Liveblog: Game 58 – Hat-cioretty bags three as Canadiens win battle of Olympic goalies

Maxvan

Max-ed out

What a night for Max Pacioretty!

Three goals, to give him 26 on the season, and TWO missed penalty shots.

Ryan White and Tomas Plekanec got the other Canadiens goals.

Christopher Higgins and Alex Edler, both on power plays, scored for Vancouver.

Carey Price made 42 saves ... and WASSN'T one of the game's Three Stars.

Roberto Luongo stopped those two penalty shots, but was beaten on four of the 28 shots he faced.

Vancouver made it briefly interesting on a power-play goal by Alex Edler.

Historic

In the long glorious history of the Montreal Canadiens, no player has ever had two penalty shots in a game.

Until tonight.

Max Pacioretty had two in the second period and missed them both.

He also failed to score on a penalty shot against Roberto Luongo Oct. 12 in Vancouver.

Christopher Higgins' 16th, scored on a power play 2:30 into the period, had made this a one-goal game.

Vancouver outshot the Canadiens 15-8.

PP clicks

The Canadiens recently popgun power play got its seconds goal in as many games when P.K. Subban fired through a forest of legs and Max Pacioretty tipped it past Roberto Luongo.

Ryan White doubled the lead with his first goal of the season as two Vancouver defenders tied up Michäel Bournival and Luongo was down, looking in the wrong direction.

Carey Price made 12 saves.

Luongo was beaten on two of nine.

The Canadiens will begin the second period with Tomas Plekanec in the penalty box.

CA-REY! CA-REY! CA-REY!

This is not just another regular-season NHL game.

It's High Noon at 7:40 p.m.: Canadien vs. Canuck for the Team Canada goaltending  job.

Not that Mike Babcock is going to designate Thursday night's winner as his Number 1.

Team Canada's head coach probably has a pretty good idea of how he'll manage goaltending duties at Sochi next week.

But make no mistake: Carey Price will want to win this game.

And so will Montreal homeboy Roberto Luongo.

Their teammates will be eager to help, and that should make for a cracker at the Bell Centre.

Puck drops 7:40ish.

Check back later for live game blogging.

    In 15 minutes our youngest boy will turn one. As a young parent, I gain so much pleasure from watching our two young men grow up, albeit way too quickly. I can’t wait to share the game we all love and continue to pass along the responsibility and privledge of being a Canadiens fan onto the next generation. The story below will help to illustrate why I consider it a privledge;

My profile picture was taken at Joe Louis arena, with our oldest boy. The trip was really an excuse to visit my uncle in Sarnia. Truth be told, although I don’t really believe in playing favorites with family, he was my idol. Only separated by 10 years, he was a major influence during my formative years. As a senior executive, he landed me my first job and provided counsel as I progresses through the organization.

Shortly after our trip, he passed unexpectedly, leaving behind his wife and three young children. As a season ticket holder, I reached out to the Canadiens to see if there was anything the organization could do for the kids. I made similar requests in Ottawa and Toronto where our business has boxes and seats. Nothing materialized in either city, however I received a phone call from Montreal. I spoke to an executive and hung up not knowing what to expect. Within two weeks a package arrived at the door. Inside were three personalized letters, written by Carey Price, each directed towards one of the children. He signed a photo for each and included his card.

This small gesture had a tremendous impact on my young cousins. It also galvanized my belief in what it means to hold the distinction as the most storied franchise in hockey history.

I hope I can bring a degree of respect and courtesy to this blog. I thoroughly enjoy conversing with each of you and hope my comments are as well received as those I also enjoy reading.

      Brilliant story, very well told.

Please don’t leave it here in the last post of the Liveblog! Could you re-post in the latest thread? Lots of posters will be very interested in this story (for lots of reasons).

Your family sounds great, and you’re so right about them growing up quickly. I soon developed a rule of never EVER wishing anything to hurry up, not crying in the night nor diaper changes nor not ever going out!

It helped a little, but not much! We have 5, CJ, the youngest is 10 (and spending a week with me in Toronto Feb 15-22), then 14, then three in third-level. The eldest is 21, and I look at him and cannot believe how recently it seemed he was in the back-pack on my back. All the cliches. So I’m glad you’re enjoying yours, and it’s great out how you’ve reached out to your poor nephews as well.

Fair play to you for giving hockey the chance to give back, and fair play to Carey Price.

      Cheers CJ!
      Mike

So Max has 26 goals on the season. Nice to see a Hab near the top of the NHL goal race…..it’s been a while.

    Any further word on Bournival?

The poor guy looked completely out of it as he shuffled down the bench to head toward the room. Have to think he suffered a concussion.

It’s a shame, too, as he was a good complement to that 4th line.

  7. Cal says:

Nice to see a game become one of those never-in-doubt types. Good on Patches for finishing any way he can. When it comes to a penalty shot, he should respectfully decline. ;)
Price at the top of his game, playing very solid hockey. All he needs is a team in front of him. 1 more and off to Sochi to be Canada’s goaltender.

  8. Willy the bum says:

I sense after the Olympics that every Hab player will be healthy. So many decisions for Therrien.

Like I said before the game: It is nice to see players from Switzerland on the other team for a change.

BTW just found out that Markov got a new agent. Something cooking…

    • D Mex says:

Sergei Berezin – it was being discussed on here earlier today, and just now on l’AC.
Sounds like a combination of factors, including Markov’s desire to help a friend who may be short on cash (?) Someone to talk with MB during the Olympic break (?) – we may know more soon enough.

      ALWAYS Habs -

  15. Peter Young says:

Well done lads and special congratulations to Max for managing to score a hat-trick while missing two penalty shots. If he’d connected on both of those, that would have put him in Maurice Richard territory. I never saw a CH player get five goals in a game, but I attended games in which Jean Beliveau and Stephane Richer got four and saw on TV several others, including Maurice, get four. Always nice to see one of our lads score three, but seeing one score four or five is a memorable occasion.

  16. Habcouver says:

Carey made many of the difficult saves look like easy ones.
    He had an under-rated game.

    Waiting patiently for #25

What would the Habs have to give up to get Okposo from the Islanders.

  21. ooder says:

the eotp guys on twitter are hilarious. Murray makes one mistake the tweet about it (including pictures)
Diaz spends the whole night getting outmuscled and giving up scoring chance after scoring chance and not a peep.
good win by the boys. a little undisciplined though

  22. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

If I’m the Habs, it is time to deal Moen. Rather have the two young speedsters on the 4th line instead of him.

  23. Willy the bum says:

Question: Is Mike Smith gonna play a game in the Olympics?

  24. adadi says:

Habs gave of 44 shots against probably the worst team in the league right now. I say again. Habs did not play great. 2 points is great, but ths type of play is catching up to the team since early December.

  25. habsfan0 says:

Pacioretty 1st player in NHL history with 2 penalty shots in same period.
Former Hab Erik Cole, while with Hurricanes, only other player to have 2 penalty shots in same game(scored on one of them.)

  26. Luke says:

So, what’s the issue with DD and Gallagher and Max?

  27. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

That goal by The Rat versus Tge Blues… Wow. Lucky Rat!

  28. adadi says:

Some kind of Ottawa 24 CH thing on CBC right now.

Canucks should have started selling in the off-season. This team’s window is closing fast. At least they got Horvath in the last draft.

  33. aversglay says:

    Ryan White for February Molson?

  34. GL says:

Price should have been the 2nd star, Max the 1st

  35. HardHabits says:

Noce to see Price not needing a shut out to get the win. Those Canucks are awful. No wonder getting Diaz was an upgrade for them.

  36. Jimmy9Toes says:

A few thoughts – too many penalties, especially when we are leading. I love how Galley goes to the net, but enough with the goalie interference crap. Man I am liking Douglas Murray, he knows he can’t skate but he clears the crease and is smart with the puck. Beaulieu is going to be a top 4 dman soon. Feel bad for Carey on the 2 goals allowed, one went off of Higgens leg and the other was a screen, he has to start for team Canada. I am liking Weiss so far, lots of jam and can skate like the wind.

  37. Habitoban says:

It’s Sunday morning in Winnipeg. You walk to the rink with a shovel and your stick and skates. You shovel the ice clean, cuz the warming shack is locked so there’s no scary, chain-smoking shackmeister to do it for you. You don’t really care. It’s chilly putting on your skates outside but it won’t matter once your feet freeze. And then you are off. No girls with their figure skates. No kids learning to skate and falling all over the place, no games of “pum, pum pullaway.” Just you and the cold prairie wind and some buddies skating as fast as you possibly can. Who couldn’t love our 4th line! Get well soon Bournival.

  38. CJ says:

Jokes aside, I just checked the box score to confirm Diaz played the whole game. Unless I’ve missed something, how he is/was considered a top four defencemen I’ll never know. I have nothing against the guy, but he won’t last in the Western conference when he is faced with a suffocating forecheck.

We got a fourth line player, for a 6-7 defencemen. We needed the fourth liner more then we needed the 6-7 defencemen. As far as I’m concerned, that’s the trade summary in a nutshell.

Shifting gears, I hope Bournival is ok and held back for precautionary reasons only. The break, which amounts to nearly three weeks,
comes at a perfect time for him.

    • D Mex says:

      ALWAYS Habs -
      D Mex

    • SUMO says:

Hi CJ. Something else to consider. Moen turns 32 in Apr. He’s had injury issues the past 2 seasons. If you look thru the Bulldogs line up we don’t have many big grinders type to replace him. So MB moves a depth player to make room for the Teams best prospect (Beaulieu), who is also bigger than Diaz. Adding more size on D for a young, good-size 4th line grinder which the Habs didn’t have in Hamilton.

Trading from a strength to shore up a weakness.

  39. HardHabits says:

Yeah. The Habs won but they sucked. I mean Max missed two penalty shots and Price let in two goals. Therrien should bag skate those lazy basterdz. *rolls eyes*

  40. nek25plus says:

Three stars should have been White, Gally and Price! Sitting back to defend leads is silly for this team?

  41. Haborama says:

If I could design a Hockey player, he would have Max-Pac’s goal scoring abillity, Murray’s size, Gallaghers heart, and Parros’ pugalistic skills.

  42. Habitant in Surrey says:

    …almost 50 shots against …which D has the injuries ???

…if Carey plays consistently like this in Sochi, no problem

  43. habsfan0 says:

Has an NHL player EVER had a game where he’s scored a hat trick and missed (or even had) 2 penalty shots?

  44. w.p.d says:

How was Price not a star ?

  45. AceTen says:

The boys are 2-0 with Weise in the lineup! Our saviour has arrived! Plan the parade!

  46. adadi says:

Good for the win. But In case you missed it, the Habs did not play a great game tonight.

  47. Luke says:

Did the coach who was so upset about goons being put out, that he earned a suspension just put his goons out in the last minute of a 5-2 game?

  48. danhabsfan says:

Price faced 44 shots, and the only goals they got on him were PP goals, and people, still like to rip him, shame!

  49. Rob Maguire says:

    Stars: Patches, Price and ???

  50. Al Burtlap says:

Pax coulda had 5 tonight…. Awesome
