Liveblog: Game 42 – Canadiens win a wild one in Dallas to begin 2014

Trip ends on winning note

Max Pacioretty, who will be on Team USA at the Sochi Olympics, had two goals and two assists.

P.K. Subban – who better be on Team Canada – had a goal and three assists.

David Desharnais, Brendan Gallagher (during a third-period power play) added goals, and Lars Eller beat Kari Lehtonen top shelf from a bad angle for the winning goal.

Carey Price, who was all over the place in the game, gave up goals to Jamie Benn, Valeri Nichushin, Tyler Seguin and Brenden Dillon.

Dallas outshot the Canadiens 32-28.

FIVE goals

After Brendan Gallagher's power-play goal made it 4-2, Dallas scored twice in 47 seconds: Tyler Seguin's 21st and one from downtown by defenceman Brenden Dillon.

Shades of Carolina, right?

Lars Eller went top shelft from an impossible angle for his 10th of the season and Max Pacioretty got his second of the game and 19th of the season into an empty net.

A bit of everything

Dallas rookie Valeri Nichushkin beat Carey Price on a penalty shot.

Then P.K. Subban, who had set up David Desharnais for the period's first goal, skated through the Dallas D to restore the Canadiens' lead with his seventh goal of the season.

P.K. has three points in the game.

Josh Gorges, who tripped Nichushkin to draw the penalty shot, also made two great plays with Carey Price down and out of position.

Shots were 12-10 for the Canadiens.

Max again

Max Pacioretty, who has four goals on this road trip, took a perfect lead pass from P.K. Subban and beat Kari Lehtonen with a wicked rising wrister for his 18th of the season.

Jamie Benn, converting a nice feed from Tyler Seguin for his 14th, had given the home team a 1-0 lead.

Shots were 11-6 for the Stars, who won an unreal 15 of 17 faceoffs.

The second half begins

The Canadiens start the homestretch – and 2014 portion – of their schedule with a visit to Dallas.

The American Airlines Center will be warmer than what the Leafs and Wings endured at the Big House on New Year's Day.

And it will be much warmer than Montreal, where the wind-chill factor hit minus-40C on Thursday.

Canadiens fans will just have to keep warm by yelling at their TV screens – which we did a lot of during the team's visits to Florida and Carolina.

Unless they meet in the Stanley Cup finals, this will be the final Canadiens-Stars game of the season. Dallas visited the Bell Centre on Oct. 29, when Carey Price made 26 saves and goals by Michaël Bournival and Rene Bourque secured a 2-1 win.

The Stars are 5-0-2 in their last seven, including two wins over the mighty L.A. Kings. Their offence is powered by Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn and ... Erik Cole! The former Canadien has five goals in his last eight games.

  1. Sportfan says:

Patches has 19 goals and 6 assists lol he’s on pace for about 35-40 goals and about I dunno TSN said 9 assists when he was at four so lets say 13 shades of Rick Nash. I say that cause in 2003-04 he had 41 goals and 16 assists.

  2. BCG says:

Man I love P.K. – all that talent and very good defense. All at the tender age of 24. Superstar. Despite the naysayers and fairweather fans like Boone who sees a need to point out when P.K. has a bad game, he’s obviously a major cornerstone like Price (who also has bad games).

We’re not a Stanley Cup team (unless we get lucky), but MB and TT are moving the team in the right direction. I get more excited with each passing year – and I hate what the NHL has become!

  3. Luke says:

Good game night folks! Pleasure to type with you all.(except you. You crossed the line).

Yah… I’ll probably check on later. Time to watch “chopped Canada ” and finish beersoes.

    They can score!

Price will get blamed for the blown lead but MT got out coached AGAIN

  14. bellcentre hotdog says:

    What a crazy game.

Somebody had posted earlier that the team had no character. That win tonight was ALL character. Dallas fought hard, yet the Habs fought back harder. Huge games for PK, Max, and Gallagher.

  15. JohnBellyful says:

That’s more like it. Exciting stuff.
Good bounce back after giving up two-goal lead.

  16. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

Victory Green, my arse. Good game for the Habbies. Hope White’s okay.

  17. HabinBurlington says:

Oklahoma beating Bama? Oh this night could get better!

  18. savethepuck says:

That is now 19 goals in 33 games for Max, but this team doesn’t have a goal scorer. I have to disagree.

  24. durocher says:

Great victory — contributions from a lot of players, and the compete level was as high. One of the best two periods from the Habs in a long, long time.

  59. The Teacher says:

Anyone else waiting for a shoe to drop?

  60. jmac21 says:

Come on you know how it works it’s always Price’s fault
Best goalie in the NHL and gets thrown under the bus by hab “fans” after every L

  61. WhatUp says:

Perhaps, in the spirit of the winter classic, these teams are engaged in a classic game of shinny. I can’t recall this many chances being exchanged this season. What a game. I have the feeling that there are more fireworks yet….

    Waiting patiently for #25

  66. sCOTT1243 says:

    dd, raise the dang puck!

Price hasn’t played bad, some of those shots were rockets as well as having 3 green shirts in front of him all night. He has been sliding back and forth a lot tonight similar to last year…glad to see the team scoring for him.

    Come on boys win this.

  67. DipsyDoodler says:

    Nice defensive play by PK.

  68. Et le but says:

Time to shorten the bench MT….

  69. Habbu says:

    Those damn curved sticks

  70. Gerry H says:

Did Price get his bell rung on the play that led to the penalty shot? He hasn’t been the same since. Losing pucks, flopping around, not on his game.

  71. The Teacher says:

    Wow lift it dude!

  72. --Habs-- says:

    Wow. A barn burner

“Habs” Watch and learn….! Or Not!
