Liveblog: Game 55 – Canadiens drop matinee 2-1 to TB in OT

PriceTB

Thompson ends it

The Canadiens began Overtime on a power play and carried the play for most of the time.

But with 24 seconds left, Alex Killorn found Nate Thompson alone in front of Carey Price, and the Lightning's 36th shot – and first of OT – found the back of the net.

Briere ties it up

Despite minimal ice time, Daniel Brière has goals in two straight games.

The vetran took a pass from Brian Gionta to beat Ben Bishop.

That was it for scoring as we head to OT.

Full moon tonight?

Weird 20 minutes.

With Tampa Bay shorthanded, Nate Thompson's lob across the face of the Canadiens' goal ticked off P.K. Subban's stick and into the net past Carey Price.

Then there was a brawl during a TV timeout.

Unpleasantness began with Ben Bishop and Brandon Prust jabbing at each other, soon to be joined by George Parros and Radko Gudas, both of whom got misconducts.

Canadiens outshot the Lightning 10-8.

Molson Cup form

Carey Price, Player of the Month for January, is off to a good start in February.

Price made 10 saves and stopped Nikita Kucherov on a penalty shot during 10 minutes dominated by the visitors.

The Canadiens had six shots on Ben Bishop.

Afternoon delight

It's a Super Bowl weekend tradition: Your Montreal Canadiens play a pair of afternoon games at the Bell Centre.

A year ago, in the seventh and eighth games of a lockout-shortened season, the Canadiens swept Super Bowl weekend with a 6-1 romp over Buffalo on Saturday and a 2-1 squeaker against Ottawa on Sunday.

The 2014 opponents are Tampa Bay and Winnipeg, both of which present challenges ... but who doesn't, where the Canadiens are concerned.

Wins against Carolina and Boston gave the Canadiens a 6-6-1 record in January.

The team was 8-5-0 in October, 7-4-3 in November and 8-5-1 in December.

Because of the Olympic break, the Canadiens will play only seven games in February – five at the Bell Centre.

Two previous games against the Lightning this season went to Shootouts and ended with 2-1 final scores. Tampa Bay won at the Bell Centre Nov. 12, and Lars Eller, of all people, secured a Shootout win in Tampa on Dec. 28.

Dominate Boston, get owned by the Lightning. MT sucks.

    • habulations says:

The Habs get into a defensive shell with Price in net. You don’t win at hockey by scoring one goal. They need to use their speed, attack…get goals. Let Price earn his paycheck. We need the boys at the other end of the ice scoring goals…..not everyone playing defensive hockey when they’re losing.
Should have played Budaj. The boys play more offensive when he’s in net.

  2. theox_8 says:

Fools on here blaming PK. Can you even imagine our team without him , he by the way is our leading point getter. We would be terrible . So please get the sand out of your +++inas and smarten up.

  3. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Habs lost because they couldn’t beat Bishop. That simple. Refs were crap but what else in new??? At least they got a point…on to the next one.

  4. Thomas Le Fan says:

Very unhappy with the officiating. We should have been back on the power play after the grab on Subban, instead we get scored on. How the heck did we end up short handed after Bishop threw the first punch? Disappointing result. We didn’t play badly but we need to shoot the puck.

Hockey isn’t everything … it’s the only thing … except for beer and guitars!

    • ABHabsfan says:

Bishop should have gotten the game because he punched with his blocker. Automatic game misconduct

  6. GL says:

If anyone thinks the Jets will be any easier than Tampa Bay. Not so quick. Winnipeg has played some great hockey lately and they have a team that can put the puck in the net. Gonna be a good one than again maybe not.

  7. Plekasuares says:

PUT BRIERE WITH PLEKS AND GIO

  8. Eddie says:

    Anyone impressed with Christian Thomas?

Didn’t see much of him. How many minutes did he play?

Man that Therrien is such a genius, how he “protects” young players from showboating their talent, and how he keeps them pinned to the bench so they can watch and learn!

    • jols101 says:

8 minutes. Didn’t really notice him at all. Nothing good but nothing bad as well. Therrien isn’t great for young players. Just look at Galchenyuk, the best young player we have had in decades and he still rides the pine all the time. Therrien is a buffoon.

    • Steven says:

The one play I noticed him, I found he had some wheels and knew where to get to for scoring chances. He didn’t exactly have linemates to dish to him on that shift but if he did he woulda scored, guaranteed.

    • ABHabsfan says:

He had a good shot-block in the 1st

!8 year old Nathan MacKinnon has a goal and 2 helpers already this afternoon. That gives him 20 goals and 20 assists for 40 points in 54 games. The Avs got themselves a beauty.

  10. GL says:

I look at it this way. We are what we are. We’re not good at scoring. I believe we’re 24th in the league that should tell you something. If a team has a bad game or our Goalies stand on their heads we can beat some pretty good teams. Lot of people complain about our defense. we’re 6th in the league. I wouldn’t say that’s too bad. up front is our biggest problem and sometimes they surprise. anyway

Today we played well enough to win. Just couldn’t get the job done but a good effort in any case. We salvaged a point toward a playoff position!!!

  11. thebonscott says:

Shouldn’t cost to much to resign Eller, I love him but having a bad contract year

C’mon guys this is not rocket surgery!!!!

  12. Marc10 says:

I would have tried Danny B instead of DD on the PP. In the same spot, Danny would shoot and that frees up PK. Just a thought… hindsight is 20/20.

At least we got a point. The Lightning played a great road game. They are awful to watch and are extremely lucky not to get more turnovers, but you can’t argue with results. I despise them.

    • RockinRey says:

Agree they should be using him more on the PP with Patches and DD…..Briere off the half wall or cycling to look for open pass from DD

If Briere played between Max and Gally, he would put up the same numbers and probably more. If I was a team with size but needed some scoring (e.g. LA), I’d trade for him. Probably get him for nothing from the Habs.

  13. Max says:

A victory tomorrow will make this a pretty successful weekend.3 out 4 points would be great and that’d be 7 points out of the last 8.

I missed most of the game but did manage to see Briere’s goal. I hope the league doesn’t suspend him for his goal celebration (j/k) but I recall him doing the same so often when he was a Flyer. I hope to see many of DB48’s celebrations come the playoffs!

I’m not totally disappointed with this afternoon’s game. Price played well; NB40 is going to be an absolute gem in a year or two; we snag an important point in the playoff race.

Hope the Laffs get shellacked – no circus three-point match please!!!

    Waiting patiently for #25

  18. 1010 says:

And……back to one goal per game.

    GO HABS…

  19. munch17 says:

It’s hard to believe that MT keeps putting DD out on PP.
Started all 4 PP today. Pathetic.
The last PP – on the ice for 1:51 out of 2:00 including all of 4 on 3.
    Pathetic.
Why can”t management not see that he is not a bonafide number one center. Chances from his line are coming from Pacs size, speed , and skill, and Gally’s heart and determination.
They would be so much better with any one else!!

I am no fan of DD but he looks way more involved from what i have seen. The PP guys were all guilty of getting way to cute. The looks were there for PK and dd and they did not shoot.

I noticed in the PP late in the game for Tampa that they had all kinds of room and the Habs were giving them way too much respect.

He is so terrible. Any of our other centers would be better in that role. Why does he keep getting all this opportunity?

    • smiler2729 says:

DD ain’t all bad, he’s actually pretty good on the PP and on draws… No, man, there is just a malaise about this team and it’s not Bergevin’s team yet, he inherited guys he probably doesn’t want and can’t move (yet).

He asks for patience and I’ve got to give it to him. The only dart against him is the curious hiring of Therrien 2.0, looked good on paper but we’ve all seen this movie.

This is a huge off-season for Bergy but hey, while we’re still in-season, let’s at least makle the playoffs and entertain us troops eh.

PK to Edmonton for Yakupov and Schultz.

  22. habs001 says:

This afternoon was a perfect example of how most of the games played by this team will look…They are just a little above average team..when the team had the winning streak they played about the same as today…..this team is loaded with forwards that are 2 to 16 goal a season players…when the season is over this team will be somewhere in the mid 20 twenties in scoring goals…

    • RockinRey says:

They have been trying to uload what amounts to one complete forward line. Bourque, Briere, and Gio …so its really no secret that they are not entirely happy with the lack of production from the vets. When you factor in the non factor of Paros , and the volatility in the play of Eller, Prust and Moen. That says it all. Add in a susceptible D. The team really is in store for some changes next year.

On another note I think no movement clauses are completely wrong. It complete limits what a team can do. You make your millions part of the job is the uncertainty of the trade market. It is part of the job…..

You are entitled to your opinion even if you are wrong.

    • Old Bald Bird says:

I don’t think this team is above average at all — well maybe when you factor Price in. However, when they give it their all, they can play pretty well. It seems they just can’t play that way consistently. Takes too much out of them?

  23. jols101 says:

Not sure if many are new to the NHL but refs never call penalties in OT. It went both ways, Emelin should have had one and Tampa should have had 2 or 3, but that is life in the NHL. Has been this way for the 30 plus years I’ve been watching.

    • The Jackal says:

      So that makes it ok?
That doesn’t justify the terrible reffing.
And yes, they do call penalties in OT they just try not to.

Another pathetic failure. I don’t know why the Habs insist on playing these afternoon games every year. They play like they’re half-asleep and the games (win or lose) are among the worst in terms of entertainment value that you’ll ever endure.

Oh well, now that the win “streak” is over we can go back to demanding trades and firings again.

    • The Jackal says:

To be honest, while playing in the Finnish elite league, Jokerit is probably the most hated franchise in Finland. The main reason for it, is that they are from Helsinki. But if I should pick up one team that has even a small chance to win a couple of games in a season in KHL, it will be Jokerit. Expecially now, when they are going to have a couple of Russian Oligarks throwing in money to spend.

As you say, it will be interesting indeed – I read that the swedish League are worried that the best players from Norway who Plays in sweden will join Vålerenga. I know that two players came from Vålerenga and said they would like to come home and play in the KHL, but “I belive it when i see it”, as Rosselli-Olsen said.

  47. The Jackal says:

On the bright side, no own goal and we win… no one talks about how Bishop was letting nothing in.

On a less positive note, the stupid freaking zebras blew a bunch of calls in OT just because the Habs started OT with a PP. PK was fouled on that rush were he made all the TB players look like pylons, then Gally gets crosschecked and no calls. Missed a few trips too, total BS reffing as usual. Rules are rules, call the damn infractions.

At least we got a point, we can win tomorrow and keep building up our point streak to 4 games and more.

We played very well in OT but I guess we expended our goal quota against the B’s. No matter, we’ll bounce back tomorrow and it will have been a good week.

Easy target is Gorges, but really, its the forwards not back checking that made Subban cover the point. Still though Gorges watches the puck because he thinks he’s a goaltender. Just take one player out of that sequence and its a non-play.

Mark C, not sure if “can’t be bothered” applies in this case. That he didn’t pick him up is true, no argument. But for myself, I would go through a list of other possible causes — including, was it his man or in fact Gorges’? was he gassed after single-handedly generating more offense in OT than most Habs forwards did in the whole game? — before concluding he didn’t care.
