Liveblog: Game 50 – Penguins chase Price, rout Canadiens 5-1

Briefly a game

After 20 minutes, the Penguins led 2-1 and it was a hockey game.

Then it wasn't.

Three unanswered goals in the second period chased Carey Price and sealed the deal.

The Penguins got two goals from Jussi Jokinen and singles by Sidney Crosby, Taylor Pyatt and the dominant Evgeni Malkin.

Fresh from his penance in the pressbox, Rene Bourque scored for the Canadiens.

Carey Price was beaten five times on 21 shots.

Peter Budaj stopped all 10 he faced.

The Canadiens had 24 shots on Marc-André Fleury

20 minutes of Garbage Time

At least we were spared a goalie fight.

Price chased

Carey Price was done 15 minutes into the period, after Evgeni Malkin breezed past Andrei Markov and tucked in Pittsburgh's fifth goal.

Jussi Jokinene and Sisney Crosby – on exquisite power-play passing – also scored for the home team.

Price surrendered five goals on 21 shots.

Pittsburgh had a 14-7 shot advantage.

Bourque bounces back

Exiled to the pressbox for a game, Rene Bourque played a strong first period and tapped home a Daniel Briere pass to reduce the Penguins' lead to one goal.

Bourque's first road POINT of the season required a video review.

Jussi Jokinen had opened the scoring after Evgeni Malkin skated past Andrei Markov and set up his linemate for an easy one.

The Penguins made it 2-0 when Taylor Pyatt, parked on the lip on Carey Price's crease, redirected a power-play point shot by Matt Niskanen.

Shots were 9-7 for the home team.

The Canadiens will begin the second period on a power play.

Angry Penguins

Sounds like a disaster movie, set in Antarctica.

This one, however, will unfold at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, where the Penguin's are still smarting from a 5-1 thumping at the unlikely hands of  Florida Monday night.

The loss snapped a franchise-record home-ice winning streak that had hit 13 games before the Panthers hit town.

Sidney Crosby and friends will be looking to revive their winning ways against a Canadiens team that is playing .500 hockey and is tied, at 59 points, with the surging Leafs, who won their sixth straight in Colorado Tuesday night.

Two first-round draft choices – Louis Leblanc (18th overall in 2009) and Nathan Beaulieu (17th in 2011) – are expected to be in the Canadiens' lineup. Alexei Emelin and Raphael Diaz are healthy scratches.

I am so f**king tired watching this team play crappy hockey for the past 20 years. You would think that we would have hired somebody in management to properly run this team the right way yet all we do is a death spiral toward the black hole.

    • smiler2729 says:

This isn’t a fantasy league, it takes time to move “bad” players because of contracts and agents and bullshit.

And it takes good players to trade for good players.

Fucking Leaf fans are gonna ride me tomorrow, man, I wish Montreal could be a solid team

      Jack Edwards is a clam.
      Gary Bettman is a bobblehead.
The “CH” in CHOKE stands for Toronto Maple Leafs.

    • boing007 says:

Getting perilously close to the event horizon. Spaghetti time.

  2. twilighthours says:

Just got in. The score is ugly.

Did the 5-1 flatter us? Or was it close than that?

  3. Mattyleg says:

    Ah, good ol’ Penguins.

Nothing like the soundness of a business plan that involves finishing last numerous times and almost losing your franchise.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

    • slapshot777 says:

So true, yet listening to TSN you and numerous others you would think they had some brilliant plan and a cunning GM who made shrewd deals to put this team over the top.

    • Mondou6 says:

I swear that once Crosby is gone, and these clowns don’t cheat to land the next ringer, the Penguin franchise is going bankrupt for real, and I’m going to celebrate when it happens.

  4. slapshot777 says:

If MB wants to put a stamp on this team he better have a game plan , or is this it what we are seeing.

  5. ffenliv says:

Anyone remember when this team had a stretch of earning 19 points out of 20 games?

Ya, neither do I. I didn’t think then they were as good as that, but I didn’t think they’d be this bad, either.

    • SlovakHab says:

Over that stretch, Price was unbelievable and our shooting % was pretty high.
      And the team was healthy.

Plenty of analysts predicted we will crashing down based on our play. I’m not surprised at all that this is happening. Price can’t sustain 0.945 SV% and Pacioretty can’t score on 25% of his shots…

  6. jmac21 says:

DD still playing with his flu
    What a leader lol
That shows the coaches thinking play your little boy even if he’s sick
Joke coach and DD is a joke too
    He’s nothing without Gally

  7. ths says:

My RDS stream just got switched to Eugenie. I’m not complaining
Women’s tennis is better viewing than the Habs

Ooh Aah Habs on the war path

  8. sCOTT1243 says:

They should stand at centre after this game and raise their sticks thanking Pittsburgh for such as easy game.

  9. Mondou6 says:

According to NHL logic, goalies need to be able to fight each other, so they can police themselves. After each goal, both netminders should square off at center ice. It will be the new “code”.

  10. mrhabby says:

Pitt not that great…Iam certain a western team would check and pound them hard.

  11. duffy says:

Would Budaj have gotten a shut out if he was in the whole Game, Just asking !!!

  12. Habbu says:

Starting to lose interest in this team……I think most of the players feel the same way I do

  13. topher5468 says:

I haven’t heard that in a while, Cuthbert, TSN, ” Markov got there first”

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  14. slapshot777 says:

Hey Johnson STFU the only reason Fleury was smiling was because the referee had hi and he knew he didn’t have to fight. I say he probably has to change his underwear after the game.

  15. Trackpants says:

I am watching the warm up in tennis then this team… Can’t see what the clown parade does next, you might move Max, but I don’t know you’ll get what we want for him.

  16. morivera says:

MT preparing a list of shooters in the shootout in case Habs score 4 in the next 2 minutes

  17. tab says:

Team has went downhill since galchenyuk got injured. No one realized how valuable he was. Make him a centre please when he returns and 5 minutes more ice time arch him GO!

  18. L Elle says:

A goalie fight would’ve made this game worth the suffering through.

    Loved Buds’ swag. lol

  19. Keith says:

Go down with some fight at least boys!

  20. morivera says:

    MT should bench himself.

  21. slapshot777 says:

Hopefully this brings the guys a little more closer and makes them play. Sometimes something like this will turn a team into a positive more than a negative.

  22. bender69 says:

    good nite all

  23. Slackman says:

hurt em! Might as well at this point.

  24. jols101 says:

That goalie fight would have been the only entertaining thing any Hab did all night. F’n refs, ruin all the fun…

  25. port elgin says:

Contrary to what Boone says…this is not embarrassing.

The score is embarrassing. Lack of heart is embarrassing.

Sliding down the division standings while T.O moves up is embarrassing.

    Open your eyes Bergevin.

  26. duffy says:

Please somebody, knock Crosby into next week .

  27. Mondou6 says:

This is typical Penguins. They only get brave in games like this. The rest of the time it’s whining and crying.

  28. Keith says:

That was a late hit on Gallagher! I’m glade they got pissed off about it, but as usual the refs let that go.

  29. CalgaryHab says:

I’m more embarrassed by their play Boone.

  30. slapshot777 says:

    Boone your embarassing

  31. habs-fan-84 says:

At least they’re making it entertaining.

  32. slapshot777 says:

If the Habs would have kept their top PP players on with the score the way it is, everyone would be calling for their heads. The Pens do it and they have a God given right it seems.

  33. Mavid says:

Would have been interesting to see a what Budaj could have done..

    Weed Wacker Grandma Smurf

  34. Plekasuares says:

Not embarrassing. What do you want them to do Boone hide in a corner and cry (maybe they did that before the game)

  35. mrhabby says:

    Hot cheerleaders.

  36. WAR72 says:

Are budaj and fleury actually pissed at each other? Or is it a show?
Or are they following their teammates lead? Hiw do goalies decide to go at it with each other? I am not a fan of fighting generally but budaj vs. fleury would have been the only thing worth the price of admission, for me.

    • Mondou6 says:

They were standing around, and Budaj gestured at Fleury from 200 feet away, like, “Let’s go.” So Fleury dropped his gloves. Budaj “started it”, as much as you can pick a fight from a different area code. The whole thing is moronic, but typical of NHL lunacy.

  37. Eddie says:

Orpik ran Gallagher into the boards 2 or 3 seconds after Gallagher had gotten rid of the puck. It was a big hit and very late. No call of course.

  38. port elgin says:

Finally signs of life, maybe the team is actually pissed?

    That would be nice.

  39. slapshot777 says:

Would have loved to see Budaj clean Fleury clock. I dislike him and the Pens so much it’s not funny

  40. Slackman says:

oh come on a goalie fight had potential to be very interesting!!

  41. vic says:

This team is a few players working and the rest watchiing.
Saying plekanic is a great player is beyond me,the guy has his
stick out waving and floats between blue lines.
What has happened to the checking, passing skating and the defence.

  42. tab says:

They should have shown this intensity in the 2nd period

  43. slapshot777 says:

Why does Fluerey get to stay and Budaj get tossed. Referees help the Pens again.

  44. Eddie says:

It’s because of Orpik’s hit on Gallagher on the previous play.

  45. Mondou6 says:

    NHL, classy league.

  46. Habbu says:

Good point by Nilan……..why not open it up? Oh no that would be getting away from our game and leading to bad habits… this style of play has worked for the last. 6 weeks

  47. The Capitalist Pig says:

These guys are a woeful excuse for an NHL franchise!

  48. CalgaryHab says:

When Gainey hired JM it was absolute worst coach for the type of team he acquired and built. MB has done the same thing with MT – our youth and future are being demoralized.

  49. tab says:

End of guaranteed contracts would increase effort level 50%.
Just look at veterans with large long term contracts their play is no where close to what it was earlier in their career, with few exceptions

  50. adadi says:

Note to MB. In case you have not figured it out, it is time to tank the season. This team is done. Get rid of who you can and bring up the kids. Give your team a chance for a good draft choice. Really not that hard, but I doubt you can handle it given your track record so far.

  51. habkin says:

If the Habs continue this play, by the end of the week, I would believe there will be a couple of trades! Pittsburgh has a solid team. This is a team that could make life miserable for any of the west teams.

  52. durocher says:

The DD line has been generating chances all night — they are the only offensive threat we’ve had tonight. Too many passengers otherwise (Gio, Briere, etc.)

  53. port elgin says:

    “We are a grinding team”……really M.T. Really?

“We are a joke of a team”..okay now you’re talking

  54. nek25plus says:

So, if bulldogs are worthless…why bring them up? Why is Bournival still here? You have to try your youth, and give them a true chance. All other clubs do?

    • slapshot777 says:

If our youth are good like Timmins and MB have been saying then you got to try them. They have had a few years in the AHL. Let them spread their wings and grow

  55. boing007 says:

Claude Noel’s available. Does he sprechen ze français?

    Richard R

  56. slapshot777 says:

MT doesn’t have anything new to contribute. It’s the only way he knows how to coach and that is very boring and no chance to win hockey

  57. topher5468 says:

HaHa, Tennis is the hot topic on the Habs live game blog, says it all, eh boys

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  58. adadi says:

    Finally, Nilan criticizes MT.

  59. yeg hab fan says:

upcoming tennis has to be better than this

  60. port elgin says:

    one word about this game……garbage

  61. Trackpants says:

I like Budja, unlike the other bums on this team he does his job.

  62. Samovich says:

Hey Boone, are you live-blogging the Tennis?

  63. Eddie says:

If you guys think they’re booing Subban because he’s a great player you need to wake up and smell the racism.

  64. Dulljerk says:

Everybody keeps talking about the Bulldogs like they have solutions. They don’t.

No eternal reward will forgive us for wasting the dawn.

  65. Mavid says:

    4 goals in 6 minutes..not impossible

    Weed Wacker Grandma Smurf

  66. Mavid says:

    Elmer Lach is 96

    Weed Wacker Grandma Smurf

  67. nek25plus says:

What is the point of bring up bulldog players? So they can watch a game? If I was dogs coach, I’d say “no” next time. “They don’t play and come back depressed”!

  68. Mondou6 says:

This franchise is so frustrating. Commitment to mediocrity. Year after year. We should schedule parades for making the playoffs.

  69. Habbu says:

Let’s see………what hasn’t been used yet?…… How about?…”rust crept into our game with having that extra day off”….

  70. otisfxu says:

    Louie Leblanc!!!! Really???? A waste of time folks,,,a waste of time;

  71. slyCH says:

Well that’s it, I’m out. My last post was somehow lost in the HIO’stosphere so I hope this makes it through… There you go Boone, I hope you’re happy. Now keep rooting for the opposition, throwing flowers their way and manure where you eat.

  72. habsfan999 says:

I’ve stopped watching, someone let me know if we score four goals.

There were times we were playing with them well, giving them a fair bit of trouble.

I’ll jump on the bandwagon, well I’ve been on the bandwagon for some time now – they look like a team that is not being coached.

  73. cmc says:

    .. No Pass Patches ?!?

  74. Frank2468 says:

Maybe their out of gas again??? After all gas is $1.30 a Liter in some places. But the Olympics is around the corner so 2 weeks rest all will be good. Ya right with 8 players going to Sochi the ship will go down fast. What do the Habs and the Titanic have in common??? They both looked good before they hit the ice!!!
