Liveblog: Game 39 – Canadiens win 2-1 in Shootout

Lousy game, but a W is a W

Lars Eller scored the only goal of the Shootout, and Carey Price made saves on Valtteri Filppula, Nikita Kucherov and Teddy Purcell to secure two points.

Tomas Plekanec's 13th of the season and the great Martin St. Louis's 17th – both scored in the second period – were the only goals through 65 minutes.

Carey Price made 23 saves, Ben Bishop 20.

Eller! Price!!

On to the Shootout:

Filppula: Glove save

Eller: Goal!

Kuchherov: Leg save

DD: High shot

Purcell: SAVE!

Home team surges

No scoring in the third period, but Tampa bay outshout the Canadiens 14-6.

Carey Price was particularly hot during a TB power play.

On to OT.

Finally, some goals

Tomas Plekanec put the Canadiens on the board with his 13th of the season, a shot that snuck in under Ben Bishop's arm.

The lead lasted less than six minutes before Martin St. Louis – who else – snapped one between Carey Price and the post.

Shots were 8-6 Canadiens.

Power plays for both teams have struggled.

Max hurt

Max Pacioretty took an errant puck to the face and did not return from the clinic.

The home team took 11 minutes to get a shot on goal and ended up at the short end of a 7-3 shot total.

Three power plays – two by the Canadiens – were impotent.

Alex Galchenyuk had the best scoring chance but was foiled by a backchecking Martin St. Louis.

A genuine four-pointer

Your Montreal Canadiens return from their six-day Christmas break to face an Atlantic Division rival.

No, not Boston, Toronto, Ottawa, Detroit or Buffalo – all cities clutched in the icy grip of winter.

The Tampa Bay Lightning don't drive through snow drifts to get to their practice rink.

Like the Florida Panthers, whom the Canadiens play on Sunday, the Lightning are the warm-weather rivals of the aforementioned cold-weather cities.

And the Lightning have been hot on the ice.

They sit second in the Atlantic behind Boston and two points ahead of the Canadiens. And the Lightning ride a five-game winning streak into the Saturday showdown.

In this season's previous meeting, Nov. 12 at the Bell Centre, Carey Price made 44 saves – including six in OT – but Valtteri Filppula secured a 2-1 Lightning win by scoring the only goal in the Shootout. Beanpole Ben Bishop stopped 28 of 29 Canadiens shots through 65 minutes and all three Shootout attempts.

Puck drops 7:10ish.

    Moen with the drag!

  7. HabinBurlington says:

Moen with a toe drag slower than a dripping faucet!

  8. Mondou6 says:

Max loves to take those penalties.

  9. Plekasuares says:

    Cmon another kill!

  10. HabinBurlington says:

Big penalty kill here, not a good penalty by Max.

  11. Et le but says:

    IMPORTANT kill here

  12. db says:

What is Cole saying… delayed call? And not one official had his hand up

  13. twilighthours says:

    Eller can be so infuriating.

  14. twilighthours says:

Can you imagine how good this team would be if it could win?

  15. Samovich says:

    Gudas looks like Homer Simpson

  16. db says:

Ouf I hate the dump and chase…

  17. duffy says:

Can someone tell me why CBC needs five talking heads on the intermission ?

  18. Et le but says:

Boring as hell but the Habs are actually playing a good road game against a very hot team who they trail in the standings.

  19. frontenac1 says:

Whitey sends Gudas to the dressing room.

  20. Mondou6 says:

“Next one wins it”…And the “next one” will likely be in a shoot out.

  21. HABitat4humanity says:

Habs need traffic in front of Bishop

  22. durocher says:

That was a nasty shootout goal to win it for CZE

  23. RAM_TOUGH says:

Not putting Fucale in net today cost Canada a win!

  24. Plekasuares says:

Cherry would not like how those kids in the WJHC celebrate

  25. HabinBurlington says:

Is the CBC song search for the song they play when they finish broadcasting the last game that will mean anything to that network at the end of this season?

  26. HabinBurlington says:

I see PJ has worked on his counting skills, even held up the right amount of fingers when he counted to three Bruin Dmen injured.

  27. Mondou6 says:

This is fairly typical…We’re outplaying the other team, fairly significantly, but we have no goal scorers or finishers, so it’s a nail biter game that will come down to a lucky bounce.

  28. Plekasuares says:

    Bourque is playing well tonight

  29. B says:

Charlottetown captain Nevins with a goal (14th) and an assist in a 4-0 win.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  30. Storman says:

Hockey after short Christmas break very Bad I have farted better scoring chances, Hockey after long Olympic Break will be best watched from sitting on the throne.

  31. munch17 says:

Galchenyuk is our third leading scorer and gets no power play time.
    Hard to figure out

  32. The Jackal says:

C’mon guys, it’s a tie game and we are playing better than TB.
What’s with the tired spit of PK/Yzerman not liking what he sees, the Habs being bad, MB, etc. – I’d hate to see this site when we lose! Oh… wait a second, no I don’t because it’s unbearable. Don’t make it unbearable during a tie game either.

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  33. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

White sold that. S’okay, as the Subban penalty should have come with a diving cancellation.

  34. twilighthours says:

I actually like Bork but there is no sense in putting him on the PP.

(Cue Stevereno with some silly piece of data)

  35. db says:

I can’t think of another team that would play Bouillon onthe PP..

  36. Samovich says:

I don’t think G. Galley and Bob Cole will be wearing Rogers Jackets next year

  37. VancouverHab says:

Who the Hell was that losing the beautiful Subban stretch pass at the Bolts’ blueline?

  38. danhabsfan says:

This power play is missing the “power”

  39. db says:

Did we get a shot on the PP yet?

  40. DipsyDoodler says:

    Quiz time.

Who signed Martin St.Louis when no one wanted him?

    Yep. Rick Dudley.

  41. RAM_TOUGH says:

    Oh goodie another Montreal PP

  42. Mondou6 says:

Galley calling for “embellishment” on Montreal there.

  43. Samovich says:

a bit of a sell job

  44. Plekasuares says:

    Ryan White is Awesome!

  45. RAM_TOUGH says:

I can’t see Montreal putting another puck past Bishop

  46. VancouverHab says:

GREAT Eller backcheck, and then a miserable loss by Briere….

  47. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

HNIC will be utterly disappointed if the Habs win. Why is that?

  48. Reflektor says:

Is Bishop making the US Oly team?

  49. Adidess says:

PK and Gorges seemed to have missed a couple of shifts following the goal. Didn’t think they did much wrong there.

  50. Habitant in Surrey says:

…this to the ol’ Gubers among da Commentariat

…wouldn’t Martin St. Louis have made the ‘perfect’ Hab ?

…excuse Me as I grovel for da Good Ol’ Dayz

  51. Danno says:

How the hell is Diana Phanoof worth $7M for seven years? Marc Bergevin is going to have to hand PK the keys to the CH vault to sign him.

  52. danhabsfan says:

    This is a lousy game

  53. DipsyDoodler says:

    Perfect pass by PK.

  54. Plekasuares says:

Subban not making a case for himself

  55. Mondou6 says:

Wow, Cole sounds a LOT more excited about the TB goal. He just woke up, soiled his Depends, and has been shouting non-stop praise about St. Louis.

When Plex scored, it was: “Goal.” Then silence.

  56. Odie24 says:

Turnover at centre on a soft ass play by Eller, who was afraid of getting hit. Result? Tampa goal.

  57. Dunboyne Mike says:

    I like our forwards.

However, we don’t have anyone like MSL. (In stature yes; gifts, no.)

    What a goal.

    Bah. Humbug.

  58. Storman says:

LOL Bob Cole must have a home in Tampa he is super excited should check his depends, oops he crapped his pants

  59. RAM_TOUGH says:

Price was sh!t on that shot!

  60. DipsyDoodler says:

Eller turnover. Hate to say it but he just isn’t panning out.

  61. slapshot777 says:

What is that sound a sick cow

  62. Plekasuares says:

Scouting report on price: shoot high and its a goal

  63. Cape Breton says:

Hate to say it but Price didn’t know he had it.

  64. aroma says:

RDS stream is molasses slow, so I’m stuck with HNIC. I lost count of how many times Cole/Galley commented on how “nothing is going on” in the game. Frankly, I didn’t notice at first it was HNIC (somehow not recognizing Cole’s dulcet tones) and assumed it was the Bolts’ broadcasting team. Shameful to assign such a Leaf homer to Habs games – he can’t even get the players right, calling White Desharnais… oh well, mediocracy reigns supreme…

  65. duffy says:

Somebody tell Emelin they still allow hitting !

  66. db says:

Anybody else see Silva winning his title back tonight?

  67. Danno says:

Enjoying this game very much in the new recliner Santa (my sweety) got me for Xmas

    So,what happened to Patches?
For a moment there,I thought he might have been traded between periods.

  69. VancouverHab says:

“Cherry is all over Yakupov. The usual xenophobic crap.”

Nearly the entire NHL hockey world–including many in Edmonton–are presently “all over” Nail ‘minus 25’ Yakupov, but Don Cherry adds his own identical criticisms and his are somehow “xenophobic”.

Between these two,Don Cherry is not the bigot….

  70. slapshot777 says:

I think every play by play man and colour man has a grudge against the Habs never anything good to say only negative.

  71. twilighthours says:

Bad call on that Hedman offside.

  72. ABHabsfan says:

1 handed tap with the stick and buddy pulls a triple-lutz. Brutal
