Liveblog: Game 31 – Canadiens win ugly for fifth in a row

There are no style points in hockey

The Canadiens stole one from the NHL's worst team.

Two goals – by Tomas Plekanec and Alex Galchenyuk – within 23 seconds of the second period put the Canadiens up 3-1 and they hung on to win 3-2 – despite being outshot 25-19 in their own building.

They'll have to be better against the mighty Kings Tuesday night, but a win is a win ... and the Canadiens have strung together a season high five Ws in a row.

Brandon Prust, who was the game's First Star, opened the scoring and added an assist on the Plekanec goal.

Travis Moen had two assists.

Tyler Ennis and Zemgus Girgensons scored for the visitors, who frequently had the Canadiens running around their own end in abject confusion.

Too close

What a third period for P.K.

First he gets turned into a pretzel by Zemgus Girgensons, who beat carey Price for Buffalo's second goal.

But the pluggers gutted out a W.

It took only 19 seconds for Brandon Prust to pot the first goal of the game.

The Sabres equalized during a brutal defensive shift by the Tomas Plekanec line. Sustaines Sabres pressure produced an unstoppable shot by Tyler Ennis.

Then the Canadiens took control with two in 23 seconds: Plekanec's 11th, on a beautiful set-up by Prust, and Alex Galchenyuk's eighth, a one-timer off a perfect pass by Andrei Markov.

Sabres had a 12-11 shot advantage.

Better than Nytol

And not habit-forming.

Buffalo outshot the Canadiens 5-4 over 20 sleep-inducing minutes.

Liverpool had more than 20 shots today.

In soccer.

I'm just saying ...

We interrupt this string of challenging opponents to bring you ...

We interrupt this string of challenging opponents to bring you ...

The Buffalo Sabres.

Dead last in the NHL with a a goal differential, despite Ryan Miller, of minus-39 – which will be the temperature in Hell when this once-proud franchise is a Cup contender again.

Your Montreal Canadiens are 8-1-1 in their last 10. They are coming off an emotional win over Boston Thursday night and will be looking  for a season-high fifth straight W.

All portents, then, point to a Sabres upset.

The visitors are not bereft of talent. There's Miller and, for now, Matt Moulson. The guy in the photo, Tyler Myers, has the tools to be a great defenceman.

But Buffalo, under new president of hockey operations Pat Lafontaine, is in full-on rebuild mode.

And it might take a while.

Puck drops 7:10ish.

  22. Lafleurguy says:

Parros, and to a lesser extent, Murray in, and White and Bouillon out has more to do with the Sabres being the no. 30 team than any rough game potential. Opportunity to give important “physical guys” some playing time before the “tough” (i.e. Habs = underdogs) teams come up. Bouillon and White must be peeved.

  25. ffenliv says:

I watched that hit in Drouin earlier. I don’t understand how that’s non a suspension. The guy who hit him was looking at numbers the entire way. There was no last-minute turn. And he was out a bit from the boards. Really dangerous hit. That kid was lucky not to get 20 games, nevermind nothing at all.

  26. Habfan17 says:

Has anyone ever seen this Eklund in public? Maybe he is really P.J. Stock! He never has anything to say worth hearing either!

  28. twilighthours says:

Anybody watching Pleky give it to PK during the interview?

  29. Bill says:

I wonder if Eklund is aware that Reilly can’t be traded? Probably not.

  30. Bill says:

Cal: I usually do, but sometimes jokes fly right over my pointy little head, buddy.

  31. NLhabsfan says:

Why make a trade when your team is performing well.I think it would be a huge mistake to trade Subban..Improve the team but at what cost.

    • twilighthours says:

No one with any credibility or sense is suggesting trading PK.

      • Habfan17 says:

If someone wants to make a trade suggestion, how about trading DD and Gorges to Buffalo for Myers. That would give the Habs a righty for the 2nd pairing. It is a bit of a risk that he doesn’t turn things around, but it would be worth it and the Habs have the depth to take the chance. Imagine
        Tinordi, Subban
        Beaulieu, Myers
        Emelin, Nygren

Not to mention Dietz, Pateryn, Ellis and Stoner!

  32. Bill says:

    Budaj starting tonight?

  33. Bill says:

I don’t think the 2-3 teams in each division necessarily play each other. They can cross over depending on point seedings.

My understanding is this: the division winners play the wildcats teams (which might have fewer points than teams ahead of them!).

The other teams are matched up by points. Meaning Montreal could play a team from the Metro division in the first round.

    Correct me if I’m wrong.

  34. jols101 says:

Tarnasky with a bonehead 4 minute penalty. Could be costly.

    • B says:

The boxscore lists it as “Double minor – Butt-ending (attempt)”. The attempt part sounds odd, kind of like he missed but still got a double minor for it.

      –Go Habs Go!–

  35. Plekasuares says:

So now the rumor is subban for mackinnon

    Like that will happen

  36. Bill says:

Lafleurguy: nothing wrong with an award honouring clean, gentlemanly play. Lady Byng has been won by Gretzky, both Hulls, Ron Francis, Pavel Datsyuk, and even Stan Mikita (how??). I think it’s a great award. They should rename it the Jean Beliveau award: then we’d be all for it!

  37. Plekasuares says:

    Myers sucks imo

    • ffenliv says:

Myers is a funny case. So much potential, and a good rookie season. Then the regression set in. Now he’s just a useless big body.

      • Plekasuares says:

Watch how bad he is tonight

        • ffenliv says:

I’ve seen some clips of him this year. Kinda sad to see how he has gone so far in reverse. Was hoping he’d be a big body for Team Canada’s blueline for 15 years.

Maybe he needs a new home. Though, to be fair, that could probably be said of the entire franchise right now.

          • Max says:

Wouldn’t matter as he’s a yank anyway and wouldn’t be eligible for Canada

          • ffenliv says:

How did I not know that? Man, I could have sworn I had memories of him playing for Canada at the WJRs. I turned 32 yesterday, and clearly that was the cut-off line for losing my memory.

  38. naweed235 says:

If there is going to be a trade, M.B. should be doing his best to get his hands on Simmonds in Philly. This guy is exactly the type of player that would make the habs an instant contender.

  39. Bill says:

The Habas have three Dmen who should be about ready to graduate to the NHL next year: Pateryn, Tinordi, and Beaulieu.

How is that gonna work? I can’t see the team breaking in even two rookies at once.

If there is a trade soon, I’d expect one of those guys to be part of it. I have this nasty feeling it’ll be Beaulieu. That would be a mistake.

    • Mark C says:

Normally I would agree, but if the Habs top-4 is Subban, Markov, Emelin, and Gorges then I think a team can carry 2 rookies, especially if they are as talented as Tinman and Nate the great. Assuming they are ready, they’ll both have over 10 NHL games and 100+ AHL games.

  40. jols101 says:

Beaulieu flying out there tonight. Such a gifted skater. He looks great.

  41. Bill says:

B: You’re assuming Kristo is being completely forthcoming. That is usually not the case when players or managers discuss behind the scenes activities.

    • B says:

You have a point. I was thinking he would not mention it or would just dance around it if asked rather than offering an outright lie like “I don’t know what really took place”, but anything is possible I suppose. The truth is out there :)

      –Go Habs Go!–

  42. Psycho29 says:

WOW….Zac Rinaldo of the Flyers….0:04 of ice time and 27 penalty minutes.

    Flyers lose to Dallas 5-1..

  43. Bill says:

B: the new playoff seeding system is dumb and anti-competitive, I have no clue why the GMs agreed to it.

    • ffenliv says:

Man, I can’t even figure it out. I thought it was the old system, just adjusted for new ways to qualify. When you – or someone else? – posted potential matchups, my brain started to smoke.

    • It’s a load of crap. How can you justify a division like the Metro sending two teams into playoffs which are potentially lower in the standings than even those in the wild card spots? Stunningly short sighted and completely idiotic.

      Defense wins championships

    • WAR72 says:

Seems everything coming out of the nhl is non-sensical.
      Division names.
      Division break down of cities.
      Penalty inconsistencies.
      Fighting…or gooning, rather.
      Playoff seeding.
      Loser points.
Games in hand of 4 or more.
      Ya ya, I’m complaining

  44. frontenac1 says:

    2-0 Dogs in 2nd.

  45. durocher says:

Since we’re talking MTL-COL trade, how about Bourque for McGinn and a 3rd? McGinn is falling out of favor in Colorado, has a lower cap hit, and is far more physical (he has 56 hits in 24 games, as compared to 25 hits in 24 games for Bourque).

    Extras: White, Parros

  46. munch17 says:

Beautiful pass from Thomas to St. Pierre. 2-0 Dogs.

  47. Fransaskois says:

    In terms of rumours….

There are many reports outside of Eklund linking MTL-COL primarily due to the fact that MTL has had scouts at nearly every game COL has played…… the same is true for rumours between MTL-CLB.

I don’t think there’s any truth in what Eklund has said about specific deals or players but there is secondary evidence that MTL has extensive interest in the players/coaches/systems on both CLB’s and COL’s rosters.

    • Habfan17 says:

The Fourth Period is saying that Bergevin is looking to make a splash and trade for a true first line star! Statsny’s name has come up, however, I don’t think the Habs need another centre. I would rather they get a winger. If they did get Statsny, they would have to move at least one centre and I would hate to see them trade Eller right now.

  48. WAR72 says:

    Division standings…whats the point?
Is it not the top eight who get in.
To have a picture of who is in playoffs you have to check conference standings. No?
Why waste my time on tsn app. With division standings always on display first?
Is there a reason why there is such disparity in games played per team? Some teams hold up to 5 games in hand?
Is it so difficult to keep teams within 1-3 games of each other?
Eklund is not the problem, hes finding ways to make money of the sheep. Its the idiots who keep regurgitating his bs that are the problem.

  49. Bill says:

Cal, I believe pied refers to a many-coloured garment, formerly worn by jesters and entertainers.

    • Habfan17 says:

      This is from Hockeyfutures;

Scott Zurevinski, C/W, Senior, Quinnipiac University – A 6’2, 215 lbs power forward that has developed into one of college hockey’s best checking wingers. The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Vancouver Canucks are among the NHL teams that have expressed interest in Zurevinski.

  50. B says:

“I don’t know what really took place, but I heard a bunch of rumors around draft time that I was maybe going to get traded, so I knew that it was a possibility,” said Kristo. “It ended up not happening at the Draft, but then two days later I got traded to New York.”

    –Go Habs Go!–

    • The Jackal says:

Well hindsight will be 20/20 with the Kristo move.
Personally, me being just a fan who does nothing about what goes on backstage, I wish we had held on to the kid, but I do feel MB is doing a great job overall. Nonetheless, that particular trade makes no sense to me.

      Hockey sine stercore tauri.

      • B says:

It’s way too early to judge the trade. I posted the comment because many here suggested that there was some kind of a deal made when they signed Kristo that he would then be traded. The comment from Kristo does not sound to me like a guy who had made such a deal.

Fournier made the mistake of dropping them with Staubitz. Not a great idea for the young guy.

    • Ron says:

Fournier did that dangerous take down flip on Staubitz that a few appear to be using in fights lately. I’m surprised Staubitz went after Fournier. Why not wait for Tarnasky. This game could get ugly..

      • jols101 says:

I hate that take down. So dangerous. I’ve never seen it before until the Parros/Orr fight. At first I gave Orr the benefit of the doubt, thinking he just lost his balance, but now it seems like a tactic used way to often. BTW, this game could get really ugly.

Hope the players aren’t thinking like us fans, things seem easy right now. Beware of that comfortable feeling where you start taking things for granted.

  63. Maritime Ronn says:

The Buffalo Sabres are now the worst coached team by far in the NHL today.
There is NO DOUBT about that amongst hockey people, regardless of some fan misplaced sentiment sold by some media savy recent hirings.

You will see that tonight…over and above the goon crap that the coach will try to employ to camouflage his incompetence.

    Habs by at least 2.
The only burden facing the Habs will be to try and figure out the Sabress utter confussion in any aspect of the game

    • jols101 says:

I think the problem is a lack of talent in Buffalo rather than Ted Nolan being a bad coach.

Buffalo is stacked with great prospects but right now they have very little in the way of quality NHL talent.

    • Caesar says:

Nolan is a good coach, The Sabres will start gelling sooner or later under him.I hope it’s not tonight.

      • Maritime Ronn says:

Nolan is not a good coach.
In his Buffalo days the first time around, everybody knew Donnie Lever was the brains and Nolan always played the ‘poor me’ card and other BS.
He never lasted long anywhere because it was always about him….except when the camera was on.
Go talk to the Islander players when he was there.
They had a party when he was fired.

    • Lafleurguy says:

Merrytimes, they have company. Islanders perplexingly don’t put up much of a fight these days despite stretching Penguins to six games, last playoffs. Dallas Eakins may go the way of John MacLean who was replaced by Jacques Lemaire. Captain Kirk isn’t doing wonders with a healthy Cam Ward, and three Stahls and a Semin. Not sure if Noel coaches as well as he dishes out sarcasm. Carlyle may very well regress to his mean (the Ducks are much better without a major overhaul of their roster). Anyway, I hope Nolan does well but of course, not tonight.

Realize that Eklund has a pretty big credibility problem. That said, I have always liked Ryan O’Reilly and I would rather go after a player like him than waste picks or prospects on a 40 year old rental. Just sayin’

    “Elever le flambeau!…Raise the Torch!”

    • Habfan17 says:

Earlier, Eklund reported, ” rumoured” that Roy was set to put a big Roy type trade together with Montreal sending 2 players to the Habs and the Habs would send 4 players to Colorado and then that would set up secondary trades. I take anything Eklund says with a huge grain is salt!

      • Stevie.Ray says:

        Pacific ocean sized salt.

At best, Eklund is a place where you can find legitimate rumours (oxymoron) that credible insiders or journalists have posted that he has stolen and passed off as his own.

At worst, he is making shit up in order to get page views so that he can either make money or cover his massive insecurities. He posts about the Habs every week as a way to get passionate fans to click on his posts. He is a fraud. Don’t feed the frauds.

        • Habfan17 says:

I am with you. I think he become popular back around the time of the 2004 lockout. You would think his site would be shut down by now! Has he had one rumour right?

    • Stevie.Ray says:

O’Reilly can’t be traded until February correct? And even then, I highly doubt Colorado would have matched the contract if they intended on trading him away the next season.

  67. Reflektor says:

Lets not forget the Sabres last win against the powerhouse Leaf.

  68. Lafleurguy says:

Nice balanced scoring the Habs have had this season. No talk of oeufs for a few weeks, so they had their brief 15 fame-minutes in the first dozen games. Not the no. 1 line anymore. Pacioretty is the closest to a sniper on the team, so his has to be considered a co-number one line. There was also the stretch when Bournival clicked with Pleks and Captain. These gutsy Habs do it by committee and swarm. I don’t think Jagr would fit in with a “top nine” concept of attack, and how’s his defense? How much would he have resembled the Habs of the third period in the Bruins game?

“May you live in interesting times.”

  69. GGtheHab says:

Hoping for a laugher like 5-1, had enough nail biters lately..

  70. jols101 says:

Valeri Nichushkin (sp) is adapting to the NHL in a hurry. 1 goal 3 assists against the Flyers in the 3rd period. 4 goals 11 assists so far this season as an 18 year old. Seguin with the hat trick.

The Dallas Stars got themselves a beauty. I think he went 11th overall. Makes you wonder what the teams picking 5th to 10th were thinking?

    • Phil C says:

      Probably afraid of the KHL.

Dallas actually has a nice core of young players with Seguin, Benn,Nichushkin, Chaisson, Eakin, and Dillon. A few more pieces and they could be good for a while.

      • jols101 says:

Ya, I agree on the KHL scare being a factor. However, when a kid is 6’4 and skates like the wind and has elite skills you would think a team would roll the dice. I think the KHL factor is over-played. Oh well, other teams loss is Dallas’ gain. That line of Benn/Seguin/Nichushkin will be wreaking havoc for many years in the NHL.

    • CH Marshall says:

Yeah I thought for sure he’d go top 5. No way he would have dropped down to our slot, but I was hoping we’d trade up to get him or Mantha. Anyways, that’s as far as my draft expertise goes lol

Also, there’s precious little to choose from between Gallagher and Marchand, except the colour of the sweater.

Out of line EOHF…you can make your point without denigrating women…c’mon man

  91. Stuck_in_To. says:

Sorry but I have no idea what you mean. My woman has more honour than that as do most women I know. Thornton looks like a total psycho thug which is what he has always been.

  92. The Jackal says:

Had Orpik sucker punched Thornton would you be cheering that?

It’s a shameful part of the game, regardless of the team or player.
Marchand is a punk but there are tons of agitators in the league, they just trash talk and try to throw players off their game, they don’t “deserve” brain trauma.

And Thornton should be reprimanded, no doubt, but he too just probably gave a guy a concussion, not to mention the act alone. Can’t just have two standards for these things – Bruin and non-Bruin.

No kidding. And some people here were picking on Bill because he wrote he wasn’t going to shed any tears over Pacioretty’s hit. The Bruins are absolute slime — but all that starts with the coach.

  95. Dunboyne Mike says:

Yikes, ff! Don’t usually disagree with your posts, but have to point out that your last sentence is a matter of opinion and not of perspective. Nor could I ever cheer Marchand’s malicious mind-set and contempt for player safety even were he playing for the Habs or Canada.

  96. twilighthours says:

Whoa, absolutely not! Gallagher has never made a golf swing at an eliminated team. He’s never slew-footed. He’s never submarined an opposing player who was trying to check him. He’s never punched a Sedin in the head 10 times in a row just “because I could.”

There is far more dissimilar between the two than similar.

  97. Bill says:

    Gallagher doesn’t:
-throw low-bridge hits at people’s knees
-dish out sneaky behind the play elbows
-pull crap like throwing water bottles on the ice to delay the game

The difference between the two is night and day.

It’s just awfully hard to feel bad for any of them. For me at least.

Look man, use “cowardly” from now on. Or “gutless.” Either of those is better.
