Liveblog: Game 19 – Canadiens rally late but lose 2-1 in Shootout; Price makes 44 saves

Price

Heroic PK in OT

The Canadiens managed to kill a TWO-MAN disadvantage in overtime and take this crazy game to a Shootout.

Carey Price made 44 saves in regulation and OT.

Galchenyuk: Save

Filppula: Goal

Brière: Save

Purcell: Save

Gallagher: Wide

Carey Price was the game's First Star .. well deserved

At least a point salvaged

A Max Pacioretty pass bounced in off Daniel Brière to tie a game the Canadiens trailed for 55 minutes. On to OT ... with Lars Eller in the penalty box

Lucky it's a one-goal game

A point shot by Radko Gudas beat Carey Price, but the light didn't go on and play proceeded up ice.

Video review produced a ruling that Price had been the victim of "incidental contact" on the play.

The visitors outshot the home team 13-5 in the period, 23-13 on the game.

Three chances blown

The Canadiens had three power plays during the first period.

There were chances, but Tampa Bay goaltender Ben Bishop stood tall ... very tall.

Ryan Malone scored the only goal of the period, surviving a Douglas Murray crosschecks on Carey Price's doorstep and tipping home a point shot by Eric Brewer.

Shots were 10-8 for the visitors.

Star won't shine

What a bummer!

Bell Centre fans miss out on seeing one of the NHL's brightest young stars when the Tampa Bay Lightning visit the Canadiens Tuesday night.

In a goalpost collision eerily reminiscent of the one that sidelined Serge Savard early in his career, Steven Stamkos fractured his right tibia in Boston Monday afternoon.

Stamkos, who had never missed an NHL game to injury, is out indefinitely. He had been tied for the league lead in goals at 14 with Alexander Steen of St. Louis and in points at 23 with Sidney Crosby.

Tampa Bay defencemen Sami Salo and Keith Aulie also left the Monday game with injuries.

The Lightning had gone through their first 16 games without injuries – in contrast to the Canadiens, who are still missing Brandon Prust but may see the imminent return of Daniel Brière and Alexei Emelin.

The best team don’t always win. Colorado proved it tonight ….But the best team won in Montreal.

  2. Storman says:

Now that the game is over,, how in the hell did we not compete for the first 40 minutes,, no urgency, very low compete level, and no puck support,, really a piss poor effort by all accounts,, MT things are not looking so good….

    • Mattyleg says:

      It’s not just us though.
There were two teams out there, and TB were on fire early on, because they knew that they wouldn’t have gas in the tank, having played yesterday. Sure enough, they faded, and we picked it up.

      —Hope Springs Eternal—

    • Cape Breton says:

Never a sense of urgency until it’s needed, like late in the game when trailing. Good teams have that urgency mostly all the time. That’s why they are good. Canadiens not only lack urgency they also appear to be shorthanded when it comes to leadership.

      • Storman says:

So true the best teams constantly play with a sense of urgency like they are down a goal the whole game, that mostly stems from leadership, and coaching and the will to compete at all cost for your team mates..

  3. JM says:

we salvaged a point but the better team won …. Good win for Stamkos.

  4. Mattyleg says:

    Good, exciting game.

Price fantastic. This is the way he should have been playing for years. New Coach. Now can we get a new Coach for the rest. Could Bourque and Eller be any dumber? If P.K. Had done that…stapled to the bench.

  6. drail222 says:

Gallagher scores 90% of his goals crashing the crease, he’s not a prime shootout candidate. Eller, Subban, MaxPac should all shoot before him. We havent had a goal scorer since John Leclair left town. Oh and Cammalleri could finish so we traded him mid game..nobody likes goals anyway … At least Price showed Stevey Y who should be between the pipes for Canada. Cant beat TB with no Stamkos, yikes ..

  7. Bim says:

Circle this date on your calendar…Nov 27th. The only other game we’ll win this month!

  9. billylove says:

All things considered, a strong effort with Price stealing a point for the team. At least we’re not subjected to watching the Flames play on aregular basis. After 2 periods they’ve got 6 shots, 6! They’d be a mediocre AHL team.

  10. slapshot777 says:

Guys considering that we don’t have all our players back yet and we are still grabbing points, considering everyone was expecting us to fall flat on our face and straight out lose. Granted the games haven’t been pretty but grab as many points as we can, never know which one will be the point to put you in the playoffs.

  11. habsfan0 says:

Price stole a point for the Habs tonight.

However,Budaj to start against Columbus Friday.Price against Rangers Saturday.

    • gumper says:

Yup. And I just keep thinking about all those guys here last year who kept saying, “When’s the last time Price stole a game for us?” He’s stolen two or three already this year. Nice to have him back in top form. Nice to see the anti-Price contingent in decline.

The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane.

  12. Steven says:

So the Antichambre guys are bringing up the point of PK maybe not making Team Canada since he’s not being played on the PK(unintentional word play there). Basically they’re saying that Yzerman might be tempted not to add PK since his own coach doesn’t trust him in those situations, or something to that effect.

I find that perspective ridiculous. The media is making it sound like no one in the world knows what PK is about and that hockey execs are going to judge someone like him on how MT plays him.

  18. Peter Young says:

Tampa Bay is a strong team even without Stamkos–some of their forwards’ puck control on attack was just outstanding–and, although most of the credit has to go to Price, the Canadiens did well to hold them to one goal and to take it to a shootout. In the last five minutes of regulation and the overtime our team performed superbly in the face of three successive penalty calls in favor of Tampa Bay.

  19. slapshot777 says:

Forget this game it’s over move on to the next one and hope it’s a much better showing than this one.

  20. danhabsfan says:

I think we should go back to the real hockey. A tie is a tie, and no OT.

  21. Mattyleg says:

    Okay, I don’t get it.
What’s with this: “We didn’t deserve a point” garbage that people are spewing (and that I fully expect to read from Ol’ Brightskies Boone)??

    We totally deserved the point.
We held them off the scoreboard after their first goal, and we scored one ourselves.

What about that means that ‘We don’t deserve the point’?

In hockey you have 60 minutes (plus ot) to score more goals than the other team. If both teams finish with the same amount of goals, they both deserve a point.

I don’t believe that TB deserves the extra point.
They could have taken twice the number of shots on us and held onto the puck the entire game for all I care.
If they can’t get more goals, they don’t deserve the point.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

    • gumper says:

When a goalie plays as well as ours did tonight, you deserve a point. I think the despairers here really mean to say, “I’m really bummed about the fact that our teams doesn’t measure up well to the better teams in the league.” With that I empathize. It’s been a long wait for this team to regain its status as a perennial contender.

The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane.
      Mark Twain

      • Mattyleg says:

        We were contenders last season.
Just got injuries at the wrong time.
I can understand frustration that we have to play defensively against a team like that in order to get points, but I’d rather we do that than try to play run-and-gun like Ottawa does against everyone, and they get their asses handed to them.

        —Hope Springs Eternal—

  22. The three shootout shooters all went glove-side. The only one who shoots left (Galchenyuk) went to his backhand… so that it was glove-side. *sighs*

Left-shooting Eller, Pleks, Pacioretty, and Bourque all unused.

Amazing game though, third period on. Price was a monster.

  23. slapshot777 says:

I’ll take the point one is better than none.

  24. JM says:

We’re no good in the skills competition …

  25. Bim says:

All shots in shootout were to the glove side. You’d think someone would clue in and go stick…especially after the first two shooters failed. Mentally they just weren’t prepared. I peg these guys as one of the worst three in their conference. If Price ever gets hurt they might even be worse than that.

  26. durocher says:

As Boone has suggested, we are a mediocre team — were it not for Carey’s brilliant play, we would have been defeated in regulation by a team without Stamkos. Imagine if TB had Stamkos in the lineup; it would not have been close.

We were lucky to get a point tonight — I’ll take it.

  27. slapshot777 says:

The Habs overthink on the shootout and when they decide to deke they are too close to the goalie and can’t do anything with it

  28. gumper says:

Hard to deke a guy as big as Bishop. Probably would have been better to get someone like Subban or Markov to pull a “Sheldon Souray” on him.

  32. habs-fan-84 says:

Think Price had some extra motivation with Yzerman watching? Wow, what a show he put on!

  33. homerbowen says:

Poor decison to use Briere in shootout. If DD was in the line up MT would have used hinm as well.
There was a time when we would hire the”best” GM and the “best” coach and play the “best” players….we were competitors (winners) back then too!!!!!!!!! So sad the direction we have taken….

Unfortunately Habs shooters Are 0 for 6 in the gimmick. Looks like Tampa Bay are for real, they played a great game, thank God Carey played like he did. Glad to get at least a point in a game we didn’t play well in except for a few spurts tho.

  37. Cal says:

Can’t anyone on the Habs deke an effing goalie?
Lucky point. Should have been 4 or 5 goals for TBay, but Price bailed them out time after time, excepting that fall on your face deflection by Mallone and that other questionable call.
Loved how the refs didn’t call TBay for all the holding and interference, as well as that Bishop butt end in Gallagher’s face.
    *Sigh.*

  38. slapshot777 says:

The Habs are going to have to get out of this funk. Last 6 games they have only scored more than two once. Not going to win many games like this. Can’t exect to get a shutout everynight

  39. Seps says:

The game was best summed up by this tweet “Tampa Bay beat the Carey Price team wearing the red jerseys and blue helmets.” What an embarrassment to lose when your goalie plays like that.

Couldn’t win a shootout if habs had a sniper rifle and they had a broken slingshot!

  42. Storman says:

Why he never uses D men in the shootout is beyond me Markov extremely crafty, Subban moves up his ass, and even Murray from the habs web site has a hell of a move he uses in practice check it out at Habs site

  43. topher5468 says:

Just once I’d like to see Subban in the SO, I mean what do we have to lose, No one else seems to be any better

  44. doogie says:

    First star- Carey Price
    Second star- Carey Price
    Third star- Carey Price

The rest of them sucked! Notice how Habs SO’s never go more than 3 shooters? They lose them with only 3 opposition shooters having at it every time.

  45. dhenry1234 says:

Horrible shootout choices. Briere should not have shot. Gallagher spent the entire game overthinking and turning the puck over whenever he had a good chance to score. Murray impressed everyone on the team with his shootout skills in practice. Seems like a no brainer to put him in to me.
The shootout is on Therrien, but habs usually won’t win playing like they did tonight. This stolen point is all on Price’s shoulders and everyone on the team should be saying “Sorry Pricer”. Including Therrien.

Bishop is just enormous only way to beat him is if he’s way out of position. If he squares himself, there’s no net, just Bishop. And he’s mobile, too, for a big bugger. Glad the Habs got the point. Price and Bishop were both outstanding.

  48. johnnylarue says:

I hate shootouts… because the Habs never win them.

  49. Bim says:

I guess one win in 6 isn’t too bad eh? Mentally they just weren’t even in the arena. Poor preparation by the coach. Therrien’s gotta go. Back to L’antichambre Michel. Coaching is not for you.

  50. Thomas Le Fan says:

GAWD, I HATE SHOOTOUTS! If ever a game deserved to end in a tie, that was it. Most entertaining non playoff game in a long time ruined by a gimmick. How can anyone enjoy that?

There is no crying in baseball, “i” in team or “chuck” in Galchenyuk but … there is fighting in hockey.

  51. Harditya says:

Once again can’t score in shootout.. STOLE A POINT!

  52. piper says:

Great steal by Price. That was a huge 5 hole on Bishop that no one could hit.

  53. slapshot777 says:

The guys have no confidence in scoring we see it all throughout the game and in the shootout. No creativity afraid to shoot can see how undecided they are coming in to shoot they are tentative. Price can’t do it all. But he pretty much did tonight

  54. Steven says:

Not that the choice of shooters in this one was bad, but MT could have picked better, I think. I would have gone Galchenyuk, Subban, Eller, and left Briere and Gallagher as the 4th and 5th shooters if it got that far…

That being said, Price stole a point in this one. He was fun to watch. If he plays like that come playoff time, watch out, no matter how the rest of the team looks.

  55. joeybarrie says:

It took the Habs 60 minutes to figure out that shots to the net with body’s in front scores goals.

That’s poor coaching and nothing else. Not impressed with this game when their best player was missing.
