Liveblog: Game 44 – Canadiens play 40 great minutes, win 2-1, move past Tampa Bay into second place in Atlantic

Panthers finally de-clawed

It wasn't easy.

Through 40 minutes, the Canadiens outshot Florida 25-11.

Goals by David Desharnais and Brian Gionta offset one by Sean Bergenheim.

The visitors came alive in the third period, unleasing a 16-shot barrage at Carey Price.

He stopped them all.

The Canadiens outshot Florida 35-27 on the game, but Tim Thomas kept it close.

The win moved the Canadiens past Tampa Bay into second place in the Atlantic Division, behind Boston.

Price slams the door

16 saves in the third period.

Hello, Sochi

The captain is hot

Brian Gionta had one goal in 28 games.

Then the Canadiens' captain scored against Ottawa on Saturday and popped another against Florida.

Credit Tomas Plekanec with chasing down Ed Jovanoski and stripping the Panthers defenceman behind Tim Thomas. Pleks then fed a saucer pass to Gionta, who beat Thomas high.

The Canadiens outshot Florida 12-6, 25-11 through 40 minutes.

Thomas hot

  • David Desharnais beat Tim Thomas on the Canadiens' first shot, 6:23 into the game.

The home team dominated until Sean Bergenheim beat Carey Price on Florida's fourth shot of the game.

Thomas made 12 saves after conceding the goal.

Carey Price faced five shots – equalling Max Pacioretty's individual total ... plus hitting the goalpost.

The Panther paradox

Florida sits 15 points behind your Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference standings.

The Panthers have scored 11 fewer goals than the Canadiens.

They've allowed 32 more.

But for all the evident disparity in quality between the two teams, Florida has beaten the Canadiens twice this season: 2-1 at the Bell Centre on Dec. 15, 4-1 two weeks later in Sunrise.

In both games, Scott Clemmensen outgoaled Peter Budaj.

Carey Price will face the Panthers Monday night.

And P.K. Subban will strut his stuff one more time before the Olympic roster is announced on Tuesday.

Puck drops 7:40ish.

Check back later for live game blogging.

The Dawn of hockey on TV in Canada:

  1. Plekasuares says:

    Huge penalty there

  2. Plekasuares says:

    Here comes the Noles! Acc!

  3. Plekasuares says:

Picked off by Pj williams! Great player

  4. GL says:

Bournival should be on the 3rd line. Bourque is deadwood. Should be with Moen And Prust on the 4th line!!

  5. Habs4LifeInTO says:

PK will be on the team. Carey and PK are going to have the time of their lives! Good for them both! Also happy for Max, Tomas, Raph. Not sure about our Russians though (likely Andrei, hopefully Alexei) but certainly wish them luck.

    24 cups and counting….

  6. GL says:

I think they’ll Accomplish what they set out to do at the start of the season that’s to make the playoffs. Beyond that not very far. Gonna get physically beat in the playoffs.

  7. Plekasuares says:

  8. habstrinifan says:

My friend’s 12 yr old just read my post. How do I explain to him what a telegram is?

  9. Adidess says:

There should be an HIO poll on whether Price and Subban make it, but there isn’t. So here goes. Wich Habs players will be named on Team Canada tomorrow?

    1. Price and PK

    2. Price.

    3. A darkhorse – like say DD, who is on fire right now 🙂

I say 1. Both of our thoroughbreds make it.

  10. slyCH says:

RDS talking Fleury, Price, Luongo as goalie selection for Sochi. I agree, but for Fleury… he sucks.

  11. The_Truth says:

Not very impressed with Eller and Chucky. Supposedly being our future top 2 centers, they certainly don’t do much. I don’t like them together. There is rarely any good passing between them. Seems like it is either one or the other going at it alone, trying to go through the team.

  12. D Man says:

Geez I’m sick of the Seminole chant and chop. Go Auburn!

You can’t be both a Habs and a Leafs fan

  13. slyCH says:

Just rode my scooter through the coldest rain I’ve ever felt on this Island (Key West) in 15 years living here. Snow was not far from my mind. Winds almost Hurricane strong. This is one cold front for the ages. Low 50’s…

Just saw the replays of the 2 disallowed Hab goals. Seems like they were part of the “conspiracy” variety. I’m stoked for the win.

  14. habcertain says:

Another one of those low scoring squeakers, where u want to feel good, but level of quality play was low. We can’t go far on hockey like this. Markov is certainly starting to fade, not good for a weak defense, everyone is watching PK for obvious reason but our #2 is struggling.

  15. Fransaskois says:

I’ve been awfully busy over the last couple of months and haven’t had much of a chance to spend any time here at HIO. So, SmartDog style, I’ve got a couple of questions for you.

    1) What’s happened at HIO in the last month?
    2) Has the best pizza in the world been determined?
    3) Does Briere have a spot on the team?
    4) Out of ten, how do we think our prospects did at the WJHC?
    5) Has Boone upgraded the hamsters that run the site?

    • DipsyDoodler says:

      1. Lots of angst.
      2. Yup. You have to go to Rome to get it.
      3. Yes.
      4. 6.5
      5. Replaced them with mice.

    • CJ says:

Best pizza I’ve ever had was pizzeria Regina in Boston. Although it’s now franchised, the original in the north end is the best. My younger brother is finishing his Masters in engineering at M.I.T., so it’s a nice treat when I go to visit.

  16. Phil C says:

Briere seems to have re-energized Gionta. If the Habs can get two lines scoring, that will help.

  17. habstrinifan says:

So this time tomorrow… which is happening?

    a) The Pro Norris winner guys cussing and crying foul.

    b) The Bubble Norris crowd laying out reams of Corsi and Fenwick stats showing why Babcock/Ward are right.

c)Yannick Weber sending P.K a”wish you were here buddy” telegram from Sochi?

  18. Plekasuares says:

Im gonna be tired tommorow. go ACC!

  19. punkster says:

  20. Plekasuares says:

Herreee comes the noles? Is anyone with me here or you all on the SEC bandwagon?

  21. temekuhabs says:

Yeah, they played ok for 40min
    The game is 60min

  22. habs001 says:

Solid performance by Price but the third period looked liked the games vs the Devils where they won but loses followed..Plecks okay but will never win the Selke as he is average at best at faceoffs and totally not reliable in key faceoffs….For some reason this team would do better vs the Bruins or Penguins in the playoffs…I dont think they would beat Ottawa,Flyers,Tampa…

  23. adadi says:

Here’s hoping that MT leaves Briere with Gio and Pleks. They may be small, but I would guess no other line in the league has their combined hockey IQ and they definitely look pretty good.

  24. mrhabby says:

habs played good for 40 minutes but man they make it look difficult. Iam always left with the feeling that the other team can come back and score 2-3 easy ones. If not for Price it would be very scary.

A win is a win and were still treading water ..come on Bergevin do shocking needs some stronger pieces.

can Tinordi/NB or Pateryn be any worse than Murray.

  25. temekuhabs says:

Habs got totally out worked in the 3rd. Only reason we won was because of Price. That’s all…

    • Adidess says:

Yeah, but they dominated in the first two periods and they won, so let’s cut them some slack.

I don’t understand why it’s unacceptable that the goalie does more than the rest of the team in a win. Do we ever say this about a forward who scores a hat-trick (like he’s the only reason we won). Price is part of the team, when he plays well to give them a win, it means they play good enough as a collective to win.

      • habstrinifan says:

I think it’s different when you base your entire system on the goalie being your #1 star and Molson Cup winner season after season after season.

        • kalevine says:

when u pick him first in the draft (rarely done for goalies) and pay him 6.5 mill, then yes, you build your team around him. I don’t agree with it but there it is

  26. habstrinifan says:

So question we are overlooking.. hangs over the team like the proverbial elephant in the room.

Do we need an elephant in the room?

Seriously.. I dont think Parros is or should be back .. and certainly not in the role he fills on this team. Thinking about Philly… and the stretch drive.

  27. B says:

Habs out hit Florida 20-17, Pacioretty leads the way with 4 of them.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  28. DipsyDoodler says:

PJ Stock’s headline on ‘AC: “I wouldn’t want to be in Yzerman’s shoes.”

PJ: in what parallel universe are you a candidate to be the GM of anything, let alone Team Canada?

  29. theox_8 says:

A playoff series against Philly scares me. . And history has shown recently hasn’t gone very well ..

  30. Ring of Fire says:

Love to b in Southern Cal right n now n watching National Championship instead of minus 30 wind chill n a full blown blizzard….tks Habs for making the night bearable

    The Thin Blue Line.

  31. Ncognito says:

If Team Canada’s brass was watching that game Campbell and Boyes makes the team 😉

  32. CJ says:

Not to spoil the mood, but I wish the isles would have saved a few for tomorrow night in Toronto.

  33. habstrinifan says:

Was this Moen’s most TOI ever???

    • CJ says:

I thought he earned his ice. I think this has been a very good bounce back from last season for Travis. I’m sure his professional pride was hurt. I have really liked his play from the very first game of the season when he pounded Mark Fraser.

  34. Ring of Fire says:

    That’s a great win…dominate for 2 periods could’nt bury chances n win,those r tough ones to win….Briere looking good

    The Thin Blue Line.

  35. bellcentre hotdog says:

    Price was totally solid.

The difference maker tonight for sure.

  36. on2ndthought says:

It was ugly Adidess, but that team and that style match up well with us. Every hab looked good for parts of the game, and bad in other parts. Officiating was sub-par (that is saying something). Price looked good despite some mix ups with his D. Take the points to Philly!

    “a cannonading drive”

  37. duffy says:

It would be nice if this team played three periods each night instead of two.

  38. B says:

Little guys like Gionta and Desharnais are totally ineffective against big teams like Florida?

    –Go Habs Go!–

  39. B says:

It looks like Plekanec is rubbing his nose with the puck before he tosses it over the glass.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  40. Adidess says:

Know what, it might have been ugly, but, finally, a win against Florida. Good enough for me!

  41. TMan1969 says:

Thomas kept the cats in it…

  42. Mondou6 says:

Final score was a lot closer than it should have been, but we’ll take it.

  43. PrimeTime says:

Lose and fire the coach. Win and coach should still be fired cuz it wasn’t an impressive win. What a joke!!!

  44. TMan1969 says:

Outshoot, out hit, some scary moments…great win!!

  45. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

This victory brought to you, once again, by a score of 2-1

  46. krob1000 says:

Somewhere Gargamel is downing a 40 of vodka….Smurfs have scored last 5 Hab goals

  47. danhabsfan says:

My 3 stars: price, Pleks, Murray

  48. Chuck says:

Another game where Carey allows fewer than 2 goals… nice!

  49. HabinBurlington says:

Ugly at the end, but a win nonetheless.

  50. Mavid says:

ya baby..I like it when we win

    Weed Wacker Grandma Smurf

  51. Et le but says:

Anything but convincing but 2 points nonetheless…put ’em in the bank

  52. piter says:

    Nice, gg guys…

  53. Cdnman1 says:

    Finally beat Florida!

  54. DipsyDoodler says:

    OK I’ll take that.

  55. durocher says:

Good win, wish we showed more killer instinct to put this game away

  56. kalevine says:

  57. Cdnman1 says:

    We got this

  58. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

Was Plekanec tossed because he might have won that? #ZebraSuck

  59. Samovich says:

It could get ugly on Saturday

  60. kalevine says:

4 on 2 and the puck doesn’t get close to the net!

  61. Cdnman1 says:

    PK is back!

  62. Marc10 says:

Boyes looked like Malkin out there.

  63. Mavid says:

    PK all better 🙂

    Weed Wacker Grandma Smurf

  64. w.p.d says:

Need a new coach. Do we even have a system ?

  65. Habbu says:

Make the simple play boys……no more fancy stuff until we get the empty netter

  66. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

Subban on the bench. How long was that between whistles? Holy crap! Crankcube were trapped on the ice!

  67. TMan1969 says:

PK coughs up the puck and fights… fix it…damn right he’s going to Sochi

  68. habsfaninboston says:

I’ve never seen a team with so much trouble getting the puck out of their zone.

  69. DipsyDoodler says:

    Murray/Bouillon better than Marky/ Emelin.

  70. Harditya says:

Price saving the Habs’ butts again.

  71. PrimeTime says:

Are Boone and Timo the same?

  72. durocher says:

PK not making the best case tonight for his Olympic selection

    • Adidess says:

If Yzerman is in front of his TV tonight determining whether PK should make it, I would say he’s half-*ssing this entire thing. The case should be based on his last two seasons of play, not tonight.

  73. Habcouver says:

    How badly hurt is PK?

    Waiting patiently for #25
