Liveblog: Game 35 – Again, too little too late as Panthers win 2-1

DDFla

Running on empty

Playing their third game in four nights, the Canadiens mustered a measly 18 shots on goal and lost 2-1 to Scott Clemmensen and the visiting Florida Panthers.

Alex Galchneyuk has scored his team's last three regulation-time goals – the latest early in the third period on a power play.

But with Peter Budaj on the bench for a sixth attacker, Galchenyuk wasn't on the ice.

?

The visitors got second-period goals from Jesse Winchester and Nick Bjugstad.

Budaj stopped the other 23 shots he faced.

Exciting ending

Alex Galchenyuk's 10th of the season, on an early power-play, narrowed the lead to 2-1.

The Canadiens had 35 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play but could muster little pressure on Scott Clemmensen.

With Peter Budaj on the bench, six attackers pressed for the qualizer.

It was not to be.

Deep hole

For a team that's forgotten how to score, two goals is a daunting deficit.

Jesse Winchester, alone in the slot, and Nick Bjugstad, with a knuckler over Peter Budaj's shoulder, put Florida ahead.

The Canadiens had four second-period shots on Scott Clemmensen.

They have not scored a goal in regulation through the last 12 periods of hockey.

Brutal.

Stop me if you've read this before

Yest another goalless 20 minutes for your Montreal Canadiens.

Moreover, the home team was outshot 14-8 by Florida.

Peter Budaj was particularly sharp on Tomas Fleischmann and Brad Boyes.

The Canadiens did mount a threatening power play.

Budaj, not booing

Just when we were ready to set the Bell Centre Boo-meter to 11.

Scott Gomez will be a healthy scratch for the Florida Panthers Sunday night.

Gomez has played 19 games for Florida. He's scored one goal, added four assists and is minus-7. He's in the pressbox for the seventh straight game.

A team of bleary-eyed Canadiens will be facing Gomez's teammates.

Because of the weather system that has dumped snow on our part of the world, the Canadiens celebrated their OT win over the Islanders by sitting on the tarmac in New York Saturday night.

The team charter didn't touch down in Montreal until 2:35 a.m.

And the players will be back on the ice to face the Panthers at 6 p.m.

Peter Budaj in nets.

Check back later for live game blogging.

Love the fact McCarron is being judged by so many here based on numbers already.

I mean come on MB clearly drafted him thinking he was going to be some guy that dangles the puck, toe drag it, then snipe top corner.

If he doesn’t score 40 goals the first year he plays in the Canadian Junior Hockey League after playing in the U.S. developmental program as a large bruising power forward, then obviously he is useless.

  57. FlyAngler says:

The Habs need to fix the power play. I can understand having DD center the line that Max is on, but no way should he be on the PP. The PP centers should be Plekanec and Eller period. DD is unable to maintain control of the puck when any amount of pressure is applied in the attacking zone on the PP. A big part of it is he is just too small.

    “Elever le flambeau!…Raise the Torch!”

  58. NCRhabsfan says:

So Gomez has Desharnais-like numbers and is a healthy scratch? Hmmm. He might even be a better dollar to point player than Desharnais now that he’s only earning $900K. Why do the Habs always have at least one guy way under performing their contract? I wonder if every team has one guy not earning his salary?

    • JUST ME says:

Every team has one except that in Mtl if we don`t have one we will find one in the lineup to complain about. So it`Gomez, then Carey`s last chance, then D.D. ,now Briere… Always been that way .

  59. Habitant in Surrey says:

…don’t know why one would boo Gomer …he was a feckless player that played as hard as he could, it’s only that somewhere along the way (on the ‘way’ to his bank ?) the skills left him

    …he was who he was …or wasn’t

  60. JUST ME says:

Let`s stack up the points now. We will be very happy to have them later on and it can only bring Bergevin to work bigger deals if he feels that maybe we can…Some players will be gone anyway before the end of the season. Let`s not let them go without anything in return.
    Go habs go !

  61. Caesar says:

No Parros = more Murray me thinks

    • NCRhabsfan says:

That’s okay too, Murray is actually a hockey player that occasionally fights not a fighter that occasionally finds himself in a hockey game.

      • Mr. Biter says:

Read an article at beginning of year. Top 50 body checkers in NHL. Murray was #3 or 5 and Emelin was # 9. PK was also in top 20 but IMO he seems to have stopped the heavy hit’s he was laying out last year. Murray could have been MB’s best pick up in the off season.

        Mr. Biter
        No Guts No Glory

    • donmarco says:

2 entirely different roles. Murray does appear to have moved ahead of Bouillon, but I would think no Parros = more White.

  62. Bill says:

Two teams going in opposite directions with Florida on a bit of a roll and the Habs really struggling to score. Could be an ugly one.

    Full Breezer 4 Life

  63. JohninTruro says:

McCarron scored again, now has 5 on the year.

    • SlovakHab says:

      Tha’s not a goal scoring machine…
I’m not stoked he’s sitting at less than half point per game. All other OHL/WHL forwards that were available when we took him (Klimchuk, Dickinson, Hartman) are scoring at over point per game.

De La Rose has comparable stats in Swedish league to what McCarron scores in OHL.

      • SmartDog says:

He’s had injuries dude, and anyway give him a bit of time before you right him off. Ridonculous.

        ————————————-
Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!

        • JohninTruro says:

Yes, if we did the same thing with Tinordi and traded him for a bag of pucks, after his terrible first year with London where would that have gotten us? People don’t get these guys are PROSPECTS and big guys like this take a number of years to develop if they do at all. He was a late 1st rounder, a project, nothing ventured, nothing gained. This isn’t a top 5 bust. Unreal eh?

          • SmartDog says:

Yep. But you never know if it’s a 13-year-old on the other keyboard. Sometimes I sure hope so. :)

          • SlovakHab says:

            Oh wow,
I raise my opinion that the guy may have not much of an offensive upside, and I get slammed for trying to have a discussion, on a hockey blog. Ah well..

But yeah, I don’t expect much from McCarron beyond a 4th liner. If he does better, great. I’m a Habs fan after all.

          • JohninTruro says:

Slovak you weren’t “raising your opinion” you were the one actually slamming McCarron and Bergevin’s pick, and I was defending it. I don’t doubt you are a habs fan, but you are far from a scout with some pedigree. I’m not one either, but I know well enough that it is far too early to judge the good and bad of this kid at this stage based on a million things. I am a Habs fan myself, which means I put trust in the guys running my favorite team, and the picks they make.

  64. Mr. Biter says:

    Boone,
Why would the faithful boo Gomer. He’s gone, did not sign with another team for more money, or ever bitch about his time with the Habs and when he left we became a better team. He should have gotten a rousing cheer for leaving. And like I always say never blame the player for his contract, blame the G.M. who gave it to him.

  65. 24 Cups says:

To be fair, Florida has won 4 out of their last 5 games including two victories over Detroit. Thomas may be on the injury list but if he does start, it could be a bad omen.

I take it that White and Bouillon will be playing tonight.

    • Mike Boone says:

      Murray, not Bouillon

      • 24 Cups says:

Interesting, Mike. I figured they would alternate the two guys on back-to-back games, especially seeing the late plane ride home. I wonder if this means that Murray is now the entrenched 6th Dman, with Frankie in reserve?

        • JohninTruro says:

Murray has been good, and I thought was great last game. Getting more comfortable in his role. As I have been saying all along he needs to be paired with a good skating puck moving D like Diaz to make him do his job safely. It has been a good pairing.

  66. FlyAngler says:

Have to say that even going back to his Rangers days, whenever Gomez gave was interviewed, he struck me as the kind of guy whose brain was fried from smoking to much weed……. it certainly would explain a lot of things……just sayin’…………

  67. Stevie.Ray says:

Florida is floundering. Going nowhere fast. When Tallon took over I was expecting Florida to put together a decent squad. It looked like Tallon was trying to get his hands on as many “solid” players as he could because the big names wouldn’t go there.

He went and got Versteeg, Kopecky, Upshall, Fleischmann, Boyes, and they drafted Bjugstad and Huberdeau. It’s basically a team of second line guys.

They have Barkov and Huberdeau, and a few other decent prospects but nothing really spectacular.

What would it take to get Huberdeau from Florida. A fair trade for both sides that will help Florida in the short term and long term, while not hurting Montreal short term or long term?

  68. Hobie Hansen says:

I think that we are starting to see what is at stake here. Loving a good fight means that both players seem to be o.k. after the fight. We know now that everything is not always o.k. and that the damages are done without anyone seeing anything. Yes the Parros event was tough to witness but what about the rest of the enforcers ?

  75. Marc10 says:

Parros is a smart guy. He knows the risks. Hopefully he’s one of the last ones to do this job. Fighting is not necessary in hockey. Refs and league officials who enforce the rules are.

I posted this last game, but not sure if it got modded or not… Was posting from my android phone and couldn’t read the comments.

There’s definitely a price to pay for concussions. We’re now just starting to see how much. The link is about a kid sustaining a fatal injury in rugby, but it illustrates the point. 77. NCRhabsfan says:

Wow, that was quick. He’s played what, half a season of OHL hockey? I thought the whole point was that after playing in the US program he needed some seasoning under Hunter in London. Isn’t that exactly what he’s doing? Learning on the job? He’s big, skates well and he is very young, why don’t we wait until at least this time next season before we start expecting too much. Besides, I don’t think he was ever projected to be a Jason Spezza type; I thought they were always hoping he would develop into a red, white and blue version of Lucic (who is also not a point a game guy).
