Liveblog: Game 56 – Lost weekend for Canadiens

Beaulieu-Buff

More scrums than goals

The game ended with a mad scramble in front of Winnipeg goaltender Al Montoya.

Glares, shoves, punched, angry words ...

But no goals.

The Canadiens scored twice on Super Bowl weekend.

Their opponents, Tampa Bay and Winnipeg, doubled the home team in 2-1 wins.

Price error cost winner

A little over a minute into the third period, Carey Price tried to clear the puck, but the attempt was intercepted by Andrew Ladd.

The Winnipeg captain fed Michael Frolik for an easy goal that proved the winner.

Finally, a couple goals

After Lars Eller hit the post behind Al Montoya, Tobias Enstrom opened the scoring on a soft wraparound that beat Carey Price short-side.

Brian Gionta dinged off the post before converting a sweet Tomas Plekanec pass to tie the game.

Canadiens outshot the Jets 12-9.

The period included several goalmouth scrums, the liveliest of which involved wee Brendan Gallagher and hulking Mark Stuart.

Two games

The visitors dominated early, jumping off to a 7-0 shot advantage before Rene Bourque uncorked a blistering 70-footer on Al Montoya.

But the Canadiens came to life en route to a 12-10 shot advantage in the period.

Let's try this again

Your Montreal Canadiens will try to redeem Super Bowl weekend when they play Winnipeg in a Sunday matinee at the Bell Centre.

With the Jets in the Western Conference, this is their only visit to Montreal this season.

The scalpers will make out like bandits.

The Canadiens beat the Jets 3-0 in Winnipeg on Oct. 15.

The Jets' poor start this season cost Claude Noel his coaching job, and Winnipeg is 7-2-0 since Paul Maurice took over.

After losing in Overtime to Tampa Bay on Saturday afternoon, the Canadiens spent a few hours in third place in the Atlantic Division before the Leafs' comeback win against Ottawa bumped them back down to Wild Card territory.

Puck drops 1:10ish.

MB time to do something besides calling up an AHL prospect to play 5 shifts..

  2. RockinRey says:

So do you bench Gallagher after the penalty to send a message like they did with PK? Keep in mind this I am a fan of both. Just dont ge the coaches thinking.

  3. Habbu says:

So frustrating to watch this bunch…….

  4. Clay says:

    This is ugly

We played well against Chicago a few weeks back. We played well against Boston. So we can play well, but we stink more often than playing well. So confusing and frustrating.

  6. nova scotia vees says:

Price lets in 2 stinkers, but some of you are blaming P.K?? Your biases are showing guys. He should always shoot..but dumbo therrien would bench him…so he hesitates..

    • Clay says:

PK is full value for criticism lately. Trying to do too much, not making smart plays. He’s costing the team.

  7. Habsbill24 says:

These last ten games or so shows how much this team misses the creativity of Galchenyuk. Once you get past Max and Gallagher, there is none on the other three lines.

  8. Plekasuares says:

Should be 1-0 still for Habs

  9. Et le but says:

    Now’s our chance!

  10. danhabsfan says:

How was that not a penalty?

  11. Danno says:

    Hey Habs!

Y U No put puck in net?

  12. Tom says:

Montreal has lost 17 games where they have scored 1 goal or less. How many games do we expect Montreal to win scoring one goal? They won one game 1-0 over NewYork.

  13. RockinRey says:

Who is Montoya again???/ Boy the Habs make these no names guys into matinee stars dont they!

  14. The Puckhound says:

This can’t continue…Marc Bergevin needs to do something!
What could they get for Markov?

Go to the net and keep your stick on the ice!

    • RockinRey says:

I agree ! For anyone who is emotianally attached to Markov… see Koivu. He walked for nothing. Why? Because Gainey did not want to be the guy who traded him? Tell him you will send him to a contender and then sign him to a 2 yr deal in the summer!!!!

  15. homerbowen says:

    Pathetic!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do we have any players that can score goals on a regular basis?
The Laffs are 10 years ahead of us in this regard. Our organization is too busy trying to keep the “locals” happy. Until “that” changes expect to be mid to low level pack which means no cup.

  16. Habilis says:

I’ve seen this movie before. It sucks.

  17. durocher says:

With due respect to Prust, MT should be shortening his bench at this point

  18. CHicoHab says:

Habs between yesterday’s game and today’s game do not look like a team in charge at home. No one fears coming to play in Montreal anymore.

  19. Habbu says:

2 goals in 2 games…….How many games can you win doing that?

  20. morivera says:

PK is playing the game like an NFL kick-off returner. he is trying to go through the whole team 10 times. I hope he keeps it simple. He is not Bobby Orr.

  21. RockinRey says:

A Byfuglien type player to get dirty and a couple guys with some finish could help this team

  22. kalevine says:

not shaping up to be a great weekend in front of hometown fans

  23. Et le but says:

Despite the softie and the puck handling gaffe, Carey is keeping them in this…
I feel the tying goal coming up, Habs are pressing and the Jets D is not immune to coughing up the puck

  24. Plekasuares says:

    C’mon someone score

  25. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Every game–or so it seems–requires heroics to win for this team. It wasn’t always like this boys and girls. Late last century the CH could dial it most nights and still win. Ah, the good ol’ days…

  26. habsfan0 says:

Habs’ offence not quite as prolific as Denver Broncos’ offence.
    Or,Buffalo Bills’ for that matter.

  27. thehockeynews says:

Montreal has 8 Olympians and we play average. Something is wrong.

  28. port elgin says:

M.B your team can t score.

    Do something

  29. kalevine says:

let’s just get another loser point

  30. Storman says:

Subban showing all the tell tale signs of being tired and burnt a little, he is just a little off battling the puck and fighting his decisions,, thinking way too much for an offensively gifted player

  31. topher5468 says:

Totally disagree, PP looks horrible, any team can pass the puck around, their a man up, there’s no plan. no one in front. and nothing goes down low, everyone knows PK wants to shoot,

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  32. CHicoHab says:

When you have snipers on the team all those zillion passes are good. But when you don’t (as in our team) just hurry up and shoot and be sure we have someone infront of their crease.

  33. RockinRey says:

even game…. they just are not getting bounces….no finish. Step up Briere, Eller or Patches….

  34. Propwash says:

Man, the powerplay is infuriating to watch. Stop with the pretty stuff, park someone up front and throw pucks at the net.

  36. habs-fan-84 says:

Subban can not continue to be the focal point of this PP.

  37. Habbu says:

I hope PK doesn’t see the ice at the Olympics……he needs a rest

  38. Danno says:

Slick passing but no biscuit in the basket… :-(

  46. Tom says:

Habs have one PP move – Get back to the D for a slapshot.

  47. Cdnman1 says:

Don’t tell me? A Montreal call for interference! Wow.

  48. The Puckhound says:

Here’s the game on the PP!

Go to the net and keep your stick on the ice!

  49. RockinRey says:

Briere off the half boards. Get it into the zone and set up!!!

  50. Clay says:

    An opportunity presents itself….

    The ever dangerous habs PP

  53. Et le but says:

This game is FAR from over folks…
Habs pushing the pace; LOTS of time left

  54. Chuck says:

Man, I hate the trapezoid rule. But to put it simply, Price doesn’t have to play that puck if the Hab defender doesn’t get beaten to the puck. Additionally, who missed their check on the goal scorer, who was wide open in the slot?

  55. port elgin says:

    DD..heart of a garden gnome

  56. danhabsfan says:

We need someone who can finish

  57. Habbu says:

Wonder how much goal support Carey has got from this bunch over his last 10 games?

  58. Tom says:

The way Carey Price has keep the Habs in games this season when they had no business even being in the game I can not rag on him for this. Better goalies than Price have screwed up plays like that before.

  59. thehockeynews says:

Beaulieu is going to stay up all year. He’s an NHL player

  60. port elgin says:

    Habs are toast

  61. The Puckhound says:

    Travis Moen has one speed….SLOW!

Go to the net and keep your stick on the ice!

  62. B says:

Nice play by the kid to break up that 2 on 1. I like how he is playing, smart and not trying to do too much.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  63. Storman says:

Price deserves to be bailed out by the team,, they should play their asses off for him now to not let that be the winning goal..Lets see if these guys step it up,

  64. RockinRey says:

If Jets bag another its over!!!

  65. ffenliv says:

I think the biggest problem with the team – and I won’t bother with suggestions of where it comes from – is the inability to play through games where parts aren’t going off as well as they could.

Tonight, Patches/DD/Gallagher have had a lot of offensive zone time, but couldn’t finish to save their lives. However, while there have been chances from other spots, only one has gone in. So, the team isn’t scoring.

But oops! The goalie has given up 2 bad ones.

Other nights the PP will let them down.

When one of these things goes off, the team can’t muster enough anything from other components/lines to be competitive.

  66. Et le but says:

Again, good push back right after the gaffe goal.

  67. Grimmly says:

haha Cary doesn’t believe in his defense, he just proved it, and i font blame him

  68. FrederictonHabsfan says:

Surprising back to back starts for Carey and he commits two uncharacteristic mental mistakes that lead to goals. Poor decision by Therrien.

  69. Tom says:

Yes that one was on Price BUT it would be nice to see his D bail him out sometimes.

  70. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

    Smarten up Carey.

  71. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

Hey Boone. Why you curse the Habs with a regulation loss? Why fore?

  72. WindsorHab-10 says:

    Nice play dumbass.
