Liveblog: Game 17 – Losing streak hits four as Canadiens bow 4-1 to Senators

Four unanswered

Goaltender Robin Lehner made 33 saves and his Ottawa teammates made the most of their opportunities.

Andrei Markov scored the first goal of the game during a first-period play.

But Bobby Ryan tied it at 1-1 28 seconds later, and Ottawa took control with two goals in 37 second-period seconds. Defencemen Mark Methot and Mark Borowiecki took advantage of confusion in the defensive zone and screens in front of Carey Price.

Kyle Turris added an empty-netter.

robin Lehner made 33 saves, 25 over the final 40 minutes.

The Senators had 23 shots on Carey Price.

Senators hold the fort

Ottawa maintained its lead, and Kyle Turris added an empty-netter.

Robin Lehner's excellence snuffed any hope of a CH comeback.

Two quick ones

Ottawa defencemen scored twice in 37 seconds to give the Senbators the lead.

Andrei Markov cleared a rebound directly to Mark Methot, who blasted it past Carey Price.

Then Mark Borowiecki scored the first of his NHL career, and the Canadiens were shellshocked.

Robin Lehner made 14 saves in the second period.

Price was beaten twice on six shots.

Short-lived celebration

Twenty-eight seconds.

Barely enough time to crack a beer.

That's how long the Canadiens' lead lasted.

After Andrei Markov blasted one past Robin Lehner on a beautifully executed power play, Bobby Ryan used a Kyle Turris screen to fire one past Carey Price.

Canadiens outshot the Senators 9-7.

Rivalry resumes

They played back-to-back exhibition games in September, but the Thursday evening dance at Canadian Tire Place is the first REAL hockey game between the Canadiens and Senators since the Eastern Conference quarter-final series last spring.

And we all remember how that ended: the Senators celebrating a five-game series win after dealing the home team a 6-1 pasting at the Bell Centre.

There have been some changes since that bitterly-fought series, which included the Eric Gryba head shot that knocked Lars Eller out of the playoffs in Game 1 and a line brawl in Game 3.

Daniel F. Alfredsson is no longer a Senator. George Parros is a Canadien.

The rivalry is not as intense as Montreal-Boston or the Battle of Ontario. But the Canadiens and Senators could find themselves in a tight, season-long battle for an Eastern Conference playoff berth.

Michel Therrien has shuffled his forward lines again: Mac Pacioretty joins Tomas Plekanec and Brian Gionta, Lars Eller is reunited with Brendan Gallagher and Alex Galchenyuk, David Desharnais returns to the lineup between Michaëel Bournival and Rene Bourque, Travis Moen is back and will play with Ryan White and George Parros.

  1. CHicoHab says:

Question??? Have we won a game with Parros in the line up yet??

  2. crabvader says:

MT benching Subban again… What a doofus.

  3. Mondou6 says:

Price is so much better this year, it’s crazy. Too bad the rest of the team stinks now.

  4. piter says:

    is it over yet…..

  5. Dust says:

Bournival has had a poor game tonight

  6. CalgaryHab says:

We take a lot of ‘pussy’ penalties

  7. kalevine says:

looks alot like one of those 6-1 games from last year’s playoffs, Habs are Ottawa’s beeyoches

  8. Les_Habitants85 says:

    Chincy call. Refs suck lol

  9. Habbu says:

Bourque has been the picture of inconsistency his whole career…….so frustrating to watch

  10. crabvader says:

    That’s a penalty?

  11. slapshot777 says:

You can count on one hand every game how many Hab players has a good game and still have fingers left on that hand

  12. bellcentre hotdog says:

    1 goal.

  13. db says:

Meh… even if we made the playoffs. I’m ok with a tanked season where we can go with a true rebuild. Maybe we can get some picks for Moen, Gio, Murray, DD (lol)… even Diaz.

    • slapshot777 says:

F**k the tank, you don’t automatically get first anymore and your chances have even lessened. Knowing the way the league feels towards the Habs thy would have that fixed too. This French coach and players crap has to go. You get the best player available whether he is French, English, or Taliban. You still take that player.

  14. topher5468 says:

White’s not the only one in pain. We need someone to finish damn it

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  15. CHicoHab says:

    Bournnotvaluable tonite

  16. CHicoHab says:

    Prust is injury prone.

  17. RockinRey says:

    Bournival quiet tonight.

  18. EricInStL says:

some DDs behind DD on the CH bench

  19. Et le but says:

Just mailing it in…they look confused and disinterested; doesn’t reflect well on the relationship with the coach. Still lots of time for the team to come together though.

  20. Thomas Le Fan says:

Is there anyone here who will say that this team appears to be well coached? I didn’t like Therrien the first time around, decided to give him the benefit of the doubt on his return (not much choice there) but again I just don’t think he’s an NHL caliber head coach.

There is no crying in baseball, “i” in team or “chuck” in Galchenyuk but … there is fighting in hockey.

  21. SmartDog says:

Again we’re getting pushed around by a bigger team.
    Do the math.

    Desharnais: FAIL
    Briere: FAIL
    Parros: FAIL
Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!

  22. Plekasuares says:

    We need Prust..

  23. Mondou6 says:

  24. Habbu says:

Wonder how Gally really feels about some of his teammates?

  25. showey47 says:

Down by 2 on the PP and the cube is back out there. Is there another team in the league where bouillon would be on the PP? I have nothing against the guy,he is all heart but he is barely an nhl defenceman anymore nevermind someone who should be on the PP.

  26. Harditya says:

Good players. Mediocre team. Frustrating week for sure.

  27. Bim says:

A defenseman is leading this team in scoring. That’s shameful! And on top of it all Therrien benches him. What? On the subject of scoring. Habs captain GIO has a grand total of 4 goals in 15 games. Definitely not leading by example. A lot of money being paid out and not much production. Blow it up boys!

  28. NLhabsfan says:

    Stupid penalty

  29. Danno says:

    We’re dead

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs

  30. CHicoHab says:

    Bork the dork. Why that?

  31. NDO33 says:

I have to say, Patched has been awful this entire season. Gutless

  32. db says:

Y’all are on Bourque but Patches has been way worse with better linemates..

  33. SUMO says:

Keep firing away PK, your shot will hit the net or hurt someone. That’s real intimidation

  34. savethepuck says:

That was by far the best shift I saw from DD, Bournival ( 4 goals ) and Boirque ( 5 goals ). The 2 wingers were kind of invisible tonight and I was starting to blame it on their center.
“They don’t hang Conference Championship Banners from the rafters here”
    Carey Price

  35. HabinBurlington says:

CBC took almost 20 seconds into a powerplay to realize a penalty was called

  36. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

good guy methot. hope he’s okay.

  37. RockinRey says:

    Both teams were gassed.

When Briere comes back I would play him at center. I would send DD down to the farm to see if he can get a game ( not to be confused with his game, because I never thought he had one).

  38. slapshot777 says:

Clear example of how the Habs are not willing to go to the front of the net or shoot. They were content to sty on the perimeter. Ottawa was okay with that why wouldn’t they. No arm can come from that

  39. Et le but says:

    Now or never boys

  40. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

    all light and no heat

  41. Orr4 says:

I wonder what they could get for PK if they threw his name out there?

  42. Habbu says:

Yes great puck possession….but how many shots?

  43. Hobie Hansen says:

Bourque was on the ice for 2 minutes and dog tired!

  44. EricInStL says:

DD nothing more than a beer league all-star.

  45. crabvader says:

And Bourque mails it in on a good shift… Still… the lack of shots is alarming.

  46. adadi says:

    Bourque’s a turd.

  47. slapshot777 says:

Edmonton and Philly would be two teams I would target for trading Partners. They right now would be more inclined to make a trade Edmonton looking for defense and Philly for pretty much anything. MB shoud be making calls to at least see what they are willing to do

  48. SUMO says:

“DD tries but he can’t win a physical battle” That’s ok, MB signed another midget in Briere who cant either

  49. RAM_TOUGH says:

More passion on the Young & the Restless

  50. Sal from the Hammer says:

Good thing Neil is already ugly

  51. Mondou6 says:

What’s the standard refrain? “We lost to a good team tonight, nothing wrong with that.”

  52. Habilis says:

They’ve quit on Therrien, it’s obvious.
The preceding was posted in a vain attempt to reverse-jinx this team into waking up.

  53. topher5468 says:

Just a thought, I know that any shot has a chance of going in, but most of our shots are from the side of the net or the point. Do they really expect to score with that shot selection

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  54. danhabsfan says:

Is little Gally the only Hab that can drive the net? Something is very wrong here.

  55. NDO33 says:

Doesn’t seem to matter what grit we’ve added, Habs still look timid against this team.

  56. Sal from the Hammer says:

Chucky has a hard time finishing…

    • Hali_Hab says:

He’s 19.. If you want to talk about finishing ask , Plecks , Gio, borque, patch and just about everyone else other than the kid line.

      • Strummer says:

Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg weren’t in the NHL at 19 either.
        Edit: Either was Ovie
“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

  57. RockinRey says:

Nice to see! A little life going to net.

  58. Orr4 says:

how many good games has Bourque had? 2?

  59. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

what a gong show. subbie not doobie tonite.

  60. showey47 says:

This should be the last shift for the 4th line. Time to shorten the bench, but I don’t think its gonna happen.

  61. RockinRey says:

Habs having a hell of a time getting to dirty areas

  62. slapshot777 says:

    WTF was that keystone cops

  63. slapshot777 says:

I see the team didn’t do anything to rectify the shooting on net issue.

  64. slapshot777 says:

The Habs must be in a hurry to get home. They are playing out the period and there is more life in a morgue than on the team right now

  65. savethepuck says:

I think Carey took that in the pills and asked the ref to take his time dropping the puck.

“They don’t hang Conference Championship Banners from the rafters here”
    Carey Price

  66. Bim says:

Suddenly tanking doesn’t look so bad! Second last by month’s end! Also couldn’t help but notice on 24CH…Terriens berating of PK. I think PK is confused out there. He doesn’t know what the coach expects. Too bad. However look on the bright side..Terrien will be gone by Christmas if not before. Maybe American thanksgiving.

  67. RAM_TOUGH says:

Therrien had a stacked team with the Pens & could not get it done. MB is a smuck!

  68. Sal from the Hammer says:

    Galley you genius!!

  69. duffy says:

Players I hope we do not have to watch in Habs sweater next year. DD, Boullian ,Moen, Bourque,Gorges. Parros ,unless he starts doing his job?

  70. Hobie Hansen says:

    Montreal looks dead

  71. adadi says:

More action on the news Channel…

  72. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

A battle of 2 stinky teams, Ka-ka-diens vs Senatards.

  73. John Q Public says:

    I blame movember.
    Pass the torch to Gallant.

  74. Habbu says:

Another Post Game MT testimonial coming up praising the effort…….Skating miles with one hand on the stick can be deemed a great effort; but they need greater effort in the dirty areas…..the one on one battles

  75. Dust says:

Subban has played more minutes than Karlsson tonight… but i thought MT wasn’t treating Subban like a Norris trophey winner
