Liveblog: Game 56 – Lost weekend for Canadiens

More scrums than goals

The game ended with a mad scramble in front of Winnipeg goaltender Al Montoya.

Glares, shoves, punched, angry words ...

But no goals.

The Canadiens scored twice on Super Bowl weekend.

Their opponents, Tampa Bay and Winnipeg, doubled the home team in 2-1 wins.

Price error cost winner

A little over a minute into the third period, Carey Price tried to clear the puck, but the attempt was intercepted by Andrew Ladd.

The Winnipeg captain fed Michael Frolik for an easy goal that proved the winner.

Finally, a couple goals

After Lars Eller hit the post behind Al Montoya, Tobias Enstrom opened the scoring on a soft wraparound that beat Carey Price short-side.

Brian Gionta dinged off the post before converting a sweet Tomas Plekanec pass to tie the game.

Canadiens outshot the Jets 12-9.

The period included several goalmouth scrums, the liveliest of which involved wee Brendan Gallagher and hulking Mark Stuart.

Two games

The visitors dominated early, jumping off to a 7-0 shot advantage before Rene Bourque uncorked a blistering 70-footer on Al Montoya.

But the Canadiens came to life en route to a 12-10 shot advantage in the period.

Let's try this again

Your Montreal Canadiens will try to redeem Super Bowl weekend when they play Winnipeg in a Sunday matinee at the Bell Centre.

With the Jets in the Western Conference, this is their only visit to Montreal this season.

The scalpers will make out like bandits.

The Canadiens beat the Jets 3-0 in Winnipeg on Oct. 15.

The Jets' poor start this season cost Claude Noel his coaching job, and Winnipeg is 7-2-0 since Paul Maurice took over.

After losing in Overtime to Tampa Bay on Saturday afternoon, the Canadiens spent a few hours in third place in the Atlantic Division before the Leafs' comeback win against Ottawa bumped them back down to Wild Card territory.

Puck drops 1:10ish.

  1. Tspidey78 says:

Isn’t it obvious why there was no interference call at the end of the game? Because Gally made it more than obviously he was fishing for a penalty. Refs don’t like being told how to do their jobs, particularly by young sh*t disturbers.

  2. port elgin says:

In typical Habs management fashion, MB will sit on his hands and pass wind at the trade deadline.

  3. Jdub1985 says:

Is it a French thing that the Perry’s, Penner’s and Getzlaf’s will never wear the CH?

  4. strunzo says:

The rules are one thing, the interpretation of the rules by the refs in another. You put your stick on an opposing player’s ass and you get a penalty. Ref has to call it. You mug (Stuart) a player (Gallagher) in front of the net, that is OK. At the end of the game, Gallagher is pushed over the back of the net, tries to escape out of the zone because Habs have pulled their goalie and the puck is out of the zone, he gets elbowed by Montoya, mugged, held and thrown to the ice by Stuart – apparently that’s ok. Four rules were broken, elbowing by Montoya, Roughing, interference and holding by Stuart. The rules are in place. This one is all on the referees.

  5. Thomas Le Fan says:

Wow. Can we say, “Popgun offence”? This team excels at making backup, rookie and otherwise unheralded goalies look like superstars. Hopefully when we get Alex G back after the break, we will have a little more powder in our chambers. As it is, the opponent takes away Subban, beats up on Gallagher and jumps on a mistake or gets a lucky bounce to take the lead and we’re toast. That and with no push back when our little guys get roughed up means we’re not going very far. Bourque is asleep, Eller is stunned, Plekanec and Pacioretty are streaky and Gionta can’t shoot straight and nobody except Gallagher and Murray show much grit. I can’t wait until we have Tinordi, McCarron and Crisp in the line-up.

Hockey isn’t everything … it’s the only thing … except for beer and guitars!

  6. FlyingFrenchie says:

Daniel Breire and my wife have something in common.
They both have a no movement clause.

  7. Maritime Ronn says:

You can talk about the refs all you wish but here is the bottom line.

The Habs now rank 26th in 5X5 hockey.
In the past 14 games on the PP, the Habs have 4 goals in 44 chances for a pathetic 9 %.

It’s time for the head coach to dedicate practise to shooting only.
    Get out those bulleyes.
It’s tiring to watch the Habs make opposing goalies all look like Vezina winners by either firing the puck directly at the goalie or shooting it wide.
And for sanity s sake, change up the bloody PP…

  8. habstrinifan says:

My apologies for being a sh**T arse. I have tried very hard not to post but couldnt help it today.

It’s not that we are sucking that bugs me. It’s even if we tank and hit bottom, we cant go out and hire the ‘best freakin team (GM/COACHES) available. And everyone knows why.

No other team in NHL operates with this reality.

  9. twilighthours says:

If the Habs lose the next three (it’s an easy scenario to envision), I’m rolling out the tank avatar.

  10. RockinRey says:

If this were baseball . This team would have warning track power!!!! Unreal.

Only the delusional believe that holding onto the vets are the way to go….Price might get hot. Murray might be a PK superstar……PK or Markov might contain Kessel or …..a Zetterburg or Datsyuk….but lets get real…..many of these guys will walk for nothing.

I like Markov….appreciate what he has done for MOntreal…..but are we Habs fans so in love with this guy that a few prospects and decent pick wont make a trade more palatable?

It may be time for some tough decisions….turning the page on a few vets. A full asssessment of the team and its play general play is in order.

Can they retool and compete?! Absolutely….Look at the Leafs….they seem to be a little ahead of Montreal in terms of overall talent and prospects( It pains me to say that) and it was not long ago they were divesting themselves of overpriced assets.

For anyone questioning parting with Markov….ask yourselves…would you rather have real assets for him if as is likely his play deteriorates in the next year or hold onto him because of what he has done for the Habs. Wayne Gretzkly played for 4 teams in the NHL!!!! Manage assets…..MB!!!

You are entitled to your opinion even if you are wrong.

    • habsfan0 says:

Everyone knows that most Leaf fans are Neanderthals.
But despite that,Laffs’ management does not make it a priority to seek out off ice personnel who are fluent in Klingon.

    • Bim says:

Markov’s play deteriorating? Its already deteriorated. I would unload him now before it gets worse. Can anyone use a pilon? Can anyone use a guy who just looks slow out there in just about everything he does. His power play days are behind him (moves the puck away to slow and gives the opposition too much of a chance to get in front of him). He’s be #1 to move on my list.

  11. BJ says:

One of the few positives is Beaulieu. Love his wheels and offense.

  12. DipsyDoodler says:

    The curse of Mattyleg.

  13. Bim says:

On with the Olympics and some great hockey! My advice to Price and Subban…stay in Sochi for an extended stay. Return in’ll be safe then!

  14. jrshabs1 says:

    The science is settled:
Small teams cannot sustain themselves in a regular NHL environment.

    MOAR BIGGAR!!!!!

  15. GL says:

Say what you want. The Habs are 13th in the weak Eastern conference in scoring and the Jets are 8th in the stronger Western conference in scoring. Maybe that’s the difference do you suppose!!! and the Jets were without a very good player in Evander Kane. This team is not a playoff team. They’ll be a joke.

  16. Bim says:

When all there is to look forward to is getting Ryan White back boy is your team in deep trouble…Lol…Lol…Lol! When you suck worse than Leafs your franchise is in trouble!

    • The Capitalist Pig says:

This franchise is no way in trouble. They can blow for another decade or two and still generate boatloads of scratch. Next massive torch ceremony will be on the 25th anniversary of the ’93 Cup.

  17. habstrinifan says:

    WOW! WOW! WOW!

What a great headline from Boone!

    More scrums than goals.

Bet MB and MT are delirious at the amount of character evidenced by all our scrums.

Everybody can hold thier heads high now. We showed up for the scrums.

  18. Mondou6 says:

I had to laugh at Boone’s opening comment:

“I’m so not into this game. But being the dedicated professional I used to be, I’ll feign passionate interest.”

That also describes the thoughts of many current players on the Habs.

  19. FlyingFrenchie says:

Boone’s headline should read.. “More Bums Than Goals”

  20. twilighthours says:

    So much suckitude.

Yeah, the refs blew the interference non-call on gally late in the third. But they they also didn’t call a penalty on montreal for all the sucking the the team did. Honestly, it could have been a major and game misconduct for Suckage.

  21. Mondou6 says:

My only hope is that MB has the cojones to be a seller at the trade deadline. We need picks and prospects, not a rental for our first round playoff exit.

  22. Old Bald Bird says:

It’s stunning to realize that the Habs would have won both weekend game 1-0 if not for brain cramps. Shutouts are the only way to go, guys.

  23. nova scotia vees says:

Molson is a weak owner…he is worried about a fine??? Would hardly put him in the poor house.

    • mksness says:

well i don’t know if complaining about it to the media will win the hearts of the refs. but if you think complaining will change it i guess he’s a weak owner.

habs need to generate more offence 5-5. that has nothing to do with the refs

  24. habstrinifan says:

It is so troubling! Not one player in at last 20 years , except maybe a goaltender, has emerged from the HABS environment and climbed onto the elite status of the NHL and stayed there.

    Not One.

I remember feeling lousy when Rucinsky was our star with 49 points.

    This is worse.

  25. duffy says:

According to many on here if the refereeing was perfect they would never lose a Game. Face reality folks this team Sucks . And until major moves are made it will continue to Suck. They will not be seeing any playoff action this season.

    • Mavid says:

I don’t think thats what most are saying..the officiating in particular at the end was suspect..its fair to complain..just like the Sens fans were doing last night when Kadri rammed Cici into the boards..nothing wrong with it when its legit..

      Weed Wacker Grandma Smurf

      • Stimpy007 says:

Okay so what if montreal got the call and we scored on the powerplay and tied the game? Then what even if we won or got a point this team needs more than officiating. It was a blown call but the more pressing issue is what direction is this team/franchise going? Are they going to ride out with this squad or try and improve by changing personnel?

  26. Tspidey78 says:

Love the comments about “Who’s Montoya” and “Habs making no-name goalies look good.” Why don’t you guys check Monty’s stats this year?…

  27. 1010 says:

If these guys were in the EPL people would be complaining that they need a world class striker.

    GO HABS……

  28. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

It is clear the Habs are going to need two power forwards next season for Max-DD and Gally-Pleks. If MB can get one this season, great, but I don’t see it happening.

    • mksness says:

well how are you going to get him? if you trade for one, you’ll have to look at what assets the habs can move. i don’t think they have much to offer that other teams want; or pieces we want to move

  29. Habcouver says:

    Hello all and Happy Sunday!
From what I saw of today’s afternoon game, I am pretty proud of the effort. Sure we lost but when I see how hard they were working, the 31 shots, and 2 goal posts, our Habs could have easily put this one away.

I’ll say again that Nathan Beaulieu is getting better and better and he WILL be a beaut very soon.

Go Seahawks! I will be wearing my Habs top proudly at the Superbowl party 😀 !

    Waiting patiently for #25

  30. gumper says:

Well, miracles can happen. Found myself in complete agreement with PJ Stock when he spoke about Montreal’s net presence. How come the only guys that go to the net are under 5′ 9″? Can’t Therrien go to Borque and Eller and say, “Go to the net or sit!”?

The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane.
    Mark Twain

    • mksness says:

when chucky is back i guess that just might happen. it’s just hard to threaten a player when u have no depth to replace them.

i’m really disappointed with eller this year. i think it’s time to make a decision on this guy.

    • BCG says:

Absolutely agree. I’d also add MaxPac in that – get over the suspension already.

    • Frank2468 says:

Eller maybe may get it but as far Borque is concerned that guy is brain dead just seeing him on the ice pisses me off what a waste of time money and effort. Forget trading him nobody will with half a brain will want him, just cut bait and put him on waivers and move on. Either way on the ice or in the press box he costs the Habs money and if he clears waivers then let him rot in Hamilton.

      • mrhabby says:

we did get fucale in the trade.

        • Frank2468 says:

Well that’s true but Fucale can’t put the puck in the net, this team simply can’t score. We could have a piece of plywood in net that is 6 feet by 4 feet and still would lose. This team needs a big time goal scorer and a few more players like Gally just a little bit bigger. The reason the city won’t take a rebuild is cause they have been waiting for over 20 years now and are getting frustrated and telling fans now after 20 years of nothing to wait for another lets say 5 years is asking a lot. The rebuild is 15 years over due.

    • Bim says:

He could ask Bourque and Eller to go to the net but they’re soft. Problem with these guys being so bad is..where do you start and who do you pick to move out of town? Guess you could just about pick anyone and a lot of them too. That would get your salary cap number down. Start waiving the white flag now its getting ugly out there!

    • kalevine says:

statistically speaking, any time a Habs player does anything there is a good chance he is under 5’9

  31. jsaz says:

Mtl should have tanked the whole season and got a good draft.

  32. The Capitalist Pig says:

When your big guys don’t play big, what hope do the small guys have?

  33. Bim says:

Don’t see any end to losing with this group. Just tank already! Zero entertainment value!

  34. FlyingFrenchie says:

Excluding a few of our players…It’s hard to make orange juice from lemons. The real question is…How did we end up with so many lemons?

  35. The Capitalist Pig says:

Hey, when was the last time Lars Gomez scored?

  36. 25Stanleycups says:

To people who haven’t realized yet. The HABS are the same as the LEAFS, millions of dollars of profit, and all the players are treated like royalty, and paid millions themselves. The product and result is irrelevant.

If it aint broke dont fix it.

As Long as they keep selling out of beer, smoked meat and poutine. Everyone is happy, except the true fans.

And management dont care. And why should they, no ones boycotting.

  37. topher5468 says:

Seriously, yes, there should have been a call on Gallagher there, on Trouba, but that’s not why the team lost, when the emotion from losing subsides, we all know they lost because they can’t score, the PP is a non advantage lately and ice time is given to players that don’t deserve it.

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  38. Sportfan says:

What a disappointing game and weekend hockey wise.

Sports and Entertainment in the link click and enjoy, clicking is fun!

  39. Tom says:

Montreal has lost 17 games where they have scored 1 goal or less. How many games do we expect Montreal to win scoring one goal? They won one game 1-0 over NewYork.

The fan have full control over the NHL. The fans can bring the NHL to their knees. How? Not going to the games. Not buying merchandise.

  40. ProHabs says:

Gallagher takes 2 stupid penalties in the game, including 1 with the Habs on the power play with 5 minutes left to play. When his penalty is over, he is back on the ice plus back on the ice for the whole last minute.

Our best player and Norris trophy winner takes 1 bad penalty against Philly and he rides the pine for half the period and the coach says no one is above the team concept.

Where is the fairness in all of this. Why is Gallager given preferable treatment from the coach and Subban is not. Hasn’t Subban done more than Gallagher to get the benefit of the doubt once in a while.

  41. homerbowen says:

AHHHH quit whinning about the ref’s…we’re just plain sucking.

    • J Haul says:

When you’re playing such tight games bad refs can make a huge difference. That’s what happened this game… along with a couple junk goals against.

      • topher5468 says:

If we had a good PP, maybe, but calls generally go both way in games, the game was only tight because the team can’t score. Plenty of chances, a few posts and 2 bad goals that this current team can’t overcome.

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  42. boing007 says:

Need more than just Galchenyuk to turn this feeble team around.

  43. habstrinifan says:

    duffy :February 2, 2014 at 3:42 pm

This team sucks ,plain and simple. Including PRICE AND SUBBAN.

    Which is the most

    One guess!

Edit! You know how bad this is? I lived for Boone’s Blog. Now I cant be bothered. Poor guy I dont know how he manages to do a blog.

  44. billylove says:

After watching the Blackhawks and Sharks last night this was like watching two decent minor league teams play. The boys just don’t have the horses necessary to win on a consistent basis. Well, guess we’ll just wait another couple of years for Lars Eller et al to develop.

  45. HABSnEXPOS says:

So we gave briers more minutes like everyone suggested so is it fair now to go back and sit him in the press box

  46. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

It is clear the refs have it in for three Hab players: PK, Prust and Gally.

  47. rljmartin says:

Replay on RDS just beautiful…. Gally draws about 4 penalties in 15 seconds and the ref watching all of it….. Gally has a LOT of fortitude for not whacking someone with his stick….WTF

  48. homerbowen says:

Why is Gionta out there pushing and shoving bigger players in the last minute of the game? Why was Briere on the ice? What is DD doing there? Is MT nuts? Time to make a change….the Jets did!!!
Great effort from Gallagher but he’s still knocked on his ass most of the time…. keep him but get rid of our other smurfs. Enough is enough. What has MB done (signs MT and Briere), the only happy people with that are the boys at RDS.
Keep the “locals” happy and we’re going to keep getting worse.

    • DDO_Habs_Fan says:

I agree. With 6 seconds left, the only play was a point shot. No reason to have small wingers on the ice. Point shot and crash the net was the only play.

    • encore4 says:

Gionta, scored earlier, hot hand. Briere, to win the face off. DD, to win the face off if Briere gets kicked out. Face off had to be won, with three players going to the net how much size do you need?

  49. Maksimir says:

does Eller still play for the Habs? Haven’t seen him around for the past couple months…

  50. Harditya says:

    Price error cost winner
How about Habs offense not getting anything done? 11 goals in last 7 games. There’s not enough words to describe the brutality up front.

  51. Max says:

Can’t score and zero offensive creativity on this team.Same problem for years now.The Leafs suck but they have scorers. The habs make Al fuc*&^# Montoya look like a star. It’s getting tiring.

  52. Jammin says:

Can’t believe ref didn’t call interference against Gallagher. Hlabs need help on offense.Wouldn’t. Diaz and Beaulieu be the best 2nd wave option on the powerplay? And as a pairing better than Beaulieu- Murray

  53. Bim says:

These guys should just give up and go get the first draft choice!

  54. mrhabby says:

with a little more than 2 minutes left they have bork , prust and eller now thats a killer line.

with 2 games left before the games will it be the same cast of characters after the games are over.

this was all very predictable after the boston win.

  55. HABSnEXPOS says:

Plecanek is a superstar… Best player in the nhl

  56. BJ says:

Timo will have had the last laugh in this last sequence of ineptitude. Enjoying his cruise while we watch this kind of crappy hockey.

  57. Plekasuares says:

There was 1 penalty on Gallagher

  59. The Puckhound says:

1 point out of 4..that’s pathetic. This team making the playoffs will be a big task. The last three weeks have been terrible!
Where is Marc Bergevin? Time to stand up and do something.…do something!

Go to the net and keep your stick on the ice!

  60. big_green_puffin says:

The time has come for Geoff molson to step into the media and blast this garbage league and it’s garbage refereeing! The calibre of officiating is so low, and it seems that they are constantly against the canadiens!

  61. Habs4LifeInTO says:

Yes, the Habs could score once in a while and make the shitty reffing a moot point, but, That garbage on Gallagher at the end of the game and no call? That was a disgrace. If I’m coaching that the Habs I pull them off the ice and get fined! I would not be able to handle reffing like that!

    24 cups and counting….

  62. Sal from the Hammer says:

So sick of how awful the reffing is in this league! Just because it’s bad for everybody doesn’t make it OK!! Wake up NHL, there is no league that has worse reffing than yours!!

  63. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

I wish Mark Cuban was the Habs owner. He’s willing to take 100K fine to call out this reffing crap. Are goalies allowed to punch players??? What a disgrace…

At least Briere jumped the goalie at the end. I’ve been waiting since Lemieux/Chelios for someone to do that.

    • mksness says:

it wasn’t really a punch but maybe prust should lay off the goalies.

if u skate in the crease goalies will fight back once in a while. still there should have been a penatlty on the D for not letting him exit after

  64. ProHabs says:

Unbelievable. Gallagher takes 2 stupid penalties in the game, including 1 with the Habs on the power play with 5 minutes left to play. When his penalty is over, he is back on the ice plus back on the ice for the whole last minute.

  67. D Man says:

Shyte refereeing yeah, but you got to score goals. Mein gott!

You can’t be both a Habs and a Leafs fan

  68. kalevine says:

I really think they had a lot of chances and didn’t play badly. But lack of finish continues to be the issue.

  69. The Juice says:

Mabey we still woulda lost…..but that is horrific officiating !

      Habs, OLE !

    • Habs4LifeInTO says:

I agree the Habs could score but the reffing is atrocious and that is not debatable!

      24 cups and counting….

  71. icemachine says:

Far as I can tell the Refs have something about Gally they just don’t like

  72. The_Truth says:

It’s a shame. They played pretty well, just can’t score. Frustrating, but what can we do? No prospects to help this year or next and just too many holes and average players.

It’s going to take a bold move by MB to change things and even then, it won’t make this team a contender.

  73. RockinRey says:

Pk over Gallagher for a star? dont think so!

  74. darkhorse says:

    3 Stars of the game:
    #4 Wes McCauley
    #17 Frederick L’Ecuyer
    #31 Carey Price
