Liveblog: Game 29: Budaj wins on the road again as Eller, DD score in Shootout

Crazy game

Two defensive teams, right?

The Devils and Canadiens combined for five third-period goals before Lars Eller and David Desharnais secured two points in the Shootout.

With the Canadiens aheda 1-0 on Brian Gionta's first-period goal, the home team tied it up and took the lead on third-period goals by Andrei Loktionov and Michael Ryder.

Then after Eller made it 2-2, P.K. Subban put the puck on Patrik Elias's stick and the Devils' veteran made no mistake.

A 3-2 lead with 66 seconds left on home ice?

Over, right?

With 37 seconds left, Desharnais deflected Gionta's shot past Cory Schneider to send the game into overtime.

After being beaten by Reid Boucher – playing in his first NHL game – in the Shootout, Peter Budaj made saves on Travis Zajac and Elias for the W.

New Jersey outshot the Canadiens 34-30.

On to the Shootout

Max Pacioretty had his stick explode on him while steaming toward the NJ net in OT.

Brendan Gallagher hit the post behind Cory Schneider.

The Shootout

Boucher (first game in NHL): Goal!

Eller: Goal!

Zajac: Save

DD: Goal!

Elias: Save!

Dull game goes nuts

Four third-period goals?

After Andrei Loktionov and Michael Ryder made it 2-1, Lars Eller broke out of a slump with his eighth of the season.

With 66 secopnds left and OT looming, P.K. Subban coughed up the puck to Patrik Elias, who snapped it past Peter Budaj.

Then with Budaj on the bench, David Desharnais deflected Brian Gionta's shot past Cory Schneider.

On to OT

Scoreless second

No goals, but New Jersey enjoyed long stretches of puck possession.

Shots were 10-7, the Canadiens' total boosted by a late-period flurry that saw Cory Schneider get lucky on a Tomas Plekanec blast.

The opposite of Monday

The visiting team outshot the guys in red jerseys 13-9.

And the Canadiens got a lovely goal by Brian Gionta, off a perfect feed by Daniel Brière. It was the first goal on Cory Schneider in his last three home starts.

The goal came after NJ's Eric Gelinas rang one off the post behind Peter Budaj.

It's déja vu all over again

For the second time in three nights, your Montreal Canadiens play New Jersey.

This time the game will be in the Devils' home barn, the Prudential Centre in Newark.

Other than a different locale, little will change.

As has been the case for decades, New Jersey will play disciplined defensive hockey. They will minimize errors, take away the middle of the ice in their zone, frustrate their opponents and anaesthetize fans.

It almost worked at the Bell Centre Monday night.

The Canadiens won 3-2 despite being outshot 30-17.

(And if you thought that was impressive, how about Dallas beating Chicago 4-3 Tuesday night while being outshot 50-18.)

Good piece on George Parros

    4 on 4 is awesome!!!

  2. Rudy says:

    Happy for Budaj.

  3. HardHabits says:

Gionta off of Pacioretty off of DD.

  4. NLhabsfan says:

That’s the second time DD scored like that.

  5. Rudy says:

How are they going to be able to play tomorrow night

  6. Et le but says:

Happy that the game didn’t end on PK’s gaffe…imagine the fodder

  7. Samovich says:

All things considered one point is a steal…and let the sport media gliteratti be once again replenished with fresh P.K speculation. That was an awful giveaway

  8. Habbu says:

OK…….PK……a blast in OT……one that Schneider will still be looking for tomorrow.

  9. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

Lamecenter has it as a 2-3 final. NHL SUX.

  10. SportsFan31 says:

This overtime is going to be way too suspenseful

  11. christophor says:

PK’s gaffe was just a random slip off the stick, not the result of a risky play. Anyway, the idea that PK is less than dominant defensively is unfounded.

  12. sirs81 says:

Lol I ran in the kitchen to grab a beer and my wife yells they scored its 3-3 lol

  13. habs-fan-84 says:

Wow. That’s all I can say.
    I’ll take the point.

  14. 25insight says:

Subban should clean DD’s gear and get his skates sharpened after the game.

  15. AH says:

You know who DD looks like with that ‘stache? Randall “Tex” Cobb, lol!!!

  16. Et le but says:

Happy with the point…thought (like Boone) that we had lost this game twice

  17. RockinRey says:

Robinson would have been a nice mentor for PK in the D zone. He would win the Norris every year.

  18. Tyhudg says:

Has DD Captured back the hearts of any Habs fans yet? I hope so… he legitimately looks like he has turned the corner, something his comparison, Gomez, was NEVER able to do. I am very happy for the guy.

  19. Marc10 says:

    That’s insane. What a finish!
Well done to Gio and DD. PK owes them a beer.

Now let’s get the OT loser point.
