently popgun power play got its seconds goal in as many games when P.K. Subban fired through a forest of legs and Max Pacioretty tipped it past Roberto Luongo.

Ryan White doubled the lead with his first goal of the season as two Vancouver defenders tied up Michäel Bournival and Luongo was down, looking in the wrong direction.

Carey Price made 12 saves.

Luongo was beaten on two of nine.

The Canadiens will begin the second period with Tomas Plekanec in the penalty box.

CA-REY! CA-REY! CA-REY!

This is not just another regular-season NHL game.

It's High Noon at 7:40 p.m.: Canadien vs. Canuck for the Team Canada goaltending  job.

Not that Mike Babcock is going to designate Thursday night's winner as his Number 1.

Team Canada's head coach probably has a pretty good idea of how he'll manage goaltending duties at Sochi next week.

But make no mistake: Carey Price will want to win this game.

And so will Montreal homeboy Roberto Luongo.

Their teammates will be eager to help, and that should make for a cracker at the Bell Centre.

Puck drops 7:40ish.
