Liveblog: Game 33 – Flyers “edge” woeful Canadiens 2-1

Firing blanks

Last Saturday at the Bell Centre, Alex Galchenyuk scored against the Buffalo Sabres at 18:07 of the second period.

Thursday night in Philadelphia, Galchenyik scored at 19:05 of the third period.

For 140 minutes and eight seconds in between: Zilch.

The Flyers got goals from Michael Raffl in the first period and Claude Giroux in the second.

Steve Mason faced 21 shots, Carey Price 27.

Finally a goal

Alex Galchenyuk beat Steve Mason with 55 seconds left.

It was the Canadiens first goal in 1:40:08.

Too little, too late.

And the drought goes on

Your Montreal Canadiens have not scored a goal in 121:03 of playing time.

Their opponents – Buffalo, L.A. and Philadelphia – have scored nine.

The latest was by Claude Giroux, benefitting from poor zone coverage by Alex Galchenyuk, David Desharnais and Raphael Diaz.

The latter will have time to atone.

Alexei Emelin is out of the game after a head shot on Steve Downie.

During the resultant PP, Carey Price robbed Brayden Schenn.

Not exactly 20 minutes of spine-tingling hockey.

The Flyers got back from Chiacgo at 2:30 a.m.

What's the Canadiens' excuse for four SoG in the period.

Alexei Emelin went to sleep on the only goal of the period, an easy one for Michael Raffl off uncontested passes by Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek.

The Flyers had nine SoG, plus 14 that were blocked and one that missed the net.

Numbers for the Canadiens: 4-3-1

Still scary?

Back in the heyday of the Broad Street Bullies, circa early 1970s, visiting Philadelphia was a daunting prospect for NHL teams.

The Flyers were big. They were bad. They were truculent.

And led by Bobby Clarke and Bernard Parent, Philadelphia was good.

A visit to City of Brotherly Love and Hockey Hate offered the daunting prospect of being beaten on the scoreboard and the ice, prompting some players to develop the Philly Flu in hopes of being scratched.

Times have changed.

The Wells Fargo Center is not the Spectrum. And the current edition of the Flyers is not the pugnacious powerhouse of yesteryear.

But games in Philadelphia are rarely easy for the undersized Canadiens.

The Canadiens beat the Flyers 4-1 at the Bell Centre in the second game of the season, but that was when Claude Giroux was still in his early-going coma.

Since then, Giroux has become Giroux again, Philadelphia has changed coaches and Craig Berube has them playing decent hockey – notwithstanding aWednesday night 7-2 pasting in Chicago.

This game was over when we barely beat buffalo on Saturday. Lol all part of the manic Highs and Lows of being a Hab fan.

  2. JM says:

They must be tired from last weeks games.

  3. adadi says:

Hate to say it but this game is over.

  4. Puckdoc says:

Our PF hasn’t thrown one hit.

  5. doogie says:

All the more reason to get bigger, tougher, stronger, faster and more offensive. Let’s do it while Price is good.

  6. aldostevemarano says:

Fire Therrien!!! He doesn’t adjust or communicate with the players during a game. The only reason it’s not 6-0 is because Philly is a much worse team than LA.

  7. kalevine says:

let’s see the isles even TRY to shut us out!

  8. RAM_TOUGH says:

That’s it when he is 3 apples high!

  9. RH says:

A for effort there. If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying hard enough!

  10. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

Nice to see Galchenyuk all up in the ref’s face, though.

  11. 25Stanleycups says:

Glad that honeymoon is over, the glee filled zealous environment around here lately was starting to get screechingly unbearable. Hopefully, reality sets in to everyone, that this is a confidently fragile team at best still. And swapping Murrays for Boullions, are a joke…When half the team takes 5 games off, and alternates between roles. Still love my HABS though. No other club.

  12. Samovich says:

    he punched it in..

  13. adadi says:

    Nice try Gio.

  14. slyCH says:

    No kidding. What, me worry?

  15. SUMO says:

I love Murray. When was the last time the Habs had a guy push back like that?

He may be slow getting around but hes quick to fight back.

  16. Marc10 says:

    This is painful. Yuk.

Can we put Subbidoo on the wing? I don’t think he could be any worse than our forecheckers.

Please MT. Don’t sit Bourni again.

  17. danhabsfan says:

How can you keep taking Murruy out of the line up?

  18. adadi says:

MT, I know this us hard for you to understand but please trust me when I say Murray should play every game.

  19. Reflektor says:

Crankshaft took on three Flyers at once. Wake the F up teammates.

  20. habs-fan-84 says:

    lol Murray, what an animal

  21. drail222 says:

one more fly by from pacioretty and i may vomit

  22. FormalWare says:

Oooh, Mr. Boone: “Captain Finished”?! I’m shocked! (Laughing – but shocked!)

    WWSD (What Would SubbieDoo?)

  23. jsaz says:

They give up way to many pucks!! It’s annoying

  24. danhabsfan says:

    One goal can change everything

  25. Storman says:

Emelin interviewed after period, not sure why he was given a penalty, but he thinks one of the ref’s know Russian Вы сосать задницу должностных лиц

  26. Grimmly says:

They dont call interference at all, but call that 5 on Emelin, wow

  27. RAM_TOUGH says:

Will the Habs suffer two shutouts in a row?

  28. rljmartin says:

Watched Emelin hit several times…. No suspension…. Hardly even a penalty… Elbow tucked the whole time…. Embelishment?

  29. Da Hema says:

I think I understand now why Pacioretty is never used in shoot outs. He’d probably just go to the boards and shoot from there.

  30. Storman says:

In other news Delta Burke in charge in Calgary, Feaster Famine

  31. FormalWare says:

Deflated, discombobulated Habs squad. Losing every puck battle by a hair. Looks a lot like the last game. *sigh*

    WWSD (What Would SubbieDoo?)

  32. frontenac1 says:

Parros should beat the sh#t out of Hartnel. It would be good for the Mojo.

  33. Bill says:

Price is holding them in. They’re hanging around. Could come back, never know.

  34. adadi says:

I think it makes sense to dress Murray for every game. Platoon Diaz with the cube instead.

  35. RAM_TOUGH says:

    This building is Price’s Kryptonite

  36. twilighthours says:

Giroux line feasting on desharnais line

  37. Prairienewf says:

Briere Wow what an unbelievable play….by THERRIEN and MB, to be NOT sitting Briere in the press box. Therrien has big ones, very big ones.

  38. RockinRey says:

it really is game to game with this team.

  39. danhabsfan says:

How’s about a line of Gio – DD – Briere, and bench them?

  40. Plekasuares says:

    Plekanec only one working hard..

  41. AH says:

Wow! What a shot by Gionta! What a joke.

  42. slyCH says:

    Gio chose the wrong option.

  43. RAM_TOUGH says:

Jeezus Gionta Pleks was ready for a blast!

  44. adadi says:

Refs really blew the Emelin call. Let’s see if Shanny can complete this charade by suspending Emelin. If there truly was justice he’d suspend Downie for a complete dive.

  45. Rob Maguire says:

Is it just me, or do the Habs pretty much never score on odd-man rushes?

  46. Storman says:

Downie finds another way to make ref’s look ridiculous

  47. Mavid says:

    well well..look who is back…

    Weed Wacker Grandma Smurf

  48. RAM_TOUGH says:

It was one heck of a streak eh! We were in 1st place for a night!

    • danhabsfan says:

You didn’t really think this team would end up first at the end of the season, did you? I expect the playoffs, and hope to get at least into the second round. This team is far from a contender right now. Too small still. Measure against the west top teams.

  49. twilighthours says:

    Donnie is back. Faking?

  50. Danno says:

    holding…. no call…

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs

  51. RAM_TOUGH says:

If the Habs make Mason’s life any easier He will need a lazy boy out there!

  52. adadi says:

I wonder if PK has an injury. He is missing his normal spark. Perhaps MT has completely destroyed his spirit.

  53. Peter Young says:

People suggesting face-punching the Flyers to get things going, the Flyers’ tactic of the 1970s. How things come full circle. Ridiculous. That IS NOT the Canadiens way and never will be.

  54. Habbu says:

And I thought it was gonna be the bestest Christmas in a long time…..not if this keeps up. C’mon boys start with some stridin’ and quit the glidin’

  55. BCG says:

I think this had some impact on the late ‘penalty’ call on Emelin:

Bettman’s New NHL – looking after the business before the Game.

  56. slyCH says:

Time to plop a blob of Nestle toll house cookie dough on a pan and bake some cookies. Won’t even separate the dough, just one massive cookie. Have to get some sort of gratification tonight. Peanut butter chocolate chip. mmmmmmm….

  57. frontenac1 says:

Danny Boy is a snappy dresser. That’s got to count for something.

  58. Reflektor says:

Gonna be fun listening to Shanny describe Downie’s backwards flip dive.

  59. Habilis says:

I don’t get it, we dress Parros, we’re down 2-0 and haven’t scored in like a decade… Wouldn’t this be a good time for a morale boosting session of facepunching?

  60. Storman says:

When the new community mail boxes open up on the corners, imagine how full Danny Briere’s box is going to get, there is no way he goes to the corners to get his mail..

  61. twilighthours says:

Labbe says therrien isn’t happy with briere. Also says there’s no role for him on the team. Shoulda asked HIO in the summer! We knew that.

The briere debacle is definitely on Bergevin. Hope DB can turn it around

    • AH says:

Yeah I was hopeful for Briere, but really he is useless and invisible out there, “no role” is so true, like where does this guy fit?

    • Bill says:

They should have given him a Roy Halladay one-game contract so he could carry the torch and then retire.

Kidding. Briere will be useful when the team runs into injury trouble and in the playoffs.

  62. Willy the bum says:

A winning streak has its consequences. Wish the Habs luck in the coming holidays.

  63. Bill says:

    Replay shows dive.

    Full Breezer 4 Life

  64. Storman says:

I have watched the replay 10 times and i am still not sure if Yemmy’s hit deserves a penalty , yet the ref’s were able to convene after no penalty and decide to give him 5 and a game,, Again NHL officiating sucks beyond belief

  65. frontenac1 says:

The Hall Monitors are taking over.

  66. twilighthours says:

    Emelin tossed for that? Questionable.

Malone threw a much dirtier hit and walked away.

  67. Reflektor says:

Blues are sweetening the evening. 3-0.

  68. Mondou6 says:

Philly broadcast with a pro-fracking commercial. lol.

  69. slyCH says:

2-0, they’re still in it. Gotta see the re-play on Emelin. Looked like he missed him. I’m convinced of a dive here. Even if he did hit him it was not intentional and barely a graze. Bad call.

  70. habfan01 says:

OK- the last 2 games I tried getting in the holiday spirit by drinking eggnog and Jack- a new combo during games. I won’t be doing that again.

  71. John Q Public says:

  72. habsfan0 says:

So, who breaks the Habs goal scoring drought?
    My vote’s with Briere.
