Liveblog: Game 38 – Canadiens blow 3-0 lead but DD wins it in OT

Pleks-Weber

It would have been a long flight home

The tornado warning in Nashville did not, ultimately, apply to the Canadiens' room.

David Desharnais' spectacular Overtime goal saved his team from the ignominy of blowing a 3-0 lead in Nashville.

Tornados or not, the Canadiens ought to fly out of there before the cops arrive to investigate theft of two points.

The Canadiens were outshot 34-23.

DD!

David Desharnais stripped the Nashville defenceman and beat Carter Hutton with a laser to secure two points the Canadiens probably didn't deserve.

Lead blown

P.K. Subban was in the penalty box when Patrik Hornqvist bashed Andrei Markov into the boards behind Carey Price.

Mike Fisher got the puck and fed Nick Shea Weber for the tying goal.

Total domination

Leading 3-0, the Canadiens were outshot 20-6 in the second period.

Nashville got goals from Gabriel Bourque and, on a power-play, Nick Spaling to set up a very nervous third period.

Douglas Murray was on for both Nashville goals, screwing up a Carey Price clearing attempt on the second.

Michel Therrien may set a record for f-bombs.

Early explosion

The Canadiens had not scored a first-period goal since Dec. 2 in New Jersey.

They got three in Nashville.

In three minutes, seven seconds. On three consecutive SoG.

P.K. Subban got it started with his fifth ... and first in 11 games.

Max Pacioretty's 15th – on a brilliant head-man pass by Brendan Gallagher –  and Tomas Plekanec's 12th (tipping in Brian Gionta's shot) completed the surge ... and ended the night for goaltender Marek Mazarec, beaten on three of five shots.

Carey Price made sevensaves and was helped by his goalposts, which Viktor Stalberg hit twice.

Ho-ho-home soon

Saturday night in Nashville, the Canadiens will play their last game before a nice long Christmas break.

After flying back to Montreal, the team is idle until Dec. 28, when they begin a Florida swing in Tampa Bay.

The Canadiens will be trying to get back on the winning track after that stomping in St.Louis.

Francis Bouillon, who played three seasons in Nashville, returns to the lineup against the Predators.

Daniel Brière – who watched Thursday's game from the pressbox, whence he could observe it helps to be as tall as Patrik Berglund – will also draw in.

With respect to “the stat,” of the current Habs 5’9″ or under:
Gio – should not be re-signed

Cube – should not be re-signed
Briere – should be traded (MB should eat some of that salary to get him elsewhere else) or waived
    Gally – not going anywhere
DD – trade if possible, tolerate so long as Max is producing

RDS is devoting part its daytime programming Dec. 25 to CHristmas movies:

White Christmas – Canadiens’ fourth-line centre goes home for the holidays, where he’s treated first-class.

The Nightmare Before Christmas – Canadiens’ swoon before Christmas break sends legions of fans into the depths of despair.

Elf – Inspirational tale of an undersized hockey player who overcomes all odds to earn a spot on the Montreal roster, to the delight of Hab fans everywhere. And then the team extends his contract four years.

It’s A Wonderful Life – MT, in a deep funk over the team’s recent lacklustre play, ponders what to do as he leans over a bridge’s railing looking down at the raging water. Clarence the second-class angel suddenly appears and together they watch as life would have unfolded without MT behind the bench of the NHL’s most storied franchise. The film ends with Clarence pushing MT off the bridge, earning his wings.

Ottawa proves how difficult it is to build a team. They were pretty impressive last year with injuries and not this year with a more healthy squad. Maybe there’s no smooth path to the peak but a lot of valleys on the way.

      • Strummer says:

They had goaltending last year, especially in the first round of the playoffs- this year not so much

i havent posted for a few years but i cant help but post now .

Time for MT to wake up. 10 game point streak wasnt good enough for him to keep the lines as is. Moving the two gallys off the eller line, which has been the best line all year no doubt about that. it has killed everything. Gallagher has no chance on that line cause DD and Patches play in two’s. Pleks and gionta’s game gone south ( mind you its nothing to do with Gally ) he’s the only guy showing up on that line. I have no idea what he is doing with the fourth line either. Prust, Moen, and White have shown to be a heck of a line. Tough to play against, they can intimidate and they can score. Leave that line alone.
AS FOR BRIERE. WOW has he been underused by this idiot coach. watching him on the second line with PLeks and Gio gave me tons of confidence in him. He started putting up the points , playing really good and mid game MT would replace him Moen. game after game. JUst leave him there he was playing great. Better than GIO thats for sure. ALso Bournival was playing great too on that line. Instead play him on the 4th line. i dont get it
He had some good lines going and the team was successful. Then just messed everything up. their PP was great with Eller as your number one , now he doesnt even play on the PP . and they are losing .
    Good coach gone stupid.
    lines should be

    Eller , 2 gallys
    Pleks, Gio and briere/bourny
    DD patches, and bourque
    white, moen and prust

    Very simple.

During the broadcast the Penquin’s commentators couldn’t stop reminiscing about Cammalleri’s playoff with the Habs when he filled the net and they got knocked out. Cammalleri scored again today.

Vermette just took a Turris clapper off the bean. No damage, but it won’t be long before an NHL player dies blocking shots. With the composite sticks everyone can shoot 100mph (just like buying the right golf club shafts).

No damage at all ..Vermette with the overtime winning hat-trick.

  69. Ozmodiar says:

    @ Eddie, RE: DD

You’re right. Long-term, they can’t have a 3rd line center (at best) playing with the best winger.

I find Eller and Pleks can tilt the ice from defensive zone to offensive zone. On DD’s line, Max is the driving force. This is why DD does nothing without Max.

I’d love to see the Habs add another two-way C like Pleks and Eller. Give them all a talented winger to work with to cause match-up problems for the other team. This would be especially helpful on the road.

For example, let’s say they could add a guy like ROR*, they could do:
    Chucky – Pleks – xx
    Max – ROR – xx
    xx – Eller – Gally

    * player chose at random – nothing to do with Habs scouting Aves all year, or the 6.5 qualifying offer he’ll receive, or the bad blood from last year’s hold out, or that MB stresses strength down the middle. ;)

  70. B says:

Saturday is a good night for the Habs to bounce back with a victory. Today is the winter solstice, so the days will be getting longer after today. Happy thoughts!
