Liveblog: Game 42 – Canadiens win a wild one in Dallas to begin 2014

Trip ends on winning note

Max Pacioretty, who will be on Team USA at the Sochi Olympics, had two goals and two assists.

P.K. Subban – who better be on Team Canada – had a goal and three assists.

David Desharnais, Brendan Gallagher (during a third-period power play) added goals, and Lars Eller beat Kari Lehtonen top shelf from a bad angle for the winning goal.

Carey Price, who was all over the place in the game, gave up goals to Jamie Benn, Valeri Nichushin, Tyler Seguin and Brenden Dillon.

Dallas outshot the Canadiens 32-28.

FIVE goals

After Brendan Gallagher's power-play goal made it 4-2, Dallas scored twice in 47 seconds: Tyler Seguin's 21st and one from downtown by defenceman Brenden Dillon.

Shades of Carolina, right?

Lars Eller went top shelft from an impossible angle for his 10th of the season and Max Pacioretty got his second of the game and 19th of the season into an empty net.

A bit of everything

Dallas rookie Valeri Nichushkin beat Carey Price on a penalty shot.

Then P.K. Subban, who had set up David Desharnais for the period's first goal, skated through the Dallas D to restore the Canadiens' lead with his seventh goal of the season.

P.K. has three points in the game.

Josh Gorges, who tripped Nichushkin to draw the penalty shot, also made two great plays with Carey Price down and out of position.

Shots were 12-10 for the Canadiens.

Max again

Max Pacioretty, who has four goals on this road trip, took a perfect lead pass from P.K. Subban and beat Kari Lehtonen with a wicked rising wrister for his 18th of the season.

Jamie Benn, converting a nice feed from Tyler Seguin for his 14th, had given the home team a 1-0 lead.

Shots were 11-6 for the Stars, who won an unreal 15 of 17 faceoffs.

The second half begins

The Canadiens start the homestretch – and 2014 portion – of their schedule with a visit to Dallas.

The American Airlines Center will be warmer than what the Leafs and Wings endured at the Big House on New Year's Day.

And it will be much warmer than Montreal, where the wind-chill factor hit minus-40C on Thursday.

Canadiens fans will just have to keep warm by yelling at their TV screens – which we did a lot of during the team's visits to Florida and Carolina.

Unless they meet in the Stanley Cup finals, this will be the final Canadiens-Stars game of the season. Dallas visited the Bell Centre on Oct. 29, when Carey Price made 26 saves and goals by Michaël Bournival and Rene Bourque secured a 2-1 win.

The Stars are 5-0-2 in their last seven, including two wins over the mighty L.A. Kings. Their offence is powered by Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn and ... Erik Cole! The former Canadien has five goals in his last eight games.

  1. teamhab says:

How about this, Briere and 2nd round draft pick for Camillerri

  2. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Have to go to work early and furnace is malfunctioning with -30C weather. At least this took my mind off my problems…thanks everyone and have a good night.

  3. Habilis says:

There isn’t another country on the planet where P.K. Subban isn’t one of the first 5 skaters (never mind D-men) chosen for the national team. I know we have far and away the best collection of players on paper. But other than Crosby and maybe Stamkos, I can’t name one other Canadian skater that I would take over P.K.

He should be a lock by now. If they don’t pick him… Heck, if they don’t play him every game, then they’re just not giving themselves the best chance to win.

  4. on2ndthought says:

OK, one last time (I wish): why did MB sign Briere?

Ans: PAG in the PLAYOFFS! Relax, folks; we’re not there yet (and he may not be our best bet to make them) (and we may make the playoffs and Danny B still sucks! At least, THEN, you can say he was a bad signing)

    “a cannonading drive”

  5. Rad says:

Any deal that sends Briere out of town would be a good thing for the Habs. Addition by subtraction. To think that Briere was the one who received the torch from Guy Lafleur on Opening night … shame on the Montreal brass for that ill-fated signing.

  6. on2ndthought says:

Best post of the night: CHicohabs: “already a statue; Phaneuf”
Worst: East OHF: “Max” (did you see DD’s goal??? Max brutalizes a D-man with size by pushing him out of the way. He likes to score from outside, doesn’t mean he won’t use his strength on the rush, or cycle. His goal was a ‘power’ wrist shot, beats anyone on the planet and had nothing to do with luck, or bodies in front)

    “a cannonading drive”

  7. 19yan65 says:

Despite all the points paciorty and subban got tonight in my opinion the best player tonight was by far josh gorgres.A great game tonight alot of fun to watch. For you guys who like rivalries remember that we are going to have the nordiques back sooner than you think.Awesome Bruins/nordiques/leafs just love it

    • SlovakHab says:

      By far?
He had a good game, but he was by far better than Subban who created 4 goals, and Pacio who sniped 2 and assisted on the other 2?

Without Subban, Price and Pacioretty, this team is worse than Buffalo.

  8. Timo says:

Holy molly… you people put over 1300 comments tonight. Was it that intense tonight? Did I miss any wars?

  9. Habcouver says:

An entertaining evening from both game and Posters.
    Thank you and goodnight.

    Go Habs Go!

    Waiting patiently for #25

  10. Timo says:

So what’s the scoop on White? Why/when was he injured? Did he eat one during the fight and Habs have another concussion or was it something else?

  11. rogieshan says:

Ville Leino still has three years and a 4.5 mil annual cap hit after this season. So, unless the Sabres want to take Bourque & Desharnais’s contracts in return, it’s hard to envision a scenario where Bergevin would trade for the Finn.

  12. Timo says:

For a change this was an entertaining game to watch. Don’t get me wrong, Habs still suck and I can’t believe they blew another lead but still… an entertaining game nonetheless.

PK is a monster. A Pierre McGuire MONSTER! His goal was absolutely unreal. So was his setup of DD’s goal.

D sucked as expected, so did other 3/4 of the team. I was happy to see Gallagher score for all the hard work and abuse he took during the game.

    Therrien is a donkey.

  13. ProHabs says:

    Briere for John Scott?????

  14. Plekasuares says:

Fsu better wipe Auburn. Need the ACC to gain some more respect. So happy Bama lost!!!

  15. synthpro says:

Who here things the Habs Post Game show sucks?
I don’t remember the name of the announcers tonight, but for the life of them they cannot carry a show by themselves.

Tony, Mitch and Simon Solikous do one hell of a better job when they are there.

All I heard tonight was commercials and the out of town score board half a dozen times. Surely if you are given the privilege of hosting such a show you would have more to bring to the table than these two gentleman did tonight and all through the holidays.

  16. naweed235 says:

I guess the thing that makes this Buffalo trade rumors all the more believable, is the fact that Eklund has not even mentioned it once!

    • PureGuava says:

He’s the worst! I clicked a link to a Pacioretty trade rumour the other day, and it was all speculation without an ounce of fact or even logic…..I was like “what is this garbage?’…’Hockey Buzzz?’ why does that sound…ugh..Eklund” (closes browser).

      He’s terrible.

“Of course I’m crazy, but that doesn’t mean I’m wrong.”

  17. Mike D says:

Not to re-open Konopka Gate from 2011, but did anyone else see that he was put on waivers?

  18. Ring of Fire says:

Congrats to Bob Stoops…..classy coach,Saban too.

    The Thin Blue Line.

  19. ProHabs says:

I really hope the rumour of Briere for Ville Leino is false.

  20. rogieshan says:

I’m convinced Bergevin is not a fan of Jagr from having played with him in Pittsburg in 2000-02. Remember back then, Jaromir had a bit of a selfish reputation.

  21. CJ says:

    Wow, this is incredible. Sooners!

  22. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Game summary: PK said F#@$ this s@#% and took over.

BTW: Somebody teach White to fight please.

  23. DipsyDoodler says:

I can’t see Buffalo giving up a legit NHLer much less a prospect for Briere.

They’re in rebuilding mode so a draft pick for Briere would just be silly.

An exchange of problems is the bedtime we can hope for.

  24. Gerry H says:

    I never propose trades, but…

Suppose NJ goes into a slump and falls completely out of contention by the deadline (not hard to imagine with Philly gaining traction and the Rangers starting to gel). Think they’d consider flipping Jagr for Gionta and a middling prospect? They’re weak at RW, especially without Jagr, who’d likely ask for and get a trade if they were out of it. Gio is a goner in any event and might well want to go back to Jersey. He’s looking at a pay cut and would provide leadership in the room.

Lots of “ifs,” but I’d love to see Jagr, Pleks, Bourque/Bournival for a playoff run…

    • CJ says:

Possible, but I’d prefer Montreal not mortgage the future. If Gionta would net a pick and or a prospect, that would be ideal, provided his position could be filled internally by a Christian Thomas, Louis Leblanc, etc.

      • Gerry H says:

I don’t think it would take much of a prospect. Not a Beaulieu or Tinordi, but perhaps a Holland or someone with that kind of moderate potential that would fit a need for Jersey.

    • The_Truth says:

Never will happen. If Jersey is out, why would they want UFA Gionta who is half the player Jagr is?

  25. Eddie says:

That was a great game! Loved every minute!

  26. habstrinifan says:

Leafs (according to TSN) putting up statue in front of A/C. Statue of someone big who wore the Leafs sweater.

    I say is Rob Ford.

  27. Sportfan says:

    I hate twitter sometimes -_-

Edit: It was a fake account I am very sad now and very sorry for jumping the gun, I though MB managed a Sam Pollock move, as I said I hate twitter… haha

  29. habstrinifan says:

tsn is saying lots of talk between Buffalo and Mtl.

  30. Ring of Fire says:

Back to 7….lot of time left

    The Thin Blue Line.

  31. Sportfan says:

God Edmonton is such a sad story a lot of talent but no goalies and not a lot of D. Granted their coach looks like a joke I doubt he lasts a year.

      Eakins is an annoying fellow.
Hate to say that I’m interested in seeing how much worse Yakupov’s +/- gets (… he’s a minus 1 tonight).

      Waiting patiently for #25

  32. nova scotia vees says:

Love, love P.K. Finally had him on late in the game. Give him the green light and let him lead the attack..superb.
Now why were gionta and bourque on in the last 2 minutes? Bourque!!!
Finally..Price must not revert to his old “on my knees”, goalie. Canada needs the new Price.

  33. boing007 says:

Eller’s goal was right up there with some of AK 27’s memorable Habs goals.

    • FormalWare says:

I seriously think Larry should study the hockey instructional videos of L’Artiste! If he can learn to hit that 4-by-6 inch aperture in the upper-right corner with consistency… watch out!

  34. Adidess says:

MT clearly happy – giving praise to players by name and endorsing PK for Team Canada. Wants to see both Price and PK make it.

No ‘work-in-progress’ bs, pomping the tires of his star players; I like the turnaround.

  35. Sportfan says:

PK not making the Olympics won’t make any sense.

  36. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

Wow! Nothing but positive comments from the portly coach. Even about PK. He sounds pretty happy.

  37. CJ says:

Win or lose, AJ MacCaron’s girl is still smoking hot…..
Just saying. Of course, not nearly as beautiful as my girl.

  38. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

A fantastic performance by the DD/Patches/Gally line, but what if they get shut down? Gionta and especially Bourque need to start contributing. At least our captain works hard. Bourque just angers me.

    I remember Dec. 31, 1975

  39. Sportfan says:

I’m happy we won, was upset when they tied it 4-4, but is it a problem that basically 1 line did all the offensive work, or meh wtv?

  40. Stevie.Ray says:

Would Briere and a pick or a prospect be enough to get Moulson from Buffalo? They’re clearly in full tank mode. They would probably be able to get a better deal at the deadline for Moulson though.

  41. Peter Young says:

Going to bed quite happy tonight. We are so fortunate to have P.K. Subban. He should go down as one of the Canadiens’ legendary stars if he stays with the team and plays long enough. This game had almost everything–extremely entertaining. And we get the two points. All in all, a bit of all right.

  42. Ring of Fire says:

    Wow Sooners’convert convert 1st n 30 go up by 14….incredible

    The Thin Blue Line.

  43. BCG says:

Hmmm… my post is somehow not showing up. We’ll try one more time.

Great game by P.K. His talent is extraordinary and his defense is great too. Despite the naysayers and the fairweather fans, like Boone, he is already a pretty good defenseman at the tender age of 24. Sure he has bad games (like Price), but clearly he and Price are important cornerstones for the Habs moving forward. They will both have bad games – but like Price, it serves no purpose to point out P.K.’s learning curve. Like Price – he has shown every evidence that he gets better. Unlike Price – P.K. has an award.

Thanks to MB and TT – I have little respect for the NHL since the lockout years, but I’m excited for the future thanks to TT’s scouting!

  44. CHicoHab says:

    Walrus night in Canada Saturday.
    I hope #81 pots 3.

  45. TMan1969 says:

    Parity…is the answer…and better discipline (a bit)

  46. Sportfan says:

Here’s a hypothetical question if Briere did get traded to Buffalo for who ever, would he get booed like there was no tomorrow his first game against the Habs?

  47. HabinBurlington says:

So Murray back in lineup and a regulation win…..hmmmmm

  48. WindsorHab-10 says:

I need an explanation. How the hell do we blow a 3 goal lead to a team like Carolina but end up beating a pretty good team like Dallas?

    I give up.

  49. habstrinifan says:

OK Moderators; MT lovers; Posters with kids; Prudes….

If MT comes on anD says this is the sort of game that fans love and coaches hate… I’m gonna do some real CUSSING!

  50. Ring of Fire says:

    The Thin Blue Line.

  51. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

Desharnais, 19 points in last 21 games. Almost a point a game. But apparently he doesn’t deserve top line minutes. Strange.

    I remember Dec. 31, 1975

  52. Cdnman1 says:

If PK is not on the Canadian team, I’m cheering for team USA.

  53. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

I’m not sure there are that many Stars fans who would have loved the outcome of that great game. Of course, I’m not sure there are that many Stars fans at all.

  54. CH Marshall says:

Gotta say it: Thank you BOB and TT for drafting PK in the second round. A freakin second rounder.

  55. GL says:

Tonight a 60-minute team they came to battle for 60-minutes and that was the difference and they came away with 2-points. If PK don’t make Team Canada I hope the best they do is Bronze.

  56. slyCH says:

    Great win.

As for my blow up with Boone earlier, I apologize. I’m home sick and irritable from exhaustion after double shifts at work with no end in sight for another week. Not an excuse. But when someone has an issue, however ill placed or perceived as it may be, it should not be dealt by acerbating the situation with an insult. Not the proper way to approach customer (sic) relations. Just my 2 cents.

Again my apologies to Mr. Boone and all.

  57. Marc10 says:

PK Subban. What a legend. I love this kid. There’s no way he’s off the roster for Team C. If that happens, Babcock and Yzerman, Nicholson, Lowe and co need to be fired for gross incompetence. It would be like when the national team ‘brain trust’ left Mario Lemieux off the junior team.

  58. CJ says:

Feel sorry for those posters who couldn’t get behind the team tonight. I recall reading a post that went as far as to suggest that it would be nice to see Cole light us up. Oh well, the rest of us can bask in the glory of a crazy win.

  59. Haberoooo13 says:

Listening to Brunet on anti-chambre and I think the Habs lost!

    Lafleur coming out rather gingerly…
