Liveblog: Game 34 – Canadiens top Islanders on OT goal by Pacioretty

MaxNYI

Not easy

The Canadiens and Islanders battled through 61 minutes and 50 seconds of scoreless hockey.

Then some determination – he was knocked down twice on the sequence – and clever playmaking by David Desharnais set the table for Max Pacioretty's 12th goal – and fourth game-winner – of the season.

Carey Price made 21 saves for his second shutout of the season and 21st of his career.

Evegni Nabokov stopped 24 of 25.

Max wins it

Just under two minutes into overtime, Max Pacioretty converts a pass by David Desharnais for the game's only goal.

Chances

Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov had to be  sharp on Tomas Plekanec, Andrei Markov and Lars Eller.

Shots were 6-5 Canadiens, 23-21 on the game.

Ho-hum

The Islanders blew a 4-on-1.

Each team blew power-play chances.

Islanders had a 7-6 shot advantage.

Not a classic so far

Two minutes into the game, George Parros and Islanders' enforcer Eric Boulton dropped 'em in an absurd fight that ended with the refs ordering to Parros to the Canadiens' quiet room after he was KOed.

The game he left behind was equally quiet.

The Canadiens had an 11-9 shot advantage, but the closest thing to a goal was John Tavares hitting the post to Carey Price's left.

It can only get better.

Bounce-back game?

The Canadiens have lost more than two in a row only once this season: the beginning of October, when they dropped games to Minnesota, Colorado, St. Louis and Ottawa.

The loss to the Blues was a Bell Centre Shootout. The Canadiens have not lost three straight in regulation ... to date.

The Islanders are 19 points behind the Canadiens in the Eastern Conference standings. They are coming off a dismal road trip in which they lost four of five to Western Conference opponents (and scored an improbable Shootout win in San Jose).

The home team is 1-7-2 in its last 10. The Islanders are seemingly ripe for the plucking by a Canadiens team trying to get back on the winning track.

Sometimes, however, the plucker becomes the pluckee.

We'll see.

Dont call me a Troll please. But you know MT. And you know Max Paxioretty. Max lives by his own rules… in a kinda way. And MT has these ‘behaviour’ rules. This is twice now Max has done this… do u think he’s sending a message?

  2. Storman says:

I just saw the Eller hit on Tavares, they really called that a penalty

Who plays tomorrow, Price or Budaj?

  7. Marc10 says:

We’ll take it! Nice work Patches and DD. Phew!

  8. habsfan0 says:

2 goals for the Habs in 10+ periods.
At this rate Price/Budaj will have to throw a shutout every game for the Habs to have any chance.

  9. habs-fan-84 says:

    nice finish

Boone… Vanek? Ye of little faith. Jacques Martin would be proud, non?

Price gets a shut out but no star…

I’m guessing that still doesn’t qualify as a game Price stole by those who insist he never does so?

    • JohninTruro says:

Didn’t look good in the two losses, and looked a little shaky tonight, but after two losses a little confidence gainer in this game should get him back on track like we have seen all year.

      • Bill says:

Ha, yeah, he looked really shaky getting that shutout tonight. Very shaky with his 1.00 GAA in the last two games.

        • JohninTruro says:

Bill, he was awkward tonight in net, no this usual self. I didn’t see confidence in his game in my opinion, almost like he was falling down a lot. Maybe it was the ice because a lot of guys were down, but he didn’t have to be very good tonight, and I felt he looked a little uncomfortable, but as I said after this shutout hopefully it gets that confidence back to where it was.

          • olematelot says:

Didn’t think he was awkward at all, tracked the puck really well, made some difficult saves look easy. Solid game from him.

      • RAM_TOUGH says:

In Carey’s defence, the last two goals vs LA should not have counted.

        Guts-Glory-Ram

        • JohninTruro says:

I don’t remember the 4th, but the third one for sure shouldn’t have counted. That goal sealed the deal on that game, may have gone a different way tough to say though.

      • Grimmly says:

He Let in 2 goals last game, not good at all. Seriously Price takes more crap for the fans then any other player, give the guy a break

        • JohninTruro says:

Sorry folks, not criticizing Price here, big supporter of Price, but I am also not afraid to put out my opinion on a game. Like most people here (I will give the benefit of the doubt) I have watched every minute of every game so I have a good idea, again in my opinion, of when I know Price is being Price and on his game. I did not see Price on “his game” like he can be or has been most of this season tonight. Neither goalie had to be great to get a win tonight for their team. As I stated above, very pleased he gets the SO and more importantly the win as he needs to get his confidence back flowing again and hopefully this does it.

      • Grimmly says:

The only people that bash Price the second he has a bad game are the Halak squad that are still butt hurt he got traded instead of Price. Only after a shutout can Price be critized

    • Mr. Biter says:

HIB, you know no matter how good Price plays certain posters are going to hate him.

  18. RAM_TOUGH says:

I was wrong about Max tonight. Glad I was. But he better watch out or MT will ban his post goal celebrations!

Max left the ice very slowly that shift.
