Liveblog: Game 46 – Markov wins classic game in OT 2-1

Superb hockey

That was the best 62 minutes of hockey the Bell Centre has seen this season.

Andrei Markov won it in Overtime after some spectacular goaltending at both ends by Carey Price, who made 19 saves, and homeboy Corey Crawford, who faced 37 shots by the Canadiens.

Markov's second-period goal opened the scoring.

The Hawks tied it up in the third on Marian Hossa's 16th of the season, off great passes by Patrick Sharp and Jonathan Toews.

Markov bags second

And wins it!

Hawks tie it up

Three of the best players in the league combined on a sweet passing play to tie the game:

Patrick Sharp to Jonathan Toews over to Marian Hossa.

Canadiens out shot the visitors 34-20 over three periods

Fourth line does it

George Parros parked himself in Corey Crawford's face and Andrei Markov scored from a few feet inside the blueline.

It  was the first CH goal Parros has been on for this season.

The visitors were held to eight shots through the game's first 30 minutes.

And when the Chicago power play finally got a chance, late in the period, the PK was brilliant.

Shots in the period were 11-9 Canadiens.

Game of the Season, so far.

Great hockey

Best first period at the Bell Centre in a while.

Skating, slick passing, scoring chances ... it had it all.

But no scoring.

The Canadiens looked dangerous on their two power plays.

Shots were 11-6 for the home side.

Cup-holders in town

For the first time in almost three years, the Chicago Blackhawks pay a visit to the Bell Centre on Saturday night.

On April 5, 2011, Carey Price made 42 saves – including 19 in he second period – and P.K. Subban beat Corey Crawford in Overtime for a 2-1 Canadiens win.

Price will start Saturday night, and let's hope his recently-tweaked groin is not subjected to another 40-plus shot bombardment.

But don't bet against it.

Your Montreal Canadiens have a mixed record against Western Conference powerhouses this season.

In October, they beat Anaheim 4-1 at the Bell Centre and lost 2-0 to visiting San Jose two days later.

After losing on the road to Minnesota and Colorado, the Canadiens  came home to face St. Louis and took the mighty Blues to a Shootout before succumbing 3-2.

L.A. beat the Canadiens 6-0 on Dec. 10 and they were 5-1 losers in St. Louis on the 19th.

The reigning Stanley Cup champions ride a two-game losing streak into Montreal, where the Hawks will face a couple alumni.

Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin and goaltender coach Stéphane Waite will be facing their former employer Saturday night.

Former Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier is a scout for Chicago. And the Hawks front office is run by Stan Bowman, son of the legendary Scotty.

George Parros returns to the Canadiens lineup. Francis Bouillon is a healthy scratch.

I’ll be the first to say that when I read Boone’s info regarding the records, previous wins, streaks, etc., I got an uneasy feeling about the outcome. My fears were quickly subsided though within the first ten minutes of the game. You just knew that the team was prepared to play. I wasn’t certain that we would win, but I knew we were ready to work. I couldn’t be happier!

I’m taking the family out for lunch tomorrow!

  2. theox_8 says:

Such a good game. ! If the team played like this every night I wouldn’t feel to bad at all if they lost . Great compete tonight boys !

  3. 24 Cups says:

Redemption (noun) – amends, atonement, deliverance, emancipation, liberation, pardon, reclamation, recovery, rehabilitation, reinstatement, reparation, rescue and salvation.

    (from the Slowville Thesaurus)

    • krob1000 says:

hmm…I still think of redemption as a hockey card I have to mail away to get the real card…what a pain in the ass those were..

    • punkster says:

      Great old time game

      Still SUBBANGIN’ BABY…

      • 24 Cups says:

Montreal could have easily won 5-1 with Boucher as coach. Too bad that Therrien has lost the room:)

A game like this is worth so much more than just two points in the standings. Psychologically, there could be long term benefits throughout the rest of the season. It’s timing was perfect and being against the Cup champions was the icing on the cake. Lots of intangibles and feel good stories on so many levels.

  6. Haberoooo13 says:

He’d look pretty good as a hab..
Quite a night for 2014 draft eligible Aaron Ekblad. Big d-man had 4 goals and one assist in BAR’s 8-5 win over KGN

    Lafleur coming out rather gingerly…

  7. Mavid says:

not sure why my comment was removed, all I did was point out Cassie’s history after that knob put that dumb comment on

  8. habs001 says:

This is the type of game the playoffs will be like..The Habs still have to be much better at producing pp goals as most playoffs games will come down to that…Habs deserved to win this game but because they could not score on the pp and the 5 on 5 many changes they could have easily lost the game at the end on the goal post play…

  9. PrimeTime says:

Timo’s only post of the day. Lol. Not backing up his comments speaks volumes.

    TimoJANUARY 11, 2014 AT 1:35 PM
So, what are the bets for the spread tonight. I say Hawks by 4 goals. See, I am not always negative.

    DenjenJANUARY 11, 2014 AT 1:37 PM
You make me so angry sometimes Timo!

    PrimeTimeJANUARY 11, 2014 AT 1:39 PM
I’ll take those odds. Put me down for $100 that Habs cover.

I’ll put $100 down on that. Thanks Timo.

  10. krob1000 says:

so…was it Parros or securing his Olympic spot that brought us the real Emelin back? Personally I thought he would hold off that style until after the Olympics…it is big for Russians….but maybe with Parros back he feels secure enough to be himself. Totally different but the same Emelin…I truly believe he has been holding back for some time…big difference when he is hitting…trickles all the way down the lineup.

  11. Habs4LifeInTO says:

I love the way the puck was on end on Marky’s stick and he just went with it and got the winner. That is poise!

    24 cups and counting….

    • krob1000 says:

former forward….he has always been one to be aware of how much is generated just by getting pucks to the net…that is why I don’t understand why so many d just dump pucks into the corner.

  12. db says:

Markov deserves 2 more years at 6 mil each. He’d get more as a UFA..

  13. 25Stanleycups says:

Its so refreshing to see the team show up, as they can. They have all the heart, and soul….and SIZE of a top team. If they only just work hard every game, instead of these less then half spirited affairs like Philly. Whats it gonna take to get the mindset to change, that you have to work hard all the time. Especially if your the Montreal Canadiens. Lets Go HABS

  14. GL says:

Gotta give the Habs credit. played their best game of the season. Good game sample of no Goonery by both teams the way hockey is suppose to be played with skill and finesse. No matter which team won I enjoyed every minute of it. But of course I’m glad the Habs came away with the 2-points.
A couple of scrums tonight nothing wrong with that. its a part of Hockey.

  15. Sportfan says:

YAY good job boyos! Love the Habs don;t mind the Hawks Markov is awesome ! etc etc GO HABS GO 😀

  17. justintime says:

Markov will get all the praise, and he deserves it. But Emelin also had an incredible game! That’s the Emelin I remember!

  18. olematelot says:

    Haters are quiet tonight.

  19. Habs4LifeInTO says:

I would change one thing. Plekanec doesn’t get the -1. He played the best of everyone. What an amazing game. Habs were really really good tonight and the Hawks played well too. Nice win by our Habs!!!

    24 cups and counting….

  20. slyCH says:

RDS on the + and so forth… really.

  21. Thomas Le Fan says:

Very entertaining and satisfying win. About two seconds before Markov’s winner, I said to myself, “Please, no shootout!” Thank you Andrei and Carey.

Hockey isn’t everything … it’s the only thing … except for beer and guitars!

  22. habs-fan-84 says:

Wasn’t there someone earlier today talking about a 5-1 win for the Hawks tonight….and with such ignorant conviction.

  23. twilighthours says:

  24. HabFab says:

Apparently Moen said before the game, the players wanted to give Bergevin the win tonight.

  29. db says:

It’d be nice if we could always play teams that focus on hockey and puck possession… as soon as a team starts to hit us, we fold.

  30. CJ says:

Looks good on tsn. Update the standings folks, that’s two more for the good guys! Let’s build on this win and get on a roll. Big week ahead with the devils, senators and leafs. Go Habs!

  31. justintime says:

If only the Habs had a coach that could get this kind of performance out of the players every game!

But I’m not going to tarnish the most enjoyable game of the year with any more sarcasm…that really was a treat to enjoy tonight!

  32. The_Truth says:

I don’t know why Cassie Campbell is a commentator. She’s terrible.

  33. The Teacher says:

    Pleks with 11 shots.

  34. Ton says:

1st star of the telecast> Bob Cole!!!!!!!Wasn’t he great tonight! Lets give him credit…..nobody calls a game like him……. that voice is legendary!

I know the habs wont win cup but I do hope CHI wins it….what a nice team they are. Nonetheless we played a great game and I our future looks good!

    • Garbo says:

      Sarcasm I assume.

    • B says:

I don’t care for Cole, he past his best before date a while ago. Good thing there are other options for those of us who would rather not subject ourselves to his version of reality. If I didn’t have RDS, I would turn down the sound rather than listen to him. But hey, if you like him then enjoy the show. It was a lot of fun either way tonight!!

      –Go Habs Go!–

    • CJ says:

I agree that he has a legendary voice. He gets mixed up, but gives it his best. I have no issue listening to him. Trouble is they have paired him with that a$$clown Gary Galley who’s hatred for the Canadiens runs through the core of his being. He can’t even be impartial. I can’t stand the man.

    • savethepuck says:

sarcasm or not, I think Bob Cole is the only HNIC employee that is biased and doesn’t say we when talking about the Leafs. He calls Habs Leafs games on HNIC with no apparent bias like rthe rest of their staff. Sure he gets mixed up on players and #’s on the back of a sweater, but to me it is head and shoulders above CBC announcers that are obvious LeaF bLOWERS.

“They don’t hang Conference Championship Banners from the rafters here”
      Carey Price

  35. NLhabsfan says:

Let’s hope Ottawa loses I hate them as much as HNIC

  36. savethepuck says:

That is 3 losses in a row for Chicago. Fire Quenville he sucks and this team has no chance of winning the Cup this year. I think they should trade Sharp and Hossa at the deadline because they are too old and maybe they can get some good picks to rebuild for the future.

“They don’t hang Conference Championship Banners from the rafters here”
    Carey Price

  37. Habitant in Surrey says:

…funny, earlier, I told Steve (24 Cups) that playing Parros tonight will not add to Our positive goal differential

…of course, Parros stands patriotically in front of Crawford for Markov’s first goal

    …Gawd ! … I LOVE being wrong !!!

    … 🙂

  38. adadi says:

Hawks defence looked suspect. Way too many give aways. PK definitely looked better than Keith.

  39. Harditya says:

    What a game! MARKOVVVVV!!

  40. GomezForPresident says:

I literally almost defecated myself when markov sniped that one home….. this team is insane to watch? they truly play up and down to their opponents. add evander kane to this team by way of trading diaz, bourque, beauleiu and a first rounder and this team will make waves in the playoffs…. why we dont play this aggressive forecheck every game is beyond me, this team can skate any team into the ice! go habs go!

  41. Ring of Fire says:

Best of game of year by far…Crawford almost stole one..played with ton of passion something they’ve been lacking nice to see…Colts getting spanked……Seahawks v Pats Superbowl you heard it here first

    The Thin Blue Line.

  42. Cdnman1 says:

Going to celebrate. Great game! G-nite.

  44. 25Stanleycups says:

Wheres all the Therien haters…excellent coached game…real team effort.

    • adadi says:

Therrien is still a dud. Sorry but you asked.

      • 25Stanleycups says:

Sorry you dont recognize the fact a good coach when you see one. 4th place team in the conference…3rd in goals against, and 3rd in the penalty kill. You probably wanted Boucher to coach too. And would of him out to dry afterwards.

        • adadi says:

A well coached team plays well against poor teams and against mediocre teams. You don’t need a coach to get you up for the big games. I guess you’ve already forgotten the last game. No worries, most of us haven’t.

          • 25Stanleycups says:

Philly wasnt coaching…it was effort from your team. They didnt show up. Oh yeah but blame the coach!! Pfft

          • The Jackal says:

Lol, teams put up bad games against any kind of team, what you cite as the measure of being well-coached is just an arbitrary metric. Therrien’s record with the team speaks for itself.

            Hockey sine stercore tauri.

        • The Jackal says:

Don’t waste your breath with ’em, when MT leaves they’ll be firing the new coach 20 games in.

          Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  45. Reflektor says:

This is the kind of game HNIC just hates. Lucky their Leaf wasn’t playing the Panthers tonight or ⅔ of Canada wouldn’t of seen such an untruculent great game of skill.

  46. danhabsfan says:

Pleasure to watch this game with you all. See you next game. This was a fun game to watch.

  47. Gerry H says:

Game of the season, for sure.

  48. on2ndthought says:

Emelin had a bounce back game.
Parros responsible for the 1st goal and other nice offensive spells.
Interesting switch by Therrien: playing D on opposite sides in defensive face-offs ( I’m assuming to get those sticks pointing ‘in’ for defensive purposes). I’ll say it again: great game!

    “a cannonading drive”

  49. StevieM61 says:

    Bullet holes in my mirrors . . . .

  50. AH says:

Aaaaah, gotta love these Jekyll and Hyde Habs!!!!!!

  51. Plekasuares says:

Markov! Good stuff by Moen gionta and plek shutting down that line.

  52. NLhabsfan says:

Nice to see the HABS turn it up a notch and win with a solid effort.

Thankfully the haters and the trolls will be nowhere to be found on this site (at least for tonight)
