Liveblog: Game 28 – Canadiens beat nemesis 3-2

Bourque

He's human!

The great Martin Brodeur was beaten three times on a mere 17 shots.

Rene Bourque's sixth goal of the season, in the second period, erased a 1-0 lead fashioned by Steve Bernier in a first period dominated by the visitors.

After red-hot Max Pacioretty's 10th made it 2-1, Michael Ryder tied it up six minutes into the third period.

Then a bizarre sequence of bad passes ended with Alex Galchenyuk – benched for the third period against Toronto on Saturday – using his great hands to tap the winner past Brodeur.

Carey Price made 27 saves and preserved his stellar 2.00 GAA.

The Canadiens' penalty killers threw another shutout at NJ's three power plays.

Kid bags winner

Against Toronto on Saturday, Alex Galchenyuk spent the third period on the Canadiens' bench.

Against New Jersey, the 19-year-old scored the winning goal.

Martin Ryder had tied the game at 2-2.

.600 save percenatge

The great Martin Brodeur faced five shots in the second period.

Two went in.

Rene Bourque's sixth got the Canadiens on the board.

Then the home team went without a shot on goal for more than eight minutes before the red-hot Max Pacioretty blasted a power-play feed from Andrei Markov past Brodeur.

Shots were11-5 for the visitors ... exactly what they were in the first period.

Total domination

New Jersey outshot the home team 11-5 and got the only goal of the first period when Steve Bernier tipped home Marek Zidlicky's point shot.

The Devils had wide-open looks from the slot all through the period, as the Canadiens stumbled around their own end, unable to win puck battles.

Michel Therrien will have much to say between periods.

Him again

Martin Brodeur grew up in St. Leonard, a multi-ethnic district of Montreal.

His late father, Denis Brodeur, was a photographer for the Journal de Montréal.

But through the course of a first-ballot-cinch Hall of Fame career, the  New Jersey Devils goaltender has displayed little nostalgic affection for his hometown ... or at least for fans of the local hockey team.

Brodeur's lifetime statistics against the Canadiens: 44-18-6, 9 shutouts,1.83 goal-againstaverage, .930 save percentage.

And some of Brodeur's  best performances are on Montreal ice.

So despite recent stellar play by NJ heir apparent Cory Schneider, who posted a shutout of Buffalo on Saturday, the homeboy starts when New Jersey visits the Bell Centre Monday night.

The Canadiens begin a busy week: four games in six nights, including a return visit to New Jersey on Wednesday and Boston at the Bell Centre on Thursday.

Michaël Bournival draws back in for George Parros and will play with Brandon Prust and Travis Moen.

Good thing NJ started their second stringer in goal. That guy’s a sieve.

  2. Maritime Ronn says:

That goes down as a 1/2 steal for Price.
The other 1/2 belongs to Subban and his stick that saved 2 sure goals when he played goalie.

  3. Storman says:

Briere 7:40min TOI he has really got zero trust from MT and deservedly so, Zero compete, he is not willing to work hard unless its to get an impending scoring importunity, will be a problem for sure as team seems to be getting tighter, Briere will have to compete and buy in or will become a big distraction. I am sorry to say looks like concussions have taken away some of his will to compete and get involved in any of the cycling and hitting in the corners.

  4. The Jackal says:

Not missing Ryder anymore are we?

    Martin Ryder?

  6. 25Stanleycups says:

The second goal was all Desharnais. We dont win the game tonight, without his hard nosed play. Well deserved first star! Go Habs! Way to exorcise the Devil himself!

  7. Reflektor says:

Nice to see #27chuk get the winner. Love that kid.

  8. Habbu says:

This calls for a celebratory dinner…..a tumbler of scotch along with a protein bar!

  9. Un Canadien errant says:

So, just to ask the question, does this qualify as Carey “stealing a game”?

PK should have gotten a star for stopping two sure goals.

Another random observation: yes, they still suck, but I find myself hating the refs a lot less often this season.

    Faint praise where it’s due…!

  12. Blondie says:

Nice to get the win though it would be nicer to do it with fewer heroics required next time.

  13. AH says:

So did Briere play at all in the third? Did MB sign him so he could be a 4th line pine rider??

    • Peter Young says:

There was one point where Briere went in for the puck in the Devils’ end and appeared to shrink from any physical contact, giving the puck to the Devils’ defenseman unmolested. Hardly saw him after that, if at all.

  14. 4loorplay says:

yes! called it just dont agree on 3 stars..price was 1st star tonight.

    Nirvana is earned…

  15. Iceberg84 says:

Thrilled about the win, but does anyone else think the Canadiens just CAN’T score into an empty net? I’d bet that if there were a stat for empty net opportunities and goals scored, the Habs would be close to if not dead last in the NHL over the last few seasons.

  16. The Jackal says:

Oh hey… when’s the last time Carey Price stole a game for the Habs? Oh… wait a second!

On that note… is Patches still soft? Is Eller?
    Is MT still an idiot?
Does MB have to “do it?”

Is this one considered as Price stealing one?

    Waiting patiently for #25

  18. Bill says:

Desharnais needs to keep the ‘stache. If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.

  19. Maritime Ronn says:

A symbolic passing of the Canada goaltending Olympic Torch from Brodeur to Price

  20. Rugger says:

Is it me or has Pleks improved a lot on the face offs this year? Haven’t looked at the stats but it seems like he wins the key ones now.

  21. Adidess says:

Subbie, not a star? What game are these people watching!?

  23. Habbu says:

Thursday will be our third game in four nights and the Bruins will be on four days rest……who would do such a thing?

  24. Danno says:

It was a grindy, gritty, chippy kind of game.

    Two big points!!!

  37. Et le but says:

  38. Storman says:

I wonder if Pleky and Ron Burgundy shop for turtle necks at the same store

  54. johnnylarue says:

  56. Storman says:

Anyone who might get frustrated or impatient with Galchenyuk’s learning curve and his ability to start to dominate with his superior skill set should remember , he still is eligible to be playing for Team USA at the World Junior Championships in Sweden in a few weeks time, he is 19 , and he is going to be a star..

  65. RAM_TOUGH says:

How much pay do these equipment guys get?

    Guts-Glory-Ram

  66. johnnylarue says:

Not sure what the shot count is at, but if the boys pull this off this will rank among their more Leafs-esque wins of the season.

  67. B says:

Prior to the start of this game, the Habs averaged an identical 30.7 shots per game and 30.7 shots against per game.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  68. Prairienewf says:

DEsharnais has been good all night but Gallagher’s forechecking set the tone for his line and the following which scored

  69. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

But on the bright side…pk has been stellar.

  70. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Pleky does that too much. Misses the net on an odd man rush thereby foregoing the scoring chance on a rebound.

  71. Samovich says:

3 goals on 15 shots against Brodeur in MTL!! play the lotto folks!

  72. slapshot777 says:

Well Boone you were wondering if the Habs could score 3 goals on Brodeur. There is your answer. A resounding YESSSSSSSS!!!!!

  73. twilighthours says:

Plex made the right play. Passing to Moen would not have been productive.

  74. Storman says:

    Red Bull just kicked in??

  75. Arrow77 says:

So I criticized Bourque earlier and he scored. As a joke, I wrote a post saying that Galchenyuk sucked. Should I be scared of my new found power?
