Liveblog: Game 40 – Panthers claw Canadiens 4-1

PKFLA

Ugly loss

Any momentum the Canadiens may have had coming out of their Shootout win in Tampa bay was washed out to sea in Sunrise.

Brandon Prust brieflu made a game of it with a goal early the second period, after Dmitry Kulikov had given Florida a 1-0 lead in the first.

But Brian Campbell restored the Florida lead less than two minutes after Prust's goal.

And rookie Aleksander Markov made it 3-1 before the second period was over.

A Daniel Brière goal was questionably disallowed early in the third.

Sean Bergenheim scored an empty-netter with 17 seconds left.

Florida outshot the Canadiens 25-22.

Goal disallowed

Daniel Brière's goal, which might have made it interesting, was disallowed because of goaltender intyerference on Scott Clemmensen.

Bad call.

Alex Galchenyuk was pushed into the Florida goaltender by Marcel Goc.

Sean Bergenheim scored an empty-netter with 17 seconds left.

Barkov bags a pair

For two shifts early in the second period, the Canadiens looked to make a game of it.

Brandon Prust batted a loose puck past Scott Clemmensen to even the score at 1-1.

That lasted less than two minutes.

Brian Campbell blasted one past Peter Budaj to restore Florida's lead.

Aleksander Barkov made it 3-1 on a slick passing play, of which the Panthers had many.

Andrei Markov and Alexei Emelin have been on the ice for all three Florida goals.

Shots were 11-5 Florida.

Ugly.

Kulikov lone scorer

David Desharnais and Max Pacioretty had just screwed up an odd-man rush when the Panthers broke the other way to show how it's done.

Tomas Fleishmann fed a wide-open Dmitry Kulikov, who beat Peter Budaj for the only goal of the first period.

Florida outshot the Canadiens 8-7

Sunshine sweep?

It happened as recently as last season.

In back-to-back games on March 9-10, your Montreal Canadiens beat Tampa Bay 4-3 and Florida 5-2.

After Lars Eller's  goal and Carey Price's three saves in the Shootout secured two points in Tampa Saturday night, the Canadiens will get out their brooms for an unusual late-afternoon dance with the Panthers at the BB&T Center in Sunrise.

Florida has lost three in a row, but the Panthers held the Canadiens to 18 shots and won 2-1 when they visited the Bell Centre on Dec. 15.

Peter Budaj is scheduled to start against ... wait for it ... Tim Thomas.

No other lineup changes, meaning Douglas Murray, Michaël Bournival and George Parros are scratches.

The refs may have made bad calls but there is 60 minutes and they have to play them to win no matter what

  2. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

    Be ashamed, be very ashamed…

  3. TMan1969 says:

Markov is deflating…Patch is playing crap and well the rest of the team forgot they are a team….dammit

  4. epmck says:

Seriously sad looking Canadiens bench just now on TSN

    • Billyboy says:

Mt is an idiot. DD scores on a shootout, scores 1 goal and suddenly MT and the rds crew turned him into a star. What has he done lately? He gets more pp time than any other player. The EGG line was the only line doing any scoring in the first month or so, then had a couple bad games and MT changed the lines around so that the players need a program to know who they are playing with. Get The EGG line back together. Place Briere, DD, Bourke, Gionta in the press box and bring
Some kids down from Hamilton, they cannot do worse than those 4

  5. sirs81 says:

I have a feeling that MT has lost that room…

  6. danhabsfan says:

I don’t use this much, but the refs really cost the Habs this game. Is there no way that refs answer for the blunders they make? This should embarrass the NHL.

  7. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Okay, only one more thing to pull — the plug on this joke of team.

  8. The Puckhound says:

    Earth to Bervegin! Wake UP!

Go to the net and keep your stick on the ice!

  9. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

Yuck. Why do sh!t teams always beat good teams?

  10. Ring of Fire says:

Wow two losses in one month to mighty Panthers…..c’mon

    The Thin Blue Line.

  11. CH Marshall says:

clap clap clap bravo MT and your mediocrity

  12. Odie24 says:

Briere and Gionta on the ice, f**k me. WHY?????

  13. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Pull the other goalie too. won’t make any diff

  14. epmck says:

Chicago? The NFL – yeah pretty crazy

  15. adadi says:

There is no doubt that MT has to go…but keep in mind…this team needs many more horses to go all the way…MB needs to be better. Briere!!!…who will replace MT? Most coaches are mediocre at best. Paul Maurice?! Boucher!?

  16. Davey93 says:

Put galchenyuk on the ice for f@&k’ s sake!!

  17. Odie24 says:

Who’s surprised about Pacioretty? That’s his game; without the puck he’s lazy, soft, doesn’t compete, and doesn’t use his size efficiently. I’d trade him tomorrow…depending on the return of course.

  18. CH Marshall says:

and we don’t even use the one strength we have: skating and speed.

  19. TMan1969 says:

    Play better with only 4…

  20. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

    Pull Budaj NOW!!!

  21. Harditya says:

Same problem. No execution 5 on 5. Can’t score more than 1 goal. Can’t score on PP.

  22. duffy says:

    This fiasco is OVER ,

  23. HabsFanInSaintJohn says:

I tried very hard to stay off the “fire MT” bus…but….he has to go…he is completely useless…this is a complete result of bad coaching and its very apparent now…

  24. Habilis says:

What a gong show. Can we fire MT yet? And nobody gets to use our record as an excuse, that’s simply a product of us being in the East. We’re better than this. Or we could be, with a decent coach.

  25. habstrinifan says:

Remember how JM and PG seemed like they walked hand in hand. And then PG got fed up with JM.. started almost publicly questioning stuff. And remember how that ended?

I feel MB and MT are gonna get to that.

  26. TMan1969 says:

    BS call…

  27. danhabsfan says:

Why does MT look so confused, like he doesn’t know what to do. Not a good look.

  28. adadi says:

    Patches. Dumb and lazy.

  29. habfan01 says:

at least the Pats are winning

  30. Et le but says:

That should do it folks…embarrassing effort tonight

  31. CH Marshall says:

At least there’s a nice looking young lady behind MT

  32. Cdnman1 says:

    Lazy penalty.

  34. ffenliv says:

    Can’t score 5-on-5. Can’t score on the power-play. That’s pretty much just “can’t score.”

A month ago I was all in with the ‘trade for a piece or two’ group. Now? Not so much. I’m not usually a bandwagon guy, either. This team just has *nothing* going right now.

  35. TMan1969 says:

Bench Gionta…that would be a big sign that says WTF up!

  36. duffy says:

Molson needs to sign Moulson in the free agent signings ?

  37. The Puckhound says:

How terrible is Gionta??? He’s the captain and gone 25 games without a goal! Is playing with Plekenac one thing?

Go to the net and keep your stick on the ice!

  38. Davey93 says:

Brilliant therrien, just brilliant coaching. Galchenyuk and Eller did not see one minute on the powerplay.

  39. CHicoHab says:

Where are the Habs buying their sticks?? Styrofoam R Us

  40. MattZ says:

I don’t know if they are taking the Panthers lightly, but this lack of execution is pathetic… Not going to win many games when you can’t complete a 10 foot pass tape to tape!

  41. Plekasuares says:

    Lets always attack like this!!

  42. chfan4life says:

    pathetic pp

  43. Habcouver says:

Is the refereeing that bad where Prust’s has to point out that his stick is held before the call is made?
Seems to be quite a hate-on by officials for Habs.

    Waiting patiently for #25

  44. Adidess says:

A half-minute left on PP, with 8 minutes left in the game, MT wants Diaz and Bouillon out there to help mount the comeback. Nice!

  45. Cdnman1 says:

Their taking the point away. We need to press down low.

  46. RAM_TOUGH says:

Every team has now figured out the Montreal PP but MT & his crew. Force the two point players.

    Guts-Glory-Ram

  47. Adidess says:

    What is Markov doing?

  48. Davey93 says:

    Markov is looking awful tonight

  49. HabLou2 says:

I will say it again, trade Markov and Diaz, great return on them this year, bring up young guys, we cannot get deep in playoffs this year anyway

  50. CH Marshall says:

first order of business for MB is to trade Briere away, and re-insert Bournival back into this lineup.

  51. RAM_TOUGH says:

I went out for supper & came back to this!

No reason why Price couldn’t have played tonight!

    Guts-Glory-Ram

  52. Danno says:

The first disallowed goal was very questionable. The second disallowed goal is just tilting the game in favour of the Panthers.

NHL refs suck from head to toe.

Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs

  53. CHicoHab says:

No question a more spirited period.

  54. The_Truth says:

Habs have to score here if they have any chance

  55. Davey93 says:

Therrien please put the young kids on this pp!!

  56. Et le but says:

If we can bag one here…

  57. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

    Here comes the sucky PP.

  58. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

NHL hockey is now too fast for the on ice officials to do a good job officiating. There needs to be more replay, eye in the sky, etc. As bad as the NFL officiating is, there are ways to review plays. NHL looks very amateur.

  59. adadi says:

Seriously. How can the refs blow to goal calls in one game. Honestly both refs should be fined and suspended for 10 games.

  60. Storman says:

White has to throw that at the net

  61. Ktowner says:

I wonder if refs get together after games and review the video to assess their in game performance. If they do they certainly have lots of explaining to do.

  62. danhabsfan says:

You do realize that this should really be a 3-3 game right now

  63. The Jackal says:

To the geniuses saying Max sucks. He is on pace for 40+ goals. Quit sniffing glue or go cheer for the Leafs.

  64. Peter Young says:

The officials decided tonight’s result. I don’t often criticize the officiating, but this just stinks to high heaven.

  65. duffy says:

Why the hell does the NHL employ house league officials ?

  66. Cdnman1 says:

Another poor night by the zebras! NHL has the worst refs of any pro sport.

  67. The Jackal says:

Really need a coach’s challenge, what a bad call. These refs are terrible!

  68. Storman says:

This is how bad NHL officiating is, he was looking directly at it and still got it completely wrong

  69. Plekasuares says:

We can talk about the habs and how bad they are playing but this is a 3-3 hockey game if the refs were not so crap.

  70. Peter Young says:

That’s two goals we’ve been robbed of tonight.

  71. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

do refs look up at the replay on the scoreboard?

  72. Peter Young says:

TSN commentators get it right–Galchenyuk was pushed and Panthers got away with one.

  73. danhabsfan says:

Horrible call… Where is the TO centre Niall of this

  74. CHicoHab says:

    Clearly chucky pushed into goalie
