Liveblog: Game 14: Road weekend starts with 4-3 loss in Minnesota

Rough night for fourth line

Ryan White, Michael Blunden and George Parros were on the ice for Minnesota's first three goals – by Justin Fontaine, Jason Pominville and Nino Niederreiter.

The Canadiens battled back in the third period, erasing the Wild lead on goals by P.K. Subban and Brian Gionta.

But Pominville's second of the game and ninth of the season won it late for the home team.

The Canadiens outshot Minnesota 31-25.

Pominville seals the deal

After the Canadiens fought back from a 3-2 deficit to tie the game on goals by P.K. Subban and Brian Gionta, Jason Pominville's second goal of the game gave Minnesota a hard-fought win.

Wild take lead

Jason Pominville's eighth was the only goal of the middle period.

A superb pass by Mikael Granlund sent Pominville past Andrei Markov and in alone on Carey Price.

The Canadiens had five shots on goal during a late-period power play and outshot the Wild 13-6 in the period.

25 seconds of scoring

At 5:45, Justin Fontaine got the home team on the board, tipping Keith Ballard's point shot past Carey Price.

At 6:10, Brendan Gallagher completed a lovely play by Alex Galchenyuk, who beat highly-regarded Wild Dman Jonas Brodin before feathering a saucer pass across the crease for his linemate's sixth.

Wild had the shot edge, 7-6 ... the last one being a good chance from close in by Charlie Coyle with seconds on the clock.

Measuring-stick games

As we begin the second month of what Red Fisher used to call the "infernally long" NHL season, your Montreal Canadiens face three challenges that will give general manager Marc Bergevin a pretty good idea of where his team is at.

The run begins Friday night in Minnesota, where the Wild are 4-1-2 on home ice. Wild fans have not seen the Canadiens since March 20, 2011, when P.K. Subban scored the only hat trick of his career and added an assist in an 8-1 romp.

The Wild have not beaten the Canadiens in Minnesota since Dec. 17, 2005.

The Canadiens leave immediately after the game and fly to Denver for a Saturday night date with Patrick Roy's red-hot Avalanche.

Then it's back to Montreal for a Tuesday night Bell Centre game against Jaro Halak and the mighty St. Louis Blues.

Not a weak sister on the short-term schedule.

The Canadiens will have reinforcements: George Parros returns to the lineup against the Wild; Max Pacioretty may be available for the game against Avalanche.

  8. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

White’s line nailed to the bench to the end on of this one — at least they better be.

  9. The Jackal says:

How smart is MT for playing PK on the PP? Eh? Eh?!

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  10. CHicoHab says:

    A Norris goal

  11. L Elle says:

Chucky’s father needs to come to every game.

  12. PrimeTime says:

If Therrien wasn’t such a racist PK would play 60 minutes just like Price!! We would NEVER lose!!

  13. Samovich says:

    My god Diaz!!

  14. punkster says:

    PK is clearly unhappy.

  15. NLhabsfan says:

The announcer in Phily saying it’s all good for the goons for the next game..what an idiot.

  16. The Jackal says:

Back on the bandwagon, let’s win this!

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  17. Harditya says:

  18. Mondou6 says:

Diaz could have done that too.

    Still alive baby

  23. WhatUp says:

Blunden and Parros each -3 in less than 5 mins ice time…how the heck to you get there and wtf is Blunden still doing with the Habs..can’t skate for his life

  24. B says:

St.Pierre scores his 2nd of the game to win it 2-1 in OT. Nygren and Beaulieu with assists on both goals.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  25. frontenac1 says:

Not so much Murrays fault. His man was down low on the wall. Parros blew it in front. That was his man.

  26. durocher says:

Gio had some jump last game, and is invisible tonight. A Captain cannot be this inconsistent.

  27. Plekasuares says:

Desharnais needs to go. Like now

  28. The Jackal says:

    Therrien shortens the bench
DD on, Blunden on, Moen on, White on, Parros on…

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  29. Adidess says:

Now I’m sure we’ll find a way to play the hell out of Subban and Markov, expect them to play 28 mns by end of game

  30. Tis Himself says:

God, why do we pot points to piss’all squads?

  31. shakey says:

Why do we need parros again?

  32. VancouverHab says:

Looked bad on Parros–but he’s been out for a long time.

So the coach’s deployment….he didn’t shorten the bench in the 3rd short enough!

  33. The Jackal says:

Timo…. I’m sorry, but MT is still the coach.

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  34. Samovich says:

Keep playing the 4th line MT…

  35. Plekasuares says:

    4th line…

  36. thehabs2002 says:

I think George is still dizzy

Half breezer for one quarter of a life

  37. habsfaninboston says:

    4th line getting burned again.

  38. Mondou6 says:

    Ok, this game is over.

  39. Mark C says:

I’ll be nice, Parros was not good on that one.

  40. jols101 says:

Ya Therrien keep playing the 4th line. They are doing a bang up job.

  41. habsguru says:

and Parros is on there why

  42. punkster says:

Possibly the worst 4th line in the history of the habs…with the worst D pairing we’ve had in years.

  43. RAM_TOUGH says:

  44. calvee123 says:

there should have been a penalty at the start of the 3rd. Where the Minnesota player interfered with PK Subban. But of course this won’t be called because the referees are Homer’s for the US team. The NHL has a terrible refereeing system.

  45. durocher says:

    MT, shorten the bench

  46. LeGrosBill says:

    Great defensive coverage there Murray!

  47. CHicoHab says:

  48. Mattyleg says:

There’s that 4th line for you, Ozy.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  49. habsguru says:

Emery should have done that in PHI GM’s office

  50. Samovich says:

  51. Ozmodiar says:

Over/under for the number of shifts for our 4th line* in the 3rd period: 1

    * apologies for gratuitous line numbering

  52. BCG says:

Why is Emery nuts Boone? Just statements and no analysis. I have season tickets now and your view of the game is ….. well, it’s self-serving.

    • moser17 says:

Boone provides analysis after each game, for free for all of us. His live blog consists of descriptive statements because that’s usually what a live blog would consist of. Emery is nuts because he has at various times shown blatant and dangerous disregard for the intentions of other human beings, and that puts him on a page or three of the DSM-V.

  53. B says:

2 pump fakes by the official on the opening faceoff of the 3rd. Just drop the damn puck!

    –Go Habs Go!–

  54. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Chucky’s our best player 2nite, right? So why is his TOI only 9:11?

  55. slapshot777 says:

Habs keep skating they will be alright

  56. Rudy says:

What a shit show in Philly

  57. Old Bald Bird says:

Just watched that brawl. Emery. OMG.

  58. slapshot777 says:

There will be many changes in Philly before this season is over.

  59. slapshot777 says:

Pacs will be back tomorrow and he and DD has some chemistry. Maybe with Bourque on that line DD might get going. DD in the corners fighting for a puck is just a waste of time. He doesn’t have the muscle or size to win the puck battles.

  60. B says:

St.Pierre scores in the third to tie up a close 1-1 game vs the Marlies. Dogs are out shooting them 32-23.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  61. Mattyleg says:

    Philadelphia got beat 7-0.
But they beat up the other team, so they won.
    Isn’t that how that works?

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  62. jols101 says:

What is wrong with Therrien ? Galchenyuk is creating magic every shift and he has 9 minutes of ice time. DD is useless with 1 point in 14 games and has 12 minutes of ice time.

Is Therrien that bad a coach? Does he watch the games with his eyes closed? Please someone make sense of this.

  63. habsguru says:

habs will be okay, down one in the second, always their worst period, but looked pretty good. at risk of a HIO public stoning… LL either looks tired, lazy or like he doesn’t care. many posters here are very high on him, I just don’t see it.

  64. B says:

Fucale pulled after the 1st in a 4-4 tie, Halifax goes on to score 8 unanswered and now leads 12-4 in the 3rd.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  65. habsfan0 says:

I wonder if the Habs might be looking past tonight’s game to tomorrow’s meeting with Patrick Roy’s Avalanche?

  66. munch17 says:

It’s hard to believe that DD has more ice time than forward other than Bourque.
    That’s rewarding his incredible production.
    Chucky has so much talent.
Put him at center already and let DD be Budaj’s backup.

  67. slapshot777 says:

Harding has been lucky tonight. Has have had several chances where the puck hit the post or just rolled off the stick.

  68. CHicoHab says:

Need a Bournivaliant effort in the third

  69. Ozmodiar says:

    Andrei Kostitsyn

  70. slapshot777 says:

Habs are playing a good game and have good speed. The Habs will pull this out in the third. Love the EGG line they are really playing well

  71. frontenac1 says:

Wild are putting the Habs to sleep. Time to get Nasty in 3rd.
