Liveblog: Game 33 – Flyers “edge” woeful Canadiens 2-1

Firing blanks

Last Saturday at the Bell Centre, Alex Galchenyuk scored against the Buffalo Sabres at 18:07 of the second period.

Thursday night in Philadelphia, Galchenyik scored at 19:05 of the third period.

For 140 minutes and eight seconds in between: Zilch.

The Flyers got goals from Michael Raffl in the first period and Claude Giroux in the second.

Steve Mason faced 21 shots, Carey Price 27.

Finally a goal

Alex Galchenyuk beat Steve Mason with 55 seconds left.

It was the Canadiens first goal in 1:40:08.

Too little, too late.

And the drought goes on

Your Montreal Canadiens have not scored a goal in 121:03 of playing time.

Their opponents – Buffalo, L.A. and Philadelphia – have scored nine.

The latest was by Claude Giroux, benefitting from poor zone coverage by Alex Galchenyuk, David Desharnais and Raphael Diaz.

The latter will have time to atone.

Alexei Emelin is out of the game after a head shot on Steve Downie.

During the resultant PP, Carey Price robbed Brayden Schenn.

Not exactly 20 minutes of spine-tingling hockey.

The Flyers got back from Chiacgo at 2:30 a.m.

What's the Canadiens' excuse for four SoG in the period.

Alexei Emelin went to sleep on the only goal of the period, an easy one for Michael Raffl off uncontested passes by Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek.

The Flyers had nine SoG, plus 14 that were blocked and one that missed the net.

Numbers for the Canadiens: 4-3-1

Still scary?

Back in the heyday of the Broad Street Bullies, circa early 1970s, visiting Philadelphia was a daunting prospect for NHL teams.

The Flyers were big. They were bad. They were truculent.

And led by Bobby Clarke and Bernard Parent, Philadelphia was good.

A visit to City of Brotherly Love and Hockey Hate offered the daunting prospect of being beaten on the scoreboard and the ice, prompting some players to develop the Philly Flu in hopes of being scratched.

Times have changed.

The Wells Fargo Center is not the Spectrum. And the current edition of the Flyers is not the pugnacious powerhouse of yesteryear.

But games in Philadelphia are rarely easy for the undersized Canadiens.

The Canadiens beat the Flyers 4-1 at the Bell Centre in the second game of the season, but that was when Claude Giroux was still in his early-going coma.

Since then, Giroux has become Giroux again, Philadelphia has changed coaches and Craig Berube has them playing decent hockey – notwithstanding aWednesday night 7-2 pasting in Chicago.

  7. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Diaz will neither give nor take a hit. Such neutrality befits a Swiss. No more of them, capice Bervgie?

  8. RAM_TOUGH says:

It was a hell of a streak eh!

  9. Rob Maguire says:

    Two minutes for being black?

  10. adadi says:

I was wondering how long before PK got called on a BS call.

  11. Samovich says:

    for what!!!

  12. Ian Cobb says:

This one is a rope-a-dope. By the third it will be ours, no problem!!

    Never in doubt!

  13. slyCH says:

Welcome back Mr.Biter. Did you ever see Guy Maddin’s My Winnipeg? Great documentary, I especially liked the frozen race horses in the river. Unbelievable.

    • Mr. Biter says:

Thanks slyCH. Gonna have to watch it. Going back to Florida Jan 13-22 and going to try to get down to Key West. Any where we can catch a Habs game in a sports bar down there?

  18. savethepuck says:

I expected a lot more life from the boys after the game Tuesday but they look dead out there. DB-DD-MP line looks the same as when they didn’t work early in the season. EGG line at least sustained some pressure in the Flyers zone a few times. I assume Plex Gio and Prust are supposed to be a shut down line, but they didn’t look too good on the Flyers goal. I hope Therrien is throwing the F bombs and they show a lot more passion in the 2nd.

  19. RockinRey says:

Gio? -Gone! DD -Gone! and a few others i cant think of right now

  20. Harditya says:

Tons of idiots posting tonight. And yes Galchenyuk is definitely a bust! Kid is 19 and has 40 odd points in 70 something games. BUST! Haha, man.

  21. RockinRey says:

    @Boone thought Graphics showed 8yrs @ 74 mil though

  22. Mr. Biter says:

Back from Caribbean and freezing my ass of back in Winnipeg (127 degree temp shifts suck), and after 4 periods without a goal, all the usual idiots are back trashing the Habs. Nice time when we were on a hot streak and the Trolls were hiding in their Mom’s basement (right Dude).

    Mr. Biter
    No Guts No Glory

  23. jackbutt says:

    Wow that was brutal!

  24. drail222 says:

I think the only solution is more small, soft, french guys. Seems to be all that’s missing. Not frustrating to watch at all. Honestly what moron cant watch a habs game and realize theyre too soft/weak and lose every puck battle…but who cares, puck possession doesnt lead to scoring chances or goals right..

  25. RAM_TOUGH says:

Last game & tonight. Carey seems to be drifting back to old habits!

  26. habsfan0 says:

I’m convinced Marc Bergevin is looking for a power, high scoring forward.
Trouble is,what homeboy fits this description?

  27. Old Bald Bird says:

Has Patches gone back into hibernation? Well, why not. Everybody else has.

  28. adadi says:

Bartlett says all the line changes are working. I’d say exactly the opposite. Habs have not looked good the last four games.

  29. slyCH says:

Why Parros dressed for this bout at the expense of Bournival I’ll never know.

  30. twilighthours says:

Players drafted in 2012, and their NHL game and total point totals.

  31. slyCH says:

Probably the most “tepid” period of Flyer hockey I’ve ever seen. What happened to them?

  32. Bill says:

We need another win so all these idiots will disappear again.

  33. Marc10 says:

24CH cameras better turn their microphones way down. The coach is going to rip into them… and as well he should. No Excuses.

Paging Gally. What say you pay Mr Mason a visit?

  34. RockinRey says:

So much for puck possession and puck support

  35. donmarco says:

    4 SOG’s? Time for a Therrien a** ripping.

  36. RAM_TOUGH says:

    That goal was on Price.

  37. habsfan0 says:

    Habs haven’t scored a goal in 101:53

  38. Et le but says:

What a difference a week makes, especially with the tone and content of our HIO posters.
    It’s 1-0 folks; chillax a bit

  39. adadi says:

Price down too quickly. He is not right tonight.

  40. RockinRey says:

    At least Prust seems determined!

  41. adadi says:

I’ve been trying to understand why MT has given DD so many chances to find his game but consistently put sticks in Eller’s wheels and has not even tried to give Briere the same kind of chance to improve. The only thing I can think of is that it was MT that convinced MB to sign that ridiculous 4 year contract.

  42. Dunboyne Mike says:

Rinaldo clearly failed physics in high school.

  43. Bill says:

So I oversleep from my post-work nap, wake up, turn on the TV, and within a second, the Flyers score.

I should shut it off, right??

Sorry, not gonna, wake up Habs!

  45. VancouverHab says:

Open ice hits on Murray are a really stupid idea apparently….

  46. RockinRey says:

    Brutal brutal game

  47. drail222 says:

Will somebody please throw a fucking hit?!

  48. RAM_TOUGH says:

Why was Price going cross his crease on that goal?

  49. VancouverHab says:

To state the obvious, I am no expert, but Emelin looked like the least culpable on the goal: at least he was doing *something*.

  50. Plekasuares says:

Galchenyuk was certainly not what we thought

  51. piter says:

You were supposed to get him, no, you were suppose to cover him, no,

  52. the habinator says:

This is where the slump begins.

  53. Dulljerk says:

Someone needs to throw a big hit, fight, spit or something to wake these guys up.

No eternal reward will forgive us for wasting the dawn.

  54. habs-hampton says:

I hope MT reams them during the TV timeout!

  55. Bogie Man says:

They are going to get blown out tonight if they do not start taking away space from these flyer forwards.

  56. RockinRey says:

I know they went on that streak. They can compete but I still dont consider them elite and I still dont like the team as its currently constituted.

  57. Da Hema says:

    Et le but….for Philly….

Habs are flaccid and flat. Losing streak on the way?

  58. ooder says:

2 giveaways by Gionta, one that lead to the faceoff in our zone right before the goal and one to the goal itself

  59. RAM_TOUGH says:

    MT gone by Christmas Eve!

  60. big_green_puffin says:

Plekanec, pick up your man in the slot

  61. Plekasuares says:

    Why put Prust with PLEK???

  62. Samovich says:

    Gorges manhandled again..

  63. Plekasuares says:

    We suck

  64. adadi says:

Price;s body language not good tonight.

  65. Samovich says:

DD line by far the worst so far…

  66. Da Hema says:

    Et le but!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just kidding. Needed to break the monotony….

  67. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

La dee da…cold where you are?

  68. adadi says:

Coach just does not get it. You cannot put Briere on Patches line. Patches is too soft. You need a grinder like Cole or Gallagher or Prust. Even though I prefer to see Prust on the fourth line. He’d do a lot better on Patches line then on Pleks line. I do not get MT’s decision making process. It really does not show a lot of hockey savvey.

  69. GomezForPresident says:

mtl absolutely needs to pull a trade involving a top 6 forward… evander kane makes the most sense… diaz, beaulieu, and a first rounder. done
