Liveblog: Game 40 – Panthers claw Canadiens 4-1

Ugly loss

Any momentum the Canadiens may have had coming out of their Shootout win in Tampa bay was washed out to sea in Sunrise.

Brandon Prust brieflu made a game of it with a goal early the second period, after Dmitry Kulikov had given Florida a 1-0 lead in the first.

But Brian Campbell restored the Florida lead less than two minutes after Prust's goal.

And rookie Aleksander Markov made it 3-1 before the second period was over.

A Daniel Brière goal was questionably disallowed early in the third.

Sean Bergenheim scored an empty-netter with 17 seconds left.

Florida outshot the Canadiens 25-22.

Goal disallowed

Daniel Brière's goal, which might have made it interesting, was disallowed because of goaltender intyerference on Scott Clemmensen.

Bad call.

Alex Galchenyuk was pushed into the Florida goaltender by Marcel Goc.

Sean Bergenheim scored an empty-netter with 17 seconds left.

Barkov bags a pair

For two shifts early in the second period, the Canadiens looked to make a game of it.

Brandon Prust batted a loose puck past Scott Clemmensen to even the score at 1-1.

That lasted less than two minutes.

Brian Campbell blasted one past Peter Budaj to restore Florida's lead.

Aleksander Barkov made it 3-1 on a slick passing play, of which the Panthers had many.

Andrei Markov and Alexei Emelin have been on the ice for all three Florida goals.

Shots were 11-5 Florida.

Kulikov lone scorer

David Desharnais and Max Pacioretty had just screwed up an odd-man rush when the Panthers broke the other way to show how it's done.

Tomas Fleishmann fed a wide-open Dmitry Kulikov, who beat Peter Budaj for the only goal of the first period.

Florida outshot the Canadiens 8-7

Sunshine sweep?

It happened as recently as last season.

In back-to-back games on March 9-10, your Montreal Canadiens beat Tampa Bay 4-3 and Florida 5-2.

After Lars Eller's  goal and Carey Price's three saves in the Shootout secured two points in Tampa Saturday night, the Canadiens will get out their brooms for an unusual late-afternoon dance with the Panthers at the BB&T Center in Sunrise.

Florida has lost three in a row, but the Panthers held the Canadiens to 18 shots and won 2-1 when they visited the Bell Centre on Dec. 15.

Peter Budaj is scheduled to start against ... wait for it ... Tim Thomas.

No other lineup changes, meaning Douglas Murray, Michaël Bournival and George Parros are scratches.

  1. red13am says:

Is it just me, or are there more Panthers jerseys on the bench than in the stands?

  2. Peter Young says:

“Big factor is the very good contract Bergevin got Max-Pact to sign, a bargain for a team.” That might well backfire if the player becomes unhappy that the contract does not match his performance.

  3. Storman says:

Pacioretty’s size and more importantly his cap friendly contract should make him un-tradeable…for the Habs…

  4. naweed235 says:

what’s with the RDS crew discussing a possible trade involving MaxPac? Our GM is surely not crazy enough to trade one of the only (if not the only) natural scorer on a team that desperately lacks a finishing touch on the forward lines right??? I mean if anything, we need a couple of more Pacioretty-like players in the line up to help the offense

  5. Plekasuares says:

Why all you canadians watch the NFL yet no nothing about where the players come from and where the football is much more entertaining. Yes give NCAA football a try

  6. rljmartin says:

    Anemic offense…
How about more TOI for the players who score more?… include Bourni here and finally….
Defense are almost NEVER up on the play, a must in today’s NHL.
Anybody else tired of seeing the puck dribble over the line of a vacated point?

  7. Harditya says:

Hoping Habs score more than 1 goal tonight. Offense has been M.I.A. for quite a while now.

  8. Hali_Hab says:

Hey Boone . It’s 21-14 for my second string chiefs over the ever annoying Phil rivers and the bolts at the half. How sweet it would be to boot SD from the playoffs with 9 of our starters sitting. Fingers crossed.

  9. On what planet do all three forwards leave the zone before we have control (Pleks, Gio, and Bork)? Morons!

Not rocket science boys, you’re losing to a bottom feeder who’s biggest name is the backup tonight.

Not sure how much more Bergevin needs to see to make an improvement for the playoffs, but this team needs a shakeup……Captain, you’re up! Bourque, you’re on deck!

    Yes it’s the beer talking.

  10. Arrow77 says:

Correct me if I’m wrong but Gallagher’s scoring woes started when he got moved with DD and Pacioretty, right? If that’s the case, wouldn’t that prove that DD and Pacioretty don’t need a scoring winger to produce. Why not put Prust with them and reunite the EGG line?

  11. FlyAngler says:

Say what you want about Bourque but if you are going to take an O zone penalty let it be for battling in front of the net. He was going to the net again when he put the one in that was nullified by the phantom high stick call. This is why he is on the PP- he has some skill AND he will go to the net- unlike any number of forwards on the roster……….

    “Elever le flambeau!…Raise the Torch!”

  12. Plekasuares says:

Man that was one frusterating period

  13. Danno says:

    Turkey hasn’t worn off yet

  14. slapshot777 says:

    Brutal defensive coverage there

  15. Storman says:

I think I will watch NFL primarily, check back with 10 minutes to go in the turd period, chances are it will still be 1-0

  16. NLhabsfan says:

He never touched that puck…call sucks

  17. danhabsfan says:

Make Bourque, Briere, DD as the 4th line, and bench them

  18. danhabsfan says:

Time to the EGG line together again

  19. slapshot777 says:

Blown call by the linsemen there

  20. piter says:

    Emelin looks lost today…

  21. Danno says:

Not getting the calls. Not getting the bounces…

Not liking the looks of this.

  22. munch17 says:

Gally has 2 goals and 2 assists in 17 games since he got Max and DD going.
Maybe MT could give the little guy a break and get him away from DD.

  23. DipsyDoodler says:

Weirdest TD of the year for Green Bay.

  24. Et le but says:

Would be ok if Budaj stopped playing the puck…Brodeur he is not

  25. danhabsfan says:

Notice the name Gallagher, how often he gets into the mix. Awesome!

  26. slapshot777 says:

8 minutes to play in the period and we have 6 shots

  27. CHicoHab says:

The last 8 games. Goals scored are12. With the shootout goal last night would be 13. At some point soon this should get addressed. Can’t keep winning 2-1 and 1-0. Can we????????

  28. Ghosts of the Forum says:

Good shifts after the goal. Emelin looks slow and awful

  29. Habilis says:

Better offensive presence so far, but as usual, zero finish. My kingdom for a goal scorer.

  30. danhabsfan says:

    I say Prust scores tonight

  31. Et le but says:

    Good push back shifts…

  32. slapshot777 says:

Another think is the Habs constantly take high risk low reward shots like the one Max Pac too and he missed the net giving Florida an easy out

  33. slapshot777 says:

Emelin had a man Markov had a man and Max Pac and DD floated black while the Florida d-man bolted up the ice and scored.

  34. slapshot777 says:

That was Desharnais man to pick up instead he floated back.

  35. WVHabsfan says:

We are not going to lose two in a row to Florida

  36. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

Not good. Lots of blame to go around on that one.

  37. Danno says:

That penalty on Bork… How come Gallagher is constantly cross checked from behind and there is never a penalty for the same infraction?

  38. Storman says:

    Markov not great there

  39. Arrow77 says:

It’s really amazing to me that we have no true first powerplay unit. We have a defense pair and that’s it.

  40. jols101 says:

Patches needs to hit the f’n net.

  41. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

I like Ryan White. Always gives it his all. Also… Budaj as a puck-handler = eek! And… Bourque! WTF?

  42. CHicoHab says:

    Bs call on Bork

  43. danhabsfan says:

    Wow… That’s a penalty call… Weak call

  44. Harditya says:

    Bourque is trash. Absolutely useless.

  45. habfan01 says:

Florida announcers can’t tell the difference between defenseman and forwards. Markov won a faceoff.

  46. danhabsfan says:

An early one here would be great!

  47. Et le but says:

    Door opens…

  48. Storman says:

Boone take your sun glasses off

  49. danhabsfan says:

All. Little sloppy in the Habs end so far

  50. db says:

Crazy about Schumacher, he was even wearing a helmet when he hit his head on a rock. They did mention he was awake when taken to hospital though…

  51. Et le but says:

Feeling cautiously optimistic about this one…3-1 Habs

  52. ABHabsfan says:

good to see Whitey still in the line-up. He needs to be in every game

  53. RAM_TOUGH says:

Why in the Puck isn’t Mr. Floppy playing?

  54. Plekasuares says:

Ok lets talk real football: stanford vs msu, auburn vs fsu. I got stanford and fsu

  55. ABHabsfan says:

    Jay Cutler=Jeff George

  56. TorontoHabsFan says:

    Hey All,

Haven’t been around in a while, was wonderin’ what the consensus was as to why neither Tinordi nor Beaulieu are with the big team?

  57. Peter Young says:

At least Liverpool are playing far better than Manchester United this season, Mike. I’m from the generation of United fans who hold no grudge against Liverpool, and I would prefer any team from the North to take the title over teams from London, so I was hoping Liverpool would at least draw today.

  58. Castor says:

I can’t…I can’t… Biere in and Bournival out just so MB doesn’t look bad benching a crappy contract.

  59. Davey93 says:

Does anyone know if Murray is in tonight? Why not try a Murray-Bouillon tandem. Diaz doesn’t really bring much to the table anyways

  60. Mondou6 says:

Ok, gentlemen, I’ve brewed myself a Bulleit rye Manhattan. It’s going down pretty easy.

Go Habs, Pats, Pack, and Chargers. :)

  61. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

What the swear word is going on? A 5:00 pm start time for a hockey game? Do they have to get the Sunrise Auditorium prepped for a 9:00 Holidays on Ice show?

Didn’t your avatar used to be Tony Espo?
    What’s the story?

  63. I just picked up 32 cans of coors light, it’s the only way I see enjoying this game. Should make for some interesting comments later on. I apologize to you all in advance. I drink maybe three times a year and no I am not drinking them all myself, I have some friends coming over to watch.

Budja will have to stop 38 of 39 shots for us to win.

    bah humbug

    Habs 6
    Cats 1

Timmy Thomas will get pulled, and Galchenyuk and Eller combine for 6 points.

  66. Feraco says:

    Boone what are you Rollin?

  67. ooder says:

so yesterday the oilers lost again.. yakupov played a bit over 8 minutes.. the only other player that played less is gadzic.
i get he is not perfect but what is so bad about him that keeps getting him benched?

  69. JohnBellyful says:

Why we should remain optimistic (a hockey outsider’s perspective, drawn from the pages of The Atlantic:

“True, the online world of comments and commentary skews towards the negative, especially in the realm of economics and politics [and hockey talk]. People are more likely to express feelings based on disagreement and a sense of outrage than they are to react based on concord. Anger is a hot experience that triggers action; agreement, even strong agreement, tends to be a more passive reaction.”

“Optimism, as the theoretical physicist David Deutsch so brilliantly describes in The Beginnings of Infinity, doesn’t mean surety about good future outcomes. Optimism is simply the certainty that any human progress to date has been a product of our collective ability to understand how things work and to craft solutions. The conviction that the present is a prelude to a bad future negates that collective ability. Yes, we may indeed be at the end of the line, but by angrily dismissing optimistic arguments we are likely to fail more rapidly. Why bother striving for constructive change if you firmly reject the possibility? That leaves only one viable alternative: to envision a path forward. That path may not materialize, but striving to find it is a vital component of creating the future we dream about, and not the one that we fear.”

I’m watching ep. 3 right now. Boy, I cannot believe the Laffs would go to such great lengths in signing a retard like David Clarkson. I mean, for a stupid water bottle knocked on the ground, he’s going to argue with Todd Bertuzzi about it!

  71. Habilis says:

Dissapointed about Bournival sitting, but that’s why I’m not the coach.

FYI, for anyone who is interested, there is a link up of yesterday’s HBO 24/7 series, complete with all the bad words.

It won’t be up for too long, the previous episodes got removed after a few days. Enjoy.

  77. Peter Young says:

The same old reasons. They haven’t been liked since year dot.

  78. etcheverry92 says:

Wow, Eastern, you are in a foul mood. Tell me, were you in a foul mood last year, when an Ottawa goal was disallowed because Silfverberg had “interefered” with Carey Price, this according to Habs’ fan Brian Pochemara? Actually, Silfverberg was never in Price’s crease. How about a couple of weeks ago, when John Taveras was run from behind by Eller and roughed up by Markov. The eagle-eyed Pochemara nailed Taveras for “holding the stick”.

Were you in a foul mood after a PK Subban slewfoot went uncalled, handing Montreal 2 points in Jersey? And how about in Nashville, when an uncalled DD slewfoot in overtime gave the Habs the extra point. Bet you thought it was a great play.

The officiating in the NHL is terrible, but the Canadiens have generally been the beneficiaries. Today, the hockey Gods finally caught up with them, with the bad call by Frederic L’Ecuyer. The truth is: the Canadiens are a very ordinary team with a great goaltender. Ordinary teams have won Stanley Cups before, and I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Carey Price carries them to number 25. HE is that good.

  79. slapshot777 says:

You must be smoking go stuff there, because Eller never did hit Tavares from behnid so if your going to state a fact or bitch on someone get your own facts straight. Eller laid a clean hit on John Tavares when he came around from behind the net with his head down. After the game Tavares even said so himself.

  80. D Mex says:

    Is that you, b00ne ?

    ALWAYS Habs -
    D Mex

  81. etcheverry92 says:

Slapshot, first of all, Eller’s hit on Tavares was a head shot on an unsuspecting player. Somebody on the Islanders should have jumped and pounded Eller. Secondly, the hit from behind to which I referred, took place in the second period and at the same time that Markov roughed up Taveras. Amazingly, Taveras got the only penalty on the sequence. I’ll have whatever you’re smoking.
