Liveblog: Game 45 – Philly Phutility continues with 3-1 loss

Wait'll next season!

The Canadiens have not won a regular-season game in Philadelphia since April 2, 2010.

They'll have to wait until next season to break the streak.

On their final visit to the City of Brotherly Love, the Canadiens were dreadful, losing 3-1 and being outshot 27-10.

Sean Couturier, Zac Rinaldo and Michael Raffl gave the home team a 3-0 lead before Tomas Plekanec scored a shorthanded goal to spoil Steve Mason's bid for a shutout.

You couldn't fault Peter Budaj, who made several good saves to keep the score vaguely respectable.

P.K. Subban took a penalty in a scrum that ended the second period and spent the first 12 minutes of the third nailed to the Canadiens' bench.

So what if he's an Olympian?

No scoring in the third period.

P.K. Subban, who took a penalty in the scrum that ended the second period, was benched for almost 12 minutes to start the third.

Shutout avoided

On the first shift after a Canadiens power play, Michael Raffl gave the Flyers a 3-0 lead.

Late in the period with Philadelphia on a power play, Tomas Plekanec converted a pass from Brian Gionta for his 14th of the season.

Brandon Prust and Zac Rinaldo fought to wake up the Wells Fargo Center crowd.

And the Canadiens will start the third period without P.K. Subban because of a scrum at the siren.

Shots were 12-6 for the hme team.

Who gives a shot?

The Canadiens had the first three shots of the game on Steve Mason.

Philadelphia had the next six, and Sean Couturier popped one into an open net past Peter Budaj to open the scoring.

The Canadiens were to go 10 MINUTES – including a power play – without a SoG, and the Flyers extended their lead when Zac Rinaldo scored his first of the season on a backhander that ticked in off Lars Eller.

The Canadiens had a late-period flurry, with another PP, and the shots were 9-9.

Tough town

As was the Spectrum back in the day, the Wells Fargo Centre is an inhospitable arena for your Montreal Canadiens.

They haven't won in Philadelphia since April, 2010.

On Dec. 12, this season's previous visit, the Canadiens were outshot 27-21 and only an Alex Galchenyuk goal, scored with 56 seconds to play, avoided the ignominy of a shutout in a 2-1 loss.

The Flyers were 3-2 overtime winners in New Jersey Tuesday night. They got a goal from Claude Giroux, who was snubbed by Team Canada earlier in the day.

Peter Budaj gets the start in goal.

Puck drops 7:40ish.

Chicago is gonna put this team in it’s place.

  2. Ozmodiar says:

MT teaching PK a lesson – “this is how we coached 30 years ago, son”.

Time to spin the “l’Antichambre wheel of coaches”??

    • dougiehab says:

I’M 60 years old….. Watched this team for 50 years… I have never in my life , seen this team so directionless ,listless ,confused…. I don`t know what to say , I`m sort of speechless Power play ha ha What the hell was that…………….. Coaching , the only thing it could be, changes are nesssary

      • chfan4life says:

I’ve been watching 30+ also. I totally agree with you on this one. I feel sorry for coaches that lose control of the team but I think this is where this is heading. The next 9 games are very tough. We could be heading into a 10 game losing streak……..MT will then be the scapegoat. Why wait, do it now. MB do it now to save the SEASON.

    • frontenac1 says:

Not a word yet on AC about the coaching F#ck up. Surprising eh?

  3. Habcouver says:

    Expecting a better effort Saturday.

    Waiting patiently for #25

  4. Habitant in Surrey says:

    …not even competitive

…until We upsize, this is a clear premonition of the playoffs

  5. CH Marshall says:

zero fire on this team.. and it’s been like this for a few weeks now

  6. Habbu says:

Missed it…..and am so glad for it.

  7. Cdnman1 says:

Bad since the start of December. When will MB or MT do something? Anything?

  8. Plekasuares says:

The GM is the worst imo

  9. durocher says:

That first PP may have been the worst PP I have ever seen.

No fight by the club. Makes me long for the days of Begin or Tom the Bomb who would run around and nail some dudes to generate some mo. We don’t have anyone to do that now.

    • chfan4life says:

Agree, I miss the spark of Begin. But something is definitely wrong. The whole team could not be that bad. They look like they playing not to get injured. They look disengaged…….playing like some stole their dog or something.

  10. Mondou6 says:

Things will get even more interesting if PK flourishes at the Olympics under a different coach, different style of play.

  11. Storman says:

This team played like they were in the midst of some huge inner team fight,, looks like a divorce is inevitable..

  12. Ring of Fire says:

Pretty uninspiring performance…looked like they were afraid of Flyers.

    The Thin Blue Line.

    • frontenac1 says:

Agreed. Prust knew it and changed the Mo. And what does Mike do? Leave PK exposed to Flyer BS without a minder. PK reacts and Gets Benched! Coaching 101 Mike!

  13. jsaz says:

This team is junk. Sick of it

  14. chfan4life says:

MB, we need to inject a big dose of intensity. Bring some players up, make a trade or pick a player off waivers. Team is playing flat for months. I see not one player stepping up. What is going on? Why subject your fans thru this garbage.

  15. topher5468 says:

    Awful, just awful,

  16. Et le but says:

Something has got to give here….we are better than that!

  17. duffy says:

    Therrien has to go ,,,,,,,

  18. Plekasuares says:

Therrien is an absolute JOKE. One guy whos gotta leave JJ Daignualt defense coach

  19. Danno says:

And mercifully, it has come to an end

  20. adadi says:

The retard does not even try to pull the goalie.

  21. habcertain says:

And we don’t pull the goalie……why?

  22. Reflektor says:

8 Olympians on the team. Therrien ticked he isn’t going to Sochi too.

  23. adadi says:

Well PK learned his lesson, heh. Thanks MT for making him a better player.

  24. Danno says:

Therien has this look of disgust on his face.

I predict he’s going to have an ugly post-game presser…

  25. habs-fan-84 says:

I think has to be by far the most frustrating game of the year (I missed the NYE game).

  26. Et le but says:

I believe we were perfect on the PK as well.

  27. Storman says:

At least we capitalized on our scoring chance.

  28. Plekasuares says:

    Budaj has been good

  29. Samovich says:

    And Patches clears it….

  30. jmac21 says:

    Down Chuckie??? MT answer… Dress 7 D man 🙂
    Coach of the year lol
    Piss off the farm too

  31. Plekasuares says:

    Gallagher off night.

  32. Plekasuares says:

Eller will never be a Plekanec like player.

  33. Storman says:

Even Gallagher has taken the night off, following the leadership of the veterans.

  34. Samovich says:

    Nice coverage Breier !!

  35. The Jackal says:

I tend to try to stay positive but this game is just painful.
I thought our struggles were a slump but I’m beginning to think the team just doesn’t have the horses. Maybe our collapse last season would have continued in a full season, and maybe that’s what’s going on now.

We’re still an above average team and it’s surprising we are where we are with this roster, but I’m starting to lose faith in MT being anything more than a transitional coach. He’s done some good stuff and has contributed to changing the culture in the room, but he’s just too old school and uncreative and apparently unable to make adjustments.

That being said I hope MB remains patient because he has the right idea. Panicking now would set the team back. Hopefully he is taking note of what we need most and is working round the clock to address our greatest needs.

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

    • Marc10 says:

It’s about effort. The guys are just not working and then playing catch up. It doesn’t help that other teams have figured out our D is simply not up to the job.

    • habstrinifan says:

You are being mealy mouth. Stand up and say it straight. That was destructive power-trip coaching and if you have ever played any competitive sport you KNOW IT.

  36. jmac21 says:

We will trade Patches and let PK walk then we will fire MT
Guy gets out coached EVERY NIGHT
DD is his go to guy ???

  37. adadi says:

Wow. Another slew foot by the Habs.

  38. Reflektor says:

The entire bench seems totally lost. Hope Molson is watching.

  39. Samovich says:

This one is on the coach, no hunches? timeout before the PP? anything to wake your team up, but no he benches his highest scorer

  40. chfan4life says:

Boy do they miss Galchenyuk tonight. Don’t think Habs have the depth to replace him. I can see the team struggle without him.

    Nothing working tonight.
    PP is terrible.
    Defense coverage is spotty.
    No intensity.
Way too many of these games lately.

  41. Davey93 says:

RDS will still defend this joke of a coach

  42. teamhab says:

    Get Camillerri

  43. durocher says:

Our passing has been horrible tonight — forcing passes, inaccurate passes, not making simple plays towards the net. It is sad that, like in the BG era, we’re still a perimeter team.

Bring up Dumont and LL, sit Bourque and Diaz

  44. Danno says:

Maybe there was a little too much celebrating by (and with) the Olympians?

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs

  45. Storman says:

Canadiens look like they are having a great time playing for each other tonight,, what a complete joke infinite no compete,

  46. Habilis says:

Every game that MT continues to coach this team is a bad day for this organization. That’s just a fact now. He’s gone beyond just being a mediocre coach. Now he’s damaging relationships that are more important and that will last longer on this team than him.
    He HAS to go.

  47. topher5468 says:

    Rene Bourque ?

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  48. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

MT should bench the refs for calling the bs penalty on Subban without the elbow to the Flyer.

  49. Habcouver says:

    Post Olympic selection blues…

    Waiting patiently for #25

  50. habs-fan-84 says:

Serious question, when was the last time we scored on the PP?
Also, no Eller on the PP is just dumb.

  51. Et le but says:

    Brutal PP…no compete

  52. Storman says:

Direct a puck at the net, for FFFFFFFFFFFF sake

  53. adadi says:

Well here’s hoping that this absolutely retarded move by MT is the beginning of the end for Him. Trouble is I don’t think MB is that much smarter.

  54. durocher says:

MT post-game remarks: “I bench PK because I dink PK need to dink about his play on d ice”

  55. Plekasuares says:

JJ daignueltt should go I believe

  56. Azriel says:

I still can’t believe this… I just hope they don’t win. He’s going to be justified in benching him if they ever come back.

  57. habcertain says:

How anyone can believe there isn’t something going on between MT and PK are just in denial

  58. Mavid says:

    common boys lets pot one

    Weed Wacker Grandma Smurf

  59. Samovich says:

Here we go send Diaz and the Cube

  60. Et le but says:

    Now or never boys…let’s go!

  61. Danno says:

    The door opens!

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs

  62. ABHabsfan says:

I wonder if Roger’s has asked Mike Johnson to join them next year? I’m thinking no

  63. rljmartin says:

For all you MT lovers out there… HE HAS TO GO!

Acts like he never played hockey in his life,

  64. CH Marshall says:

they have a great coach-player relationship

  65. nova scotia vees says:

M.T. Didn’t bench Eller for a stupid penalty..plays a dud like Bourque..but benches P.K.? He must be teaching “the boy” a lesson. What an idiot. Fire the dummy.

  66. Azriel says:

What baffles me is…. he prefers losing a game than giving an inch to PK?

He’s going to get so much heat because of that….WOW. Lets Bench the Norris Trophy winner.

    • Mondou6 says:

Then he puts PK back on the ice with 8 minutes left. At that point, why bother? You’re “teaching him a lesson” by sitting him for 10 minutes when you’re trying to come back from 2 goals down.

      WTF does that accomplish?

  67. Samovich says:

MT is horrible I just think he is establishing a bad double standard, has no feel for the game as its played and is stuck in his routines. I can’t wait until he calls that ” Icing” timeout.

  68. kingcammy says:

Why is it that when da Habs are down by 2 you know it’s pretty much a done deal, but when they’re up by 2 it’s far from over?

  69. temekuhabs says:

Ok MT we get it, you’re in charge!
Now, put him back out there!
    We’re losing!

  70. Plekasuares says:

BUT our great gm MB thinks its therrien why Subban made Team Canada. Bergevin is a complete idiot and a complete doorknob

  71. adadi says:

This is a clinic in coaching by MT and his stuff. Someone should write a book.

  72. SlovakHab says:

I’m wondering what Guy Boucher is doing these days.

Seriously, PK would flourish under him. And if Boucher gets Price’s goaltending unlike his time over in Tampa….

Just fire Therrien and never ever bring him back!!!

  73. Plekasuares says:

Why do you bench Subban. *_*

  74. habfaninottawa says:

So Subban gets his first shift 12 mins into the period. Wow. Therrien is doing a bang up job.

  75. Davey93 says:

Smart, bench your best player michel
