Liveblog: Game 14: Road weekend starts with 4-3 loss in Minnesota

Rough night for fourth line

Ryan White, Michael Blunden and George Parros were on the ice for Minnesota's first three goals – by Justin Fontaine, Jason Pominville and Nino Niederreiter.

The Canadiens battled back in the third period, erasing the Wild lead on goals by P.K. Subban and Brian Gionta.

But Pominville's second of the game and ninth of the season won it late for the home team.

The Canadiens outshot Minnesota 31-25.

Pominville seals the deal

After the Canadiens fought back from a 3-2 deficit to tie the game on goals by P.K. Subban and Brian Gionta, Jason Pominville's second goal of the game gave Minnesota a hard-fought win.

Wild take lead

Jason Pominville's eighth was the only goal of the middle period.

A superb pass by Mikael Granlund sent Pominville past Andrei Markov and in alone on Carey Price.

The Canadiens had five shots on goal during a late-period power play and outshot the Wild 13-6 in the period.

25 seconds of scoring

At 5:45, Justin Fontaine got the home team on the board, tipping Keith Ballard's point shot past Carey Price.

At 6:10, Brendan Gallagher completed a lovely play by Alex Galchenyuk, who beat highly-regarded Wild Dman Jonas Brodin before feathering a saucer pass across the crease for his linemate's sixth.

Wild had the shot edge, 7-6 ... the last one being a good chance from close in by Charlie Coyle with seconds on the clock.

Measuring-stick games

As we begin the second month of what Red Fisher used to call the "infernally long" NHL season, your Montreal Canadiens face three challenges that will give general manager Marc Bergevin a pretty good idea of where his team is at.

The run begins Friday night in Minnesota, where the Wild are 4-1-2 on home ice. Wild fans have not seen the Canadiens since March 20, 2011, when P.K. Subban scored the only hat trick of his career and added an assist in an 8-1 romp.

The Wild have not beaten the Canadiens in Minnesota since Dec. 17, 2005.

The Canadiens leave immediately after the game and fly to Denver for a Saturday night date with Patrick Roy's red-hot Avalanche.

Then it's back to Montreal for a Tuesday night Bell Centre game against Jaro Halak and the mighty St. Louis Blues.

Not a weak sister on the short-term schedule.

The Canadiens will have reinforcements: George Parros returns to the lineup against the Wild; Max Pacioretty may be available for the game against Avalanche.

And why did 55 just give the puck away in the O-zone to set up a 3 on 2 against?

  2. VancouverHab says:

I don’t want to be unreasonably negative, but why was 55 cheek-by-jowl with his partner in front of Price intead of, you know, MARKING HIS MAN, WHO SCORED?

  3. Habbu says:

DD has to go…..where?….not sure……..but somewhere other than here…

  4. CHicoHab says:

For the record. Lose has one o

  5. Samovich says:

DD wiffs again by the boards!!

  6. danhabsfan says:

What sucks is that the Leafs are a team that is outplayed, but they win. Habs outplay teams, and they loose.

  7. Odie24 says:

I logged on just to say how f’n useless DD is. Million dollar second line center, 0 f’n goals this season, 0 SOG tonight, 0 hits tonight, what’s the point???? How long can this go on?

  8. RAM_TOUGH says:

WTF? All alone behind two Montreal D! PATHETIC!

  9. The Jackal says:

These BS lucky goals are what suck the most.
You dominate a team then they score a bunch of goals because of lucky bounces.

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  10. slapshot777 says:

Minnesota doesn’t even deserve to be in this game They have got three fluky goals on lucky bounces and tipsey

  11. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

    Off nite for whatshisface.

  12. Mark C says:

    Crap luck again.

  13. danhabsfan says:

Frankie, stay with your man, that was horrible

  14. CHicoHab says:

Last 3 Minny goals scored all in Carey’s face.

  15. RH says:

Twice 55 out of position and two goals

Time to play for the point.

  27. habsguru says:

hey DD, I hear Rob Ford needs an intern… you available?

  28. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

DD = oleg petrov minus the hands.

  29. The Jackal says:

Man, DD is a GOOD player, he has talent, but the confidence is gone.
I see the rationale behind playing him, it’s like the work experience paradox. So in the same vein, play DD more, he has more chances to get going and build his confidence. He has come close tonight, I really hope he scores.

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  30. Plekasuares says:

DD sucks. Incase you did not know…

  31. PrimeTime says:

Trolls – back to your holes!!

  32. danhabsfan says:

I assume we’ve sen the last of the 4th line

  33. Samovich says:

DD is costing the team now that was a pathetic shift

  34. Harditya says:

DD is not helpful. Bourque and LL deserve a better linemate.

  35. RAM_TOUGH says:

FFS’s bench DD or sent it to Hamilton!

  36. thehabs2002 says:

  51. CHicoHab says:

When’s the last time Gionta scored from outside the blue line?? My guess is…………….never

  52. goalie29 says:

games over…they suck…all you do is piss and moan and call the team out…go cheer for someone else if thats the best you can do

you dont need to be rah rah like the idiot laff fans…but you also dont have to be so negative all the time. they battled back. its a game. because whether you want to admit it or not…theyre a good team!!!

    Weed Wacker Grandma Smurf

  55. Et le but says:

Last game in Minnesota, March 2011, PK had a hat trick and an assist…looks like he’s comfortable playing in the twin cities

  56. Mattyleg says:

Why is everyone freaking out about PK?
    That was Markov’s shot.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  57. jols101 says:

Great fight-back tonight. When Paches is healthy, it shouldn’t be LL that is sent down to Hamilton.

  58. slapshot777 says:

I know the Habs have made bad moves over the years and the teams have sucked but the media in Montreal has to take some of the blame as well. They are much to do about nothing and creating crap when there is none.

  59. Plekasuares says:

Subban should not go to Sochi…Hahahahahahhahah lol

  60. thehabs2002 says:

Let’s bring out the 4th line again

  61. frontenac1 says:

    PK is back!

  62. Mondou6 says:

Those two plays by PK were a little too “flamboyant” for me.

  63. B says:

Markov and Gionta are too old 🙂

    –Go Habs Go!–

  64. frontenac1 says:

Pucks get thrown out from the wall all the time. Having a man alone uncovered in the slot? Killer.

  65. adadi says:

Yeah StevieY. You should leave PK at home. Great move.

  66. slapshot777 says:

Mt should be kissing PK a$$ and be glad he has a defenseman of this calibre

  67. Harditya says:

    Markov, Soobie,!!

  68. punkster says:

    Ha…suck on that Minny

  69. Samovich says:

    PK, Markov, Gionta !!!

Take that Grand Wizards of the NHL!

  72. durocher says:

Gio stepped up — mea culpa

  73. Tis Himself says:
