Liveblog: Game 33 – Flyers “edge” woeful Canadiens 2-1

SimmondsDD

Firing blanks

Last Saturday at the Bell Centre, Alex Galchenyuk scored against the Buffalo Sabres at 18:07 of the second period.

Thursday night in Philadelphia, Galchenyik scored at 19:05 of the third period.

For 140 minutes and eight seconds in between: Zilch.

Nada.

Bupkes.

The Flyers got goals from Michael Raffl in the first period and Claude Giroux in the second.

Steve Mason faced 21 shots, Carey Price 27.

Finally a goal

Alex Galchenyuk beat Steve Mason with 55 seconds left.

It was the Canadiens first goal in 1:40:08.

Too little, too late.

And the drought goes on

Your Montreal Canadiens have not scored a goal in 121:03 of playing time.

Their opponents – Buffalo, L.A. and Philadelphia – have scored nine.

The latest was by Claude Giroux, benefitting from poor zone coverage by Alex Galchenyuk, David Desharnais and Raphael Diaz.

The latter will have time to atone.

Alexei Emelin is out of the game after a head shot on Steve Downie.

During the resultant PP, Carey Price robbed Brayden Schenn.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Not exactly 20 minutes of spine-tingling hockey.

The Flyers got back from Chiacgo at 2:30 a.m.

What's the Canadiens' excuse for four SoG in the period.

Alexei Emelin went to sleep on the only goal of the period, an easy one for Michael Raffl off uncontested passes by Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek.

The Flyers had nine SoG, plus 14 that were blocked and one that missed the net.

Numbers for the Canadiens: 4-3-1

Still scary?

Back in the heyday of the Broad Street Bullies, circa early 1970s, visiting Philadelphia was a daunting prospect for NHL teams.

The Flyers were big. They were bad. They were truculent.

And led by Bobby Clarke and Bernard Parent, Philadelphia was good.

A visit to City of Brotherly Love and Hockey Hate offered the daunting prospect of being beaten on the scoreboard and the ice, prompting some players to develop the Philly Flu in hopes of being scratched.

Times have changed.

The Wells Fargo Center is not the Spectrum. And the current edition of the Flyers is not the pugnacious powerhouse of yesteryear.

But games in Philadelphia are rarely easy for the undersized Canadiens.

The Canadiens beat the Flyers 4-1 at the Bell Centre in the second game of the season, but that was when Claude Giroux was still in his early-going coma.

Since then, Giroux has become Giroux again, Philadelphia has changed coaches and Craig Berube has them playing decent hockey – notwithstanding aWednesday night 7-2 pasting in Chicago.

  26. 24 Cups says:

Here’s an interesting observation. The Flyers’ 3rd defensive pairing of Meszario and Schenn make a combined 7.6M. That’s pretty rich in today’s NHL. Contrast that to Montreal’s pairing of Murray/Diaz who come in at 2.7M.

  27. Samovich says:

Burke is applying the Samson method of strenght !

  28. HABitat4humanity says:

Murray needs to b a permanent fixture. Habs defense r way too small. Habs need to score first tonight or its over.

Actually, forget Briere. I will be looking for Wee Davey to do something useful. He went back to doing crap all in the last couple of games. Haven’t seen any hustle or effort from him lately.

Also, my bet is that the line of midget 1, midget 2 and Pacioretty doesn’t survive the first period.

  36. billylove says:

Good to have Murray in. As many have said, he should have been in against Kings. Sure those Kings who were on the wrong end of many hits by Murray when he was with the Sharks were glad he wasn’t in the lineup.

    Suavely parried.

  39. Timo says:

RDS said that Bournival was doing some extra practicing today so they think he may be the odd man out tonight.

    @Marc10

So you met Michelle Jenneke in person? Wow I’m envious. Where and how was she? She seems like a sweetheart. I need to know since I’m pretty bummed finding out from a Bill post that my other crush Katarina Witt is lesbian.

    • SmartDog says:

      Michelle Jenneke… WOOOFF!!

      >Katarina Witt is lesbian
      And that bothers you because…?

Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!

    • Marc10 says:

Oh I didn’t meet her. I was in a crowd of runners waiting for the start of the City to Surf race in Sydney. It’s the biggest fun run in the world. You run 14 KM from downtown Sydney to the iconic Bondi Beach. It’s a lot of fun.

Anyhow, 85,000 people run this thing every year, from pro marathoner types who race for a cash prize to walkers and guys in costumes. (A guy on my hockey team borrowed a couple of space suits from AXE Deodorant (Lynx here in Oz) and won a trip to Brazil for walking with his mate in the heat… but I digress…)

Anyway, to get 85K to Bondi Beach in one morning/early afternoon… you need to spread out the start times. And what they do to entertain people while they wait is have local celebrities (usually athletes) walk them through some kind of warm up routine.

We lucked out. There I was near the front and Michelle Jenneke rocks up. And we did her routine to get ourselves ready for the big race. Holy sweet mother of God! She is every bit as gorgeous as what you’ve seen on video or in photographs and can I just say that lycra is a great fabric when worn by world class athletes/super babes.

Sorry about the confusion. Long story short. She’s a total babe.

  49. 24 Cups says:

Here’s the Flyer line-up for tonight.

    Timonen – Coburn
    Grossmann – Streit
    Schenn – Meszaros

    • shiram says:

      I have a similar story…
I was in my teens, and an older buddy of mine had got his hands on a bottle of liquor, Sambuca to be precise. He made a challenge that he would give the bottle for free if someone would try to down in less than 5 gulps, if they could not do it, they’d have to pay the bottle.

This was a party and being young and impressionable, I figured this was my time to shine, and score a free buzz along the way.
I managed to down the bottle in 4 huge gulps.
After the evening festivities I went back home and went to the living room to wait for things to stabilize a little, as the room was swaying wildly.

I got the gut wrenching puke incoming feeling and so raced for the patio door, but the damned thing was locked, I fumbled, but could not get it open in time.

I vomited all over the glass foor, the vomit starting at about the height of my mouth and running down…
At that point I was feeling too awful and just went to sleep.

Next morning my mother kindly asked me to clean up what was left on the glass door, as my dog had came in after me and did a pretty good job of licking all that up, I figure the sweetness of the Sambuca lured the dog in…

      Man’s best friend right there.

  59. Habfan10912 says:

I don’t know about you guys but our friend Timo feeling “meh” about the game tonight is a shocker. :)

  60. Bill says:

MEonn: Really happy for you buddy. That is amazing news. Don’t know how I would have dealt if I was dealing with the same kind of stuff … probably not with the same kind of grace you did. Hope you celebrate like crazy!

  61. Timo says:

    So who sits for Parros?

  62. shiram says:

Gamecenter is a no-go as they blackout the regional games…

  63. Marc10 says:

Three guys to shut down and you win the game: Giroux, Read, Voracek.

Easier said than done, but do-able!

    Go Habs Go!

  64. Maritime Ronn says:

    @ Bill

Continuing on from the other thread, and before I leave for this evening, I wanted you to know that from here, you appear to be someone who practices a life philosophy of (over and above the medical term)
    “Do Not Harm.”

    If so, Bravo for that.

I leave now, because I just heard THE most beautiful word I have EVER heard in my whole life concerning a child…and yes, I may have been somewhat testy lately….
    That word was, ” Benign.”

  65. CHicoHab says:

Why is it when a GM gets axed you have a feeling he will get hired again somewhere. But with Feaster don’t think so?

  67. HabinBurlington says:

Enjoy the game folks, off to visit Front, but I doubt he’s at my saloon tonight.

  68. Bill says:

Everyone come on in, the water’s fine!

  69. krob1000 says:

dang was suppoed to be a reply below

  70. donmarco says:

    Am I first?

  71. 24 Cups says:

Re players voting for team captain. I stand corrected, but I believe the Gionta “appointment” by management was the first time in Hab history that there wasn’t a player vote.

If Gionta walks, the Pleks seems to be the best candidate. If Gionta re-signs for a few years, then it could open the door for one of the younger guys such as MaxPac or Gallagher.

I think that Subban is destined to be like Lafleur. He’ll be the star of the team but never captain material.

  72. adadi says:

I’d like to see Galley with Pleks and Gio.

  73. twilighthours says:

    Do you have two accounts?

  74. donmarco says:

    I’m assuming you’re being sarcastic?

  75. Bill says:

I can’t tell either, never a good sign for the poster.

    Wonder if it will stick?

    Now that’s sarcasm.
