Liveblog: Game 53 – Canadiens end losing streak as Price hangs goose egg on Carolina

CelebrationCar

Price stops the bleeding

Carey Price made 36 saves for his first shutout since Dec. 14 as the Canadiens topped Carolina.

Brandon Prust, Brendan Gallagher and Max Pacioretty scored for the Canadiens.

Next stop: Boston.

Uneventful

Carolina had a few chances, but Price stopped them all

The dangerous lead

Max Pacioretty's 22nd made it 3-0.

That was the score New Year's Eve in Carolina.

I'm just sayin'.

Hurricanes outshot the Canadiens 13-11, and Carey Price was brilliant, especially on a glove save on Alexander Semin.

Jeff Skinner and Semin rang shots off the goalpost.

Much-needed good start

The Canadiens needed more than five minutes to get their first shot on Anton Khudobin.

A minute later, Brandon Prust – who registered the SoG – scopred his fifth of the season off a nice pass by Josh Gorges.

Carey Price maintained the lead with brilliant bang-bang stops on Drayson Bowman and Jordan Staal, who broke away during a Canadiens power play.

The indefatigable Brendan Gallagher doubled the lead with his 14th of the season, poking the puck past Khudobin off a goalmouth scrum.

Carolina outshot the Canadiens 13-10.

Will the bleeding stop?

Two teams on four-game streaks meet at the Bell Centre Tuesday night.

Carolina has won four in a row and moved into playoff contention.

After falling behind 2-0 to visiting Columbus less than three minutes into the game Monday night, the Hurricanes rallied with three third-period goals.

The Canadiens have lost four in a row and are clinging precariously to a wild-card playoff spot.

In possibly their worst effort of the season, the Canadiens were smoked 5-0 by Washington at the Bell Centre Saturday night.

The faithful were not amused. Booing began in the second period.

And if Carolina jumps out early Tuesday night ...

Well, it ain't gonna be pretty at the ol' ballyard.

Carolina is playing its third game in four nights and fifth in seven. If the Hurricanes dominate the third period at the Bell Centre, this Canadiens team is worse than we think.

    Guaranteed win tonight.

We have just enough talent to win a game after being written off. We’ll probably win tonight, and against Boston, then lose 5 in a row.

Frustrating and very mediocre team to root for.

Fasten your seatbelts and brace yourselves for a butt-ugly spectacle.

Not sure if anyone else caught, NHL A Season Revealed, last night on Sportsnet. Actually pretty well done. Great to get the behind the scenes look into different organizations.

One thing that struck me while watching the episode, is just how hard these guys work off the ice. If you are not 100% committed, or 100% prepared, you are going to get steamrolled.

Tonight is a pivotal moment in the Canadiens season. There is no doubt that the canes sense blood in the water. Montreal better be ready and willing to match their intensity. I’m thinking tonight is our night. Maybe it’s blind faith, but I’m feeling confident.

  38. adadi says:

I have no idea if Parenteau would have been a good fit. i don’t really know him. However, had the trade gotten Bourque out of our hair i would have been all for it. I’m glad MB didn’t give up any young prospects to get the deal done. Maybe there is hope for him after all.

Not related to Habs otherwise, but the coach at the commercial is Artturi Lehkonen’s dad. Commercial is my local team’s statement for different kind of requirements team needs to fill for raising up to the Finnish elite league. So far, one of the problems, is they don’t have a screen that is big enough. (In Finnish screen/display and requirement are same words)

Text can be translated: Do you need bigger requirements [screen] or is good hockey enough?

i feel bournival and eller need top 6 minutes to be effective. playing them on the 3rd or 4th line is useless. eller gets more involved physically when he is playing more. bournival’s speed and work ethic should be rewarded with top 6 wingers ( which we don’t have ) and top 6 minutes

It appears that the Bourque trade didn’t happen because the Avs wanted thrown in Andrighetto. Of the 20 of so Bulldogs games I’ve watched this year Andrighetto is by far our most offensively gifted player there. Glad that didn’t happen.

  53. Danno says:

That McDonald’s commercial would be a lot funnier if instead of Daniel Briere asking if the Gallagher burger comes with a toy, Briere asks if he can buy a goal. Then the girl would laugh out loud and ask Danny:”Would you like fries with that?”

The boys squeak out a win tonight but still look a little shakey. They bring their “a” game for a hard fought win against the Bruins and with gaining confidence bang off back to back wins this weekend and then everybody enjoys a super bowl and last weeks shite can be forgotten.

Marc Antoine Godin – There are 5 #Habs players listed at 5’9 or under. There are 4 (players) right now in all of the Western Conference (Cammalleri being one of them).

    • Slackman says:

Saw that stat a while back. I think it is no coincidence that 7 of the top ten teams are indeed from the west. When is somebody in the habs brass going to realize that size does, in fact, play a large part in being successful. It might even shut those MOAR BIGGER idiots up.

    • marvin20 says:

the lack of size is the reason why they can not score. They can not get in front of the net, are only able to cycle the puck and shoot from high slot. Every year Montreal management says they are going to build with the philosophy of speed and skill, but if you can not get in front of the net, are dominated along the boards, and have no scoring depth, I am left scratching my head in frustration

    GO HABS GO

    • scotland says:

      i second that.

mb says be patient to the fans. it will take time.

ok..believe us you dont have to beg. we will be patient with young new faces….even if the team loses (losing now as it is, getting embarassed now as it is, got embarassed in the play offs,….so yea lets be patient………but without the vetern stiffs and the bush league lame duck coach. because no matter how good you are way down the road………..you will never get back the respect you are losing now. last saturday was history in the making.

  63. BJ says:

Two questions: 1) Do we win? 2) Does Bourque score?
4-2 Habs and a goal and assist for Bourque.

    • Rad says:

I don’t know if Bourque will score tonight. What I am certain of is that he will be taking the body every chance he gets. Look for at least 4 or 5 solid hits from him tonight.

  64. habsfan0 says:

    Carolina’s 5th game in 7 nights?
    This one’s in the bag.

  65. GGtheHab says:

I get that sometimes you have to flip burgers before you manage McDs, but does a player have to be a winger before he can play center? I am still perplexed by the Eller move..put Bournival back on that wing..

  66. Rad says:

Well, the percentages favor a Habs win tonight. The team is well-rested and desperate for a win. The opponent is fatigued and playing their 2nd game in 2 nights. I expect the home team will pull out a W tonight, but all bets are off against Boston and Tampa Bay coming up next.

  67. GGtheHab says:

I know my confidence level…wonder what it is like in the room…here is a classic example of how our captain does not match up physically with theirs, and their 1-2 punch at center going against DD and DB is comical..I know pleks will draw one of the brothers,,,but what a mismatch against the other..

  68. Ton says:

Wonder if Cam Connor would have been a top 6 on this team! Um

  69. RockinRey says:

@Boone. Heard you on the Fan with McGowan .

And on anther not re the Poll
Parenteau would absolutely be a decent fit if he were healthy. I dont think the Habs could have turned that down if it were one for one.

I’ll be watching as usual but I don’t really care if they win or lose. I will be happy if they win but if they lose it’s one more nail in Therrien’s coffin. Small price to pay.

    • HabsWin-nipeg says:

Agreed. Sadly I am in the same frame of mind – each loss, particularly one sided/passionless losses, bring us one step closer to real changes i.e. trades or Therrien being fired.

    • Habilis says:

I’d agree, if I hadn’t seen so many hockey people saying that MT is safe, at least until the season ends. We could lose 10-0 tonight and MT would still be the coach tomorrow. Even McKenzie said so, said it would look terrible on MB if he did it during the season.

Apparently, that matters more to him than admitting his mistake and moving on. Awesome.

      • HabsWin-nipeg says:

Does Mackenzie have an in with MB? Here in Wpg the GM had personally chosen the coach, but when it became obvious the team was sinking he fired him anyway. I disagree with Mackenzie – if the Habs keep getting smoked, Therrien will be gone.

      • adadi says:

A lot of the talking heads are being politically correct. Remember who their bosses are. Therrien is toast. All that remains is the timing. I’m willing to give MB some slack on that as there are a lot of variables to take into consideration.

    • scotland says:

in same boat. dont care if they win. dont care of they lose.

first time in my ltime as a hab fan (43 years) that i dont care either way.
