Liveblog: Game 5 – Senators end Canadiens season

PK

Senators close out Canadiens with 6-1 romp

Well, it was close for a while.

P.K. Subban's power-pplay goal trimmed Ottawa's early lead to 2-1.

Then the roof caved in.

Kyle Turris scored a shorthanded goal in the second period to begin a run of four unanswered Ottawa goals.

Daniel F. Alfredsson and Cory Conacher scored on power-plays, and Eric Condra got the sixth.

By then, many fans had left the Bell Centre.

The ones who stayed gave the Canadiens a well-deserved ovation as they stoff at centre ice, waving their sticks.

Miracle on Mountain St.?

No Carey Price.

No Brian Gionta.

No Brandon Prust.

No Lars Eller.

No Ryan White.

No hope?

Your bruised and battered Montreal Canadiens face elimination Thursday night at the Bell Centre.

To the undoubted delight of Gary Bettman, four big-market American teams – the Rangers, Islanders, Blackhawks and Kings – are still very much alive in pursuit of the Stanley Cup.

But if Ottawa wins – and you have to like their chances – the Canadiens will join the Canucks and, imminently, the Leafs as Canadian teams unable to survive the first round of the postseason.

Can the Canadiens stay alive?

It may come down to the heroics of a Slovakian goaltender – which is not unprecedented in the annals of Montreal hockey.

Can Peter Budaj channel the playoff brilliance of Jaroslav Halak?

Puck drops 7:10ish. Check back later for live game blogging.

Mike Boone: You and the rest of the media should call this team what it is. They are frauds. They caught a lot of teams napping and racked up the points and you morons drank the kool-aid. This team has NO GOALTENDING. For f–ks sake PRICE IS A BUST; the Habs wasted a 5th overall pick. (Ray Martiniuk was also a 5th overall pick by the Habs in 1970). They could have had Kopitar, Marc Staal, Hanzal, Skille etc. Anderson was drafted 77th overall. You don’t waste high 1st round picks on goalies. He is no thoroughbred, He is S-H-I-T and none of you guys has the courage to call it. This team will take a decade to recover from Gainey’s f–kups. Get rid of Timmins and the entire scouting staff. If Diaz and Kostitsyn and Weber and Price and Leblanc, Bennett and Beaulieu etc. are the kind of talent he reccomends then he should have been fired long ago. That Beaulieu kid is a bust. He doesn’t process fast enough the way Subban did. Who the f–k authorized that fat contract for Gorges? This team has no astute mgmt. and you butt-kissing scribes just play along in order to stay on their good sides. Bouillon…REALLY? Watch the St.Louis-Kings series and you can see what real playoff teams look like.

you are a moron, plain and simple!

Price is S-H-I-T if he keeps costing us playoff first round series. That is the history of Price. Good when it doesn’t count and the pressure if off, sucks big time when the pressure is, and he showed his true colors the first time he played in the NHL All Star game before the other lockout, when as a rookie he deflated and has remained that way since, sure he was a great Bulldogs goalie! But as a habs goalie he has all but let us down. Price was used as a base to rebuild on the premise that you only need small fast players who can outscore while Price was supposed to keep the score down to one goal against.

Until Price proves it by actually winning when it counts, he is S-H-I-T and he should be benched as a backup goalie until he matures or gets traded for value.

2shoes, You are ignorant about hockey. I don’t know your age or your intellect (IQ) but I suspect the number for both would be the same. Watch the Kings and Blues play. As long as there are fans like you to believe the ‘truths’ that mgmt. feeds you about the talent level of the Habs and the thoroughbred status of Price and Beaulieu then they will continue to ruin the team. Some truths are just lies told to idiots. Don’t get personal unless you can be witty.

Look on the bright side… Pittsburg wasted a number one pick on Fleury.

      • hab fan in leaf jungle says:

Yes, but he WON A CUP. Goalies are the MOST important part of a Cup-winning team. IMO the pick was not a waste because everyone got a Cup ring. That is the most important thing in pro hockey.

wow, the montreal canadies are really a big pile of sh*t. I wonder how many of the fans that jumped on the bandwagon as little kids have left the team since. Disappointing fans year after year. Glad i’m not a fan of the habs. the Bruins will always be better team than your team full of nancy boys. We just have a stronger game plan overall. Maybe the Canadiens should create a new league where fighting isn’t allowed and diving is encouraged. They would fit in perfectly. The Refs aren’t so good when you are playing another Canadian teams, huh? Better luck next year LOSERS!

Just want to thank the team for playing their hearts out and taking us on a great ride this season and really looking forward to what is to come with the great young core we have (Subban, Price, Gally, Chucky, Eller, Prust, Emelin, Tinordi) and the prospects coming up (Bournival, Kristo, Beaulieu, Leblanc, etc.). As the song goes “Future’s so bright I gotta wear shades”

    Better times are ahead

Montreal was never going to win anything with Price in net anyways. Dude needs serious therapy. Good goalie, when the pressure is normal. Nice guy. Im sure he gives back alot to all sorts of foundations and communities. Hes not clutch thats all. With that said, I wouldn’t mind seeing a team, that’s never won the cup win again this year. San Jose, St. Louis, or Washington. NOT OTTAWA. And if theres a team I dont mind repeating its Chicago, thats it.

Theres going to only be a single Canadian club remaining after the first round. Hopefully not a single person on this site is pulling for them.
