Liveblog: Game 55 – Canadiens drop matinee 2-1 to TB in OT

Thompson ends it

The Canadiens began Overtime on a power play and carried the play for most of the time.

But with 24 seconds left, Alex Killorn found Nate Thompson alone in front of Carey Price, and the Lightning's 36th shot – and first of OT – found the back of the net.

Briere ties it up

Despite minimal ice time, Daniel Brière has goals in two straight games.

The vetran took a pass from Brian Gionta to beat Ben Bishop.

That was it for scoring as we head to OT.

Full moon tonight?

Weird 20 minutes.

With Tampa Bay shorthanded, Nate Thompson's lob across the face of the Canadiens' goal ticked off P.K. Subban's stick and into the net past Carey Price.

Then there was a brawl during a TV timeout.

Unpleasantness began with Ben Bishop and Brandon Prust jabbing at each other, soon to be joined by George Parros and Radko Gudas, both of whom got misconducts.

Canadiens outshot the Lightning 10-8.

Molson Cup form

Carey Price, Player of the Month for January, is off to a good start in February.

Price made 10 saves and stopped Nikita Kucherov on a penalty shot during 10 minutes dominated by the visitors.

The Canadiens had six shots on Ben Bishop.

Afternoon delight

It's a Super Bowl weekend tradition: Your Montreal Canadiens play a pair of afternoon games at the Bell Centre.

A year ago, in the seventh and eighth games of a lockout-shortened season, the Canadiens swept Super Bowl weekend with a 6-1 romp over Buffalo on Saturday and a 2-1 squeaker against Ottawa on Sunday.

The 2014 opponents are Tampa Bay and Winnipeg, both of which present challenges ... but who doesn't, where the Canadiens are concerned.

Wins against Carolina and Boston gave the Canadiens a 6-6-1 record in January.

The team was 8-5-0 in October, 7-4-3 in November and 8-5-1 in December.

Because of the Olympic break, the Canadiens will play only seven games in February – five at the Bell Centre.

Two previous games against the Lightning this season went to Shootouts and ended with 2-1 final scores. Tampa Bay won at the Bell Centre Nov. 12, and Lars Eller, of all people, secured a Shootout win in Tampa on Dec. 28.

  13. Dulljerk says:

There is something for Subban to learn from, keep it simple and score a goal. Nice coverage on Thompson superstar. Ridiculous.

No eternal reward will forgive us for wasting the dawn.

  14. joeybarrie says:

While we didn’t deserve that game by a long shot.

  22. The Teacher says:

    Really Boone, hotdogging… Smarten up!

  40. RockinRey says:

Hey patches use some of that brute strength you train for in the off season and will the puck into the net!!!!! Get dirty

  41. Mondou6 says:

F-ing refs have been HORRENDOUS. WTF are they doing?

  42. CJ says:

PK is fighting the puck right now. Can’t seem to get the flow going. IMO he is overplaying and likely overthinking his game.

Mark it down, this might be the only such stretch you see in this kid’s career.

Even blue chip stocks don’t always have a perfect linear graph. Our blue chipper is only headed in one direction….Up!

  43. thejackal says:

    Call a penalty you clowns!

  44. Habilis says:

P.K. gets the call after dangling everyone. Man, he wants to atone for that goal.

  45. Captain aHab says:

How many friggin penalties will the refs let TB get away with?

Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.

  46. B says:

Gallagher half the size of Cassie Campbell and the only one who will get dirty!!!

  48. Cdnman1 says:

    How many non calls?

  49. Rudy says:

It would be so unfair for Price to lose this in a shootout

  50. RockinRey says:

    Markov hesitated

  51. Captain aHab says:

Will someone please hit the net?

Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.

  52. danhabsfan says:

Why didn’t they try Briere on tant to instead of DD?

  53. Habbu says:

They look frightened when they have a PP……

  54. Ghosts of the Forum says:

    There it is!! Pinwheel!!!

  55. Sal from the Hammer says:

  56. drail222 says:

    Shoot the GD puck DD!

  57. Captain aHab says:

It’s simple really: PK is fearful of being in the stands in Sochi and is trying to do too much right now

Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.

  58. RockinRey says:

Overplaying pK bc they know dd wont shoot!!!

  59. Storman says:

PK no feel for the game on the ice tonight,,

  60. Habbu says:

    Did they get a shot?

  61. Mondou6 says:

That was the worst 4-on-3 I’ve ever seen.

  62. Forum Dog says:

    Jeezus Davey. Shoot the puck!

  63. RockinRey says:

  64. RockinRey says:

dd had a good look to shoot!!!

  65. Rudy says:

    Surprised MT kept PK on

  66. Dulljerk says:

Watch out for the SH goal.

No eternal reward will forgive us for wasting the dawn.

  67. Fansincebirth says:

Pk – when it was in the late stages of “would he play or not for team Canada”, he’s been a different player. Show boating, taking too many chances…head’s just not in the right space

    • Dulljerk says:

And that is what happens if you just “let him play”. He needs to checked and reminded constantly.

No eternal reward will forgive us for wasting the dawn.

      • Dunboyne Mike says:

Hey Dulljerk. Afraid I have the polar opposite view. Too much talent to suppress with conservative strategy. Although I agree sometimes there’s a cost, the more he’s allowed play his way, the more he will make things happen. The guy’s a winner, a team guy and an outrageous talent. Don’t shackle him.

  68. RH says:

I don’t know what that new goalie coach did to Price but, lock him up for the next twenty years!! Don’t even let other teams have a sniff.

  69. fasdarken says:

Let’s hope the Olympics straighten out PK. Obviously therrien is having issues doing so.

  70. smiley says:

PK makes me nervous. Cole: Paciorelly:)

  71. RockinRey says:

I hate 3 point games! Its completely bush league. Can’t stand it. 2 points for the winner

  72. Habbu says:

Seriously; someone has to ask PK…..what’s wrong?
