Liveblog: Game 52 – Canadiens plumb new depths of suckitude in 5-0 loss, fall behind Leafs in standings

First home game in 11 days and your Montreal Canadiens dialed up a stinker.

No shots on Washington goal until the game was seven minutes old.

Three in the first period.

First shot of the second period almost 13 minutes in – by which time Washington had chased Carey Price with goals by Alexander Ovechkin, John Erskine, Jay Beagle and John Carlson.

Casey Wellman added a fifth in a languid and meaningless third period.

Final shot total was 34-21.

Oh, and Toronto got a point in Winnipeg.

The Leafs have passed the Canadiens in the Atlantic Division standings.

20 minutes of Garbage Time

Casey Wellman completed a 2-on-1 with Alexander Ovechkin for the Capitals' fifth goal.

Brian Gionta took two boarding penalties.

The Canadiens recorded their first shot almost 13 minutes into the second period.

By then, Washington had chased Carey Price with goals by Alexander Ovechkin (his league-leading 36th), John Erskine, Jay Beagle and John Carlson.

The Bell Centre crowd was chanting "On veut un tir!" by the time Daniel Brière finally got one.

Shots in the period: 15-6.

On the game: 27-9.

Horrible spectacle for the home fans.

The hurt continues

It took seven minutes for the Canadiens to get a shot on goal and almost 11 to get a second.

Final shot tally: 12-3 for the visitors.

And Washington will start the second period on a power play, thanks to Lars Eller taking a four-minute high-sticking penalty while the Canadiens were trying to take advantage of a delayed call against Niklas Backstrom.

On the ensuing PP, Troy Brouwer powered a shot past Carey Price, but the green light was on indicating time had expired.

This team is in trouble.

The Futility Bowl

Clash of the Tight 'Uns.

The Washington Capitals have lost seven in a row and sit seventh in the Eastern Conference's Metropolitan Division.

Clinging to third in the Atlantic Division, your Montreal Canadiens ride a three-game losing streak into Saturday's game at the Bell Centre, where fans have not seen their floundering heroes since Jan. 14.

Neither the Canadiens nor Caps are scoring goals, which is surprising in Washington's case, or converting power-play opportunities, which complicates matters for a poor even-strength team like the Habs.

Fearless prediction: One of the teams will win.

Supplementary prediction: Neither Michel Therrien nor Adam Oates is buying green bananas.

Puck drops 7:10ish.

How old is Gene Simmons ? 60, 65 ? Even the make up couldn’t hide the wrinkles.

    …Boucher or Crawford ?

no more retreads por favor…but gotta go with Craw’s hair

        • dr. gesundheit says:

While coaching is probably part of the problem…simply firing the coach is a cosmetic change which does little to resolve the real issues with this team. It doesn’t matter who you bring in as coach, if that is the only change you make, the result will be no more than temporary/short term. As was the case with Gauthier/Martin, the coach can only do so much with the mess of a team that he has to work with.

          • Habitant in Surrey says:

…I believe a good Coach can do better with what We have

…I think the talent base must up-size qualitatively, but so does the coaching

…but over a month of this kind of play out of what We have says there is a problem with the Coach losing the ear of His Players

…that is almost impossible to turn around

  4. Adidess says:

Apparently, Guy Boucher isn’t out walking his dog tonight, like he normally does.

Trying to guess why: could his dog be feeling sick?

  5. habstrinifan says:

Listen to TSN690 MT telling Price to leave room cause he WANTS TO BERATE REST OF TEAM FOR LETTING PRICE DOWN.

Is that coaching you can agree with.

  6. Willy the bum says:

Somehow I am very curious to see next week’s episode of 24CH; I heard there’s a plotline where the Habs are damaged goods in a 5-0 loss.

  7. Trackpants says:

Yeah, I don’t like the leafs, but which team battled back tonight from a 3 goal defict tonight, and which team rolled over and took it again…. The habs just haven’t sucked since Christmas they managed to suck and blow at the same time.

  8. The Jackal says:

After tonight, and the team’s excretal performances of late, I’d be down for a coaching change.
However, I don’t believe that will make a big impact in the W/L column.
This team needs to let go of it’s deadweight players and bring in some new blood, a combination of new acquisitions and young prospects to test them out.
Everyone knows the shtick anyway – bigger, younger, tougher, and more goals.

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  9. ProHabs says:

Is it possible that when Therrien basically said I’m giving up against Philly when he benched PK and didn’t bother pulling the goalie that the players have since said “you gave up on us, now we are giving up on you”

  10. HardHabits says:

  11. StevieM61 says:

Gene Simmons would have scored a goal tonight…against us

    Bullet holes in my mirrors . . . .

  12. ooder says:

so i read on twitter that glenn healey took a shot at Joey Moss, the oiler’s stick boy who has a learning disability?
    anybody catch what he said?
either way, taking a shot at the stick boy is beyond pathetic

I’m no coach, but, wow, it sure looks like MT has lost the team, OR, the habs are really that crappy. One or the other!

    CH = Les Glorieux!!!

  16. WindsorHab-10 says:

    I want MT canned tonight.

  17. JohnBellyful says:

Wonder if the players have thought of changing stick manufacturers? The ones they’re using now are duds.

  18. expat_habsfan says:

Ruel was a better coach and he had a game where the Habs gave up 5 empty net goals.

    • JohnBellyful says:

Now, Ex, you know the younguns will want to know why: Last game of the season and the last playoff berth came down to goals for, after it became apparent the team wasn’t going to win.

      • expat_habsfan says:

now they don’t have to learn anything about why us ‘old guns’ are so bleeping furious with this team and even the last 10-15 years. We know what a really good team is supposed to look like and all we’ve had are imposters.

  19. habstrinifan says:

TSN690 saying something big could happen… somebody big could be leaving town.

  20. durocher says:

MB should turn the Habs into sellers ASAP. Might as well get some prospects and picks to be a competitive team one day.

If we can get Gorges and a 1st (Pacioretty) for Rivet, and Bournival for O’Byrne, surely we can get some value for our vets (e.g., Gio, Gorges, Markov, Briere, Bourque, Moen).

The only untouchables should be Price, Gally, and Chucky.

  21. Habitant in Surrey says:

…Our Team needs effort to win

…talent, what little We have, is not enough

…this is the result of not caring

…how it happened (because We have seen good inspirational hockey from Our Team earlier this season) I don’t know for sure …but They have stopped caring

  22. Propwash says:

They haven’t let the press in the room. I guess Gorges is tear in them a new one.

  23. Cdnman1 says:

Don Cherry takes some shots. Notice he never talk about the Habs when they win. Piece of crap.

  24. habstrinifan says:

Media still not let in to room… longer than normal.

  25. Habilis says:

    Check it out:
@engelheather: Nine minutes since game ended. #Habs doors yet to open.

Maybe Bergevin’s in there telling the players that MT is clearing out his stuff. Probably not though. Sigh.

  26. The Capitalist Pig says:

This team is a flat-out embarrassment.

  27. expat_habsfan says:

Ruel was a better coach than this and he coached a game where the Habs gave up 5 empty net goals.

  28. Ron says:

The farm boys won 6-2. At least they had some guts

  29. 1010 says:

Ron and Don are loving it. Ron, who I hate worse than any sports personality on tv, is absolutely beside himself with joy.

  30. ooder says:

    Why is holtby sweaty lol

  31. twilighthours says:

Stop worrying about the Leafs, boys. We’ve got too many of our own issues.

  32. Habitant in Surrey says:

    …WHOA !!! …that was SICK !

    …literally 🙁

  33. GL says:

Wow! What a power house team we have. 18 players couldn’t score 1-goal. Good they belong down in the bottom half of the eastern conference. Would be a joke for them to make the playoffs. Probably score 4-goals in 4-games.

  34. Storman says:

Equipment staff given the night off, no need to wash uniforms, although they have to pick up many scrunched up rolls of tape from players removing from there socks and missing the garbage can wide on all there used tape tosses.

  35. habs001 says:

As all bad teams will go on a streak eventually…a coaching change may also do that….But this roster is very average..The forward line up is one of the worst in the league…The majority of the forwards would be at best 3rd line forwards on cup contending teams..and many of the forwards would not even make these teams…A lot of posters as so bad at evaluating talent when that talent wears a Habs jersey..C and C+ type players are looked as B and B+ if only they were used properly…

  36. Mattyleg says:

    Boy, not an easy phase.
I’m just happy that it’s happening now rather than in March.
We can hopefully iron out the problems, and get ourselves back in a good head-space sooner rather than later.

  37. Dr.Rex says:

I feel like I was mugged after watching that game. ANd I was watching it at work.

Can imagine how fans feel who paid hundreds of dollars for that pathetic display.

  38. HabsFansince49 says:

What the hell is Bergevin waiting for? Patience be damned. Perhaps Molson needs to step in and fire the whole lot of this motley crew, GM included.

  39. Thomas Le Fan says:

The Leafs will pass us in the standings. This was an important game and in the 56 or so years that I’ve followed this team perhaps the worst effort I’ve ever witnessed. Pathetic is a compliment.

Hockey isn’t everything … it’s the only thing … except for beer and guitars!

  42. Still Saturday night. Goin’ out for a cocktail and some laughs. Feel bad for the sellout crowd for paying’. Trini. Turn it off now and hug someone. Night all!

    I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…

  43. twilighthours says:

    it’s entirely possible.

  44. Trackpants says:

And with that performance the leafs move ahead of us in the standings… The only question that remains is 1 point or 2?

  46. expat_habsfan says:

Can we play running time for the rest of the season, mercy rule?

  47. dallyd says:

Leafs in OT guaranteed at least one point. Now move ahead of the Habs.

  48. theflower says:

Well with the Habs getting pasted again and the Laffs forcing OT we are now in the 7th position in the east. Beauty!

  49. danhabsfan says:

TO is making my night even worse… Crap

  50. dallyd says:

The Caps can’t win in 7 games, yet they make the Habs look like a pee-wee team.

  51. chfan4life says:

Dump and chase is creating 0 chances. Teams defend this with relative ease. MT, what do U have to counter with?

  52. boing007 says:

Caps are all smiles. That was easy!

  53. 25Stanleycups says:

Price`s confidence should be in fine form when the Olympics start in 2 weeks. Fearless prediction, if CANADA puts there eggs in that basket expect a early exit. Not because Price is bad, but like going into the first round against Ottawa last year, he wasnt mentally prepared, this would be the same thing.

  54. Sportfan says:

This team can win and play with the big boys the Chicago game proved it, but now its time for a change.

Sports and Entertainment in the link click and enjoy, clicking is fun!

    • Adidess says:

The Chicago game was an aberration. There’s a reason why we have only seen that level of play in a handful of games. This team is slightly better than what we’re seeing right now, but not even close to what we saw in that Chicago game.

  55. morivera says:

(Therrien) well, we had over 20 shots, we had our chances, I like our effort tonight, we’re building upon the effort in the Detroit game. Things are looking great.

  56. Storman says:

erskine just got shot by a sniper

  57. duffy says:

To all players who have not scored a goal this year, play Montreal and you will be guaranteed results !!!!!

  58. Storman says:

Interim Gallant and find the right coach

  59. Adidess says:

Tied game in Winnipeg. If Toronto wins tonight, I guarantee MT is sacked tomorrow. You hear it here first.

  61. frontenac1 says:

    Pull the Goalie Mike!

  62. habsgod says:

please, please geoff molson grow a pair and step in and do something order bergevin to make a deal or fire him! this is pathetic he’s sitting there doing nothing ….he’s got gainey and gauthier sydrome …we need a shake up in the worst way

  63. Plekasuares says:

  64. L Elle says:

  65. Cdnman1 says:

Leafs ahead of the habs in points. Where is the panic button.?

  66. habsguru says:

and now we are behind the leafs in the standings.

  67. twilighthours says:

Good call on Lyle Odelein. He would have fired the puck into the Caps’ bench by now.

    • dr. gesundheit says:

Odie embodied everything the Habs don’t have and desperately need. (and yes besides being able to fight very well, sticking up for mates, tough as nails…he could help on the score board as well). He wasn’t fancy…but played a simple game.

A Saskatchewan Farm Boy who was a total Hab…Boneheaded Hab mgmnt response (after the 93 cup) was to trade him(while he was just entering his prime…for some inexplicable reason they never seemed to appreciate those traits)

  68. 1010 says:

TO tries it up. This is the team everyone has made fun of all year. We are fading fast.

    • 1010 says:

      Or ties it at least.

    • twilighthours says:

      Good for the Leafs!

    • The Jackal says:

Please, get off the damn ledge.
Leafs are worse than the Habs in every stat except goals for.
Habs are falling fast but this is the Leafs second loss in a row, not to mention they have played more games than us and lost more games than us.

Yes, the Habs are sucking lately, but it is so freaking stupid to compare them to another crap team and then panic.
That’s no one in the hockey world ever listens to fans.
What Hickey said about the commentary is 100% true.

      Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  69. Adidess says:

Your Captain is trying to tell you something MB. Are you following?

  70. Habbu says:

Gionta sending a message to his teammates……..”I’m stupid!”

  71. Cdnman1 says:

    Time to throw jerseys?

  72. munch17 says:

    Dear Mr. Molson
I left after the second period.
Not because we were losing – because we were being embarrassed.
I have never heard an ovation like that for a harmless shot – our 4th – more than halfway through the game. It’s humiliating.
    This team is unwatchable.

  73. CalgaryHab says:

    We’re a bunch of hacks

  74. chfan4life says:

Putting on a Habs jersey use to mean something…..I guess no more.
