Liveblog: Game 38 – Canadiens blow 3-0 lead but DD wins it in OT

It would have been a long flight home

The tornado warning in Nashville did not, ultimately, apply to the Canadiens' room.

David Desharnais' spectacular Overtime goal saved his team from the ignominy of blowing a 3-0 lead in Nashville.

Tornados or not, the Canadiens ought to fly out of there before the cops arrive to investigate theft of two points.

The Canadiens were outshot 34-23.

David Desharnais stripped the Nashville defenceman and beat Carter Hutton with a laser to secure two points the Canadiens probably didn't deserve.

Lead blown

P.K. Subban was in the penalty box when Patrik Hornqvist bashed Andrei Markov into the boards behind Carey Price.

Mike Fisher got the puck and fed Nick Shea Weber for the tying goal.

Total domination

Leading 3-0, the Canadiens were outshot 20-6 in the second period.

Nashville got goals from Gabriel Bourque and, on a power-play, Nick Spaling to set up a very nervous third period.

Douglas Murray was on for both Nashville goals, screwing up a Carey Price clearing attempt on the second.

Michel Therrien may set a record for f-bombs.

Early explosion

The Canadiens had not scored a first-period goal since Dec. 2 in New Jersey.

They got three in Nashville.

In three minutes, seven seconds. On three consecutive SoG.

P.K. Subban got it started with his fifth ... and first in 11 games.

Max Pacioretty's 15th – on a brilliant head-man pass by Brendan Gallagher –  and Tomas Plekanec's 12th (tipping in Brian Gionta's shot) completed the surge ... and ended the night for goaltender Marek Mazarec, beaten on three of five shots.

Carey Price made sevensaves and was helped by his goalposts, which Viktor Stalberg hit twice.

Ho-ho-home soon

Saturday night in Nashville, the Canadiens will play their last game before a nice long Christmas break.

After flying back to Montreal, the team is idle until Dec. 28, when they begin a Florida swing in Tampa Bay.

The Canadiens will be trying to get back on the winning track after that stomping in St.Louis.

Francis Bouillon, who played three seasons in Nashville, returns to the lineup against the Predators.

Daniel Brière – who watched Thursday's game from the pressbox, whence he could observe it helps to be as tall as Patrik Berglund – will also draw in.

Thank you Mr. Boone for the Merry Christmas 😀 I hate happy holidays haha

  2. 123456 says:

for everyone taking about the habs blowing leads – they are 19-0-2 when leading after 2. . . . . that’s actually not too shabby.

best of luck to those in habs land to avoid the ice storm

  3. Storman says:

Merry Christmas to all my HIO friends, All I want is my toothache abscess dilemma to end, A Team Canada which includes PK, Price and a Gold Medal , and finally for the Habs to have a late 1st round pick next year.

  4. Timo says:

All you folks wishing merry xmas and stuff. It’s not like you won’t be here before the xmas eve. You know you will… but Merry Christmas to you too. Even Boone (even though he’s jewish) 🙂

  5. Lafleurguy says:

Unpopular player wins the game. Top shelf where Habs don’t usually put it. More criticism than praise so far. Team is not among the elite, so where’s the beef?

“May you live in interesting times.”

  6. Sportfan says:

    Lol thanks Davey

  7. The Jackal says:

    Great win by the Habs.
Sad to see some posters still standing at the edge of the cliff, but don’t worry, the bandwagon has infinite space, because the Habs are that awesome.

Three first period goals? I’ll take that.
Great start on the road, unfortunately they couldn’t score a fourth early but what more do you want? It’s not as if the home team is just gonna call it a night. It’s natural and actually a common and sound strategy to just play smart and protect the lead on the road. Taking chances and opening up the game just energizes the home team. The Habs are at the end of a tough schedule and they are spent. Even throughout this “slump” they’ve still been alright. We have a very good record going into the holiday break and we are full value for it.

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  8. Mondou6 says:

There was some confusion about Markov being on the ice at the end, so I’ll clarify things…

    – Markov was blind-side cross-checked into the boards, no penalty was called.

    – He complained, so he was thrown out of the game.

    – Even though he was thrown out of the game, there was no penalty called. You can be ejected without any sort of penalty, because, well, that’s just the way it is.

    – Even though he was thrown out of the game, he’s allowed by rule to come back for OT, because, again, that’s how the rules work.

    – Once DD tripped a player (not a penalty, because, again, you know…) to score the game winner, Markov can be out there legally.

In a nutshell, Markov was legally on the ice after being thrown out of the game for arguing an obvious penalty, resulting in no penalty, after DD wasn’t called for an obvious penalty.

See? The NHL rules make sense once you explain them logically.

    • Arnou Ruelle says:

Is there any discussion for a coaches’ challenge implementation soon? Because right now, refs. just don’t know the difference between a good call and a bad call!

    • FlyAngler says:

Markov received a 10 minute misconduct with about 6 minutes left in regulation. He would have been eligible to play in the last minute of the five minute overtime since his penalty would have been over.

      “Elever le flambeau!…Raise the Torch!”

  9. punkster says:

Enjoy the festivities of the season folks.

Catch you all on the 28th.

  10. Arnou Ruelle says:

That was a gutsy win. 2nd OT goal from the dynamic duo of this team.

3 things I’m not happy with:

    (a) Like I said before, they have got to STOP blowing leads! The Habs have this sickness for too long and MT has to put an end to this!

    (b) Bench Diaz! This guy is just as lost like Gorges.

    (c) Refs. are making mistakes again. WTF did Markov do to get a 10-minute penalty? It does not make any sense?? Desharnais did a tripping penalty but manage to move quickly to get that goal. But with Markov getting a penalty, I just don’t get it!

Hopefully, Seth Jones is ok. He can possibly make the U.S. Olympic team.

  11. DipsyDoodler says:

When the pen to Subban was incorrectly called the Prdes had 2 shots on goal in 13 minutes. Then they scored on blatant non call.

We had one very bad period but we were good for the rest of the game.

  12. Peter Young says:

Got up at 4 a.m. to watch Mike Boone’s Liverpool play in English football, took a nap this afternoon and overslept, missing the first period. When I tuned in, it was 3-0 for the CH, and when the Preds came all the way back, I figured I was carrying bad luck for the CH. But the formerly useless David Desharnais saved my bacon and the CH’s in overtime once again. Season’s greetings to all of you. May the Christmas break be good for our team.

  13. FlyAngler says:

A little something to celebrate the season and put the Habs win in proper perspective…..

    Merry Christmas to all!

    “Elever le flambeau!…Raise the Torch!”

  15. RAM_TOUGH says:

The win tonight was brought to you by CAREY PRICE.

  16. The Dude says:

What, tornado a coming…yo M.B. Tie down our Lil fellers.

  17. habstrinifan says:

OK! Let’s get serious for 1 minute.

This game showed, in my opinion, you bite the bullet and bring up one of the kid defencemen ride out whatever happens. I think Pateyrn is playing the best lately.

And then you look for any help up front using one of the current D’s in a package.

Splitting Markov and Subban (I know cause Gorges was ill) just weakens the entire D too much.

  18. Mavid says:

Merry Christmas everyone..I cannot tell you how excited I am for my first Christmas with my precious granddaughter..I only bought a few things..really just a few..hope you all enjoy this time with your family

  22. AliHaba says:

Hey Mike I shouldn’t be nitpicking being Christmas and all but the Tampa game is the 28th not the 27th as you said. I know you’re having a few and it’s Christmas but we need to have the facts, right? Anyway Merry Christmas and thanks for this tremendous site.

  23. habstrinifan says:

“He was chewing Juicy Fruit gum, I didn’t know whether to shake his hand or kiss him”

  48. durocher says:

No shots, hits, or blocked shots for Briere or Diaz. It’s one thing to be small, it’s another to not contribute.

  49. Habbu says:

DD decided to give it his all and look what happens……but looking back at it all…. I feel some disappointment. Where is that kind of effort from others?

  50. chfan4life says:

Stole 2 pt tonite. Let’s hope Santa brings the Habs good gifts.

  51. Timo says:

  54. Plekasuares says:

Frank needs to play more btw. He played well

  55. FlyAngler says:

DD redeemed himself but he needed to since his brain dead penalty in the o zone helped the Preds get back in the game. Good for him. I still loathe M T’s gross partiality to certain players.

    “Elever le flambeau!…Raise the Torch!”

  56. danhabsfan says:

I’ll take that, but it was horrible. Now he the leafs lose in the s/o. Merry Christmas everyone

  57. Cdnman1 says:

These guys need a rest. Merry Christmas!

  58. slapshot777 says:

The main thing is we got the two points who cares about the loser point to Nashville it doesn’t affect out division or conference

  59. RAM_TOUGH says:

Nothing to be happy about in my books. Pathetic is what it was.

The Habs coming off the ice & 90% of then not even acknowledging the Habs fans with outstretched hands. Shameful FKers …

  60. The Dude says:

    I can’t wait for Timo’s post…

  61. Rudy says:

Talk about ironic. Missed calls lead to goals, Narry not so happy about it when it happens to his team
