Liveblog: Game 37 – Canadiens trounced in St. Louis

ChrisStewart

First period sealed deal

St. Louis got two goals from Alexander Steen and another by Chris Stewart in the first period and that was the ballgame.

Brendan Gallagher's 10th of the season was the only score of the middle period.

Jaden Schwartz and Maxim Lapierre made it 5-1 in the third.

St. Louis outshot the Canadiens 29-26.

Icing on the cake

Jaden Schwartz and Maxim Lapierre scored third-period goals to complete the rout.

Shutout averted

Brendan Gallagher snapped out of an 11-game scoring drought, batting his own rebound out of the air and past Jaroslav Halak.

It was the Canadiens' first even-strength goal in regulation since Dec. 7 in Buffalo: 356 minutes, 35 seconds.

Shots were 11-6 St. Louis.

POW!

It began with Alexander Steen's shorthanded goal, completing a 2-on-1 with T.J. Oshie four minutes in.

Three minutes later, Steen popped another one: his 24th, matching a career high.

Wide-open in the slot, Chris Stewart made it 3-0.

Alexei Emelin was on for all three St. Louis goals.

Shots were 12-8 for the home team.

Christmas road trip begins

Your Montreal Canadiens won't be back on Bell Centre ice until next year.

Between now and Jan. 4, the team plays in St. Louis, Nashville, Tampa Bay, Florida, Carolina and Dallas.

The Canadiens face two challenging games before a six-day Christmas break next week: the Blues Thursday night, the Predators on Saturday.

St. Louis sits second behind Chicago in the NHL's Central Division. The Blues have a plus-34 goal differential and are 13-3-2 at the Scottrade Center.

A week ago, the game shaped up as a clash between two of the league's best defence pairings: Andrei Markov and P.K. Subban vs. Alex Pietrangelo and Jay Bouwmeester. But Michel Therrien shuffled his Dmen against Phoenix, pairing P.K. with Josh Gorges and Markov with countryman Alexei Emelin.

Daniel Brière will be a healthy scratch against St. Louis.

In the interim, check out the Canadiens' Christmas card.

Can’t sit and watch a full game as of late. It’s getting old……. I guess they are just just a tired team?!

  3. Harditya says:

So how tired were the Habs tonight, Therrien?

  4. CHicoHab says:

MT went into the dressing room and kicked the garbage can halfway across the dressing room. Then realized it was DD who was kneeling down untying his skates.

  5. Dulljerk says:

P.K. Subban really excels at flipping the puck to the linesmen after an icing. He must work a lot on that, it is a trait of all Norris Trophy winners.

No eternal reward will forgive us for wasting the dawn.

  6. Storman says:

Blues never even entertained the slightest thought of not winning tonight.

  7. The Dude says:

Nice practice game for Halak and Blues…didn’t break sweat.

  8. Ring of Fire says:

Another beat down by Western powerhouse…..getting real old saying we’re too small….didn’t show up tonight….think they would’ve made this a statement game.

    The Thin Blue Line.

  9. I never watched the game, we had practice. I just got home, watched the first 4 minutes, saw the Blues 3 on 1 and 2 on 1 and went tot he wife. “Lori, look at my phone and tell me If I should bother” It was a quick answer.

Game Recap: We were down 3-0 early, but then we played a lot better and only lost 2-1 over the final two periods.

  11. topher5468 says:

I guess they didn’t like getting their ass kicked tonight, so, play better

To the rest of you, good night, and don’t stay on here too long; not good for the santé mentale.

” And as a fan there’s not a single thing you can do about”

I disagree. The fans have total control. They stop going to games, Stop buying Habs memorabilia. The Molson will get the meassage rather quickly.

  13. Samovich says:

    Against legitimate Cup contenders 11-1..

  14. Davey93 says:

I don’t understand how bergevin signed briere over Brendan morrow, who is the exact type of player we needed. A big tough hard nosed guy for the 3rd line. Oh well..

    • habsfan0 says:

      Oui.
      C’est un mystère.

    • Mattyleg says:

You’re positive that the two players were willing to come to Montreal for the same kind of deal, term, etc?

It was just a simple ‘one or the other’ job?
      You’re sure about that?

      —Hope Springs Eternal—

    • Mark C says:

Morrow has one more assist than Danny, let’s not kid ourselves a lot of posters would be whining and crying about him too if he was here.

      • Davey93 says:

If briere is not scoring, he is absolutely useless. Morrow brings size, grit and leadership . Trust me, morrow would have been a much better player for the team, regardless if hes putting up points or not.

        • Mark C says:

While larger than Danny is 6 foot 205 really “size”? How would you know Morrow is a better leader? Ever been a teammate of either player?

I don’t disagree that Morrow would have been better fit, I’ve liked his game for years. But none of that was my point.

          • Davey93 says:

Yes, 6 ft 205 lbs is “size” for this team. Not to mention he’s getting paid 2.5 M less than briere and has only a one year contract so I don’t think many posters would be complaining about him as much as briere.

  15. habsfan0 says:

    Not a good night.
Even the Laffs won on a goal that nobody saw go into the net.

  16. Dulljerk says:

  17. SUMO says:

PK’s at least is showing some fight. Some passengers among the vets tonight,

    • Habsbill24 says:

So at what point does the team not being ready to play become the coaches’ responsibility?

      • SUMO says:

Watch all the goals. How many 2-on-1s and lack of execution in the D-zone and poor decisions with the puck are his fault? The team is old and the some of the vets are showing their age.

Their were 2 PPs in the 3rd period when the score was still 3-1. They didn’t score and there was the game. You’re blaming the coach for not executing on the PP?

  18. Ozmodiar says:

Habsfan0 – DD invisible?!? Wha choo talken bout?? Didn’t you see that assist? A beauty, like the 2 the other night.

Should be good for RDS 2nd star.

    ;)

  19. Habsbill24 says:

It is pretty clear that our 5M man and captain should not come back next year at any price. Buy out for Briere and Bourque? Diaz should be traded at the deadline to get something for him as he shouldn’t be back either.

  20. CHicoHab says:

Murray’s pass hopped over whites stick. Still a big fan of Murray

  21. Samovich says:

Morrow or Briere ? I believe that was a choice, I hope they sold enough Briere merchandise

Price should have been on the bench after the 1st. The game was over at that point.

  24. Mattyleg says:

What was I saying about that stupid reverse-check of PK’s?

  25. Et le but says:

    Off to Nashville…night folks

  26. Azriel says:

Aight”’ Subban goin’ ghetto on Morrow

  27. Plekasuares says:

Now now I know that turnover was BRUTAL! Price down early again.

  28. habsfan0 says:

Marc Bergevin must have known the Blues were about to score again,so he pulled the plug on the telecast

  29. Habbu says:

When you need your goaltender to be near perfect to stay competitive………..not a good sign

  30. port elgin says:

    Trade DD for Lapierre

  31. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

    Halak will score next.

  32. Mark C says:

Hope all the Murray fanboys enjoyed that wonderful pass.

  33. CHicoHab says:

Did we just miss a goal

  34. Mondou6 says:

We’ve turned into a blooper reel.

  35. Samovich says:

RDS deploys the mercy rule for the rest of the telecast

  36. Mattyleg says:

Oh dear, RDS has lost the feed.
    That makes my life easier…
oh, wait, it’s come back and it’s bad news.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  37. port elgin says:

    Too small, too wimpy

  38. port elgin says:

    I wish Breire was playing

  39. Ozmodiar says:

Steen might want to start watching out for #6.

  40. Coach K says:

In fairness, these guys did mount some effort in the last two periods. Its just that not everyone was ready to play tonight when the puck dropped.

    • Habsbill24 says:

It is pretty clear that our 5M man and captain should not come back next year at any price. Buy out for Briere and Bourque? Diaz should be traded at the deadline to get something for him as he shouldn’t be back either.

  41. Harditya says:

Too many problems with this team. I don’t see them making any sort of noise in the playoffs.

  42. Azriel says:

Steen is not Selfish… Price is. He should totally let Steen get his hat trick!!!

  43. habsfan0 says:

I haven’t noticed DD too much tonight.
Must be wearing his cloaking device again.

  44. Mondou6 says:

Do we win a game on this road trip? Seems like tonight’s play is the norm now.

  45. Rob Maguire says:

This is worse than being a Devils fan.

  46. Luke says:

I haven’t seen this many 2 on 1s since they scrambled the porn channel.

  47. CHicoHab says:

The one thing that would make my night. A thundering body check by Murray………………on Chris Lee

  48. habsfan0 says:

Another low scoring game for the Habs.

  49. Storman says:

Jaden Schwartz off the wrong side nice shot far side on Price,, few minutes earlier Lars Eller had a similar opportunity tries a low percentage pass to a noted goal scorer in Brandon Prust,,

  50. CHicoHab says:

Of course. Why would that go in. No luck.

  51. habsfan0 says:

Emelin is a minus 4 tonight.
Maybe he won’t make Russia’s team in Sochi.
    Nah.

  52. Sportfan says:

    Rather Morrow over Briere

  54. RAM_TOUGH says:

I HATE play me or trade me Halak!

    Guts-Glory-Ram

  55. Coach K says:

Emeiln…stop fracking screening your goalie!!! Again!!! As a D in the show you either get puck or player. Its unacceptable to get neither. Time for him to watch the game from the pressbox for a while.

  56. theox_8 says:

For those who are blaming price , I have one question . Do you actually think we would have come back and tied the game , had he saved that last goal ? My thoughts are no. So stop blaming price he is a top notch goalie .

  57. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

What is Halak’s record against us? It seems he has won most of the meetings.

    I remember Dec. 31, 1975

  58. Habsbill24 says:

From the moment Halak stopped Bournival, we were never in this game, not even close. Unfortunately this is becoming a recurring theme in Habs games.

  59. adadi says:

Patches is really not a very smart player.

    • Habsbill24 says:

And what does that make the rest of the team as Max led the team in in scoring the last two years and leads in goals this year? Max is not too smart and the rest are even dumber?

  60. Grimmly says:

And Patchs skates by the net instead of stopping at it, or that would have been an empty net

  61. Mondou6 says:

lol…The game is totally over, now it’s time for the refs to even up the penalties.

    So typical.

  62. danhabsfan says:

Please, Price held them in almost singlehandedly since the opening debacle How’s about some support.

  66. RAM_TOUGH says:

Oh well Price, they weren’t going to win it for you anyway!

  67. danhabsfan says:

This just sucks, I hate losing, esp when the Leafs win.

  68. Grimmly says:

Price knows he should have had that, oh well they wernt shutout haha

  69. ooder says:

I feel like if that was the habs we would have missed the net or made a floating pass

  70. Dulljerk says:

Price has kept this semi-close. Wasn’t fazed by early deficit.

So what better time to cough up a weak one.

No eternal reward will forgive us for wasting the dawn.

  71. Mattyleg says:

    Gah.
    Another 2-on-1.
