Liveblog: Game 52 – Canadiens plumb new depths of suckitude in 5-0 loss, fall behind Leafs in standings

First home game in 11 days and your Montreal Canadiens dialed up a stinker.

No shots on Washington goal until the game was seven minutes old.

Three in the first period.

First shot of the second period almost 13 minutes in – by which time Washington had chased Carey Price with goals by Alexander Ovechkin, John Erskine, Jay Beagle and John Carlson.

Casey Wellman added a fifth in a languid and meaningless third period.

Final shot total was 34-21.

Oh, and Toronto got a point in Winnipeg.

The Leafs have passed the Canadiens in the Atlantic Division standings.

20 minutes of Garbage Time

Casey Wellman completed a 2-on-1 with Alexander Ovechkin for the Capitals' fifth goal.

Brian Gionta took two boarding penalties.

The Canadiens recorded their first shot almost 13 minutes into the second period.

By then, Washington had chased Carey Price with goals by Alexander Ovechkin (his league-leading 36th), John Erskine, Jay Beagle and John Carlson.

The Bell Centre crowd was chanting "On veut un tir!" by the time Daniel Brière finally got one.

Shots in the period: 15-6.

On the game: 27-9.

Horrible spectacle for the home fans.

The hurt continues

It took seven minutes for the Canadiens to get a shot on goal and almost 11 to get a second.

Final shot tally: 12-3 for the visitors.

And Washington will start the second period on a power play, thanks to Lars Eller taking a four-minute high-sticking penalty while the Canadiens were trying to take advantage of a delayed call against Niklas Backstrom.

On the ensuing PP, Troy Brouwer powered a shot past Carey Price, but the green light was on indicating time had expired.

This team is in trouble.

The Futility Bowl

Clash of the Tight 'Uns.

The Washington Capitals have lost seven in a row and sit seventh in the Eastern Conference's Metropolitan Division.

Clinging to third in the Atlantic Division, your Montreal Canadiens ride a three-game losing streak into Saturday's game at the Bell Centre, where fans have not seen their floundering heroes since Jan. 14.

Neither the Canadiens nor Caps are scoring goals, which is surprising in Washington's case, or converting power-play opportunities, which complicates matters for a poor even-strength team like the Habs.

Fearless prediction: One of the teams will win.

Supplementary prediction: Neither Michel Therrien nor Adam Oates is buying green bananas.

Puck drops 7:10ish.

U know its a bad game when your 5.6 players gets two boarding calls

  2. LimestoneHab says:

I am so tired of the coach and his random line combinations. No wonder the players look like they have never played with each other! Most of them haven’t!

  8. habstrinifan says:

I posted a few days ago..players’ meeting. And if we don’t see one it also tells a story.

Most situations like this we would have seen a players’ meeting already. Remember earlier in the season we had two in a short span.

Unless I missed something, there hasn’t been one. I think it’s significant. Also keep any eye if another night where no players are made available for interview.

  10. boing007 says:

I don’t care if they won’t play for Therrien. Tune him out and play the best hockey that you can. Maybe you’ll win that way.

  11. adadi says:

    Gionta has lost his mind.

  12. Reflektor says:

Larry Robinson’s french is probably still really good.

  13. habsfan999 says:

re: Markov. he hasn’t played well the last few games. I believe it is true that he gets tired.

Am I naive to suggest not making him play every effin’ game? Could we not let one of the kids come up from hamilton every now and then to give him some time off? So we would have one of the leagues best defenceman, that he his when he has his legs? Is there some code about this?

  14. Wasn’t the 6-0 LA pasting supposed to be the wake-up call? Now, losing to Washington who lost 7 straight, beat us the same way? Aieee!!!!

    I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…

  15. habsguru says:

5-0 game, yeah bench Eller, that will fix it. Tool

  16. Laramy87 says:

Why am i watching this still and not out boozing

  17. 24more says:

Don’t worry, guys. MB and MT are teaming up to bring Connor McDavid to Montreal!!

  18. expat_habsfan says:

The Habs’ should have conceded the last 4 games right after the pre-game warm up. Still would have been 4 in the lost column but at least the individual plus/minus numbers wouldn’t be so bad and they could have saved some embarrassment. /sarcasm but maybe not?

  19. twilighthours says:

Was Therrien a nightclub bouncer at one point in his life? An honorable profession, no doubt. I’m just curious.

  20. morivera says:

I miss the good old days with Aaron Asham, Peter Popovic and Sjell Dahlin.

  28. CJ says:

Winnipeg, please do me the favor of beating the Leafs. Small consolation prize, but it will help make tomorrow a little less painful.

  29. HabsProf says:

Boone: I take it back. I’m glad to be in California (at least, I’m glad I’m not in the pressbox watching this turkey).

They brought their f____ing toys with them!

  30. frontenac1 says:

    LOL! Erskine just outskated Max!

  31. slapshot777 says:

DD can`t handle the puck with two hands on the stick let alone trying to do it with one.

  32. Grimmly says:

So, lets get this straight, the Habs suck right? Im no coach, but why does this look wrong

  34. slapshot777 says:

All those shots are doing is padding the shot total nothing more.

  35. Captain aHab says:

Gionta not benchedfor his dumb penalty…how strange!

Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.

  36. habsfan999 says:

For what it’s worth, at this point…..

The EGG line started the year on fire, three kids on a rebuilding team that is lighting it up. The coach splits up the line.

Some weeks ago Markov/Subban were being hailed all over as the best defensive tandem in the NHL. The coach splits them up.

Then line juggling to the point where it’s pointless to even try to keep track of who is playing with who. How are players supposed to develop a game like that?

Bourque game after game doing nothing, but getting the ice time. Bournival, one of the young players who is to be part of ‘the future’, sitting on the bench.

Eller not playing center since….when? Briere, who got dumped for a reason by Philly, logging the minutes, doing nothing, for why?

Now it looks like the players are not liking each other. When that happens, it is a lack of leadership from the boss (coach). I don’t coach, but I have employees. When shit falls apart, it is my fault.

When someone does what Gorges does in the pre-game clip it creates resentment. If the coach was a good leader, that b.s. would not be happening.

Just when Pirce was really coming into form, starting to make the highlight reel saves on top of his good positional play…..things fall apart.

    It’s broken. It’s time.

  37. Storman says:

Where is the six goal line in hockey when you need one

  38. slapshot777 says:

I can play goal on those shots.

  39. Habbu says:

Can’t give a pass; can’t take a pass………….but I still get my millions for putting on the uniform………

  40. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

Is Mavid around? If yes, she can take over on the live blogging thing, and you can go home Boone. We totally understand. You’re not paid to be tortured.

  41. slapshot777 says:

I feel for Price who has had to endure all this crap

  42. habs001 says:

    Bourque minus 3 tonight..Eller minus 11 for the season…

  43. morivera says:

Tomorrow, the cast of “The Brady Bunch” TV will play against the habs. Another loss is inevitable,

  44. Reflektor says:

    Someone call Larry Robinson.

  45. Habitant in Surrey says:

…if everyone of Our Players were as good as Plekanec We would win another Stanley Cup

  46. Storman says:

Extend Briere, now dont want to take a chance at losing him to some fat belly drinking fan

  47. expat_habsfan says:

I wonder if Senator Molson’s ghost is going to pay a visit to Geoff later to night and tell him to “fix it” it or sell his seats because it’s too embarrassing for even a ghost to watch.

  48. Plekasuares says:

Ya Pleky is moving his feet at least

  49. Storman says:

MB the 1970’s Habs just called and threw up in the phone

  50. 25Stanleycups says:

Come on this is funny right. Players, for most part don’t care, why should we. I mean they’ll drive home in they’re 75,000$ cars, to their million dollar homes, and condos. And enjoy a life free of any financial burdens. What incentive do they have to really care.

  51. twilighthours says:

    Cheap hit, not very captainly.

I’m not really a fan of Gionta.

  52. wild flower says: first coaching requirement would be to find one with a vocabulary that doesn’t require an f# every sentence. After viewing a few of the 24 hr NHL team reality tv shows, I’ve concluded that these are tough to find. Most of these coaching seem to insult the intelligence of their players, which at some point must result in disrespect.

  53. Habs4LifeInTO says:

Going to watch a little Raptors…sorry to say. Ross about to break a team record….

    24 cups and counting….

  54. twilighthours says:

    Eller is benched, I presume.

    That makes little sense.

  55. Storman says:

Why are the fans not booing this effort to the high heavens, sarcastically should start sing na na goodbye song,, imagine shelling out the amount you have to overpay for a family of four evening at the Bell Center for this shiza

  56. slapshot777 says:

MB says patience, well patience is gonna get him fired.

  57. thebonscott says:

What game u watching Boone we got one????

C’mon guys this is not rocket surgery!!!!

  58. CalgaryHab says:

    Budaj looked weak there….

  59. habcertain says:

    Boone has fallen asleep, 5-1

  60. slapshot777 says:

Hockey 101 which is as basic as basic can get. Shoot the puck and go to the net. That was the first thing you learn after you learn how to skate. Yet somehow the Habs have forgotten this and apparently so has all the coaches.

  61. dallyd says:

How many mailed in efforts, how many blowouts ( and how many in 2 weeks) and how many head scratching decisions are needed before MB realizes MT has to go.
At this point, I am actually questioning his decision making as much as MT’s.

  62. duffy says:

And these guys get paid MILLIONS to put a show on like this ! ROBBERY ,

  63. Plekasuares says:

5-1!! Whoo!! When did we score boone

  64. Laramy87 says:

So in a game like this complaining about refs is a non-issue. But why did Gionta get one there and when Ovie hit Murray from behind into the boards and created a 3-1 there was nothing. I mean you gotta call a game fairly regardless

  65. Haberoooo13 says:

    Scotchy, scotch, scotch…

    Lafleur coming out rather gingerly…

  66. Propwash says:

Budaj vs Holtby in a fight. Who do you think would win?

  67. Captain aHab says:

Gionta showing his leadership by taking a stupid penalty.

Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.

  68. Cdnman1 says:

    Boone 5-1?

  69. Plekasuares says:

5-1! Boone gave us a goal!

  70. Reflektor says:

Boone, who scored for the Habs. 5-1?

  71. Habilis says:

This is nuts. You just KNOW when the Caps are going to score. We haven’t been this bad defensively since the dark season.

  72. adadi says:

Are you allowed to throw in the towel in hockey. If so we should.

  73. frontenac1 says:

They’re cheering the Caps Goals now!

  74. Storman says:

Ole Ole Ole Ole we just need an Erat goal to put a cherry on top of this..
