Liveblog: Game 20: Bite me, Mr. Mayor! Desharnais the hero as Canadiens win Shootout

DDColum

DD lives!

David Desharnais – who was in the pressbox for the Canadiens' first two Shootouts this season – beat Curtis McElhinney to secure a 3-2 win for the Canadiens in Columbus.

The home team led 2-0  on goals by Canadiens nemesis R.J. Umberger and Artem Anisimov when, with eight seconds left in the first period, Alex Galchenyuk stole the puck from Fedor Tyutin and raced in to beat McElhinney.

Lars Eller then tied the game at 2-2 on a power-play goal in the second period.

A scoreless third period and overtime set the table for heroics by Desharnais and Petr Budaj, who stopped all three Blue Jackets in the Shootout.

Scoreless OT

Columbus had the better chances, but Peter Budaj was hot.

So, another shootout

Letestu: Save

Galchenyuk: Save ... weird one

Anisimov: Glove save

Desharnais: GOAL!!!

Johansen: SAVE!!

Scoreless third

Neither team had golden chances.

The Canadiens outshot Columbus 11-5.

On the game, the Canadiens had a season-high 40 shots to 21 for the home team

Power play strikes again

Lars Eller scored his seventh of the season during a Canadiens power play.

The shots, at one point, were 12-1 and ended 15-6 in favour of the Canadiens.

Michel Therrien juggled his third and fourth lines, with David Desharnais moving up to centre Rene Bourque and Max Pacioretty while Daniel Brière dropped down to join Ryan White and Travis Moen.

Fresh off a shoulder injury that sidelined him 11 games, Brandon Prust fought Jared Boll.

Two bizarros, then a beauty

Columbus took the lead on two weird goals in less than two minutes.

A shot by R.J.F. Umberger, from a bad angle, seemed to change direction off Josh Gorges' skate before finding its way between Peter Budaj's legs.

They had barely announced that one when a sustained bout of Blue Jacket pressure led to Douglas murray sending Nikita Nikitin crashing into and upending Budaj. While this was going on, Artem Anisimov's point shot hit Daniel Brière's stick, bouned up in the air and sailed in over a prosptrate Budaj.

With the seconds of the period ticking down, Alex Galchenyuk stripped the puck from a sleepy Fyodor Tutin and skated in to beat Curtis McElhinney.

The Canadiens has a 14-10 shot advantage.

Friday Night in Columbus

Sounds like the title of a buddy movie, starring Jason Segel and Seth Rogen as two schmoes looking for a good time in Middle America.

Columbus would be jumping if Ohio State were playing a home game on Saturday, but the Buckeyes travel to the University of Illinois this week.

So the only game in town is hockey, with your Montreal Canadiens seeking their second win of what's been a tough month: 1-4-2.

Boovember?

The Canadiens have been idle since losing to Tampa Bay in a Shootout Tuesday night.

The Blue Jackets were 3-2 losers in Boston on Friday.

Peter Budaj in nets. Brendan Gallagher out with the flu. Brandon Prust is back, as is David Desharnais.

Taxi!, starring Alex Galchenyuk

Briere and DD on the same line is a disaster — they started the season together and we saw how well that went.

They asked Gallagher to sit on purpose. Give more exposure to dangle and showcase DD.

  14. Storman says:

In an interview yesterday Subban said he would play 60 minutes if the coach left him on, I am sure he can handle the 30 minutes a game Suter gets in Minnesota..

  15. Samovich says:

Diaz with another Idiotic icing pass…a specialty of his.

lol, Subban has a few shots on goal, some blocked shots, is a plus 1, and is having a bad night. DD has one shot on goal…. and not much else – and he’s having a good night. Briere must be having an Sittler-esque night.

    Budaj

  74. durocher says:

Losing DD to waivers would not be a “tragedy” — it would be disappointing that the improbable NHL’er couldn’t keep up his performance, but it would be a blessing to the Habs and its cap situation.
