Liveblog: Game 29: Budaj wins on the road again as Eller, DD score in Shootout

Crazy game

Two defensive teams, right?

The Devils and Canadiens combined for five third-period goals before Lars Eller and David Desharnais secured two points in the Shootout.

With the Canadiens aheda 1-0 on Brian Gionta's first-period goal, the home team tied it up and took the lead on third-period goals by Andrei Loktionov and Michael Ryder.

Then after Eller made it 2-2, P.K. Subban put the puck on Patrik Elias's stick and the Devils' veteran made no mistake.

A 3-2 lead with 66 seconds left on home ice?

Over, right?

With 37 seconds left, Desharnais deflected Gionta's shot past Cory Schneider to send the game into overtime.

After being beaten by Reid Boucher – playing in his first NHL game – in the Shootout, Peter Budaj made saves on Travis Zajac and Elias for the W.

New Jersey outshot the Canadiens 34-30.

On to the Shootout

Max Pacioretty had his stick explode on him while steaming toward the NJ net in OT.

Brendan Gallagher hit the post behind Cory Schneider.

The Shootout

Boucher (first game in NHL): Goal!

Eller: Goal!

Zajac: Save

DD: Goal!

Elias: Save!

Dull game goes nuts

Four third-period goals?

After Andrei Loktionov and Michael Ryder made it 2-1, Lars Eller broke out of a slump with his eighth of the season.

With 66 secopnds left and OT looming, P.K. Subban coughed up the puck to Patrik Elias, who snapped it past Peter Budaj.

Then with Budaj on the bench, David Desharnais deflected Brian Gionta's shot past Cory Schneider.

On to OT

Scoreless second

No goals, but New Jersey enjoyed long stretches of puck possession.

Shots were 10-7, the Canadiens' total boosted by a late-period flurry that saw Cory Schneider get lucky on a Tomas Plekanec blast.

The opposite of Monday

The visiting team outshot the guys in red jerseys 13-9.

And the Canadiens got a lovely goal by Brian Gionta, off a perfect feed by Daniel Brière. It was the first goal on Cory Schneider in his last three home starts.

The goal came after NJ's Eric Gelinas rang one off the post behind Peter Budaj.

It's déja vu all over again

For the second time in three nights, your Montreal Canadiens play New Jersey.

This time the game will be in the Devils' home barn, the Prudential Centre in Newark.

Other than a different locale, little will change.

As has been the case for decades, New Jersey will play disciplined defensive hockey. They will minimize errors, take away the middle of the ice in their zone, frustrate their opponents and anaesthetize fans.

It almost worked at the Bell Centre Monday night.

The Canadiens won 3-2 despite being outshot 30-17.

(And if you thought that was impressive, how about Dallas beating Chicago 4-3 Tuesday night while being outshot 50-18.)

Good piece on George Parros

    RDS is making fun of the Devils because they haven’t scored in SO yet. We only scored twice and won once…

  44. Prairienewf says:

    No offense to Budaj but Therrien should put Price in for shoot out

  45. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

    We suck in shootouts…don’t we??

  46. Bill says:

    Good lord. So Subban lost control of a puck. It happens to everyone. Not exactly an indictment of his defensive play, which has been great all year.

  47. Adidess says:

    We’re in a lucky phase right now, no question! We had no business winning points here…

  48. johnnylarue says:

    Aaaaaand here comes the part of the game where the team who can’t score goals suddenly looks like a team full of Wayne Gretzkys..

    (Hoping the 0-in-1276 shootouts Habs prove me wrong…)

  49. duffy says:

    PK in the shoot out !!!

  50. Mondou6 says:

    Devils 0-4 in the shootout this year. Great.

  51. MICP says:

    Bloody shootout

    We suck at them and they have Elis, Jagr……..

    We know Plecs will shoot… who else?

    Ill take Devils to win it. At least we got a point

  52. slyCH says:

    OT, Shoot-out, they’ll be well rested for the Bruins getting lap dances at our strip-clubs at the moment.

  53. Rudy says:

    Last shootout wasn’t great here in DC

  54. Samovich says:

    Check the sticks before the shootout!

  55. durocher says:

    PK’s rushes can be counterproductive if he gets in too deep without passing it off — everyone else is standing still and watching him, and the other team takes the puck and goes the other way

  56. monmick says:

    DD, Gally, Gionta…

    ~~~> Mathematically eliminated…
  57. twilighthours says:
    OT was fun
  58. icemachine says:
    Is there 3 stars to pick in this game?
  59. Mondou6 says:
    The Devils’ goalie has been terrible tonight, if we can’t score on him in the shootout, it’s pretty lame.
  60. Et le but says:
    Almost fitting that this game go to a shootout
  61. Habbu says:
    Is his stick manufactured in Toronto?
  62. habsfaninboston says:
    How did Max’s stick break on that play?
  63. Reflektor says:
    Is Boone always this negative?
  64. RockinRey says:
    They have to get rid of the bloody shootout. Start with 5 on 5 remove a guy and then go to 3 on 3 if you have to.
  65. monmick says:
    Typical Habs-Devils game…
    ~~~> Mathematically eliminated…

  66. slyCH says:

    Gally hits the bar

  67. Habbu says:

    That was a penalty shot FFS
