Liveblog: Game 15: Canadiens limp home after lost weekend

Landeskog

Canadiens lose 4-1 to Avalanche

Colorado has lost one game to one team this season: the Detroit Red Wings.

It's November, and maybe Patrick Roy's 12-win team is for real.

Your Montreal Canadiens lost weekend games in Minnesota and Denver.

Their record dropped to 8-7 ... with the mighty St. Louis Blues visiting the Bell Centre Tuesday night.

Gabriel Landeskog – at 20,  the youngest captain in the league – had a goal and an assist for Colorado. The Avalanche also got goals from rookie Nathan MacKinnon, Ryan O'Reilly and P-A Parenteau, an empty netter.

Colorado outshot the Canadiens 31-30.

Two errors turn game

A power-play goal by Brendan Gallagher, his seventh of the season, made it 1-1 early in the third period.

Then the roof fell in.

A huge rebound off Peter Budaj became a pass to rookie Nathan MacKinnon, who scored easily from the slot.

Then P.K. Subban turned the puck over behind his own net and Ryan O'Reilly tucked it in the open side.

P-A Parenteau's empty netter made it 4-1.

Young C scores

At 20, Gabriel Landeskog is the youngest captain in the NHL.

He scored the only goal of a tight game a bit over halfway through the middle period, roaring in from the left point to beat Peter Budaj with a laser.

Budaj has made 20 stops, to 16 for J.S. Giguere.

In an effort to generate offence, Michel Therrien juggled his forward lines, moving Max Pacioretty to Michaël Bournival's spot on the Tomas Plekanec line.

Toward the end of the period, Therrien broke up his Kid line, trying Max-Pac with Lars Eller and Brendan Gallagher.

The Avalanche are 9-0 when scoring first and leading after two.

A bit of everything

Two fights within the first five minutes ... this between teams that NEVER play each other.

Once that nonsense was out of the way, the Canadiens and Avs focused on hockey, with the home team winning puck battles and getting better chances.

The Canadiens went six minutes without a shot at the end of the period, as the Avs had an 11-8 edge.

Canadiens will begin the second period on a power play.

St. Patrick's night

Is there anything Patrick Roy isn't good at?

He was arguably the greatest goaltender in the storied history of the Montreal Canadiens and indisputably the greatest in the short history of the Colorado Avalanche.

He ran a successful major junior franchise in Quebec City.

And now Patrick Roy is back in Denver, where he has coached a team that was the NHL's second-worst last season to first place in the Western Conference.

The Avalanche are 11-1 and have won five in a row, most recently a 3-2 overtime win in Dallas Friday night.

Your Montreal Canadiens are coming off a tough 4-3 loss in Minnesota. They have not played in Colorado since Dec. 19, 2010, when a T.J. Gagliardi goal secured a 3-2 win for the Avalanche.

Peter Budaj watched that game from the Colorado bench. He'll be in nets for the Canadiens Saturday night.

• Speaking of great goaltenders, read Ken Dryden on why the NHL should get rid of fighting. And he wrote the Globe & Mail piece BEFORE last night's idiocy in Philadelphia.

…AND …a Holland or anyOne else, much more sense than Parros

  2. Trisomy 21 says:

I have a feeling Subban has an uphill battle to make the Olympic roster as it is, but tonight is an example of why he could get left out. He flashes some offensive talent and makes a couple of careless plays that lead to 2 goals against. I’m surprised he didn’t take any weak penalties too. He’s got to be better than that.

  3. NightRyder says:

Guy Carbonneau once said that Patrick Roy had the best hockey mind he’s ever seen.

I don’t think anyone has ever said that about Michel Therrien.

  4. Mattyleg says:

    Landeskog is a chippy effer.

For you haters again…Bouillon is on the ice…

  6. Habitant in Surrey says:

…this is the type of game a Beaulieu or Tinordi makes much more sense than a Murray or Boullion

    …size + mobility

  7. ABHabsfan says:

Patches has gotten better as the game moves on. Like this line

  8. Habbu says:

MaxPax appears to have found his legs this period

  9. Les_Habitants85 says:

Habs have played hard tonite and have stayed with the Avs all night, the only difference is the Avs have capitalized on mistakes while the Habs have not.. Still a good effort tonite, nothing to be ashamed of the Avs are dam good this year

  10. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

    That PGG line is amazing.

    I remember Dec. 31, 1975

  15. slapshot777 says:

    No penalty there on Patches

  16. Mattyleg says:

We’ve played the better hockey for 2/3 of this game.
Avs have capitalised on the turnovers, that’s all.
Twice against the run of play.
    They’re good.
    So are we, though.

  17. slapshot777 says:

Gorges couldn’t make a pass to save his life. If all we are going to do is play 500 put he rookies in on defense. Give MT something really to bitch about

  18. Rob Maguire says:

Idiots in Denver don’t know the rulebook.

  19. frontenac1 says:

Ladeskog just smoked Diaz. Hello Crankshaft, knock that pri#k in to next week!

DD looses it in his feet with no pressure

  22. CHicoHab says:

Nothing wrong with Pk. So he gaffed. Big deal. Can’t be brilliant all the time. It happens

  23. AH says:

Habs getting knocked all over by Colorado!!! Wait till we meet the B’s and the Leafs yikes!

  24. hockeyscout101 says:

Look for Parros to be out on the ice at least 1 more time before the game is over. Maybe 2 more if they score.

  25. slapshot777 says:

Other than PK or Markov they have no one on defense who can make a break out pass

  26. kirbhabs says:

Yep, PGG line is good… I like BEL line too, no DD!

  27. Sal from the Hammer says:

    No quit in the Habs

  28. kirbhabs says:

Colorado hanging on for their lives!!

  31. hockeyscout101 says:

Gotta give it to Colorado they have a good team of skill, youth, toughness and fighters! Roy seems to be pushing all the right buttons as well.

  32. Habitant in Surrey says:

…PK is not playing as confident or focused as He is capable

  33. danhabsfan says:

I can’t understand why people here always like to bust on guys like PK and Price. If they played on another team, you would love them and want to know why we passed them in hit he draft. This is hockey, no one is ever perfect, not even, the Rocket, the Flower, or Dryden or Roy. So support your team. Honest views are always welcome, a nd you can wear your heart on your sleeve, but realize what really is.

  34. ABHabsfan says:

I have an idea for the next Summit (for which I intend to attend): a game of shinny so all the experts on here can show us how great they really are. Call the scouts

  35. Stevie.Ray says:

I liked the way that PAC, Gally, Gally line looked. Silver lining.

  36. slapshot777 says:

What kind of shot is that, your giving Gugiere a chance to stop play and get a faceoff which we are barely over 50% tonight

  37. Timo says:

In the end Therrien didn’t have balls to keep DD on the bench the entire period.

  38. DadidolizedDougHarvey says:

I can just hear Therrien on 24CH: “blub-blub-blub-blub-PK-blub-blub” (translation: blub-blub-blub-blub-PK-blub-blub)

  39. Stevie.Ray says:

PK has had a rough night tonight. Bound to happen from time to time. Dd was on the ice for that last goal too but he was taking away the passing lane. People will undoubtedly pile on him too.

  40. hockeyscout101 says:

Parros on for all your haters now. They need an energy boost.

  41. PrimeTime says:

    PK is a fkn loser!!!

  42. Timo says:

Parros and White. Therrien know game is over. Loser.

    • hockeyscout101 says:

At least he ain’t going down without a fight. Roy has a history putting his tough guys out at the end, so Therrien is just beating him to the punch. Remember Roy gets last change. Have to send a message for February when we play them in Montreal.

    • Mattyleg says:

Did you see who was on the ice?
You want Chucky et al against Borderline, or whatever his name is?

God Timo, I know you grasp for every single straw to beat Therrien with, but… c’mon man.

      —Hope Springs Eternal—

  43. PrimeTime says:

Me Norris will not be going to Russia

  44. Samovich says:

if MT benches P.K….that is not good for the team

  45. slapshot777 says:

That’s the difference the Avalanche capitalized on their chances the Habs whiff or miss completely on theirs

  46. duffy says:

Two assists in a row for PK

  47. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

PK hasn’t been the same since the Nashville game. No idea why.

    I remember Dec. 31, 1975

  48. Mattyleg says:

    Man, we’re playing hard!!
    We want this game!

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  49. DadidolizedDougHarvey says:

There’s a time to be cute, and a time to be ferocious. P.K. doesn’t seem to know which is which.

  50. PrimeTime says:

    Thanks Mr Norris

  51. Old Bald Bird says:

Take it easy. PK just kind of whiffed on the puck.

  52. ffenliv says:

The Subban giveth, and the Subban taketh away.

  53. AH says:

Every Hab mistake possible ends up in their net!!! Subban!, MT is going to have a hey day with that one.

  54. CHicoHab says:

Apple makes a good product. Can’t believe my phone didn’t crack when I threw it at the wall in that goal

  55. slapshot777 says:

They f**king play with the puck in their end way too much and make bad passes and then give it away

  56. Timo says:

Man, it makes me laugh thinking about what Therrien is feeling right now. How much he wants to unleash on Subban but has to hold it together until the game is over.

Eh, we all new Habs had no chance tonight.

  57. danhabsfan says:

That was PKs fault… Too bad… mT will crucify him now for sure. That’s the game. This Habs team is not good, and the Leafs are, and that is the real shame.

  58. smiler2729 says:

lol Habs fans “trade him”, “fire him”, “bench him”, “blame him”… it’s hockey, people, the game changes every second, sheesh…
