Liveblog: Game 34 – Canadiens top Islanders on OT goal by Pacioretty

Not easy

The Canadiens and Islanders battled through 61 minutes and 50 seconds of scoreless hockey.

Then some determination – he was knocked down twice on the sequence – and clever playmaking by David Desharnais set the table for Max Pacioretty's 12th goal – and fourth game-winner – of the season.

Carey Price made 21 saves for his second shutout of the season and 21st of his career.

Evegni Nabokov stopped 24 of 25.

Max wins it

Just under two minutes into overtime, Max Pacioretty converts a pass by David Desharnais for the game's only goal.

Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov had to be  sharp on Tomas Plekanec, Andrei Markov and Lars Eller.

Shots were 6-5 Canadiens, 23-21 on the game.

The Islanders blew a 4-on-1.

Each team blew power-play chances.

Islanders had a 7-6 shot advantage.

Not a classic so far

Two minutes into the game, George Parros and Islanders' enforcer Eric Boulton dropped 'em in an absurd fight that ended with the refs ordering to Parros to the Canadiens' quiet room after he was KOed.

The game he left behind was equally quiet.

The Canadiens had an 11-9 shot advantage, but the closest thing to a goal was John Tavares hitting the post to Carey Price's left.

It can only get better.

Bounce-back game?

The Canadiens have lost more than two in a row only once this season: the beginning of October, when they dropped games to Minnesota, Colorado, St. Louis and Ottawa.

The loss to the Blues was a Bell Centre Shootout. The Canadiens have not lost three straight in regulation ... to date.

The Islanders are 19 points behind the Canadiens in the Eastern Conference standings. They are coming off a dismal road trip in which they lost four of five to Western Conference opponents (and scored an improbable Shootout win in San Jose).

The home team is 1-7-2 in its last 10. The Islanders are seemingly ripe for the plucking by a Canadiens team trying to get back on the winning track.

Sometimes, however, the plucker becomes the pluckee.

We'll see.

  2. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

If this were a playoff game… It would be one of those 13-period scoreless nightmares. Gotta love the aggregate scoring system used in football. (Proper football, that is, eh Boone?)

  3. Storman says:

Hi all back from some alumni crapola, looks like the game has also been on the shiate side, i guess i have not missed to much offense.

  4. Danno says:

    Next goal is huge

lol…The only fans on their edge of the seat are the ones who are getting ready to leave.

  6. habs_54321 says:

Anyone else feel that this goal slump has been in most part due to therrien blowing up the lines after the LA game?

man, this is a greasy hockey game

  8. ABHabsfan says:

    somebody wake up Boone

  9. HabsFix says:

It’s like I’m re-watching the Calgary/Buffalo game that was this afternoon.

  10. Mondou6 says:

Now Galley is fellating Nabokov, who has looked shaky all night.

  11. Dulljerk says:

Nabokov lookin very sharp. I say a soft goal decides this, and guess who it will be on.

No eternal reward will forgive us for wasting the dawn.

  12. Bill says:

Anytime this team gets a chance, Chuck is in the middle of it. Coach needs to start giving him the ball, eh?

  14. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

Really yucky that the Leafs blow out of the Hawks is happening in TO. Yuck. Please god, let the Hawks have a miracle on ice.

  15. twilighthours says:

Galchenyuk our best player by a mile tonight

  16. Habbu says:

The Habs have looked like a fatigued team for a week……even against the Sabres last Saturday…..

  17. Mondou6 says:

This has to be the worst game I’ve seen all year.

    Highlights: None.

  18. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Florida better watch out. We’re gonna do this to them next!

  19. filincal says:

One goal in three games…someone get “mojo” on the phone and em we need ya back!!!

  20. Bill says:

    Blackhawks are frigging horrible, eh?

PS: Leafs have looked a lot better without Phaneuf for two games, eh?

  23. HabsFix says:

I wonder if the habs will ever have set lines…

  24. kalevine says:

One good thing is Prust seems healthy

  25. piper says:

Those useless Leafs sure are givin it to the Hawks tonight.

  26. Whatever says:

Can we not hose a team in a trade a la Roy, Gomez ,Chelios and get Tavares from Garth Snow?

  27. NLhabsfan says:

I rather TSN than CBC any day.

  28. The Dude says:

It’s like having a team of Garth Murray’s!

  29. danhabsfan says:

How can you play Boullion in place of Murruy?

  30. Rudy says:

    Ole’s show up

  31. PrimeTime says:

    Price >Taveres

  32. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

  34. Habbu says:

Maybe MT didn’t like Gally’s show of emotion in Philly.

  35. RAM_TOUGH says:

    Murray is a BEAST

  36. Mondou6 says:

This game is complete crap. We looked better in the LA game.

What a horrible mess of a hockey game. Both teams should get 0 points.

  37. twilighthours says:

It’s too bad someone has to win this game

  38. Danno says:

Clutterbuck sounds too much like something I cannot blog in polite company…

Islanders announcers both found nothing wrong with Eller hit,

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  40. John Q Public says:

    C’est le but !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. kalevine says:

ugh, how many 2-3-4 on 1’s have the Isles had. Pretty much every defender has been caught

  42. jols101 says:

Where oh where did the offense go?

  43. Mondou6 says:

It’s so hilarious how much these CBC announcers hate Montreal. Every single comment, all night long. Once in a great while, they feel compelled to say something good about the Habs, but it’s always done grudgingly, and with some backhanded compliment, or sarcastic remark thrown in.

  44. haballmylife says:

I’m guessing that if a guy gets caught with his head down you can’t hit him anymore

  45. Danno says:

So I gather this game won’t be included in the Habs Box Set DVD of All-Time Classic Games?

  46. danhabsfan says:

Boone, this game is better than the last game

  47. HabinBurlington says:

Anyone noticing how Gionta seems unable to take a wrist shot? Everything is snap or slapshot. When he has tried to just wrist the puck into the other teams end, shot is very weak.

About 3 weeks ago he had a shift which ended with him holding his arm hunched over.

I am convinced he has reinjured his arm.

Just a few minutes ago he is wide open in front of net and takes a snap shot instead of wristing the puck into a corner of the net.

  48. danhabsfan says:

STOP giving up those odd man rushes, yikes!

  49. Habbu says:

    Gally’s TOI is down no?…..

  50. Bill says:

Time to put Chucky at centre and see what happens … only guy who has scored this week …

  52. Mondou6 says:

Eller gets 2 minutes for a 100% clean shoulder to shoulder hit on Tavares, who was skating with the puck, and not watching at all where he was going.

    This league is a circus.

  53. NLhabsfan says:

    Not allowed to check anymore.

  54. Rudy says:

They better not go after Eller

  55. Maritime Ronn says:

48.1  – A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact is not permitted. However, in determining whether such a hit should have been permitted, the circumstances of the hit, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit or the head contact on an otherwise legal body check was avoidable, can be considered.

  56. ABHabsfan says:

Having the benefit of replay, it is clear it was a clean hit. However I can see how the ref would think it was a hit to the head on his first and only chance to see it. Helmet flying off likely clinched it.

  57. adadi says:

Who is doing the colour for HNIC tonight. According to him the Gryba hit was clean and Eller’s hit was dirty. Retard.

  58. jols101 says:

Only thing worse than a Habs PP tonight is an Isles PP.

  59. Danno says:

Somebody should demonstrate on one of the refs what a real head shot is

  60. jrshabs1 says:

HIO… instead of ripping Timo..why don’t you call out your small soft team for being small and soft? There’s a couple people that are just down right delusional. They remind me of leaf fans. This small soft edition of our Habs isn’t winning anything without BIG changes.

    Go Habs Go!!

  61. habs-fan-84 says:

lol is Galley really that blind??

  62. Propwash says:

That hit was clean. This league is a frigging joke.

  63. twilighthours says:

Eller determined to be on the giving end of those hits since the gryba incident.

  64. piper says:

It time to look ahead. Markov to Washington for Tom Wilson.

  65. NLhabsfan says:

    This stinks

  66. RAM_TOUGH says:

If that was a head shot he would not be out on the next shift!

  67. Habbu says:

If that was a hit to the head, Tavares would be in the quiet room, not on the PP

  68. mrhabby says:

    Shoulder to shoulder.

  69. Et le but says:

Because his chin strap was too loose?

  70. AZ_Hab_Fan says:

Tavares stays on the ice. Stupid ref.

  71. Coach K says:

Remember, we all lost our mind when Koivu was hit like that…

—When Hell freezes over, I’ll play hockey there too—

  72. Bill says:

Good hit by Eller. That’s what we want. What’s the penalty?? They let blatant boarding go, and call Eller for that? This league = bush league.
