Liveblog: Game 58 – Hat-cioretty bags three as Canadiens win battle of Olympic goalies

Max-ed out

What a night for Max Pacioretty!

Three goals, to give him 26 on the season, and TWO missed penalty shots.

Ryan White and Tomas Plekanec got the other Canadiens goals.

Christopher Higgins and Alex Edler, both on power plays, scored for Vancouver.

Carey Price made 42 saves ... and WASSN'T one of the game's Three Stars.

Roberto Luongo stopped those two penalty shots, but was beaten on four of the 28 shots he faced.

Vancouver made it briefly interesting on a power-play goal by Alex Edler.

In the long glorious history of the Montreal Canadiens, no player has ever had two penalty shots in a game.

Until tonight.

Max Pacioretty had two in the second period and missed them both.

He also failed to score on a penalty shot against Roberto Luongo Oct. 12 in Vancouver.

Christopher Higgins' 16th, scored on a power play 2:30 into the period, had made this a one-goal game.

Vancouver outshot the Canadiens 15-8.

PP clicks

The Canadiens recently popgun power play got its seconds goal in as many games when P.K. Subban fired through a forest of legs and Max Pacioretty tipped it past Roberto Luongo.

Ryan White doubled the lead with his first goal of the season as two Vancouver defenders tied up Michäel Bournival and Luongo was down, looking in the wrong direction.

Carey Price made 12 saves.

Luongo was beaten on two of nine.

The Canadiens will begin the second period with Tomas Plekanec in the penalty box.

This is not just another regular-season NHL game.

It's High Noon at 7:40 p.m.: Canadien vs. Canuck for the Team Canada goaltending  job.

Not that Mike Babcock is going to designate Thursday night's winner as his Number 1.

Team Canada's head coach probably has a pretty good idea of how he'll manage goaltending duties at Sochi next week.

But make no mistake: Carey Price will want to win this game.

And so will Montreal homeboy Roberto Luongo.

Their teammates will be eager to help, and that should make for a cracker at the Bell Centre.

Puck drops 7:40ish.

Check back later for live game blogging.

  2. Storman says:

PK taking a very very stupid chance there

  3. w.p.d says:

Yup, I’m good with trading Subban for a sniper

  4. Walmyr says:

is MT benching White?…maybe because he scored a goal…

  5. Al Burtlap says:

@CJ thanks dude. I’ve read all of your posts on the potential of trading some of our aging vets and I agree that it’s tempting, but it am still not sure that there is anyone ready to take Markov’s minutes especially…as for the rest, I say get what we can.

    • CJ says:

I absolutely respect that opinion. Replacement responsibility would not fall on any one individual, but would need to be shared by the entire 6 man unit.

I’m ok with keeping Markov, provided the deal is in the team’s best interest. 1-2 years at $5 -$6 million per year. Longer term or more money and I’m picking up the phone….

Regarding Gionta, I really do feel for the guy. I honestly think his injuries have caught up to him. I don’t see a downside to moving him when Chucky comes back. In fact, I think the line becomes better without him. The biggest factor to weigh IMO is that he wears the C.

Just my two cents. I welcome and respect everyone’s opinion. I truly enjoy these exchanges, especially following a win.

      • Al Burtlap says:

Agreed on the term concern for Markov, if we get him for 2 years max, at a reasonable rate $5-6 as you say, I am cool too. Anything longer and it’s a much harder decision.

As for Gio, I am less concerned with moving him on and it doesn’t feel like letting Koivu walk, or trading Carbo, Muller or even Keane for that matter. He has done his job, but I have never quite seen the same connection as those other Captain’s we let go. For that reason, I would be fine with parting ways with him.

  6. Hstands4Hockey says:

If I had one wish as a Habs fan it would be that the Bell Centre faithful stop singing that God Damn awful Ole song. Ole = Automatic Goal for the other team. It’s stupid and has nothing to do with Montreal, the Habs or Hockey. STOP IT!!

Rule #76: No Excuses, Play Like a Champion!

  7. db says:

Imagine if Max gets a 3rd penalty shot? Hat trick AND free wings

  8. RockinRey says:

Patches come in to help but doesn’t use his body at all

  9. Storman says:

    Frank Gallagher should be proud

  10. Al Burtlap says:

  11. TMan1969 says:

Imagine if Van nucks had no PP’s….shut out???

  12. nek25plus says:

    DONT sit back!!!

  13. piter says:

    Price bails out _______.

  14. SlovakHab says:

Nice job on the PK tonight, Douglas M.!

Finally we have that big body to screen the goalie.

  15. Sal from the Hammer says:

Guys wide open in the slot! Tsk Tsk

  16. kalevine says:

habs are in the box now
looking terrible and Canucks looking great as they press

  17. adadi says:

    Habs playing Therrien hockey again.

  18. jctremblay says:

Boone was right on..the Timeout would have been perfect right then and there..but noooooo…

  19. nek25plus says:

Ok…why do they do this? They try to lay back and defend against teams that are way larger. Not more skilled but way larger!!!

  20. Isn’t coaching responsible for not allowing the team to collapse and protect the lead? Five minutes left and the Habs are getting sloppy! Play 60 minutes!

    I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…

  21. RockinRey says:

@Boone .You would call a timeout but Therrien? Never

  22. Et le but says:

    Max with the empty-netter?

  23. Plekasuares says:

So whats next for “hands of moen”

  24. HardHabits says:

I can’t stop laughing when I think about how the bean counters at EOTP were lamenting the Diaz for Weise trade.

The trade was brilliant. Diaz sucks and Weise is proving to be a very serviceable 4th liner.

    • Until Diaz starts scoring as a D. Assist tonight. Possible he wasn’t allowed to play offensively on the Habs. Too much need for our D to be stay at home and look at the two PPG on us tonight…

      I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…

  25. kalevine says:

I am feeling uneasy about this

  26. duffy says:

Those two misses by Pacioretty may come back to Bite them .

  27. AceTen says:

Murray is a warrior, 1.5 mil for what he brings to the team is a bargain

  28. RockinRey says:

    lets close this out!!!

  29. kalevine says:

    someone give Eller a slap

  30. Habbu says:

Seems lately the refs definitely have it in for Gally

  31. Mark C says:

Why didn’t Murray clean the crease?

  32. WVHabsfan says:

Not sure why Murray was not clearing crease

  33. danhabsfan says:

Murray, your didn’t clean out the kitchen, why not?

  34. Storman says:

Edler definitely had money on the over tonight

  35. RockinRey says:

    Nice shot

  36. Propwash says:

    Price never saw that.

  37. kalevine says:

making the Canucks look like a power play powerhouse

  38. DipsyDoodler says:

    WTF was Murray doing there?

  39. Plekasuares says:

Nice shot. Still doesnt make up for the kick

  40. Dunboyne Mike says:

    @Al Burtlap!
Hey welcome! Keep lurking but post MOAR!
Don’t want to jinx the outcome, but it’s 3am here, have to hit the hay. Even JJ in Turku is catching zeds.
    Good night all.
    Good night, Fonzie.

(Very first post, eh AL? Blushing in Ireland! If you’re four years lurking, we must have started around the same time. Cheers!)

    • Al Burtlap says:

Slàinte Mike! Sleep well. I’ll post more. I’m inspired by the likes of Mattyleg, 24 Cups, Sholi, Burli, Frontenac, Chrisadiens, his dad, Mavid, Elle and a wack of other particularly positive posters!

  41. Al Burtlap says:

I have long thought that Ryan White is a hockey player. For the last two plus years he forgot that. It’s nice to see the guy I remember, and that our fourth line is becoming meaningful.

  42. Max says:

I’ll be happy if we take these two points but man oh man Vancouver are awful. They are slumping bad and missing a lot of regulars.

  43. Slackman says:

Jesus Luongo sold that. MT should be doing that dive hand motion that Tortorella was doing earlier. Gallagher just like skated by him and he dove like a sperm whale.

  44. habs001 says:

3-1 Leafs…no pp for Tampa so far

  45. danhabsfan says:

    Any update on Bournival?

  46. TMan1969 says:

Wouldn’t that be interference from Lou? Impeding Gally?

  47. w.p.d says:

Does MT do anything behind the bench, other than look stunned after each play?

  48. TMan1969 says:

How many power plays for the nucks…

  49. Rob Maguire says:

So sick of Lou’s flopping and bobbing.

  50. Et le but says:

Kill it off for Brendan boys!
    He’s earned it all season

  51. CalgaryHab says:

Anyone notice how Perimeteretty totally disses Gally to run over and give his little buddy a hug?(great pass by DD)
I’ve noticed a few times that Gally doesn’t seen to be part of their gang – even tough without him they suck

  52. nek25plus says:

Ok, can we get Bell Centre fans to drop the ole ole for now!? Teams hate when we do that and it makes them go harder! Enough !!!

  53. kalevine says:

feel badly for Bournival, such an energy guy. I hope it’s not a concussion

  54. Storman says:

Canadiens will get another one, Edler has the over at 5.5

  55. adadi says:

Is Gillis the worst GM in the league?

  56. Millsie says:

IMO Luongo is very overrated all because he was in nets for the 2010gold winning game. Boones gramma could have won in nets in that game!

  57. CJ says:

We need this win. Looks like Detroit, Ottawa and Toronto are all on their way to victories tonight. Washington and Philly won earlier. Edmonton did the eastern conference a huge favor by scoring a late goal to beat the Rangers at MSG.

    Go Habs!

  58. Plekasuares says:

    Price should start.

  59. Et le but says:

    Finish strong boys!

  60. Monahab says:

    Distinct kicking motion… goal! Lol

  61. habs001 says:

Many posters have seen the Diaz liability..but many posters have been blind to it..well if Plecks physically destroys Diaz maybe that opens some blind eyes..

    • kalevine says:

exactly, it’s not like Plecks is some sort of behemoth. Diaz could do well on a team like Boston or Ottawa, where there is an abundance of big D. I think he’ll be a poor fit on Vancouver as he proved to be on the Habs

  62. w.p.d says:

Not that this is conclusive but, who should Canada start in goal ?

  63. Walmyr says:

DD and Pleks???…what a weird game…thank you Edler!!!

  64. jctremblay says:

    Excellent, Smithers!

  65. Haborama says:

    OLE OLE OLE OLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  66. adadi says:

Nucks have usurped the Habs suckitude.

  67. Rob Maguire says:

DD falls on his own an awful lot.

  68. ffenliv says:

No goal. Distinct kicking motion. :)

Edit: thought I’d made a funny. See everyone beat me to it.

  69. Plekasuares says:

    Pleks scored boone

  70. db says:

Pleks outmuscles Diaz.. Nucks score on themselves again

  71. frontenac1 says:

Oops! Diaz pukes the puck and Habs score.

  72. kalevine says:

that looked like the Diaz we know

  73. filincal says:

  74. Al Burtlap says:

    Ca fait du bien!
