Liveblog: Game 39 – Canadiens win 2-1 in Shootout

GiontaJump

Lousy game, but a W is a W

Lars Eller scored the only goal of the Shootout, and Carey Price made saves on Valtteri Filppula, Nikita Kucherov and Teddy Purcell to secure two points.

Tomas Plekanec's 13th of the season and the great Martin St. Louis's 17th – both scored in the second period – were the only goals through 65 minutes.

Carey Price made 23 saves, Ben Bishop 20.

Eller! Price!!

On to the Shootout:

Filppula: Glove save

Eller: Goal!

Kuchherov: Leg save

DD: High shot

Purcell: SAVE!

Gallagher

Home team surges

No scoring in the third period, but Tampa bay outshout the Canadiens 14-6.

Carey Price was particularly hot during a TB power play.

On to OT.

Finally, some goals

Tomas Plekanec put the Canadiens on the board with his 13th of the season, a shot that snuck in under Ben Bishop's arm.

The lead lasted less than six minutes before Martin St. Louis – who else – snapped one between Carey Price and the post.

Shots were 8-6 Canadiens.

Power plays for both teams have struggled.

Max hurt

Max Pacioretty took an errant puck to the face and did not return from the clinic.

The home team took 11 minutes to get a shot on goal and ended up at the short end of a 7-3 shot total.

Three power plays – two by the Canadiens – were impotent.

Alex Galchenyuk had the best scoring chance but was foiled by a backchecking Martin St. Louis.

A genuine four-pointer

Your Montreal Canadiens return from their six-day Christmas break to face an Atlantic Division rival.

No, not Boston, Toronto, Ottawa, Detroit or Buffalo – all cities clutched in the icy grip of winter.

The Tampa Bay Lightning don't drive through snow drifts to get to their practice rink.

Like the Florida Panthers, whom the Canadiens play on Sunday, the Lightning are the warm-weather rivals of the aforementioned cold-weather cities.

And the Lightning have been hot on the ice.

They sit second in the Atlantic behind Boston and two points ahead of the Canadiens. And the Lightning ride a five-game winning streak into the Saturday showdown.

In this season's previous meeting, Nov. 12 at the Bell Centre, Carey Price made 44 saves – including six in OT – but Valtteri Filppula secured a 2-1 Lightning win by scoring the only goal in the Shootout. Beanpole Ben Bishop stopped 28 of 29 Canadiens shots through 65 minutes and all three Shootout attempts.

Puck drops 7:10ish.

Check back later for live game blogging.

Phaneuf isn’t a bad defenceman. He plays 24-25 minutes a night against the opposition’s best players. He’s a plus 10 on a team that has terrible team defense. He’s 6’3″ and physical. And he make his share of gaffes.

    Quick Hockey Canada rant:

Why does this country’s coaching staff have an inexplicable need to play the older goalie in every possible situation?

Maybe I’m biased. OK, I’m definitely biased, but Fucale still should have been the guy in this tourney. Everybody was naming him the starter prior to the tourney. Then Sutter goes with his gut or whatever, and we get lit up.

It’s that same dinosaur mentality that had Roy starting over Brodeur in ’02 and Brodeur starting over Luongo in ’10. The same asinine mentality that has P.K. Subban as a “bubble” player. Ridiculous.

And this time around, how much do you want to bet that Luongo will get the benefit of the doubt and the first start in Sochi, despite the fact that Price is obviously better right now?

The best players should play. Coaches who try and over-complicate that recipe usually end up in front of a sea of microphones, explaining losses.

Can the Blues vaunted D hold back the Hawks tonight?

    • frontenac1 says:

No, I think shoving the Ref to the ice is ok in international hockey. He got 2min. If you drop a guy after getting speared, you get tossed for the tourney.

  66. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

I have a good feeling about tonite’s game. A neighbour who moved a few streets over from us lost their cat three weeks ago. He turned up on our back deck this morning. Now he’s back home, warm and fed. Kind of a miracle considering how cold it’s been in Ottawa lately. So I expect the miracles to continue in Tampa. Habs win 3-2.

  71. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Bruins just got “Emelin-ed”. Good luck replacing Seidenberg. If the Habs stay healthy, they can compete against anyone in the East with the injuries other teams are incurring. As much as many of us would like to see a major trade or player dumps, it probably will not be necessary this season.

    • Habfan10912 says:

Agree. Sometimes a big part of a successful season in all sports us staying healthy. The NHL has become very similar to the NFL in that way. Solid post.

    • ABHabsfan says:

Current players that are not in the future plans of the club should be traded as opposed to let walk for nothing. Also all other teams in the East who are in the play-off picture will work to make their clubs better, if the Habs do nothing they may as well be going backwards. Just because a rival had a major setback, you still have to improve and manage correctly.

      • DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Upcoming UFAs…I agree. If I had to pick one that will be dealt, it would be Diaz. Other teams will work to improve, but good luck this year with this cap. The Bruins can not replace Seidenberg as much as they can try.

  72. HabinBurlington says:

Another player out with a concussion, this time St. Louis Blues Alex Steen. If memory serves me right this isn’t his first one, seem to recall a few years back he had one.

Re-post from end of previous thread.

What do Ondrei Palak, J.T. Brown, Tyler Johnson, Nikita Kucherov, Radko Gudas, Andrej Sustr, Dmitry Korabov and Mark Barberio all have in common?

They are all rookies who will be in the Tampa Bay Lightning line-up tonight.

Believe it or not, but Tampa has gone 12-7 since losing Steven Stamkos to LTIR. Ben Bishop (28/20/5/2/1.93/.935) for Cory Conacher (38/3/6/9) has to be the trade of the year so far.

Is there any doubt that right now Jon Cooper has to be the lead candidate for coach of the year?
