Liveblog: Game 21 – A first since 1967 : Rangers shut out Canadiens in Montreal

RangersD

It had been a while

The last time the Rangers hung a goose egg on the Canadiens in Montreal?

Feb. 25, 1967.

Perfect goaltender that night: Ed Giacomin.

A mere 46 years and nine months later, Ryan Callahan's power-play goal – a redirection of Brad Richards' shot – was the only red light of the game.

The Rangers won most of the races and puck battles, holding the Canadiens to 22 shots.

The Canadiens looked like a team that had played on the road Friday night.

The Rangers looked rested and ready.

Cam Talbot made 22 saves to record an easy shutout.

Carey Price faced 33 shots and made many heroic saves.

Feeble

The Canadiens went almost eight minutes into the period before getting a shot on Cam Talbot.

They ended up with five.

Weak.

Price streak ends

Ryan Callahan tipped in Brad Richards' shot during a Rangers power play.

It was the first goal Carey Price gave up to the Rangers in almost 260 minutes on Bell Centre ice.

Canadiens outshot the visitors 10-9, but the Rangers are doing a good job of minimizing blue-chip chances against Cam Talbot.

Good start, then ...

The Canadiens outshot the Rangers 4-1 in the early going.

Final tally: 15-7 for the visitors, and that doesn't include Chris Kreider clanging one off the goalpost behind Carey Price.

Alexei Emelin played six shifts, 5:13.

Canadiens had the only power play.

Two questions

1.Can your Montreal Canadiens win consecutive games for the first time since Oct. 28-29, when they beat the Rangers and Dallas Stars?

2. Can David Desharnais's Shootout goal in Columbus – which sent the Canadiens' bench into paroxysms of joy for their popular teammate – signal the end to DD's long slump?

Bonus questions:

• Will Brendan Gallagher, bitten by the flu bug in Columbus, be well enough to play?

• If Gally can go, who sits?

All will be answered soon at the Bell Centre, where the Rangers have lost eight in a row – including six shutouts.

    Parros and Murray haters…..
When are you going to start calling out Max Pac, Bourque, Plekanec and Gionta, for their suckage? Funny how I never even mentioned Briere or DD. Line # 2 and line# 3 blow!

    Go Habs Go!!

    • twilighthours says:

Are you new here? All of those players receive plenty of criticism.

    • danhabsfan says:

Not true… I have been calling for max PAC to probably be our best trade bait. Bourque needs to go. Pleks we keep, can be one of the best 3rd line guys in the he league, but needs the right wingers. DD and Briere not movable. Play each on opposite games, taking turns, they are the same guy, just with different numbers

    • jrshabs1 says:

ya thats right… everybody is always all over those bums.(lol) Poor Parros and Murray, HIO scapegoats…even though 2/3 of the team suck! 20 years of medicroty and counting.

      Go Habs Go!!

  2. danhabsfan says:

    Stupid. leafs

  3. Habbu says:

With their 5 ft 8 inspirational leader still too sick to crash the net; they were doomed, as NO ONE else seemed too interested in picking up the slack.

  4. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

I wonder what is Price’s record against back-ups…bad luck. We all keep focusing on issues like size but this team just can’t score. Three scoring lines? Yeah right…

    • danhabsfan says:

I’ve been saying all summer… The other teams all seemed to improve during the summer, but the Habs did not. We did not get faster, bigger, or more scoring… The writing was on the wall

    • mushalain says:

Habs can’t score cause they are lousy at passing. The bottom line is that were just dont have many good players. Traditionally any team who typically has a dman has their top point producer is a weak one.

  5. twilighthours says:

It’s darn easy to offer advice from behind a computer screen (hello, HIO!), so here goes:

Therrien seemed to have no answer for NYR’s trap. Montreal could not advance the puck through it at all.

I remember when Pitt played us a couple years ago, I’m thinking the Martin/Cunneyworth year (possibly the Letang/Patches hit game), and we were up on them and trapping. Bylsma brought his team out of the room and had them with a forward at the far blue line on the boards. On the other side of the ice, a forward was skating hard down the wing. The defenseman ripped a hard pass at the stationary forward, he tipped it in, and on-rushing winger would go and get it. Perfect trap-crack. Genius coaching.

Then again, Therrien is no Bylsma.

  6. mushalain says:

What irks me is is Gerrard Gallant in a interview during the 2nd intermission stating he is happy with his teams effort and saying Talbot was the main reason they were down.

Is our coaching staff watching the same game? They were nothing short of lazy and should be given a bag skate tomorrow even after back to back games

    • Da Hema says:

It was exactly the same thing with Claude Julien when he was head coach here. I would go apoplectic when the Habs would get their asses given to them on a plate, and then Julien would say to the media that his boys “tried hard.” Therrien, like Julien, is a first-class liar.

  8. JM says:

didn’t come to play in the 1st period and didn’t come to play in the 3rd period to add to that 18-players who couldn’t score 1-Goal”SAD”

  9. Danno says:

    Stephen Harper on AC tonight.

    Goodnight.

So M.T puts Emelin on for the final minute when we need a goal! Plus, he has D.D, bourque, Max…idiotic.

  11. Chrisadiens says:

Carey Price is unbelievable. Even though we lost badly. I had a smile on my face watching him make amazing saves.

Emelin looked great as well. His first game in 7 months, he didn’t look out of place at all.

Maybe MB can finally address the problem that the Habs have had for 10 years. 5 on 5 scoring.

Chrisadiens and HabFan10912, one of the few father son tandems on HIO.

  12. Habbu says:

And the knowledgeable hockey fans of Montreal boo them off the ice. That won’t sit well with the organization……..

  13. Danno says:

    Drunken stupor time

  14. voicemajor2000 says:

Man, Borque and Pacioretty look lost out there. Weak on the puck, not much physicality, and no finish. Size means nothing if you don’t use it to your advantage. I lament the Borque trade every game. Cammy was small, but was had the work ethic, and good finish.

  15. Adidess says:

    Ouf!

If we have an offensive system, need to throw it to the dogs right now. It’s not just that we’re not scoring, we’re not creating chances, we’re not keeping the puck in the offensive zone long enough for something to develop.

    Pathetic!

  16. justintime says:

Fire Therrien…he clearly has no idea how to motivate his players, or put together effective lines. My patience with him has just worn out completely.

  17. Habbu says:

    Too many passengers…….

Winner on a Weak 5-3 call but that’s what you get unless your a leaf

This is like w2atching Carbo MT and JM all at once no scoring anywhere they were out matched by a Rangers team without Nash, or King Henrik. Bad game it feels like there is a lot more work for this team to do which is disappointing and to be honest I’m tired of MT and his coaching style and the fact his most useless players get to much vital time.

    • voicemajor2000 says:

At least when we were under Carbo, we finished in first and had scoring depth outside of our first line. Under JM we went to conference finals. Under MT last year we didn’t make it out of the first round. I know it has only been one year really with MT, but I think the players need a shake up. Either a trade or firing. The veteran players look lost.

  22. Da Hema says:

I’m no hockey “expert,” but it does seem to me you can’t win games if you can’t score goals.

  23. Willy the bum says:

Holy crap… my PVR’s going for another hour!

  24. Cdnman1 says:

Worst display this year. Should give out refunds. The refs are going to make me quit watching one day! It is too much.

  25. The Dude says:

Done in by another Franco Goalie…….

  26. twilighthours says:

I didn’t love the penalty call that ultimately decided this game.

But MTL definitely didn’t play well enough to get even 1 pt.

  27. jmac21 says:

Another BRUTAL SHOWING BY THE HABS AND GREAT COACHING AGAIN MT
FIRE THE BUM AND GET RID OF THE DEAD WEIGHT
PRICE NEEDS SOME SCORING HELP SOONER THEN LATER

  28. SportsFan31 says:

Other than those amazing saves by Price, that was a very painful game to watch.

    Go Pricey!

  29. duffy says:

    DOMINATION ENDS !!!!!!!!!!

  30. Mark C says:

    Nice keep in by Emelin.

  31. Strummer says:

Crap- the difference was a 5 on 3 goal.

This team other than the EGG can’t effin score

I think this season we will be able to sum up as “good goaltending, bad team”.

No eternal reward will forgive us for wasting the dawn.

  33. Stevie.Ray says:

Why isn’t Subban on the ice? Did he just have a shift?

I have to agree with Torts. Games between the Habs and Rangers are always so unexciting

  34. CHicoHab says:

Law of averages caught up. Nyr 0-8 at bell centre since February 2008

  35. Keith says:

Price deserved better than that. Wasted effort.

  36. C-Sword says:

I honestly feel bad for those who paid to watch the game at the Bell Center, Price is the only player that can hold his head up high.

  37. danhabsfan says:

MT might make some questionable moves… But he doesn’t have the right players, that is on MB

  38. Habilis says:

Prediction: Habs will have “Closed Door” meeting following the game.
Just a head’s up: Nothing will change, not with Therrien at the helm.

  39. Rob Maguire says:

May as well watched a soccer game tonight.

  40. Samovich says:

    Pathetic….just horrible effort

  41. showey47 says:

So disappointing that Price puts up these kinds of performances and can’t get an ounce of goal support.

  42. Habbu says:

Their forecheck has been non existent all night…..painful to watch

  43. CH Marshall says:

    That was a sick save

  44. turneria says:

This league wants more goals but allows players, especially Dmen to hit/mug players when they don’t have the puck!! What gives guys??

  45. db says:

Well, playing on this team Price is showing he can carry a team… imagine him with team Canada in front of him.

  46. Rob Maguire says:

Anyone need some mustard? Price had enough on that save to supply a Subway franchise.

  47. Stevie.Ray says:

Prices glove is always so weak…..

  48. NLhabsfan says:

    That would have been in

  49. Rudy says:

Price has been carrying this team

  50. danhabsfan says:

    Price , 1st star

  51. Samovich says:

    WOW PRICE!!!

  52. jmac21 says:

    Refs are worse every game
    Make stuff as the go
And icing calls ??? Wow that’s gonna cost someone the cup

  53. Cdnman1 says:

They consistently screw the team in red.

  54. Rob Maguire says:

    More Subbanator moves!

  55. Vinny25 says:

I ve lost all desire to watch this team play…

  56. JohninTruro says:

Reway finishes with a 5 point night, WOW.

  57. Habitant in Surrey says:

…the old Price, this would be 3, 4-0

…this is the Price We have been waiting for

  58. Cdnman1 says:

Why can’t Prust stay on his skates?

  59. Keith says:

Getting a little emotion finally. Play the 4th line.

  60. CHicoHab says:

That’s an exciting 11 seconds with no result

  61. DipsyDoodler says:

    This keeper is annoying.

  62. Stevie.Ray says:

Pretty invisible game for several players… Subban, Briere, Bournival, Galchenyuk…

Price, Prust and Moens names are the ones I’ve heard the most

    • Habilis says:

Rangers are forechecking the crap out of us when the top guys are on, they’ve been in our end all night. You’d think that MT would do some last change line matching, but I don’t think he knows what that is.

  63. Cdnman1 says:

    No penalty?.

  64. C-Sword says:

The last decent game they played was against the Isles, they had been sucking ever since.

  65. Propwash says:

Time to shut it down and move the team to Vegas.

  67. danhabsfan says:

Teu are one shot away from tying this game, but, they don’t have shots. Common boys, just shot now!

  68. Habs4LifeInTO says:

Nathan Beaulieu and Louis Leblanc with the goals and it’s 2-2 with Lake Erie tonight. Sorry if this has already been posted haven’t been on much.

    24 cups and counting….

  69. SportsFan31 says:

Keep it up, Carey. Don’t let ‘em score again.

  70. DipsyDoodler says:

You shouldn’t usually sit on a 1 goal league, but I get the impression the Rangers could defend this for another 3 periods.
