Liveblog: Game 36 – Canadiens explode in third, win 3-1

20 minutes does it

Dead in the water and trailing on Mikkel Boedker's goal after two periods, the Canadiens came to life in the third.

Outshooting the Coyotes 14-5, the Canadiens got power-play goals from Andrei Markov and Max Pacioretty to take the lead.

An empty-netter by Pacioretty came with three seconds left.

Carey Price made 21 saves through two periods en route to 26 on the game and First Star honours.

Three in the third

On an early-period power play, Andrei Markov blasted the puck through Mike Smith to get the Canadiens on the board.

Max Pacioretty's 13th, on another power play, was the winner.

Max-Pac scored into an empty net to seal the deal

Signs of life

The Canadiens killed a double minor to Brandon Prust.

Max Pacioretty hit the post behind Mike Smith on a power play.

Alex Galchenyuk forced Smith into a flamboyant glove save on a one-timer from in tight.

A 10-7 shot advantage, but still no goals.

First-period woes continue

The Canadiens haven't scored a first-period goal in their last six games.

Mikkel Boedker got Phoenix on the board, beating Carey Price with one of 15 shots the Canadiens' goaltender faced. The Canadiens blocked 12 shots, and six missed the net.

Mike Smith made 3 saves. His teammates blocked four and three shots missed the net.

Domination ... on home ice.

Rare visit

Lock up the lambs, the Coyotes are in town.

Phoenix has not visited the Bell Centre since Oct. 25, 2010.

The Canadiens won 3-2. The hero in Overtime?

Andrei Kostitsyn.

Sometimes, when the moon is full and the wind is blowing from the general direction of Belarus, I wonder what happened to dear old AK46.

Canadiens fans wondering what happened to Mike Ribeiro, Kyle Chipchura and Jeff Halpern get their answers at the Bell Centre Tuesday night.

This is the Canadiens' last home game of 2013.

Lines at morning skate: Galchenyuk-Plekanec-Gionta

• Speaking of the Canadiens' anemic offence – which we weren't, because it's too depressing – fan Andy  Kirstein notes "if you take away 27's goal in Philly with the goalie pulled and 6 skaters and 67's goal in Long Island at 4 in 4, we haven't scored a 5 on 5 goal since the 2nd period against Buffalo last Saturday."

• Why professional athletes should avoid bars

  1. Ozmodiar says:

    Good win tonight.

Pleks and Chucky looking good together. Max still rolling.

Murray, ugly, but effective… and great on the PK. Would like to see him re-signed. If one of the young guys step up, he can fall to the #7 slot.

Anyway, off to grab some food. Been craving Vietnamese noodle soup all night. Not sure why…..

  2. twilighthours says:

Habs outshot the Coyotes 24-12 over the final 40 minutes. And they were grrrreat in the third period.

    Finally! Something enjoyable to watch.

  3. HabinBurlington says:

This win could reduce a great deal of posts.

    • Et le but says:

      Goal posts?

    • Le Jadester says:

Well…. My three thoughts were….1) what were DD and Vermette talkin about. 2) what was MT telling Prustie and 3) why didn’t anyone tell Eller he had more time on that chance off the cutback in the third?

      Habs, OLE !

      • krob1000 says:

you have your back to the net area like that you never expect to have that much time….dangerous play and gutsy move to even try because normally someone is backhecking and would tattoo him all the way to the end boards or into the net on that play

  4. HardHabits says:

    D. Brière 4:27
    M. Bournival 5:17
    R. Bourque 9:42

    WTF 4:27 TOI?

I only watched the 3rd period. Did Brière get injured?

  5. Arnou Ruelle says:

Great win this evening. One thing though I can say: Daniel Brière is now the new Scott Gomez of this team (not Gallagher of course). 4 minutes of ice time for Brière and not even utilized at the power play. Bergevin made his first mistake by signing this guy. Thankfully, he’s only here till the end of next season.

    • daveho29 says:

Agree that the briere signing may not have been the best move, but to even to mention gallagher in the same sentence as gomez?
Really? Gallagher will be a consistent 30-40 goal scorer in the nhl one day with out a doubt.

PS, Dalton Thrower has 10g 18a 60 pm and a +7 in 31 games played, not bad for a Squamish boy 🙂

  6. twilighthours says:

Wilson’s hit on Schenn – dirty or not?

  7. krob1000 says:

mt just talked about the d transition to the forwards and having a puck mover (Pk and markov split I assume)on for more of the game…finally!!!

  8. habsfan0 says:

    Was Briere a factor tonight?

  9. krob1000 says:

uh just said momentum 3 times in 5 seconds…

  10. Sal from the Hammer says:

Georges saved Subbys bacon on that play.

  11. duffy says:

I am hoping this Phoenix team is pissed off enough to go into TO and beat the Leafs Thursday .

  12. Psycho29 says:

Beauty! Habs win, break-dancer Ribiero did nothing…..

What a play by Gorges, reminded me of the play Paul Coffey made in the 1984 Canada Cup…

    at the 0:10 mark:

  13. B says:

Ovechkin scores again, but ends up a minus in another Caps loss. Only 11 guys now with a worse +/- than the leagues leading goal scorer now? Ouch.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  14. krob1000 says:

I think best players on ice (goaleis aside) were Galchenyuk and Eller still though…Patches gets an honourable mention but Galchenyuk is already learning to protect the puck and Eller is maturing. Once these guys get other bigger skilled guys to work with look out

    • Peter Young says:

Right you are about their talent and promise, but there are people on this board who, just the other day, were saying Galchenyuk is overrated, will never be more than a third (or perhaps it was a second) line center, and ought to be traded. I’ve read similar comments about Eller. These must be the same people who have often said Price is a second-rate goaltender. Yes, you’re right in your comment below, the negativity goes overboard. I’m willing to entertain your notion that people say things they don’t really mean in the heat of the game, but a lot of these comments are made when no game is on.

  15. Danno says:

Lots of laughter on AC tonight

  16. HabinBurlington says:

Brutal play by Subban at blue line. Probably not allowed to say that here, but that was just plain stupid, almost cost the game.

But great third period overall by team, they were better from 2nd period on.

    Good win.

  17. Peter Young says:

A well-deserved empty-netter for Max after hitting bar and posts three times and a well-deserved victory for our Canadiens against a fairly decent Coyotes team. The third period was most enjoyable. Our team can play very good hockey despite what all the naysayers spout.
Rereading this game blog will demonstrate once again that a large number of our team’s fans are in manic-depressive mode–down to the extreme and then up to the extreme. I suspect it might have to do with youth, although I’m not sure. Thank goodness there are some level heads here, like Mattyleg and Bill to pick just two. Some of the rest are just painful to read.

    • krob1000 says:

that up and down is exactly what is experienced during a sporting event as a player…and that is why “momentum” exists…..I didn’t feel like moving an hour ago…then all of the sudden I am jumping around like a little kid…

      • Peter Young says:

That’s not what I’m talking about. All of us, even those I described as level headed, get excited when the team is playing well and feel bad when it doesn’t. What I’m talking about is the extreme reactions–dump the entire team, run the coach out of town, fire the general manager reactions.

        • krob1000 says:

Yeah I know…I’ve been here with ya for years defending playters and coaches…some I shouldn’t have in retrospect but sometimes the negativity is too much to take….I just treat like a game now…you say things in the heat of the moment that you don’t really mean….I think those are just posters who wear their hearts in their type! I see it as they are people who haven’t mastered the Markovian Pleksus focus method as of yet.

    • B says:

Pacioretty should of just killed off the last few seconds instead of shooting at the net from the wrong side of center. Good thing he didn’t miss. Nit picking aside, a good win in a close game.

      –Go Habs Go!–

    • Bill says:

I’m not that level-headed. Catch me during a Bruins-Habs game, ha.

  21. FlyAngler says:

Backes out for St. Louis……. certainly improves the Habs chances…..

    “Elever le flambeau!…Raise the Torch!”

  22. 25Stanleycups says:

Thank God the East, other then Boston, and Pittsburgh, sucks. We finally outshot an opponent, in the last 6-7 games. Lucky win. Teams needs lots of work still. Half a season to figure it out still. Go Habs.

  23. aroma says:

Lost in the excitement is the fact that Briere saw less than five minutes of action. NOW will White get to play as Danny sits? I want to see the White-Prust-Moen line intact – it works. I’d also like to see another winger – one who can score – with Pleks and Galchenyuk, but that’s not going to happen….not this year anyway.

    • kalevine says:

he took a stupid penalty and put the puck on the opponent’s stick as soon as he could. Also missed the net on a glorious chance. That’s quite a bit for barely 4 minutes. I never wanted him here and I certainly don’t have any sympathy for him now. However, if he somehow starts producing, please clear a space on his bandwagon

    • Cdnman1 says:

4:27 on the ice and nothing in the third.

  24. smiler2729 says:

    Daniel Briere is wasted…
    Jack Edwards is a clam.
    Gary Bettman is a bobblehead.
The “CH” in CHOKE stands for Toronto Maple Leafs.

  25. krob1000 says:

Boo! no worries…not booing the team….just echoing the ghosts! Kind of ironic a guy named Klinkhammer hammered one off the post and klinked so loud you could hear it in Phoenix…have we appeased the spirits?

  26. RAM_TOUGH says:

Price don’t look very happy. I may want out of Montreal.

  27. duffy says:

    The bandwagon is full !

  28. Danno says:

Two goals, an assist and three goal posts. Just another day at the office for Max.

    This calls for a scotch!

  30. slapshot777 says:

Gorges makes a great play to save PKs bacon. I can’t understand Gorges all night he plays with the puck like it’s a grenade and rushes he passes with looking. Then with the game on the line he make a brilliant play. Go figure

  31. Cdnman1 says:

Price wins the battle for the hockey team. Smith can join the diving team!

  32. danhabsfan says:
