Liveblog: Game 25 – Canadiens top Buffalo 3-1 for fourth in a row

A win, but not easy

The Buffalo Sabres are the worst team in the Eastern Conference.

But they have a great goaltender in Ryan Miller, and your Montreal Canadiens have a habit of making things difficult in games they should win easily.

A third-period goal by Brendan Gallagher gave his team some breathing room after the Sabres came back from a 2-0 deficit to make the game interesting.

Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais (also on a power play) staked the CH to their early lead.

Andrei Markov assisted on all three goals.

Matt Moulson scored late in the second period for the home team's only goal.

Carey Price made 24 saves.

The Canadiens had 31 shots on Miller.

Gallagher seals the deal

Brendan Gallagher's ninth of the year was a smokin' one-timer during a late-game power play.

The Canadiens outshot Buffalo 15-11 over the final 20 minutes.

The worst lead in hockey

David Desharnais tipping in P.K. Subban's shot on a Canadiens power play made it 2-0.

But the Sabres didn't fold.

Drew Stafford bodied Subban off the puck behind the Canadiens' net and fed Matt Moulson, unaccountably all alone in front of Carey Price..

As he is wont to do, Moulson buried the chance for his ninth of the season.

Buffalo outshot the Canadiens 10-7.

And the first-period goal we thought was Andrei Markov's hit Alex Galchenyuk's leg on its way past Ryan Miller, giving the kid six on the season.

Markov buries one

Using Alex Galchenyuk crashing Ryan Miller's crease as a decoy, Lars Eller beat Drew Stafford and fed a perfect drop pass to Andrei Markov, who fired a shot that ticked in off Galchenyuk's leg..

The Canadiens killed a four-minute high-sticking penalty to Galchenyuk and will start the second period on a power play.

Shots were 9-4 Canadiens, but Luke Adam missed an open net for Buffalo and Ville Leino rang one off the post past Carey Price.

The Sabres have given up the first goal in 21 of their 26 starts this season.

They had one shot at even-strength in the first period.

Trap game?

Even at this early stage of the NHL season, there's a 17-point gap between your Montreal Canadiens and their Atlantic Division "rivals", the Buffalo Sabres.

The Canadiens have scored 20 more goals than Buffalo.

They've allowed 28 fewer.

The Canadiens have won three in a row. The Sabres are on a four-game losing streak.

Buffalo is 2-10-1 at home, the Canadiens 6-4-0 on the road.

Heck, why play the game at all? Just award two points to the visiting team in Buffalo and let's get on with the serious part of the schedule.

But funny things can happen in a game played on a slippery surface, with Ryan Miller standing at one end of it.

The Sabres won three of the teams' five games last season. This is the first of four ostensible mismatches in 2013-'14.

Nice job making a sleeper more fun Mr. Boone.

  2. bellcentre hotdog says:

    Price was awesome… Again.

Gallagher seems to make whatever line he’s playing on the Hab’s number one line.

And Murray … All guts. Holds his own against the league’s heavyweight champ. What a beauty.

  3. db says:

So, if we keep on winning, when will we see Parros or Bourque?

    • Storman says:

Not really supposed to change a winning line up, but i can see Parros playing against Toronto, and maybe Bourque in Washington for Briere, but probably White, but i think Briere needs a press pass on Friday to show him no free rides, compete, compete, compete

  4. db says:

Habs have scored a PP goal in every road game this season..

  5. Sal from the Hammer says:

    Price is very steady.

  6. Mavid says:

and another win yip skippidy dooooo

    Weed Wacker Grandma Smurf

  7. slapshot777 says:

I mean if that was a 2-1 game there is enough time to score. Poor judgement by the linesmen.

  8. SherbrookeW says:

    Habs Since ’68

When the Habs win, they win with speed, passing and transition. Being”tougher” and “bigger” (like Murray? Jesus.) has nothing whatever to do with their consistently winning hockey games.

  9. RAM_TOUGH says:

    Choke on that Miller!

  10. The Jackal says:

Almost a petty complaint – but we were going to win that icing call… why call it against us? NHL refs are terrible.

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  11. Strummer says:

    Look’s like Murray’s was a flesh wound

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

  12. slapshot777 says:

How you you blow down an icing when the puck hasn’t crossed the line and 2.9 seconds. in a game

    • ffenliv says:

I may be wrong, but I believe under the new system, they still blow it down at the hash marks, even if it hasn’t crossed the line, but the linsemen believe it will before players get to it.

  13. Danno says:

Not one for the All-time Classic Habs DVD box set, but we’ll take the two points…

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs

  14. SKHab says:

Weak icing call. Whistle blew before the puck crossed the red line

  15. Strummer says:

    Ole Ole Ole Ole

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

  16. icemachine says:

Hoping Markov pots an empty netter

  17. B says:

Connor Crisp scores in the 3rd to tie it 2-2 and then scores in the shoot out to win it for Sudbury.

Hudon with a pair of assists in a 5-2 win over Quebec.

Thomas with a goal and 2 assists, but Dogs lose to Rochester 6-3.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  18. VancouverHab says:

Moen just made a glorious and gloriously undramatic defensive stop stick-to-stick.

  19. RAM_TOUGH says:

Sweet Niblets I could have been at this game dang nabbit!

  20. Storman says:

Murray empty netter from Markov would be nice

  21. VancouverHab says:

    “Cammalleri Lives!”

    Haha! My thought exactly :–)

  22. slyCH says:

    Price ahoy!!!!

  23. ooder says:

is it me or the habs are just awful at scoring into empty nets

  24. monmick says:

    Cammalleri goal…

  25. db says:

Moulson looks like he can’t wait to be a UFA lol

  26. Propwash says:

    CA REY!

  27. icemachine says:

    Gally imitating Cammi!

  28. slyCH says:

Markov is so calm, he gets the pass in his skates and still creates a scoring play. He’s sooooo cool hand Luke.

  29. Mark C says:

Where’s that “stats” guy to tell us MT is a moron for playing Gally on the PP?

  30. The Jackal says:

Gallagher – good ALL the time.

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  31. AH says:

    Timex with the snipe!!!!

  32. Propwash says:

    Roof daddy from HoneyBadger!!!

  33. db says:

And that’s what happens when you pressure Markov.. he doesn’t panic and makes a great pass. Markov leads the Habs in points in November.

  34. Et le but says:

    3 point night for Markov…

  35. SKHab says:

    Sniper McSniperson

  36. Storman says:

    MARKOV is Norris worthy

  37. RAM_TOUGH says:

    Gally snaped his slump! LOL

  38. Mavid says:

    The energizer bunny blasts one!!!!!

    Weed Wacker Grandma Smurf

  39. HabinBurlington says:

    What passing!

  40. frontenac1 says:

Crankshaft back on the bench. How can you not love this guy?

  41. SKHab says:

    Sweet. He deserves it!

  42. RAM_TOUGH says:

White with the Wink! Got to love Whitey!

  43. Et le but says:

    Please end this now…enough already!

  44. Habitant in Surrey says:

…I hated watching Habs Sabres games even when Gilbert Perreault and the French Connection were flying high

…Imagine how much I’m not enjoying this …ugh

  45. ooder says:

good for DD breaking out of his slump or wtvr.. but he does not deserve to consistently start on the PP

  46. habsfor25 says:

Boone, enough with the negative energy!!!

  47. Storman says:

Tony Marinaro tweets I am a sparrow

  48. RAM_TOUGH says:

Gally & Eller in a slump!

  49. db says:

BUF annoucers saying Myers got a penalty for being too big..

  50. slapshot777 says:

Tyler thinks he is a tough guy, but he is only picking his shots against smaller players.

  51. AH says:

Timex with all his hustle draws one of course!

  52. doogie says:

What if boarding calls were automatic 3 minute penalties or full 2 minute majors?

  53. Reflektor says:

Boone works hard, understands his role.

  54. Et le but says:

    End this now please…
Great HUSTLE (again) by Gallagher draws the call

  55. SKHab says:

Gallagher keeps on getting punished, draws the call.

  56. Storman says:

Hard to watch when we get out competed, team seems so tight, dont understand the no compete level at times,, they want to win this game, by taking the least amount or giving the least amount of hits, just want to move the puck, look for a break and hope Carey makes the big save when necessary

  57. shootdapuck says:

only reason MT calls timeout on icing cause its in his engraved in stone gameplan from 2 yrs ago!

  58. duffy says:

    Is Briere dressed tonight ?

  59. D Mex says:

Just walked in after listening to the game on satellite.
WTF is Buffalo wearing on their backs ?
Those outfits are bad – the hockey jersey equivalent of suckin’ and blowin’ at the same time. Butt ugly !

    ALWAYS Habs –
    D Mex

  60. SKHab says:

Good work White. Keep talking to them.

  61. Habbu says:

The Sabres could save a few dollars by having Scott play without a stick……..cause me thinks he doesn’t know what it’s for anyway

  62. doogie says:

Dudley and Bergevin realize that this team gets knocked down a lot ? Bigger, stronger, hungry, aggressive please.

  63. Et le but says:

    4-3 Toronto

  64. RAM_TOUGH says:

Ram smells a Sabres PP soon!

  65. ooder says:

how the hell do they shutdown the caps + pens
and then get dominated by these losers

  66. db says:

Get the game in gear boys, Crankshaft did his job, score one for him!

  67. slapshot777 says:

    Bet Parros dresses Saturday night.

  68. Et le but says:

If Habs score now we’ll hear how Murray changed the game

  69. slapshot777 says:

Parros should be playing the odd game anyway to keep in game shape. Maybe MT should go out and fight Scott and then ask should I have dressed Parros. It was a no brainer.

  70. RAM_TOUGH says:

Habs facing the biggest Goon in the NHL yet MT does not dress Parros?

  71. Landof10000lakesHab says:

Luv Prust but dragging down Eller’s line. A must change before next game.
