Liveblog: Game 37 – Canadiens trounced in St. Louis

ChrisStewart

First period sealed deal

St. Louis got two goals from Alexander Steen and another by Chris Stewart in the first period and that was the ballgame.

Brendan Gallagher's 10th of the season was the only score of the middle period.

Jaden Schwartz and Maxim Lapierre made it 5-1 in the third.

St. Louis outshot the Canadiens 29-26.

Icing on the cake

Jaden Schwartz and Maxim Lapierre scored third-period goals to complete the rout.

Shutout averted

Brendan Gallagher snapped out of an 11-game scoring drought, batting his own rebound out of the air and past Jaroslav Halak.

It was the Canadiens' first even-strength goal in regulation since Dec. 7 in Buffalo: 356 minutes, 35 seconds.

Shots were 11-6 St. Louis.

POW!

It began with Alexander Steen's shorthanded goal, completing a 2-on-1 with T.J. Oshie four minutes in.

Three minutes later, Steen popped another one: his 24th, matching a career high.

Wide-open in the slot, Chris Stewart made it 3-0.

Alexei Emelin was on for all three St. Louis goals.

Shots were 12-8 for the home team.

Christmas road trip begins

Your Montreal Canadiens won't be back on Bell Centre ice until next year.

Between now and Jan. 4, the team plays in St. Louis, Nashville, Tampa Bay, Florida, Carolina and Dallas.

The Canadiens face two challenging games before a six-day Christmas break next week: the Blues Thursday night, the Predators on Saturday.

St. Louis sits second behind Chicago in the NHL's Central Division. The Blues have a plus-34 goal differential and are 13-3-2 at the Scottrade Center.

A week ago, the game shaped up as a clash between two of the league's best defence pairings: Andrei Markov and P.K. Subban vs. Alex Pietrangelo and Jay Bouwmeester. But Michel Therrien shuffled his Dmen against Phoenix, pairing P.K. with Josh Gorges and Markov with countryman Alexei Emelin.

Daniel Brière will be a healthy scratch against St. Louis.

In the interim, check out the Canadiens' Christmas card.

  5. Mondou6 says:

These St. Louis announcers never shut up. So annoying. I think they get paid by the word.

  6. ooder says:

I feel like the biggest difference between us and the blues is puck management. The blues dont rush passes and play with a purpose. The habs seemed rushed in all their decision s

This is his second game back. Cut the guy some slack. Last I checked it has been awhile since the entire team was playing good offense

  10. Azriel says:

RDS in love with Berglund, big guy. It’s the grass is greener on the other side of the fence syndrom. How long ago did we have a big team? Was Houde even born yet?

    • Habsbill24 says:

Yup. We will be honorable losers again. MT will say he liked the fact that the team did not quit and that we have to give credit to the Blues. Pretty much his same speech after every game with the same result, another loss to a big team.

  16. Coach K says:

    anyone missing what Briere brings?

  17. Davey93 says:

The habs gotta learn how to play a full 60 mins. They lost this game in the first

  18. Ozmodiar says:

(flying) Saucer pass from Eller. :)

  19. theox_8 says:

Patches totally has galley’s back in the after whistle scrums….. Not ! As much as I admire him as a player he needs to grow a pair and man up once in a while .

    • Habsbill24 says:

Instead of worrying about what Max does in a scrum, maybe Eller, Bourque, Gionta, Moen, White, Prust, Diaz, Emelin and Gorges could contribute a goal now and then.

  20. RAM_TOUGH says:

Price bailed out their a$$es many a time this season, would be nice to return the favour.

  21. Ozmodiar says:

  24. potremblay says:

    Chu pus capable de Eller

  25. Storman says:

Down 3-1 Eller has to take that to the net and shoot

  26. CHicoHab says:

C’mon Eller. Three foot high pass

  27. habs-fan-84 says:

That was a really questionable call on Eller

  30. Feraco says:

I’m looking forward to next year! Beaulieu, Tinordi and Pateryn in the lineup. Diaz hopefully can be traded to a playoff team. I think he can be effective on a big team and on the pp.

That clip of Dallas winning the Cup reminds me how much I hate the ‘Win a Cup and Immediately Wear a Baseball Cap That Says I am a Champion’ rule.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  42. RAM_TOUGH says:

And Habs don’t screen goalies on the PP either

  60. Peter Young says:

Blues telecast puts up a graphic of Beliveau with his career stats, but the big label at the top says John Beliveau. My, my.

  61. Peter Young says:

Both Hall and Plante played for the Blues, but Hall was brilliant against the Habs in the 1968 final series.

  63. Azriel says:

Boone… Cialis commercial: POP ONE EARLY….

  64. Peter Young says:

Made a correction below: the Blues also made the Stanley Cup finals in 1970, lost to the Bruins (see the famous Bobby Orr photo, flying through the air after scoring the winning goal), making it three straight losing finals for the Blues.

  65. Azriel says:

Higgins 11 goals ??? how tall is this guy again?

  66. CHicoHab says:

I think was Glen Hall blues goalie

  67. Mark C says:

Unless there is some video feed the war room has which isn’t part of the TV broadcast, ridiculous SO goal for the Leafs.

  68. Peter Young says:

Blues intermission guy says Gallagher goal was lucky.

  69. 4loorplay says:

How long till MT has a melt down? He looks constipated.

    Nirvana is earned…

  70. Peter Young says:

To answer a question below, the Blues made the Stanley Cup finals twice, in 68 and 69, the first two expansion seasons, and the Habs swept them both times, although the Blues put up a good show. They were loaded with former Canadiens, like Doug Harvey and Dickie Moore, and their coach was Scotty Bowman. They’ve never gone that far again.

  71. Azriel says:

Guys, Listen, Benoit is trying to show us stuff…

  72. Coach K says:

If they keep their feet moving maybe they can draw a penalty early and cash in.

  73. Mattyleg says:

    Very, very strange.
I really should have put my money where my mouth was.
Had an absolute certain feeling that Buffalo would beat Boston today.
I don’t ever get feelings about other games, but as soon as they announced the matchup this morning, I thought, oh, that’s Buffalo’s game. Then I thought about how unlikely that really was.

But I couldn’t shake the feeling.

    Wonder what the odds were.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  74. Danno says:

Somewhat like the Coyotes game… Hoping for a big third period
