Liveblog: Game 18 – Losing streak ends as Canadiens double Islanders 4-2

CelebrateIslander

The future is bright

Third star of the game: Lars Eller, a goal and two assists

Second star: Brendan Gallagher, a goal and an assist

First star: Alex Galchenyuk, a goal and two assists ... and six shots on goal ... and two hits.

Rookie Michaël Bournival also got one.

Average age of Canadiens scorers on the night: 21 years, three months.

Sweet!

Kid puts it away

Brock Nelson brought it down to a one-goal game on an Islanders power play.

Then the kids took over.

Alex Galchenyuk completed a sweet passing play with linemates Lars Eller and Brendan Gallagher to put the game away.

PP comes to life

Brendan Gallagher got the Canadiens on the board, converting a lead pass from Alex Galchenyuk for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

But Pierre-Marc Bouchard beat Carey Price with a long knuckleball on an Islanders power play, the first goal conceded by the Canadiens' PK in 22 tries dating back to the San Jose game.

The Canadiens' power play got goals from Lars Eller, his sixth after a long drought,  on a one-timer off a lovely feed from Galchenyuk, and Michaël Bournival, whose fifth was a tip of a Raphael Diaz blueline blast.

Canadiens outshot the Islanders 9-8, 20-18 on the game.

Scoreless first

The Islanders had the first four shots of the game, but the Canadiens speed began to tell as the period progressed and they outshot the visitors 11-10.

The Canadiens killed a penalty and looked threatening on their one PP.

Sunday dinner .... minus Mom's cooking

It's weird to have hockey at 6 p.m. on a Sunday.

And the visiting Islanders played Saturday night in Columbus, where they lost 5-2.

The Blue Jackets ended a five-game losing streak, and perhaps the Canadiens can muster a win over a tired team to put the brakes on their own four-game skid.

The Islanders won two of their three games against the Canadiens last season, including a 4-3 overtime win on their only visit to the Bell Centre. Matt Moulson scored twice in that game, but he's been traded to Buffalo in the deal that made Thomas Vanek an Islander.

The Matt who bears watching is Martin, who had eight of the Islanders' 20 hits in their loss to Columbus. John Tavares, who's off to a slow start and has not meshed with Vanek, went 7-14 in the faceoff circle. Vanek played one shift before exiting with an upper-body knack.

The  Canadiens have scored two or fewer goals in six of their last seven games. They will face Montreal homeboy Kevin Poulin, who gets the goaltending start for the Islanders.

Puck drops 6:10ish. Check back later for live game blogging.

    WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF are you sh***g me!!!!!!!!

How is that not kicking the puck? They need to figure this rule out.

  3. slapshot777 says:

    But MT won’t do it

  4. Grimmly says:

LOL how was that NOT a kick, you seen him pull his foot back after the kick because he was going to fall over. Wow

  5. DipsyDoodler says:

” The puck was not kicked in the net.”

    Huh?

  6. slapshot777 says:

DD should be benched for the rest of the period

  7. Peter Young says:

DD was headed off the ice but had to make his little hook at center ice, costing a pp and one goal of his team’s lead. He is a liability at the moment and has been for quite a few moments past……

wow – now that’s some bad d right there

  16. sCOTT1243 says:

Would someone freaken move him front in front of the net. Man we are soft. Other teams take Gally’s head off, we have to do the same.

Going to TO, it will be a goal.

  17. Danno says:

It shouldn’t count. Skate was moving

    No doubt, a good goal….

Seems like we have been the tonic for an anemic Isles PP the past few seasons…

  20. NightRyder says:

I’m so glad Desharnais was able to make up for his lacklustre shift by taking a penalty and letting the Isles back into the game.

  21. Propwash says:

DD for hooking… man someone needs to help him get his poop in a group.

DD must be a mess in the head, thinking what the heck does he have to do to score.

  26. jols101 says:

Isles coming out hard in the 3rd. We need another one or two…

  28. Stevie.Ray says:

Travis Moen will not return tonight. He is sick with the flu.

  29. Reflektor says:

Ferraro has been hating the Habs since day one of the luckiest job of his life. Maybe spend more time consoling your overrated buddy Kevin Dineen.

  30. slapshot777 says:

At least Bournival and Eller both scored tonight who were in scoring slumps.

there is those lovely zoomies again..still not sure if I should spring for a pair..or 2

  32. Maritime Ronn says:

    So happy Bournival scored.
He was slowly becoming the next victim of a Habs plague known as
    H0N0 Desharnais
Bourque has symptoms and Max was smart to run away quickly. Look what it did to Briere before he was hurt.
Please make sure the 2 Gallys never get close to that plague.

    • savethepuck says:

Agreed. I was also thinking he was becoming invisible since moving to DD’s lone.

  34. NightRyder says:

Bournival is playing so well Therrien is going to have to limit his minutes to show him who’s boss.

  36. slapshot777 says:

Still love to see a full 60 minutes of hockey. The Habs played a good last half of the first period and was sluggish up until the last couple of powerplays when they scored. Let’s hope that the third they play a good hard period.

  37. Habbu says:

Ferraro pissed me off the other night……suggesting the most the Habs could expect from Eller was a spot on the third line…

  38. slyCH says:

RDS just dissected baked potato DD play. More butter.

  39. habs001 says:

It would be nice to have a fourth line that does its hitting but provides 6-8 goals per player over the season..The Habs of the last few years have a fourth line that scores 2-3 goals per player per season…

    • savethepuck says:

Moen and Prust meet your criteria, we just need a center to go with them, but I really don’t have a problem with Whitey.

Problem we have on the PP is we don’t shoot enough. Diaz and Boullion are especially guilty of this. Here I am screaming at them shoot the puck and as soon as Diaz shoots the puck bang it is in the net. Problem solved

    • JohninTruro says:

You would think since they won’t bring Beaulieu up to play the PP (which I am happy he is in the AHL developing) that they might try a forward who can slap it on the point.

  44. thehabsfan29 says:

Was just thinking about who would be a good fit for the habs and Wayne Simmonds came to mind.

Yes I know we would need to make moves to fit his salary (And I know it would never happen) but I was very curious to see if people thought he would be worth getting if we had to give up beaulieu in the deal.

  45. jols101 says:

The Dagger Boone? Still a full period to play. They need to keep pressing and not sit back…

  46. icemachine says:

Nice, started the 2nd poorly, but the second half has been so much better. If they can carry this pace through the 3rd then I’ll feel much more positive about the week to come

Its time to switch to whiskey, we’ve been drinkin’ beer all night

  47. Danno says:

Does Boone have an update on those fans who wore the blackface? I hope they were dealt with appropriately.

its about time, but I am still restating the need for a solid Center

    • Steven says:

Though I would tend to agree, Eller and Galchenyuk are both projected to be pretty good sooner rather than later. It would be unwise to trade valuable pieces for a solution right now when we have two solutions coming up.
