Liveblog: Game 16 – St. Louis wins in Shootout, Canadiens set shot-blocking record

Good effort against tough team

Too bad you can't block shots in a Shootout.

The Canadiens set a record with 38 blocks through regulation and five minutes of Overtime. But the Blues won 3-2.

Outhit and outplayed through the first period, the Canadiens fell behind 1-0 on Alexander Steen's 13th goal of the season.

Second period goals by Rene Bourque (his fifth) and rookie Michaël Bournival sent the Canadiens into an unlikely lead.

It lasted 11;31 into the third period. A long shot ticked off a few bodies before Chris Stewart tipped it past Carey Price for his second goal of the season.

The Canadiens had a chance to win late, but Tomas Plekanec missed a penalty shot awarded after David Backes knocked the St. Louis net off its moorings.

Overtime was scoreless, although the visitors had the better chances.

T.J. Oshie scored the only goal St. Louis would need in he Shootout, as Alex Galchenyuk, Brendan Gallagher and Max Pacioretty were stopped by Jaro Halak.

First Shootout of the season

Five minutes of scoreless OT, with St. Louis having most of the possession.

Galchenyuk: Save

Oshie: Shelf goal

Gallagher: Easy save

Steen: Save

Pacioretty: Wide

Blues tie it

A weird shot riccheted off several players before Chris Stewart tipped it behind Carey Price.

With less than a minute left, the Canadiens were awarded a penalty shot ... but Tomas Plekanec shot high. First OT of the season

Canadiens strike back

Outplayed badly in the first period but trailing only 1-0, the Canadiens got goals from Rene Bourque (his fifth) and rookie Michaël Bournival (fourth) to take an unlikely lead.

Shots in the period were 9-9.

The Canadiens hav blocked 24 shots and their penalty-kill is perfect on the night.

Four Blues have blocked shots, 13 Canadiens ... led by Douglas Murray with six.

The Bell Centre held its collective breath when P.K. Subban went to the Canadiens dressing room with what appeared to be a wrist injury.

But he returned shortly after.

Blues strike early

The game was less than three minutes old when St. Louis captain David Backes bodied Douglas Murray off the puck behind the Canadiens net and fed a pass to Alexander Steen, alone in front.

Steen promptly scored his 13th of the young season, and for a while it looked like St. Louis would run the Canadiens out of the Bell Centre.

The home side didn't register a shot on Jaro Halak until the game was almost nine minutes old.

But the Canadiens weathered the early storm, including three penalty kills.

Shot tally was 9-7.

Looking to bounce back

Your Montreal Canadiens ride their two-game losing streak into a tough challenge.

St. Louis has an 8-2-2 record and a plus-15 goal differential. The Blues are 6-2-2 in their last 10 games.

The Canadiens are 8-7 and have scored 10 more goals than they've allowed. They are 5-5 over a 10-game span.

Both teams have shuffled their forward lines.

St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock has broken up the high-scoring line of Alexander Steen, David Backes and T.J. Oshie. Chris Stewart will join Backes and Steen, while Oshie plays with Derek Roy and Vladimir Sobotka.

With David Desharnais a healthy scratch, Michel Therrien will use Alex Galchenyuk at centre between Max Pacioretty and Brendan Gallagher. Lars Eller – whom the Canadiens obtained in the trade that sent Jaro Halak to St. Louis – will centre Rene Bourque and Louis Leblanc. And Hamilton call-up Martin St. Pierre will play with Ryan White and George Parros. The Tomas Plekanec line, with Brian Gionta and Michaël Bournival, remains intact.

  1. adadi says:

Ref mixed up the jerseys. Thought he was calling Montreal.

  2. NDO33 says:

Let’s hope Parros doesn’t erase another goal sending a message again

  3. CHicoHab says:

54:00 minutes without a power play. Unheard of. Wow

  4. Et le but says:

Looks like we’re playing for the point.

  5. NDO33 says:

Ok your right Jackal good one champ

  6. RAM_TOUGH says:

Markov could not clear snow from the crease with a shovel!

  7. CHicoHab says:

All lines were horrible last 5-6 minutes

  8. slapshot777 says:

PK should be giving it to MT to night in his interviews.

  9. johnnylarue says:

    Johnny’s Revelation of the Night:

Parros should fight MORE OFTEN to ensure that he is never available to be called upon to actually play hockey. Because he can’t.

  10. Lil Snapper says:

Wow the Flyers scored!! Took em long enough!

  11. db says:

We still got a shot at winning this guys! It wasn’t the fourth line.. ok, their shift was brutal and gave away momentum but they didn’t the minus on that…

  12. slapshot777 says:

Therrien should be getting the goat horns tonight for that bonehead play. The fourth line have been in trouble all night and with 10 minutes to go what does he do, put out the fourth line and what happens we are looking at a tie game.

  13. Lil Snapper says:

    Lets go Boys remain focused!!!

  14. Ozmodiar says:

    4th line.

They should have been glued to the bench.

  15. NDO33 says:

We play on our heels the entire game, eventually those goals go in

  16. hockeyscout101 says:

For all you naysayers…that was not the 4th lines fault. Parros and White were both doing their job.

  17. The Jackal says:

Refs really screwing the Habs over.
Ignoring Blues’ BS and then having weak calls like on that icing, weak offside, weak penalties.
    They really are a mess.

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  18. NDO33 says:

Our entire 4th line needs to go. Absolutely terrible hockey

  19. adadi says:

Refs going to call a penalty on Montreal to ice the game for the Blues.

  20. danhabsfan says:

    That sucks

  21. parkex says:

Yes! Ex-Bruins Seguin & Peverley score in shootout in Boston for Dallas victory!

  22. adadi says:

Yeah, Bernier for team Canada over Carey…sounds like everyone in TO has been smoking crack.

  23. Bill says:

We didn’t need TSN talking heads to tell us there’s no market for Desharnais after the start he’s had.

We are stuck with him and have to hope he can turn it around. Or that there’s a surprise lockout and some more compliance buy-outs.

    Full Breezer 4 Life

  24. MattZ says:

    A PP would be nice…

  25. Rudy says:

Ok this is getting scary. Where’s the D?

  26. Propwash says:

  27. Et le but says:

Close call…we need a third soon

  28. piter says:

Therrien and the ref were having quite the conversation before the period started. Therrien was just giving it to him…

  29. Habbu says:

Maybe there’s s market for DD in the ECHL……?

  30. Rudy says:

Even the St. Louis commentators are saying how all the calls are going against Montreal. Daren Panger and someone else.

  31. chemic says:

    well done DIANA

  32. Sportfan says:

DD for Backes! One can dream 🙁

Sports and Entertainment in the link click and enjoy, clicking is fun!

  33. Rudy says:

    Why was that icing?

  34. habsfaninboston says:

    How is that icing?

  35. ffenliv says:

At first glance, that icing call looked pretty poor. Thought Gio had him beat to the hash marks.

  36. db says:

Premature dropulation. New word from Panger… and of course only Pleks gets booted out.

  37. Habbu says:

    Ferraro……shut up

  38. Grimmly says:

Gotta love Karolson, all alone upfront for an empty net. Thats normal for a defenceman isnt it?

    • ffenliv says:

I couldn’t tell from the text, were you making fun of Karlsson there?

If so, that’s pretty weak. Subban engenders a lot of hate around the league, and no fair part of it is because he’s very, very talented. It’s a bit unseemly to do that to another team’s best player.

  39. Bill says:

Yeah, because Murray and Parros add a lot to this team.

  40. adadi says:

I hope Murray and Partos are dressed for Ottawa.

    • hockeyscout101 says:

Don’t worry, they will be dressed for matter what the outcome is here tonight. I know that irked Therrien last year what McLean did by starting that brawl. Therrien wants revenge of sorts.

  41. adadi says:

    Bournivale’s looking good.

  42. CH Marshall says:

well put it this way, if DD was playing tonight he’d be knocked all over the place, more than usual

  43. Fransaskois says:

Ferraro saying Eller is only a #3C 😀

    Good one.

  44. db says:

    Positive vibrations y’all!

  45. chemic says:

wrong question boone, should be will refs allow a st louis penalty tonight?

  46. piter says:

St. Louis has taken a few penalties…..just haven’t been called yet….

  47. Danno says:

20 minutes of JM hockey and this one’s in the bag…

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs

  48. Samovich says:

There is very little time from retirement and going to the broadcast booth, Biron is commenting on plays he was actually in a few weeks ago!

  49. Lil Snapper says:

Maybe I am not up with things as well as I should be….Who is this Ford guy?

  50. PrimeTime says:

Morons back in their holes…..for now.

  51. Mondou6 says:

Rob Ford must have played goaltender before, because they said he’s good between the pipes.

  52. Bill says:

Chemic: Biron has freaky eyes. Can’t stand looking at him.

  53. Lil Snapper says:

    Dallas and Bruins tied

  54. Bill says:

Can’t believe the Habs are leading this game. Opportunistic scoring to say the least. Been a tough game for the forwards: Galchenyuk has been underwhelming at centre eh?

  55. chemic says:

    Biron is a good guy

  56. Luke says:

Loving how good Pk is and how good pietrangelo is tonight. Pair if great defensemen. Treat.

Love to see them play together on the Olympic team.

  57. RAM_TOUGH says:

The Dude will return if or when …

    • obrien says:

      Therrien said:

      “This is f* bullshit”

      Then “You are a f* a*hole”

      I red the lips.

      • slapshot777 says:

He can say what he like. They don’t even skate over to even give an explanation of why it was called. Was CH24 the other night when they showed the goal that Eller scored on Nashville, When MT called over the referee, he told MT that he couldn’t see the puck but the linesmen told hi the puck didn’t go in. MT looked at the linesman and said you made that call you must be a good decision maker.

  58. John Q Public says:

In keeping with today’s theme, I hope Parros smokes Cracknell.

  59. Sportfan says:

    What’s going on in Calgary?

Sports and Entertainment in the link click and enjoy, clicking is fun!

  60. Bill says:

Absolutely need Q guys like Bournival for the Habs to be successful.

  61. Steven says:

As if this team gets better without DD…

  62. Lil Snapper says:

Damn Bruins just scored to lead 2-1 with 8min left

  63. Plekasuares says:

Funny how NFL fans were bitching about the replacement refs..we have had crappy refs for quite awhile.

  64. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Make room on the bandwagon. I want back on!

  65. Sportfan says:

  66. topher5468 says:

Loved Bournivals’ goal celebration, It was like, yea, we’re getting punched, but we’re gonna punch back.

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  67. PrimeTime says:

Will the crow population decrease tonight? We’ll see…..

  68. Lil Snapper says:

Whats up with the Refs this season, they are much worse towards us so far.

  69. topher5468 says:

That was interference on Pacioretty, we caught a break there. Sounds weird just saying that.

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  70. jols101 says:

The PK has been great tonight.

  71. Et le but says:

Not suffering the 2nd period Blues tonight

  72. The Jackal says:

Come on boys let’s kill this and keep up the intensity.

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  73. Mattyleg says:

Very, very weak call by the ref.

And we’re getting nothing in return.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  74. Et le but says:

    Another BIG kill here…
