Liveblog: Game 58 – Hat-cioretty bags three as Canadiens win battle of Olympic goalies

Max-ed out

What a night for Max Pacioretty!

Three goals, to give him 26 on the season, and TWO missed penalty shots.

Ryan White and Tomas Plekanec got the other Canadiens goals.

Christopher Higgins and Alex Edler, both on power plays, scored for Vancouver.

Carey Price made 42 saves ... and WASSN'T one of the game's Three Stars.

Roberto Luongo stopped those two penalty shots, but was beaten on four of the 28 shots he faced.

Vancouver made it briefly interesting on a power-play goal by Alex Edler.

In the long glorious history of the Montreal Canadiens, no player has ever had two penalty shots in a game.

Until tonight.

Max Pacioretty had two in the second period and missed them both.

He also failed to score on a penalty shot against Roberto Luongo Oct. 12 in Vancouver.

Christopher Higgins' 16th, scored on a power play 2:30 into the period, had made this a one-goal game.

Vancouver outshot the Canadiens 15-8.

PP clicks

The Canadiens recently popgun power play got its seconds goal in as many games when P.K. Subban fired through a forest of legs and Max Pacioretty tipped it past Roberto Luongo.

Ryan White doubled the lead with his first goal of the season as two Vancouver defenders tied up Michäel Bournival and Luongo was down, looking in the wrong direction.

Carey Price made 12 saves.

Luongo was beaten on two of nine.

The Canadiens will begin the second period with Tomas Plekanec in the penalty box.

This is not just another regular-season NHL game.

It's High Noon at 7:40 p.m.: Canadien vs. Canuck for the Team Canada goaltending  job.

Not that Mike Babcock is going to designate Thursday night's winner as his Number 1.

Team Canada's head coach probably has a pretty good idea of how he'll manage goaltending duties at Sochi next week.

But make no mistake: Carey Price will want to win this game.

And so will Montreal homeboy Roberto Luongo.

Their teammates will be eager to help, and that should make for a cracker at the Bell Centre.

Puck drops 7:40ish.

    Distinct kicking motion… goal! Lol

  3. habs001 says:

Many posters have seen the Diaz liability..but many posters have been blind to it..well if Plecks physically destroys Diaz maybe that opens some blind eyes..

    • kalevine says:

exactly, it’s not like Plecks is some sort of behemoth. Diaz could do well on a team like Boston or Ottawa, where there is an abundance of big D. I think he’ll be a poor fit on Vancouver as he proved to be on the Habs

  4. w.p.d says:

Not that this is conclusive but, who should Canada start in goal ?

  5. Walmyr says:

DD and Pleks???…what a weird game…thank you Edler!!!

  6. jctremblay says:

    Excellent, Smithers!

  7. adadi says:

Nucks have usurped the Habs suckitude.

DD falls on his own an awful lot.

No goal. Distinct kicking motion. 🙂

Edit: thought I’d made a funny. See everyone beat me to it.

  34. Al Burtlap says:

Ok, second post ever…first is a response to Dunboyne Mike below. I keep imagining Murray with a post game interview saying something along the lines of “ya, I know my fenwick tonight was not quite where I want it, and my Corsi still needs work but did you see all those guys I kept outta Carey’s kitchen?”

  35. Sal from the Hammer says:

    Needed that!

FFS, now the government is trying to tell me how to drink?

  54. Sal from the Hammer says:

So Tampa pulls Bishop in the third, I don’t know why, and Laffs make it 2-0. WTF!!

  55. adadi says:

    Olympic goalers. Yeah baby!

  56. 25Stanleycups says:

40th gaol of the season for Ovy. In todays NHL, with less then 60 games played thats amazing.

    Gionta isn’t young…but he’s experienced

  58. TMan1969 says:

Veteran player, excellent character and team guy…

  59. Any reason why we’re not shooting? Can’t win if we don’t shoot. Came on late and noticed shots on…

    I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…

  60. RockinRey says:

Gagnon says MB told him he wants to keep Gio for next year….Are you kidding Me? Unreal

  61. jctremblay says:

Max looked like Gretzky on a penalty

  62. adadi says:

No way Markov gets five years. No way.

  63. Peter Young says:

Max was thinking too much on both the penalty shots. He changed his mind about the angle of his shot on the first and the second was just awful. He’s such a scoring threat because he takes his shots almost without thinking. The penalty shot gives him time to think, and there’s his downfall.

  64. Plekasuares says:

Isnt that awkward. St. louis we dont want you. Stamkos injured…st. Louis we want you now.

    • RockinRey says:

Why is that awkward… these guys have to put their egos aside….It may have been Yzerman trying to make amends. St Louis has to get over it. Yzerman was cut by team Canada a couple times. Scotty Bowman wanted to trade him…..He has to get over it. He can go over and now prove them wrong

    • adadi says:

Pretty sure the fan outcry is the reason St. Louis is going to Sochi.

  65. Plekasuares says:

Always go with speed on a ps

  66. Cal says:

Wow, Patches was horrible on that 2nd penalty shot. Would have been better off both times with a PP. too bad coach doesn’t get the choice.

  67. CJ says:

Lu’s stop on Prust changed the momentum of this game. Hopefully Price’s saves at the end of the second spark the boys and put the team back on track.

  68. Concussion on Bourni?

    I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…

  69. w.p.d says:

Price looks to handle his obligatory 36 shots. Routine evening….

  70. Peter Young says:

By the way, Toe Blake said he almost had a fit, and would have had Rousseau not scored on the penalty shot, because instead of taking the puck in Bobby let a slap shot go just inside the blue line. I think it was the night Rousseau got four goals.

    • JohnBellyful says:

Actually he got five. Back when the televised portion started well after the game did, I have a vague recollection of the Toronto broadcast crew reporting his mounting total as the night wore on.
From the Hockey Hall of Fame:

“In 1963-64, he scored 25 goals, five of which came in one game versus the Detroit Red Wings on February 1, 1964. Matters improved even more for Rousseau the next season when he led the team in scoring with 30 goals and 78 points. His 48 assists tied for the league lead with teammate Jean Beliveau and Chicago star Stan Mikita.”

  71. TMan1969 says:

    What happened to Bournival?
